I stayed at Shelter Harbor Inn with friends, and the property is absolutely breathtaking. It is quaint, charming, and whimsical, with beautiful private grounds filled with wildflowers, tree swings, a gorgeous patio, and yard games. It truly feels like a hidden gem. Our suite was adorable, and the beds and couches were extremely comfortable. The large deck was a highlight, but it would benefit from more furniture and having the wood treated, as several of us got splinters. The deck lights were also very bright at night for those sleeping in the common area. A small kitchenette with a mini fridge and sink would also be a great addition since there is plenty of space. The staff were friendly, helpful, and accommodating, and the other guests were kind and respectful. The property also appears to be dog-friendly, which is a great bonus. The shuttle to the private beach was excellent, and the beach was absolutely stunning. The water was crystal clear, and the white sand made it feel like we were in the Caribbean. One of the most beautiful beaches I've ever visited! We also ate at the Shelter Harbor Inn restaurant. The atmosphere was beautiful, but the food was disappointing. The French onion soup was excellent, but the calamari was very salty, the mussels lacked flavor, and my filet was overcooked with bitter-tasting spinach. A side sauce helped, but the meal still fell short. I would absolutely stay here again. The property, grounds, beach access, and overall atmosphere are truly special. We went for dinner, as we do every year when we are in the area. You can sit in the dining room,in the bar area or outside.. fortunately, the dining room was quiet so we chose that. However, unfortunately, we both found our dishes to be on the bland side. My sister had a clam, sausage and pasta dish, which she felt needed much more garlic and spicing in general. I had Caesar salad with steak. My steak was cooked perfectly and was a nice piece of meat. The dressing however, I also found to be flat. We both had the clam chowder and were happy with that. We've been coming to Shelter Harbor Inn Restaurant since 1983, through its many incarnations, some better than others. Last night was a pleasant surprise, with a few standout dishes that will definitely bring us back. The pot belly fried clams and French fries were among the best I've ever had, crisp, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The linguine with white clam sauce and the chowder were also delicious. Both fish entrées featured incredibly fresh seafood; while the toppings could use a little fine-tuning, they came close to hitting the mark. Our waitress, Betty, was wonderful, attentive, warm, and efficient. I noticed renovations underway, and I hope they include updates to make the dining room feel cozier and more inviting. If noise continues to be an issue, some simple sound mitigation could go a long way. Overall, a promising visit with excellent service and several memorable dishes. We'll be back! read more

Teresa the wedding coordinator did everything she could possible to make a perfect day!. The manager and staff couldn't do enough for us. When going over rooms, the room we picked we were told there would be heaters, plural, there was one small heater so we were all FREEZING (19 of us). First of all I was blown away by uncompromized luxurious ambiance, a rare, successfully realized concept, of a idyllic farmhouse, a vision, somehow carried off a design in tasteful and unpretentious manner by a confident hand. Bravo! I liked the welcoming and friendliness of the surprisingly numerous staff, despite it being a winter midweek night, tucked away at the end of quiet country lane. Its multiple snall lounges, several small dining areas, each one with vigorously stoked by log fireplaces. It seemed something out a period movie set, Unlike most upscale establishments, I felt quite comfortable, except for the score of large life sized sheep statues, white, and one black, which which for some reason, repeatedly startled me. They posed randomly around the entrances and front rooms,, struck me as sinister presences. as inadvertently backed up into them. I realize that that I might be alone with my sensitivity. Have stayed here 3 times over the years, as a friend was participating in a golf tournament at the Shelter Harbor Golf Club each time. The Inn dates back to the early 1800's when it was a farmhouse. It now is an unpretentious country inn with 24 guest rooms each furnished in an eclectic mix of antiques and country beach cottage decor. Some of the rooms have working fireplaces. This is a comfortable quaint establishment. I felt like I was staying in a bed and breakfast. Perhaps my grandmothers house! I was more relaxed being in the common areas of the inn reading than in my room. You have to be comfortable with this type of arrangement. A full breakfast is included with your room rate. The restaurant serves dinner too offering an updated modern menu with a full bar. Nice wine selection. All meals here were enjoyed. Had some excellent oysters here on a cold rainy day. Wait staff was attentive. During the spring the grounds are stunning. They also have their own private beach in Weekapaug, a natural barrier beach stretching for two miles along the shores of Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. I never personally checked out the beach because it was freezing cold on all of my visits in May. My last stay was May 2017. Staff was fine. Sometimes I had to roam around to find someone.Like searching your own house for your cat or your child playing hide and go seek!!! Planned a surprise dinner for my wife's birthday, when I made the reservation they offered me a private dining room!!