Have to balance out the self-righteous rage of the previous reviewer complaining about Shawsheen's seating policy. The policy of not seating one tops at tables meant for four is because this place is tiny, not because of sexism. I've sat in most of the seats at this place at one time or another - sometimes alone and sometimes with company - at widely varying times of day. I've seen them wave off plenty of men and women taking a four top for one person, particularly during busier hours. Yes, you can get a whole table to yourself if you're there, say, early in the morning. But with maybe 10 booths in the whole place, plus the bar and a large table, not seating one person at tables meant for four is about having enough seating to go around. Ps. And yes, the food is excellent. Corned Beef hash and various assortments of pancakes are some of my favorites. Coffee is some of the best I've had in a diner. Whatever is served here, however good the food might be has been completely eclipsed by a 'policy'. This place does not allow a single female to sit at a booth by herself. They will only let her sit at the counter on a stool. What year is this? I happen to know a local who has gone into this establishment alone when it wasn't busy. And he sat at a booth as requested. The key word here is 'he'. They were not busy. 6 booths were open and there was no line. Did it ever occur to you that maybe a single woman isn't comfortable sitting by herself on a stool? STUPID STUPID STUPID move. That woman happens to be a nationally touring, award winning vocalist who is on the road the majority of the year. She happens to originally be from the north shore and rarely gets home. And all she wanted during a busy road schedule, after a late show last night, and before the long hours for her show tonight was a nice, peaceful breakfast. And you have to shove it up someone's ass sideways for going out of their way to get a comfortable meal alone without the noise. Even if for a moment. The manager was even argumentative not looking at the situation. It is completely understandable to try and pull that shit when it's busy. And as the argument went, she was planning to order enough that the check would have reflected the amount of two diners. She's on the road a lot. People around here recognize her. Even if they don't, knuckle daggers sitting at the counter of most establishments often feel it necessary to throw stupid comments at women sitting alone, because they are that asinine. And our culture allows it, and this place feeds into it. Maybe she didn't want to deal with that. She just wanted to sit by herself. Alone. No hassles. Major fail. I was introduced to Shawsheen by a Merrimack college student. Perhaps my expectations were low, but I think not because I've returned twice since when visiting the area from Chicago, and I'll keep going. The food is fresh, local and delicious. It's a busy diner, complete with clanging plates. You can call it "lively" or "noisy," but not so much so that my 80 year old in-laws minded. They loved the place too! This was literally something I found at 5am while I could not sleep, woke up around 8 showered, out the door and on the way. The parking was relatively simple they have a small lot, but also street parking is available. When we walked in we were greeted by loud noise, people talking, various smells, the decor, food being made and consumed truly a delightful diner atmosphere. Jen O. Our waitress sat us down at a small table and so I began to search the menu. I went with a jumbo strawberry milk something right out of my own kitchen nice tall cold,glass of pink milk, my partner ordered a coffee which both were promptly brought to our table. The menu was great lots to choose from specials on the board and all over the diner which was fun it read the different quotes on the wall. I decided in Texas Johnny, side order of the freshly prepared spicy pork hash and single order of twisted French toast. My partner chose the salmon omelet with home fries. After our order Jen offered to move us to a bigger table because we would not fit at this small table with my ordering a taste of all things lol. She moved us and told us to take our stuff she would get the rest. Jen was very sweet and made us feel quite comfortable. As we chatted my partner began to drink my strawberry milk to taste, then after about a quarter glass decided it was some of the best she has had considering she doesn't like to drink milk, the coffee was normal coffee not burnt but nothing amazing. Our food came out about 8 minutes later piping hot. First was the twisted French toast which I thought "this is the single order" due to the large portion. Taking that first bite was amazing. Then came the spicy pork hash, which was pulled pork, grilled onions and pepper mixed with hash brown. This was all sorts of delicious!!! Next was my Texas Johnny which consisted of a corn meal pancake (Johnny) covered with a 3 egg omelet topped with chili. Chili was meaty, chunks of peppers opinions tomatoes black beans spices it was just tasty, coupled with Johnny cake and egg. I didn't put anything else on it because the favors were on point. My partner salmon omelet was good, a little heavy on the cream cheese and the salmon was a little dry but not enough to where the dish was in anyway diminished. She also had a side order or maple turkey back which were HUGE! She delightfully ate that up with toast that was pre-Buttered. The side of home fries were nicely cooked but a little under seasoned. As we both talked and are one could not help but notice the all female staff from cook to servers it was top notch service. When Jen was serving other tables other waitresses would come around to freshen up our coffee and ask how we enjoyed it. All in all after all that was consumed and then taken home we spent a little under $35 which felt to little considering all the large portions and the quality of the food. Shawsheen is a go to brunch/breakfast place!!! They serve delicious food. I love the Amy's Breakfast Toast they have, and their turkey bacon and hash browns are also wonderful. They also have really good muffin tops as well. I would definitely recommend for everyone to come give this place a try (you'll probably love it after you come!). It definitely can get very crowded on weekends, oftentimes with a line that can stretch out of the door. But today I went at 11:00am and it was quite empty which was nice. I've been three times and its now my daily go-to breakfast place, even though my hotel serves free breakfast! I have had poached eggs, fresh house-made corned beef hash, coffee, and a corn muffin. All to die for. There are some rules... the main one being "don't sit down at a dirty table" and "don't sit at the counter at a dirty spot". On Sunday, with a fairly full place (maybe there are twenty tables) there was a line out the door. I saw the "don't sit" rule broken a few times and it was met by scowls from the wait staff, but they never said a word. This is a true neighborhood place, the grill/kitchen is right out in the open so you can see your food prepared, and it won't break the bank. Awesome value for what they serve, and how they serve it. We live very.close to this place and have seen lines put.of the door almost every weekend. We wanted to go there for a while and finally we gad a chance this past weekend The place is very small and also prices are big. The food is I guess the same as other places since if u look at it how differebt can an omelet or waffle be I got veggie onelet with ghost pepper cheese which was def spicy and the omelet was the same as other people so was potatoes and hash brown. My wife had a plain waffle which looked really good The place is not bad at all but then again how different can a breakfast be since I felt I had same kind of omelet and orange juice at other places for cheaper price. We went here after a friend told us about their "homemade" spicy pork hash. We went on a Sunday morning before 9:00 and it was sold out. The waitress reports that it sells out in 1 day. Not sure how much they make or when a day starts but it was my loss. I went with the corned beef has which was decent, not too greasy. Parking was tight, and we waited for a waitress to seat us (no hostess) and wait for a table. The process seemed unorganized. Most of the help seems focused on the the counter and not too many are out in the dining room area. $10 omlettes. However, some creative items listed on the menu such as johnnycakes. Not to many places offer those anymore. They offer dinner on Fridays until 7:00. The thing is, I don't know many who eat this day and age before 7:00. We are both gluten-free and were so happy to see them cooking the pancakes on a separate griddle from the eggs and hash browns. Speaking of hash browns, they were the best I've ever had. This place is great! We are from Colorado and just stopped in for Brunch. We had the goddess omelette and and the super food omelette. Both were tasty, but the super food was yummier.... probably because of the goat cheese! We finished off by splitting the coffee cake muffin, which was grilled and absolutely delicious! We have visited the Luncheonette in the past, but a new addition to the family brought us back to Andover! The last time we dined was in June on the day before my wedding. Of course I ate like a bird worried about fitting into my dress, but I'm so happy I got to indulge in a delicious bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich during this visit! The croissant it was served on was huge! It was also buttery, flaky and delicious. The portions of egg cheese and meat were great too. And the bacon was crispy just the way I like it.
