    Hot Beef with Mashed Potato's
    Dennis E.

I stopped here at 12:30 for lunch and I was seated right away. My server came right over and gave me a menu and took my drink order. When she came back with my drink, I ordered the Hot Beef Sandwich along with mashed potatoes. After a short time, my meal was delivered, and it looked really good. There was a beef sandwich that was totally covered in rich beef gravy. In the center of the plate there was a big pile of mashed potatoes. The beef was extremely tender and flavorful. The beef gravy was creamy and rich, it covered very stiff mashed potatoes. They were cream and the gravy was perfect on top. The overall experience was very good. I felt I received more than my money's worth on the meal and the service was good as well. This is a nice little diner with a great vibe to it. I will be back.

I've been going to Shelley's for a couple of years now for breakfast. I've always enjoyed whatever I've ordered there . I typically order just standard breakfast fare. But what I've always liked about them is that although they have the same traditional foods that you might order at any greasy spoon, they are not greasy. It's nice to have eggs and hash browns that aren't swimming in fat. My wife ordered the bagel sandwich. And the bagel was delicious. It was very moist inside. Almost like a New York style boiled bagel. But we asked the waitress and she said they are just regular bagels. We forgot to ask the brand name. But I would like to know. Don't let the appearance of the outside keep you from coming to this little place. It's actually very nice and clean inside. The only reason I didn't give this place a five rating? Is because it is virtually inaccessible to handicapped people. If you are in a wheelchair or a walker, you'll have no problems getting up to the doorway. But the doorway is not very wide and not many wheelchairs would be able to get through it. And even if you could, the aileways are narrow and there would be no place to pull a wheelchair up to a table without blocking off the entire aisle. And it would be virtually impossible to get a wheelchair into there bathroom. Is there tables fixed against the wall right next to the doorway that you wouldn't be able to swing around to get in. If the door is even wide enough to get a wheelchair in.

    Shelley's Omelette with Potatoes

BEST OMELETTE I've ever had. My go to omelette place in Grand Rapids! I always get the Shelley's omelette, it has perfect ratio of avocado and cream cheese. Which I had never seen on an omelette before I stepped foot in here. Now I look for it anywhere else I go, I don't find it!! To be honest I've tried to recreate just the avocado and cream cheese ratio but it just cannot be done. You NEED the original to satisfy that craving. I now live farther away and sometimes make the drive up just for this place.

    Chocolate chip pancakes, huge

Shelley's Kitchen is the perfect place to stop in for breakfast before a busy day hitting up breweries in Grand Rapids Beer City. We came here for breakfast after our first night and it definitely reenergized us, fueled us for the day and hit the spot. It's definitely a hole in the wall, local dive diner with lots of charm, great food, and awesome friendly service. It's a small spot and we were lucky to grab a couple booths, as other patrons were leaving, for our large group of seven, on a busy bustling Saturday morning. The booths were pretty small and could have been more comfortable which was really my only complaint. The food was delicious and they gave huge portions. The menu was large with lots of options including egg, meat and potato combos, eggs Benedict, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, soups, salads and sandwiches. I chose the chocolate chip pancakes combo served with two strips of bacon and two eggs which I chose scrambled. The pancakes were HUGE! The size of my face! I probably would have just ordered the pancakes ala carte, had I known their size. I thought they were going to be more like silver dollar pancakes. After eating one, I was stuffed and surrendered defeat. The chocolate chip pancakes tasted homemade and were super fluffy and delicious! The eggs were also very tasty and the bacon was cooked perfectly crispy, just the way I like it. The coffee also tasted great. Another one of my friends ordered the tuna salad sandwich and a cup of soup and she also enjoyed it. Our server was friendly and attentive and our water glasses and coffee cups were always kept full and she checked on us frequently throughout our visit. She did clear our plates kind of hastily though and would have liked to have been offered a to-go box for my leftovers. Overall though, I had a great experience here. The food and service were great and I'd definitely recommend and return the next time I'm in town for breakfast.

I was surprised at how long it took for the 2 hosts to greet us - as we were standing directly in front of them. They were talking to one another, and it was probably work related, but to just stand there staring at them for a couple minutes while they ignored us was awkward. When they finally talked to us they weren't very friendly. Anyway, we made our way to the bar and it was full except for 3 seats. I think the bartender waiting on us was new. He seemed like he was pretty overwhelmed/in the weeds. He greeted us quickly and brought us waters when he did, which I appreciated. I ordered a Blackeberry Bourbon Sour and my Mr had Paloma Nuestra. We both enjoyed our drinks they were refreshing and well crafted. For dinner I had a really hard time deciding! I wanted to try so many things! Our bartender said his favorite thing in the menu is the chicken and rice bowl. That was something I was considering and decided to go with that. Excellent recommendation! The chicken was flavorful and so tender. The hot peppers were a nice touch. There was a lot of food too! I couldn't finish it all. Mr had the hanger steak that was served with mushroom and asparagus risotto. He said the risotto was the best he's ever had, and I agree. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and so was the steak. The space is really nice, felt intimate without being overcrowded. We are looking forward to coming back!