( we had 12 guests & two children. ) the entire evening could not have gone any better. When I arrived with my wife, all of our guests & family were seated in a very comfortable couch area with a huge fireplace, our server ,(Betty) was amazing, from cocktail hour all through dessert she was on point, and so attentive to our needs. Now the food: the appetizers were delivered hot and so flavorful . Must try's: the crispy cauliflower & the mushroom truffle soufflé . We had a variety of menu items , again all were delivered hot and in a timely fashion. Every guest raved about the entree's and accompaniments. Creative, fresh and delicious. Must try's : seared scallops, beef short rib & pork shank! ( the Salmon was delicious as well.) I highly recommend The Shelter Harbor Inn, from the decor, fresh creatively prepared appetizers & entree's , great drink selection and a 5 star wine selection, do not hesitate to make your reservations for dinner! We finally made it back to the SHI last night. As everyone knows by now, the Inn has been remodeled with new owners and leadership. Upon entering there is a short WC ramp that provides easy access. There is also one disability marked parking space adjacent to the entrance. The parking lot is loose gravel making WC access a bit of a challenge until you get to the patio. So park close if you use a WC. The four of us were warmly greeted upon entrance and taken to our table in the bar area. The interior is very tastefully decorated. Our table was two chairs and a cushioned settee for two. Both men took the settee. The height of which is to low to be comfortable to eat even though both men are over 6'2". I recommend loose the settee's for chairs. Dinner service was polite and crisp. Specials were provided along with the menu. This was the third occasion our guests to eat at the SHI post remodel and our first. The menu was diverse with options for all tastes. We started by splitting a special Calamari appetizer ($12). It was very good. Splitting the portion is best for two. But that was our decision. For entrees we had Blackened Shrimp & Grits ($23), the Halibut special ($26), Salmon ($27) and Pasta & Clams ($24). The Halibut and Salmon were reported as very good and the portions honest. The Shrimp & Grits was good, but reported a bit spicy. I tasted it. Honestly, I would have preferred more spice. I like hot spicy food. I had the Pasta & Clams which I thought was very tasty. A solid white sauce with 6 clams. I recommend add some chopped clams to the sauce to make it more robust and put this entree over the top as a best seller. For dessert three split an Apple Pie a la mold served in a "coffee cup" ($8) and a Brownie with ice cream ($8). Both were reported as good. So with six glasses of wine, tax and tip we were out the door for ($275). Also as this was our guests 3rd dining experience post reopening, they both indicated that the menu and food was improved. We had our wedding at Shelter Harbor on November 5, 2023 which was rescheduled from October 1, 2023. Paula was so accommodating and paid very close attention to detail with all my special requests! My husband and I knew how wonderful the food was as we already enjoyed dining there and all our guests commented on how delicious the food was. Rating is based on restaurant experience. My husband hosted my birthday dinner here. At first, all seemed decent. I even noticed the gorgeous flower arrangement decor centerpiece. This is where things get bad. 2 of our friends who were unable to make it to dinner texted my husband the next day to inquire if I got my flowers and card - the birthday gift they had delivered from a florist in EG. He said we had not. She called and talked to the manager of the inn who advised that "people leave flowers all the time and he TOOK THEM HOME TO HIS WIFE!" These we're not decor - we did not bring decorative flowers, balloons, birthday decor. They were a gift meant for me with a card. They never told me, but instead took the card out and used as the centerpiece, then took them home. She told him to bring them back. He said they would be at the inn by 8am the next morning. This is an inn, a restaurant and bar...so at 7 pm after work, my husband and I drove 30 minutes to pick them up ...only to find the inn was closed. Restaurant and bar closed. Doors locked. Googled