I went to Sheldons for the first time this past friday. A friend & I both got Iced Lavender Chai, which was delicious. She got a Veggie Benedict & I got a Bacon Benedict, both were okay. My poached eggs had a cooked solid yolk. I give a 3 star rating for a few reasons. I felt the Benedicts were overpriced for not coming with any kind of side.. Homefries, fruit, salad, something on the side would make sense for charging $12.50.. I also was caught off guard by, when ordering at the counter, was told "We ask that you dont stay longer than an hour & bus your own table." Several weeks ago my wife and her friends had breakfast at Sheldon's. My wife raved about the food and insisted we go there some time for breakfast. I hoped she would forget this as the name, "Sheldon's Service Station", really didn't excite my culinary appetite. Stupid me - people in relationships should know the other person never forgets! So after she mentioned Sheldon's perhaps a dozen times over the following weeks I finally succumbed to the fate that I should probably accompany her to Sheldon's for breakfast. OMG, how glad I am that I did experience Sheldon's. OK, as you've probably already picked up Sheldon's is a historic La Mesa service station (long closed) which has been renovated as a cafe. There is plenty of outdoor seating. I liked the outdoor seating was not linear with tables laid out in rows. The tables were well spaced and somewhat randomly positioned. And now the most important thing, the food! Wife and I ordered one Chilaquiles which we were going to split. While waiting for breakfast we sat and sipped our iced coffee which was good. After perhaps ten minutes a staff member brought the Chilaquiles to our table with one serving plate. The staff member was attentive, noted one order and two people and asked if we wanted another serving plate to split the order. (Actually a good catch instead of just setting the order on the table and departing). The Chilaquiles was beautifully presented in a large bowl... I was impressed as it looked both different and better than I'd seen in other restaurants. And then the dish itself - scrumptiously delicious!! It was enough for us two light eaters to split but it was so good that I could have happily finished one order myself. Based upon first visit 4-stars, but if future visits and dishes remain as memorable then a 5th star may be waiting! read more

Love, love, love this place! I am on a very strict diet, so on the days I allow myself to "binge", I look forward to my indulgence without guilt. The eggs benedict are the best in town, bar none, and trust me, I have sampled the offerings in some of the top hotels and restaurants in the County. The sauce is tangy -- theirs is the only benedict to which I don't have to add lemon juice-- and the staff have no problem substituting avocado for bacon. There is no guilt because as sumptuous as the dish is, the portion is delicate and not burdened with a lot of unwanted extras. The soups are unusual, the sandwiches satisfying and the muffins --well the muffins are sinful, which is what keeps me from eating here more often. The only thing that would make Sheldon's better would be if the muffins were calorie-free. That, and if they had more parking. But I guess the occasional long walk is the answer to the muffin dilemma. The staff are very pleasant and helpful, and I love playing with OPDs (other people's dogs). Small selection of fun healthy breakfast entrees. All outdoor patio seating. Cool concept of the first gas station in la Mesa. Had a cappuccino, Milanese toast, and chilaquiles. Coffee was decent, Milanese toast I would definitely recommend, (be even better with a lox addition). Chilaquiles. Skip it. Not much going on there. You'll end up with a slightly soggy pile of chips with a few bits of tomatillo salsa & beans, and overcooked egg. Definitely needs some additional substance. In addition, not a very busy Sunday but service was a little lacking in the time it took to prepare food. Overall room for improvement with good space & potential. read more

This place is amazing top to bottom. I have eaten here a few times now and I can definitely say that the food, coffee and service are all excellent. Coffee is my lifeblood and this place delivers. My favorite drink is an ice vanilla latte. I always am trying to find the right balance of espresso and vanilla syrup. Most places make them too sweet. Sheldon's has it down to a science, so much so, that I drive out to la Mesa to get coffee now. The toasts are a great example of the food quality. From the avocado to the egg, everything is fresh and made with care. Today I tried the mushroom soup and I enjoyed it very much. Every time I come here I am greeted by not only the staff, but the owners as well. Everyone is super friendly and they seem to genuinely care about my experience. I am glad this place opened and I will be coming here to hang out on the patio for many years to come. read more

I love the atmosphere and location. The business owner did a great job in making this a local gem while still giving a nod to its old roots. The menu is pretty creative especially compared to most breakfast places around town and SD. A few observations though... - When ordering food it is a little awkward when the line is forming at the main circulation and other people need to get to the restroom. Maybe just hold the other swing door open? - Food is a bit pricey, $9 for a bowl of quinoa. Maybe make the portion more appropriate and lower the price? If you happen to have a special dietary request, holding the (fill in the blank) would make your food even pricier! Again love this spot, I would go here more if it didn't cost a family of (3) a $50 breakfast. read more

Sheldons has good food options and tasty coffees. I would say they are pretty pricey, however. 2 breakfast bowls and a coffee to go was around $30-$40.. and the breakfast bowls don't come with toast or anything. read more

Seats are outside so it's beautiful when the weather's nice - which is most of the time here in SD so enjoy! I had probably the best lemon poppyseed muffin ever here. However my chilaquiles were more like nachos with poached eggs, tomatoes, beans, and cotija cheese. Also they didn't match the blue corn description that I ordered. First expressions were stellar! The staff was super friendly and helpful with all my questions about the menu. I landed on the tuna salad sandwich and açaí bowl. Tuna was excellent, not soaked in mayo like most places and had great flavor. They had an excellent hot sauce with smoke flavor to it that added some heat. (On the side of course) açaí bowl was excellent the granola was high quality and fresh. The fresh fruits went really well with the sweat sorbet and the honey added another level of flavor to the granola. Over all excellent service and food. read more