What a disappointment, but not nearly as much as our experience at 123 Tavern. We came in at 4:15PM before the Brandi Carlile show needing a table for a party of 8-10. The place was fully booked (but only half full at that time) except the bar (first-come, first-served). Fair enough -- but from the moment we walked up, the manager at the host stand couldn't have cared less. She quoted a two-hour wait, shut down my question about sitting outside with a flat no, and pointed us toward the bar. No sense of customer service at all. Like zero. The three of us who were there took the last open seats at the bar. Then came the real show: one bartender for the entire restaurant AND bar. He ignored us for ten minutes. My wife and friend got their beers quickly -- but my bourbon sat finished at the service station for another seven minutes while I watched the large ice cube melting as it marinated there. When I finally asked where my drink was, I got "I'm working on it." When he did finally bring it, he pushed it across the bar at me -- no apology, no eye contact, his attention on anything but me. I'll be honest about what I can't prove: I've worked in this industry a long time, and the whole thing read like my service got intentionally slow-walked. My drink held back while everyone around me was taken care of. Maybe the front manager said something after our rocky start at the host stand. Maybe they're just all bad at their jobs. I can't tell you which. I can only tell you how obvious it felt from the barstool. Everything after was the same; menus, ordering, closing out, all a slog. I had to hunt down that same manager for our check so we could get to the show, and she was all attitude, zero help. We only escaped because my wife flagged a server who found a another manager. His response to hearing all this? "I'm sorry." Nothing else. No attempt to make it right. For the first time in my life, I left $0 on a $100 tab. I'm a 25%+ tipper. That's how badly this went. Here's the thing, 123 Tavern: if you're going to bill yourself as a place to gather before events, staff the place and train your managers to act like they want customers there. Until then, I'll spend my money somewhere that values it.

At first I was hesitant because of the price, and it being biscuits, but they made me eat those words and more. It was like a large biscuit muffin top with jalapeño, cheese and honey glaze (I think) and it came with a white cheddar cheese sauce to dip it in that was outrageously delicious. For a guy who hates cheddar biscuits, I've got to say I'm blown away. My wife ordered the steak with fingerling potatoes and carrots. It was on the pricier side, but yet again well worth it. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the veggies were pretty good too. They had live music playing as well tonight. It was a jazzy kind of vibe and it didn't over power anyone talking or anything. The guy had some serious skill too. To top it off, we had some pretty killer service from everyone there. From the hostess taking our names, random servers walking around, and our fantastic server (I forget her name but she was blonde and worked upstairs and had a a really great attitude. The expo or food runner dropping our food off anticipated us possibly needing an extra plate and brought one without asking which was super awesome and ended up coming in handy ( I knew my wife wouldn't finish that steak alone) and she brought it without asking and was ready with a smile to get more. I used to be a GM (I hate when people use this saying but...) truly I know how hard it is to find good workers and the folks running it here seem to have it down. I come from a place where you have to drive 100 mi or more for average service. So seeing exceptional service is really almost too good to be true. I'd definitely stop in for a bite. It's worth every penny. We'll be back for dessert, they have seasonal crème brûlées!

I dined at TOG today for a business lunch and, unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing…read more At the end of our meal, I asked for a to-go box because I had barely touched my food. My guest and I spent most of our lunch talking, and I left with nearly an entire meal. About 20 minutes after leaving, I realized I had forgotten my box and immediately called the restaurant to see if it was still there. The young lady who answered the phone asked where I had been seated. I explained that I was at the very first table at the front of the restaurant. Within seconds, she told me there was nothing there. Her tone made it clear that assisting me was not a priority. Given that the hostess stand is located at the back of the restaurant and I was seated at the front, I do not believe there was enough time for her to actually check before dismissing my concern. After I sent an email regarding the situation, the hostess responded that she had walked through the restaurant looking for the box. Based on the timing of our phone conversation, I find that difficult to believe. In her response, she also stated that she checked with the servers after our call had ended, which suggests that no real effort was made while I was on the phone. What is most disappointing is that I am a regular customer. Today, I paid $56.00 for lunch for myself and my business guest. Between a server who was largely absent throughout the meal and the dismissive interaction when I called about my forgotten food, the level of service fell far below what I have come to expect. Everyone has an occasional bad day, but customer service is often defined by how issues are handled after something goes wrong. In this case, I felt dismissed rather than helped. Unfortunately, after today's experience, I do not plan to return.

The team is organized, quick and very nice! Note they do sell out fast but as to be expected they have amazing food! The portion sizes are HUGE! We split the fries between a family of four (two small children, two adults) and it was perfect! There fried pickles are no joke! They are spears and you get a bunch! They also have the best sweet potatoe fries! Very crispy and seasoned well. And the main event was the smash burgers! They were still pretty thick but packed so much flavor! The patty had a nice crispy edge and those caramelized onions were amazing with the American cheese! We also had a crispy chicken sandwich what made it was the avocado spread because overall the patty was a little bland. Maybe a spicy option would be an idea! We also tried the onion rings and those were great too! Things to note for consumers: they offer ketchup packets maybe like 2 or 3 per order (we had a lot of fried food so it didn't seem enough for all we got plus we had 4 people sharing these). Because we had a ton I would have loved a ketchup pump or at least a ton more packets. As far as dipping sauces, they have an array of flavors but they charge for each one. That adds up quickly. Maybe the first one free with your sides? Sides are called "beach bites" and they are $8 each. Well priced and hefty on portions! We saw people getting the chicken bites and let me tell you those plates were literally stacked! And they looked super crispy! Burgers and sandwiches range from $10-16 depending on what you get. Lots of great options! The line was LONG!!! But they give you a beeper with a number on it once you place and pay for your order. That helps keep people from piling up in front of the window. What a great idea! The vibe of this food truck is definitely that fun beachy feel. I would recommend this food truck over and over again!