to see they are only open Wed-Sun. He didn't tell anyone this. We left and tried calling again Tuesday. No answer. It is now Wednesday. The flowers are 5 days old, and all I have is one video I took of the guests and flowers at the birthday dinner. For those who order flowers, I'm sure you understand that they are not cheap to order and have delivered. I would have brought them home if I knew. I had no indication that they were mine and no reason to believe I should just "take" the restaurant centerpiece home with me. These were a gift and the manager of this restaurant, who I saw and we spoke with several times during dinner, intentionally stole them to bring home. This review is for the restaurant... Yikes, this place is not good and it is expensive! The ambiance is nice and the owners did a beautiful job renovating the reception and restaurant area. The staff are all friendly and attentive. But wow the food is really bad and overpriced, we were so disappointed. The $14 cocktail was also bad - my husband said it tasted like the bartender went to CVS and mixed all the cough syrups together. Oof. Two of us had a bad dinner for over $100. The Inn's restaurant - Farmhouse Kitchen + Bar - offers delicious food in a warm, rustic environment. Judging by other reviews the property appears to has undergone significant reinvestment over the last few years, and based upon my recent dining experience here, it was worth every penny. The dinner menu isn't especially big but there is a excellent range of options that'll satisfy anybody. The waitstaff were friendly and energetic. Pricing is on the higher end but appropriate for the quality and portions. Looking forward to coming back again! read more

My wife and I have been going to the Shelter Harbor Inn for the past 3 years when we are in Westerly. This is your very typical old New England Inn, very warm and inviting. We prefer to eat at the tables in the Bar as the room is nice and bright with lots of windows. The menu provides enough variety to satisfy almost all tastes. I have tried most on it and can say that the filet mignon is excellent and the scallops are a very close second. I am usually not a big dessert person but I am a fan of Indian Pudding and theirs is out of this world. It comes piping hot with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. My mouth is watering as I write this. The staff here could not be more willing to assist with honest comments regarding selections which I find useful. Can't stand going to a place and having the staff tell you everything is good only to then pick the worst thing on the menu. It is a real plus for us that this is open year round as we are back and forth to Westerly on a monthly basis and most places there close for the winter months. I have been staying here on my way to Block Island for years. We love it here. It feels like an old family home... not a motel. Our room is always clean, with everything we could need. A fire place, toiletries, comfy clean linens and towels. I don't need a ton of attention, just a nice place to feel relaxed and a simple breakfast. If you are looking for upscale, this isn't it...but a family run comfy place, that does not cost a fortune, here it is. As for bad reviews, gosh, people- lighten up!! We booked a one night stay and signed up for the beach getaway. I contacted the inn about arrangements, as no one followed up with me, and I was originally sent the banquet menus following my call (not the picnic options). We arrived at the inn and were able to check in early; this was terrific. The lunches were waiting for us and we were able to get on a shuttle to the beach straight away. Access to the beach was a real privilege for us and Jared was helpful and on time. We loved this aspect of your service. It was disappointing that the closure of the bar and restaurant on Monday and Tuesday meant that there were no refreshments or food available to us at the inn. Arriving from our drive, and from the beach, we were starving and there were no options for us except bottled water. Also disappointing that car services weren't available and staff didn't have an alternative to Uber, which we were told was unreliable, or the one taxi service that was unavailable. The cheat sheet to our room was helpful, but we would have loved more information about what we could do recreationally nearby. We saw bikes outside but no one mentioned them to us. Where could you ride them? Was there a tennis court? Were the fire pits outside in use? Did the staff have walks to recommend to guests? Our room in the main house was cheerful and inviting, but the bed was rather uncomfortable. We returned from a dinner around 11 pm and discovered a bag of refreshments from Honey Dew donuts at reception. Perhaps this was for breakfast in the morning, but it seemed odd. Breakfast in the morning was also disappointing: boxed Golden Grahams cereal, outsourced muffins and croissants, cold oats and eggs. We loved visiting Watch Hill and greatly enjoyed the shuttle service to the beach. But considering there were no other amenities available to us, I find our stay was far overpriced ($500+) for what it was: average accommodation with no food or beverage options and mediocre service. Currently, I wouldn't recommend the inn to others and we would look for another inn or hotel in the area on a return trip. read more

