It will be impossible for me to share my gratitude to Brad Shelton, but I will try my best. I was in need of an experienced roofer to rebuild a beach house roof that had been neglected for many many years. In choosing my roofer I was specifically interested in professionalism, quality of work, and excellent communication. It was easy to determine who seemed the best with their initial bids based on the above criterion, but I went into this project with caution. I could not have been any happier and feel so fortunate I went with Brad Shelton. Everything that led up to the roof repair was smooth and timely with excellent communication. They were actually able to start the project a week early, which turned out to be a huge problem because we had a bizarre hail, lightning, thunderstorm in August after two days of dry rot removal. Brad went out to my house the next morning, on a Sunday, to inspect the house and sent tons of photos for my assurance. Fortunately, everything was ok. The project continued and we uncovered tons of dry rot and structural issues. This is where I was so glad I was selective in picking the most professional team. Brad was absolutely amazing. As per my request initially, he sent daily updates with tons of photos and videos explaining the work needed. Obviously, this required change orders, and initially this was my biggest fear. Brad was incredibly professional and honest, I felt so comfortable with everything. He called me daily to make sure we were on the same page. I feel like he took this project personally and truly wanted me to feel satisfied with the work. Many years ago I had worked with a different roofing company and this experience was a thousand times better. In summary, Brad Shelton is the only and the best roofer to use in Santa Cruz. I wish him all the best and remain totally satisfied with his work.

    Hmm. Think that's enough caulk?

I found Shelton Roofing to be unprofessional, extremely unreliable, uncommunicative, and dishonest. They also seem to have neither the time nor the know-how to repair a roof correctly. I have a 30-ish year old metal roof that needs repair. I signed a contract with Shelton Roofing in August to paint the roof and do repairs: remove/replace/seal fasteners, and apply liquid flashing to any gaps and seams. Initially after the contract was signed, I had a hard time connecting with anyone about questions I had abut my project. I would call and leave messages for Brad (the owner) or Mario (the project manager). I had painting work scheduled on the exterior of the house, and I needed more information about the coating they were going to use on the metal roof. My calls and emails were never returned by either of them. Brad sent me an email with a link to the info about the coating at the end of September (the 20th). We locked in the material a few weeks later. Once scheduled, my job was "bumped" a few times. The receptionist would call to tell me my job was being rescheduled for various reasons. One time she explained that repairs are not given the same priority that re-roof jobs are; she said they work repair jobs around re-roofs. Ok, I get that. Then, she called to say a job they were already on took longer than they anticipated. Bump. By the end of October, bad weather/rain started. Bump. Brad emailed me October 28th saying, "sorry, it's too late in the season now to apply the coating." He did, however, promise "screw in and seal all of the screws." I replied, saying I was fine with the coating being done later (in the summer or whatever), but would like all the other repairs outlined in the contract to be done. He never wrote back. Another bad feeling. The 3rd week of November, I got a call from the receptionist, that the guys are "on the way now to get you watertight for winter." Great! Well, would you believe nobody showed up!?! NOBODY SHOWED UP!!! I called the next week and told the receptionist nobody had ever come the day she said they were "on the way now" (I had been away the day they were supposed to come but saw on the Ring camera nobody had come, and I saw the roof was not repaired). I was incredulous. I just couldn't believe it. She said "well, I don't know what happened, but I'm sending someone up there now." At this point, I was so uneasy, I thought I'd better go up there and make sure. When I got there, I could not believe my eyes. A man was on the ROOF OF OUR GUEST HOUSE (not the roof we had contracted work on, AT ALL) just globbing caulk on every fastener. Even if he had been on the correct roof... fasteners were not being tightened, replaced, sealed correctly, and no other repairs were being made. But he was on the WRONG ROOF. Can you imagine if he had been on a neighbor's roof?? Ugh! He got Mario, the foreman, on the phone. I told him the worker was on the wrong roof, glopping ridiculous amounts of caulk on the fasteners, and not doing the repairs correctly. Mario apologized for the mix up and all the delays. He said they had been short staffed. He then said, "Listen, I will come there Monday, I will bring a copy of the contract, and we will go over the repairs together and I will oversee the work myself." I told him that would make me a lot more comfortable, and agreed to meet him Monday. Well... Monday, as I am getting in the car to meet him, he calls. He said he and Brad looked at pictures of what the worker had done (see below, I could have done better myself) and they felt that was all they intended to do to get me "watertight for winter" and they would do the actual repairs "later." He said that if I was not okay with that, I could cancel my contract. I asked if they would be returning my $1000 deposit, and he said "yes." By this time, I did not trust them at all. I did not trust I would not be bumped into infinity, I did not trust they would do a good job, I did not trust them to communicate well. I Just wanted to end things at this point, and canceled the contract. If you've read this far (lol) I am sure you would not be surprised to learn they never returned our deposit, and have ignored all requests for it. I was so surprised by this experience. I thought Shelton Roofing had a good reputation. This experience was a nightmare. There are a lot of good roofing companies in Santa Cruz. This one isn't it. Keep looking.

About 2 months after we moved in, following a large storm, we started to see paint bubbles appear on our walls in our main house and ADU. We were immediately concerned and we began to talk to roofers. Jordan at Apollo Roofing was among 7 roofers we interviewed for the job, and he was by far the best, and it wasn't particularly close. One roofer came by, got on top of the roof, came down, went back to his office and had his colleague quote me for an amount that made me want to sell the house. Another roofer came and didn't even bother knock on my front door and just decided to climb on top of the roof to inspect without telling us he was even here. Another came, inspected the roof with a drone and left without showing me what he saw. The last roofer didn't even bother coming by and just took satellite pictures of the roof and told me I need a reroof. Jordan was different. He came by and first examined the damages on our walls. He then climbed on top of the roof and found all areas that he suspected where the leaks were occurring. And then he educated me on the various techniques to reroof a house and what my options are (TPU, modified bitumen torch down, or overlay) and gave me his recommendations. After he left, not only did I feel like I was more educated about the roofing process which I was a complete novice in, he also gave me confidence that he was the right man for the job. The only thing that remained was the quotation. After he gave me a quote, he walked me through the scope of work line item by line item until I was left completely satisfied with the price and scope of the project. Never once did I think he was trying to sell me fixes that I didn't need or was trying to take advantage of a roofing newb. He gave me the time and space to validate his advice with others in the business all of which were completely confirmed. We signed the contract shortly thereafter. It took a while for the project to commence given the persistent rain. However, when I requested a particular deadline to start the work, he got his team together and found a 3 day window where there was no rain in the horizon and got to work immediately. More importantly, I had set a deadline of mid-March to complete the reroof because I had planned a surprise engagement proposal for my significant other the weekend after. Jordan's team wasted no time and finished the job in exactly 3 days. We are extremely grateful for Jordan and his team, and the Apollo Roofing Company in general. We don't expect to need their service again soon because they did such a phenomenal job, but we wholeheartedly would recommend them to others.