Great patio, food looks amazing (haven't eaten here yet), but enjoyed coffee a few times and love working on the patio. Staff has been extremely friendly and even brought out my drink every time I was here. Above and beyond friendly when I needed a reheat on my peppermint mocha. Met some of the investors and they were friendly as well happy to be open in La Mesa providing some great places to go. Excited to check out Blvd Noodle soon too when they open. Called in an order a few days ago. I had the breakfast croissant. It tasted like classic, homemade breakfast, so delicious. The croissant was nice and fluffy and eggs were cooked the perfection. Always enjoy my food when I eat here :) read more

A bit disappointed. This place is right on the corner from where I work. I finally decided to try this place for lunch break, called me order in over the phone ahead of time. The girl said 15 mins. Walked down after 20 mins and food was not ready, and was told my order was never put in to the kitchen. Ok? 10 mins goes by and my order is brought to me. I open it to find a salad when I actually ordered a tuna salad sandwich. I send it back to the kitchen and they quickly remake my order. It's brought to me in a bag and told he checked it's 100% correct this time. I walked up to my work, sat down to eat, opened the box and it was a chicken sandwich.... not tuna salad. Walked back down to sheldons and had them fix it AGAIN. Third times the charm right? No. Though it was tuna salad this time, it was not made how I ordered at all. Super disappointing. I had higher hopes for this place. Perhaps after some time I will try eating in next time and give it another try. read more

Unfortunately it was never followed through...until...the new owner contacted me and apologized and made good on his promise. This is not great for breakfast. This is a coffe shop that "also" does breakfast. Great coffee and pastries. The breakfast options are very meager cost about 10 bucks a pop for latkas with no flavor-i.e. Hash browns with chives. Overall I would go for coffee for sure but I would never eat their for breakfast with so many other better options. read more

Fast, easy good food. Outdoor seating only and very dog friendly. Order at the counter here and they bring it to you. Had latkes. Delicious. Lox bagel was also very good. We brought our dogs. If you don't want to be around dogs, this may or may not be for you, depending on the crowd. We will be back! read more

My kids took me here for breakfast. I thought it was good, but the service was terrible. I applaud that they serve wholesome food, but it is a small patio, always crowded, and the music was terrible. You have to order your food, and there was no option of sitting inside. There was some caterwauling person who had no musical ability drowning out conversation. Still, I loved the omelet and the latte. I would go here again, but only on a less busy day. read more

I just ordered a BLAT for lunch. There was no avocado on my $11 sandwich, the bacon was chewy, and the bread was too thick. I would have sent it back, but no one came to our table to check on us. First time first impression is what determines if I will patronize a place again or bring friends and family. So this is a new eatery in the village and I am disappointed to say that my first impression and experince was not a a positive one. To start, they have a very limited menu and specialize primarily in sort of breakfast brunch like items. we went here for lunch and I had Arugula salad with a description of items that seemed very apetizing and my other party had what looked to be a BLT except that it had spring salad mix in it and a spread of guacamole. so here is where the our first impression comes in....The menu specifically states AVOCADO and not guacamole and so we were expecting sliced avocado.....the Arugula salad description said balsamic vinigertte dressing with cheese and sliced pear.....very disappointed, the dressing was just oil, no flavor of balsamic whatsoever, dont know what kiind of chees it was but it was white, very bland with no flavor and had the consistency of yogurt....YUCK!!! and the quality of the Arugula was not good as there were wilted and yellow & brown leaves in the mix...did the person mixing the salad not see it??!!! The cashier who took our order was a little attitudish...the person i was with also noticed it. And so we go to sit at our table of choice and we are thinking how are they going to know where to serve our food.....instead of giving placard numbers so that they know where to serve the food, they instead called out your name..seriously??? I dont need everyone knowing my name.. And so the first time first impression was not a good one and i dont think there will be a second visit anytime soon. read more

Came here on a Sunday for breakfast. Service was very friendly. Coffee is fantastic. Very clean, pleasant atmosphere. My problem and the reason for only 3 stars was the potato latke eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfect and the sauce was good. The latkes were not good at all. Way to thick and they tasted like they were made yesterday. Very dry and not much flavor. Two of us at the table ordered these and both of us left most of the latkes on the plate. I'll try this restaurant one more time and order something other than the latkes. read more

I like Sheldon's a lot. I have been about 30 times. The avocado toasts are my favorite. They used to have incredible donuts but for some reason they don't make them anymore. It is good for veggies and meat eaters. Friendly atmosphere. I love sitting outside. It is nice if you have a bike or stroller. I like the music they play live. Overall great place. My kids love the lace. They really like the chai tea because it is so sweet. I don't love the chai because I hate super sweet but my kids can't get enough of it. They should water the plants more outside because every time I go the plants are half dead or dead. read more

I come here a lot before work because I love the outdoor seating, the coffee and food are great and the employees are all friendly. On the weekends i go here with my wife and kids and we eat breakfast and listen to the live music, which makes for a cool vibe. Was there for lunch to go. Staff super friendly. Think I met the owner or manager and he was also cordial and nice. I always try a pastry and a menu item for review. The blackberry muffin was awesome (brought in from Bread and Cie), coffee was Cafe Motto, not a fan but it works. Establishment was clean and inviting with a patio. Now the bummer for a new establishment, the BLAT sandwich on multigrain was dry, even with the bacon (maybe pork belly would be better). If there was supposed to be avocado on there it was a no show. The lettuce leaves used were closer to the center of the head, so they were bitter, and the sauce was also lacking. For both items=$14.00. Sorry to be the first one giving it 3 stars.