This charming inn and restaurant is a favorite of my boyfriend's mother, who lives down the road from here, so during a recent stay with her, we decided to take her and her best friend out for dinner to give her a break from cooking every evening. She is an excellent cook and we have very similar tastes in food so I was excited to try it. It's an absolutely darling place, reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting, and it has a very warm, comfortable vibe. Our dinner reservation was for a Monday night, a typically slow night for restaurants. On one hand, I enjoy going out on Mondays as it's often easier to get a table at a popular place, on the other hand, it's not always the "A-Team" that's working on Mondays and service/food sometimes falters accordingly. I suspect that was the case with Shelter Harbor Inn. We were seated in a lovely room near the fireplace, which wasn't on as it was a warm evening, but I can imagine how inviting it would be to seat here on a cool one. We started with a round of cocktails before moving on to wine. Half of them had spilled before they ever reached our table, thus rendering them half-full. The server said she would either get us new ones or she wouldn't charge us for the half-full drinks. I thought that was a nice gesture. For appetizers we shared the calamari, seared tuna, and Johnny cakes. The calamari was good, but I was expecting better since we were in the middle of seafood ground zero. The Johnny cake was pretty bland. Others put maple syrup on it to perk it up, but if I wanted to eat pancakes at dinner, I would have ordered them. The tuna was the best of the appetizers. It was lightly seared and coated with sesame seeds and served with a seaweed salad. It was quite tasty and I wished we'd ordered two of those instead of the calamari. We ordered a bottle of Rodney Strong merlot. My boyfriend's mom's friend is a vintner, so we happily let him take the reins on making a selection. Boyfriend's mom doesn't really enjoy wine, so instead she ordered another cocktail. At that point we also ordered our entrees. Two of us ordered filet mignon medium rare, another ordered sea scallops, and another ordered a ribeye, medium rare. A long time passed and we still hadn't received our wine or cocktail. By then, our food arrived. I cut into my filet and it was cooked well past medium rare. It wasn't egregious, but it was overcooked. I was just going to eat it anyway so as not to make a fuss, but my boyfriend insisted I send it back. The server came back with the wine and we told her about the steak, so she let me sample the wine to make sure it was ok. That was kind of weird - it was like she was trying to make up for the fact that they overcooked my steak so I got the first taste of wine. Mom still hadn't gotten her second cocktail so we asked about that. The server apologized and went to get it. By the time she came with the cocktail, my boyfriend had cut into his ribeye which was also horribly overcooked. He sent that back. Keep in mind that it's now two steaks that had to be sent back. My replacement steak arrived and this one was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately by then, mom and her friend were almost done with their entrees and my boyfriend was now waiting for his new steak to be cooked. His new one was brought to the table and unbelievably, it was more overcooked than the first one he sent back. Ridiculous. The server apologized and was embarrassed. We felt bad for her. We asked to see a manager. The manager came over and we showed her the steak and asked her if she thought it looked medium rare. She said "Half of it looks medium rare." As if cooking half the steak properly was acceptable. We told her this was the second time this happened and that we'd also sent my steak back. All we wanted was for our steaks to be cooked properly. We're not difficult people, I swear. At last, the third time was the charm. To be fair, the other filet mignon and scallops were delicious and cooked properly. Dessert would hopefully fare better so we ordered four different things and would share: a nectarine fruit crisp, chocolate semifreddo, chocolate souffle, and Indian pudding. The Indian pudding didn't do anything for me, but everyone else enjoyed it. Since I was the one that ordered the chocolate souffle, I was the most disappointed. It was more like a slice of flourless chocolate cake. Nothing "souffle" about it. It wasn't even warm. The icing on the cake came when we were pouring the last of the wine. We realized we'd been drinking Robert Mondavi, not Rodney Strong. While the wine was fine, even a wine novice such as I knows that Mondavi is cheaper than Rodney Strong. I was curious which wine we'd be charged for - the one we got or the one we ordered. Naturally, we were charged the more expensive one. The server fixed it and also comped the ribeye (as they should). Hopefully next time will be better. 2.5 stars. read more

