Stopped by to buy some specific yarn called for in various patterns out of current popular knitting magazines but they had none of the yarn I needed and no equivalent substitutes with same gauges. Was sorry to leave empty handed as I love supporting these little yarn shops -- if we don't, then we'll all be stuck with only big chains like Michaels with cheap yarn and that would be a miserable knitter's existence. No complaints about service. Was happily helped by a lady behind the counter while there was a knitting gathering going on in the store. All my questions were answered. read more

Difficult to find from the outside; no visible sign near the street to indicate presence of store in shopping area (we almost gave up -- we thought the business closed down). The shop was to the right of a karate school, and marked YARN. Inside, the store is nice and quaint. It is not a big shop; the inventory available was less than what I expected/hoped. There was a lot of cotton/linen yarn available at this visit, perhaps in anticipation of summer, while I was looking more for silk, bamboo, and wool blends. Although the sales woman at the counter seemed friendly to other customers, she somewhat ignored me. Although she did greet me briefly upon entering the store. Perhaps I exuded vehement independence or I seemed too scary. However, when I asked for help for a bamboo yarn in dark purple, she did assist me politely. I did not purchase anything, although I did drool over the selection of Crystal Palace bamboo needles. While on vacation from the SF Bay Area, this was my first visit to this store. read more

I walked in here looking for a specific type of yarn for my knitting project. When I first walked in Peggy was helping another customer, and two patrons were sitting at the long table in the store busily knitting. I felt a bit awkward and looked around at the yarn for a couple minutes. Peggy quickly finished with her customer and proved to be a great help in finding what I needed. She was knowledgeable and happy to help. Wonderful service. I think the store itself is pretty cute: small, inviting, cozy, and surrounded with walls of colorful yarn. I would definitely come back here again because it's one of those independent stores I'd like to support. Plus I think the more one goes, the more one appreciates it's atmosphere. read more

I went to this delightful shop today on a mini self-made yarn crawl while on vacation. The owner was there along with several ladies sitting at a table knitting together. Not only is their yarn selection amazing but they were so nice to deal with and I felt pretty good about spending close to $100 there! They threw in a little Lantern Moon knitting needle case for free and gave me cards and flyers in case I'm ever in the area again. So nice to see that some yarn stores still care about great service. read more

I had the most horrible experience in this knitting store. I am a novice and needed help sewing my project together. I gave them my beautiful blanket with the promise to call me with cost and time frame. Two weeks later I had to chase them down. A week later the finisher called me with an outrageous price. After that I did get a call that it was done. I walked into the store and they informed me that they only except cash. Really, you could have mentioned that so I would be ready. Anyway after a trip to the bank to get cash I walked into the store. I mentioned that I was unhappy and all the owner could do is count the money. Not a word! Not I am sorry! Nothing if your a happy knitter stay away from this store!! The owner did call me. Apparently, they don't have procedure for sending knitting out. I totally understand. Hopefully they will rectify that situation read more

Last summer, I walked in wanting to learn to knit. The proprietor helped me select a project. I then sat down at the table and had excellent instruction as well as a lot of fun. When I hit a snag in the pattern, I ran back to the store and they graciously kept me going. This store is a GEM! read more

I always frequent the local yarn stores when I go somewhere, so I was happy to find this store just a short bus-ride away from the Hyatt Regency. I found some great yarn that I'll knit something with and I'll remember that I was in Newport Beach whenever I see it! Oh, and take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. Never show up at a yarn shop thinking they're going to finish your project for you. Everyone was perfectly friendly and helpful. I saw yarns that I don't find at my LYS, so that's why I visited! Loved this shop! Was in the area to visit with my BFF who flew to the area to see her son!! We had a list off all the shops in the area! This was the number one shop!! Love the great selection of yarn!! Spent way more than I planned cuz of a beautiful Atenti Yarn bag that I had to have!! We were on a yarn "high" after this shop!! As with the other reviewers, I think the service here is amazing. There are so many yarn shops where you walk in and feel like you're intruding on a close-knit group of friends, and the people who work at the store don't try to make you feel different. Totally not the case at the Sheared Sheep. Everyone that works here is lovely... so nice and friendly, and incredibly helpful. They also have a great selection of yarns at reasonable prices. During my last visit, I ended up buying some bamboo yarn and Lisa showed me an adorable baby dress that was knitted from the same yarn. I loved it, so I called her today to ask for the pattern and she immediately offered to email it to me since it's not convenient for me to drop in. See, they are SO NICE! I've never had that level of service from a yarn store before. read more