We went for my parents 40th wedding anniversary. My husband and I drove out from NY and my 83 year old grandmother went through great pains to plan a nice dinner, she lives in the area. She, my grandmother tried to "secretly" order a dessert in advance and the waitress announced this quite loudly to my parents as we walked in the restaurant. The ambiance was nice, the food was decent, although there were no vegetarian entrees on the menu. The service was lacking and questionable, my husband's clam chowder came out after we had all finished our appetizers, we asked for refills on our soda, which took approximately 20 minutes to come, of course they came out after the entrees were finished. The dessert was the greatest fiasco of the night, after multiple conversations and requests, the server still called my grandma aside to confer with her, and when it came 30 minutes after the entrees were cleared, there were not plates nor silverware to eat it with. My parents were so tired and annoyed by this point, they took the dessert to go, a $300 dinner which left a bad taste in our mouth service wise... This is a review for the restaurant: eaten here twice in the last month. People in previous reviews don't seem happy but we've had nice experiences both times. The inn is updated and modern but still has its charm. The service both at the front desk and from the wait staff is very good. The wait staff very friendly and attentive without being annoying. Good bar selection for cocktails. Salads are fresh and good appetizer sizes. Our table had the chicken, salmon and gnocchi entrees. All were delicious and we would order them again. My wife and I have been here for Thanksgiving dinner over the past 4 years now. We book ourselves a room for a couple days and have a wonderful, relaxing time. The meals here are very, very good. However the fun is really in the bar. The bartender, Tom has been with the Inn for more than 20 years. He's a great personality and makes one marvelous Manhattan. There is dining in the bar in a very comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. The dining rooms are large and very warm and inviting. The menu is varied with something for everyone. My family had Mother's Day lunch here. The grounds are beautiful and the service was outstanding. It was a fixed menu but had enough variety to satisfy anyone's taste. Soups: RI Clam Chowder Chilled Asparagus and Leek I had the asapragus and leek. It was fantastic. It would have also worked well warm but it was light and refreshing chilled. I tried some of the chowder. It was also very good. Im more of a fan of Cream over Clear chowder but this was awesome. Full of tasty bits too. Salad: Only one type of salad was offered. Spring greens topped with green apple slices, blue cheese, walnuts and I cant remember the dressing (but i wish i could...it was so good. i remember it being pink). I have a nut allergy so they made one sans walnuts. Main Course: Lamb + Mashed Potatos with mixed veg Filet+ Mashed Potatos with mixed veg Sword Fish with salsa, lump blue crab cous cous and mixed veg Grilled Chicken with...ummm...something and mixed veg I went with the sword fish (mainly to try the cous cous). The salsa was basic but good. The fish was just a tad bit over cooked which made it a little dry. The spring vegetables was an assortment of squash i had never heard of, baby carrots and pea pods. The squash were KILLER! Ok. The cous cous? So good! There was a slight citrus tartness to it that went incredibly well witht he lump crab flavor. I could have eaten a whole bowl of just that. Deserts: Ummm. There were a lot. I had the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream. Once again...they nailed it. Perfect mixture of sweet and tart and im not an ice cream person but their vanilla ice cream was some of the best ive ever had. The grounds were gorgeous and the building itself is beautiful. Excellent restaurant, great food and service. We usually go a couple of times a summer when we want a really nice meal. Great seafood selection and excellent use of fresh local seafood, cooked to perfection. The menu has entrees and then a lighter fare, which is often times smaller portions of many of the same items on the regular menu. This is a beautiful place to stay so don't get me wrong, but I would caution heading out to this venue for looking for a great meal. My mixed field was mediocre, but when the entree is disappointing, its tough to want to go back. The seared scallops were more stewed than seared...just too much liquid, and no texture. The seafood puff pastry was mostly bland and the shrimp came tail on which was somewhat tacky. To finish on a high note, the wine selection is outstanding for a reasonable price. read more

We are here after church on Easter. We are the only table besides a party of 12. Their menu is limited to eggs or pancakes. We have watched the server bring out one plate every 5 minutes. Still waiting for our food 45 min later. Do not come here if you're hungry or if you want your food served at the same time as the other people in your party. This was the worst breakfast ever. Apparently whoever is cooking can only make one breakfast at a time. And our order is wrong. We asked for scrambled eggs with cheese-- no cheese. Bacon is overdone. Eggs are cold. How can you screw up breakfast? We will not be coming back here. read more

So I went here for Easter breakfast with my family(party of 12). We walked in and the entire place was empty, really quiet and awkward (should be busy and full of life). I'm pretty sure the woman that waited on us was the house keeper, and I felt bad for her because I could tell she had know Idea what she was doing. Very limited menu of silver dollar pancakes or eggs and a meat. Service was pretty much non existent couldnt get our water or coffee refilled for long periods of time. So we ordered and sat there for a very long time before they began to bring one plate at a time out in about 5 min intervals(with very small portions). She had know idea who order what and the orders were almost all wrong(which is hard to believe with a limited menu and being the ONLY PEOPLE THERE!). By the time the last person received their food everyone else had finished. I felt like I was hysterical how is this place still even in business? So then we finished and began to wait for our check.... We waited.... And waited... Nothing. At this point I saw our waitress walk upstairs (most likely because she is a housekeeper cleaning). So I asked the busser to have here get our check. So we wait.... After a while I got back to talk to them all we needed was one check no need to split it or anything complicated. I see the owner's "wife" with the "waitress" showing her how to make the bill. Anyways 5 min later we get the bill and it was over 200 for the most lackluster breakfast I have ever had we would have gotten better service at a fricken McDonald's. It really is a shame that an establishment that built up such a good reputation over the years has turned into this. Very poor Management, do yourself a very and bring your business elsewhere. read more

Did thanksgiving here with the family this year. The menu gave a choice of two soups (lobster bisque or corn chowder), an apple/bluecheese/walnut salad, entree choice (tenderloin, turkey, or salmon), and dessert choice (indian pudding, apple cranberry crisp, chocolate cream parfait, pecan pumpkin pie, lemon sorbet). We had the room on the porch. The heater was turned on and off for us by request. The view wasn't as nice as I was expecting (we got a croquet court and kiddy playground). It was really busy...our waiter Larry did a decent enough job considering. At one point he forgot my uncles salad and the water glasses remained empty a smidgen too long but nothing really note worthy. The food was excellent. The soup was AWESOME (corn chowder) and the salad was good too. I chose the turkey and while it was well cooked it wasn't anything too special...the cornbread stuffing and mashed potato was great though. I had the pecan pumpkin pie....what a let down. It was a decent slice of pie but nowhere were there any sign of pecans. There was glob of melted whipped cream. A good scoop of french vanilla ice cream. Then there were like 5 toasted pumpkin seeds shaken in pumpkin pie spice or something that were more like hard shrapnel in the nice creaminess the dessert had going for it. A decent time...and good food...not sure if it was worth $40 a person though. read more

My family and I stayed at the Shelter Harbor Inn this past weekend, 5/18/13. This is the worst Inn/Motel that I have ever stayed in. I would have given this place no stars, but it makes you give it a rating. When booking our room the person told me that we would be staying in the barn. We checked in and brought our things to our room to find that there was a wedding party staying in the barn as well. They had coolers of booze lined up the hall. The Inn never told us this when booking our room. Nothing was said about a wedding party being in the same building, and I made sure to mention that I have 2 small children. As you can imagine they wedding party was loud and kept my family and I up ALL night. We called the desk several times to complain and nothing was done to quiet the noise. I DO NOT recommend this Inn to ANYONE with small children. The rooms are tiny, the walls are paper thin and you can hear EVERYTHING!! And the staff leaves much to be desired. Every member of the staff that we dealt with was rude. And when I checked out the person at the desk asked me how my night was. I told her exactly what happened and her response was "oh we should have told you that when you booked your room." Yeah thanks for that was mine. read more