The new location is fantastic! and as usual the staff is there to help and please. The new lighting and extra windows gives the shop an open feeling. Love all the new knitted projects on display. It's been five years since I shopped at Sheared Sheep. Whoa....yeah...where did the time go? The shop has so many beautiful yarns and everybody is friendly. You know how you visit some yarn shops and you're either ignored or pressured to buy? Neither of those things happened here. Peggy, one of the owners, was so helpful and suggested yarns for the weight I was looking for, but I never got the feeling she'd be pissed if I didn't buy. Yet, I wanted to, because I want to support local business whenever I can and because she was so nice. The shop is small and things are packed in there, but I happen to like yarn shops like that. A sweet place and I'd venture to say it's the best yarn shop in the area, all round. read more

I'm from out of town visiting Newport for a few weeks and was in a knit jam which required a bit of expert help to get me back on the right track to finish a project. Peggy, the owner, was welcoming, pleasant, instructional and patient with me. I was so grateful for her calming explanation and repair of my project. She made sure I knew what to look for in the future so if it happened, I could correct it myself. Love Sheared Sheep! Peggy is wonderful! What a lovely store! We were visiting Newport Beach and I decided to check out the local yarn store. We are so glad we did!! My daughter (12) and I went in and were delighted with the gorgeous selection of yarns, accessories and patterns. So many yarn brands I have not heard of. Beautiful, light, colorful, natural, delightful fibers fill the store. There are many completed projects with the yarns in stock so I could make an educated decision to buy yarn with a project in mind instead of just a few skeins because I love the hand and color. I finally settled on a poncho pattern for a delightful, airy silk and baby alpaca blend. I will be back the next time we visit to pick up a hand made solid wood rotating yarn dispenser and more gorgeous yarn. Peggy even gave me the plastic sleeve with the pattern. Great customer service!!! The shopping center it's in is really cute too. Next time we come we will take time for a coffee or something to eat as well. read more

So nice to me. Clean, uncluttered and stock changes with the seasons. I love they are open Sundays. The knitting classes look fun, haven't tried it yet. Prices are reasonable for quality and they have some good sales. I was looking for something weird and they were nice about it and order it for me and gave me a call when it came in. read more

I love Sheared Sheep. The shop is small but neatly organized with a wonderful selection. Peggy and Shelby are fantastic and very helpful when you are trying to select the right type of yarn for a project. They have never steered me wrong. The yarn is not cheap but is a high quality product. For me that is important as I want something that looks good after I have spent countless hours on it. Also, Martha and Laura's class are great, does not matter if you are a beginner or advanced student. Plus the women in the class are just awesome. Also, it is drop in which is great for my hectic lifestyle. ;). I never thought I would be able to knit half the things I do thanks to the owners, instructors and fellow students. read more

I loved the store! Very nice energy, I bought from them not because I needed anything but because I wanted to support it! The girl behind the counter was very helpful to her customers but not overbearing and the store is very warm and inviting. I took off a star because it's a little hard to find if you don't know exactly where it is and it's a bit pricey although you have to consider it is in Newport Beach. I also didn't feel they had that much of a selection or stock in some yarns as compared to many yarn stores but that could just be that they are about to re-order. If i lived in Newport Beach I would probably be a regular here just for the nice environment. read more

You can't go wrong with Sheared Sheep. I never write reviews for anything, but I had to make an exception here, because my experience was so contrary to these other reviewers'. Every time I've gone to the shop Peggy and Jeanette have taken such good care of me. (Jeanette even stayed open a little past 5:00 for me one night when I called, rushing over from work.) They have a significant amount of high quality yarns on hand, competitive prices for what you're getting, and every time I've gone in I've left happier than when I arrived. They're very knowledgeable and kind. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. I'm a total novice, and they both patiently walked me through what I would need for the project I'm making.
