A very typical Chinese bakery, not Martha Stewart. The bakery is well- lit, the selection is limited. The price is a little on the high side if you compare them to SF Chinatown. The sun cookie was fine and the taro flower cake was interesting. Very unexpected and I found myself devouring it in seconds. The phyllo dough was wrapped to resemble a beautiful flower. Unlike American desserts, Asian desserts are very mildly sweetened. If you are making a trip, visit one of the bakeries in SF Chinatown. The young workers in this foster city store have serious attitude issues. On Today 1:10pm 8/16/18, there are 3 young kids working at the cashier. The young lady at the cashier gave us the wrong cake and we pointed it out. Her look and attitude is totally like my fault to gave her extra work. She handed the cake to another young tall boy. I gotta learn that you can't ask certain people for their opinion. I had never been in there before and wanted to get some cakes as a thank-you for AK's parents. I asked which one was better, the mocha or T-chocolate sponge cake roll. She answered, "Depends on what you like better." Okaaaaay. Then she said the mocha was more popular. Of course! That's how I should phrase it, since the Chinese community is one huge popularity contest anyway (Smarter children, better schools, more degrees, more grandchildren, cuter grandchildren, bigger Rolexes, shinier cars, etc. You get the picture.). I'm a sucker for anything sweet. Already full from lunch but you know, the tummy stores sweets/dessert in a 'different compartment' so I was in this store before my car keys were even out of my purse. They do a pretty good job of selling desserts with your eyeballs. I picked up a mocha roll, a half mocha/vanilla wedge, and much to my surprise, a pineapple cake single packaged in the cutest little yellow box (they also sell packages of 8, but I wasn't trying to go there). One bite through the delicate crust and deliciously light pineapple gel middle and I instantly had a Ratatouille moment (no, not turning into a rat!), sending me back to when I first experienced these little cakes in Taiwan while visiting my cousin. I was amazed at how close they were to the ones I experienced back in Taiwan and all the happy memories I had during that visit.. and it almost made me want to cry. Too bad these suckers are only about 2 inches square but it was definitely worth the trip down memory lane. The mocha was alright. Tasted a bit like maybe green tea was mixed in as well? So sad - we have been coming to this place for as long as I can remember. We love the quality of the baked breads and the delicious breakfast items. Today was one of those horrible experiences that makes you not want to come back. I walked in and it was very quite - one other person in the store. We both walked up at the same time to the cashier (I wanted to see if they had more of one in the back but had my tray in hand) the man behind the counter rings her up and in the mean time a older Asian man walks in, grabs a paper and a bun and proceeds to walk up to the counter - on the other side of the line - and stood there with his wallet in his hand. After the girl in front of me was done I stepped up to the counter (in front of the register) and the man behind the counter turns and helps the man. Ignoring the fact I've been in line before that guy even walked in the store! It was SP rude and I was furious - whatever let it go. So I asked for a ham and cheese croissant. He went to the back and brought one out and I asked "do you have more?" And he says "yes three more" "perfect I'll take all four" in the meantime insay "I'm Going to grab a few more" and the new lady behind me with one sandwich steps up. In the seconds I was gone grabbing another bun HE SOLD ONE OF MY HAM AND CHEESES TO HER! They were talking in a language I didn't speak and it was clear he was willing to sell her my breakfast buns. I like Sheng Kee's pastries, but, they have to work on their customer service skills! Their customer service is always not so good. So I usually avoid dealing with them by buying the same things in a grab-n-go manner. But last Sat, I got a really bad one. I wanted to try something new and needed to have some information on some pastries. But a young man with glasses looked super bothered by me, asking questions, and he had an annoyed expression, talked like a teenager, bothered by his mother. On top of it, his answer was not helpful at all. He was just repeating the ingredients that were already shown on the pastry tags. (FYI, he has no accent, speaking in English. So that's not a language issue but the personality issue.) He shouldn't be there if he doesn't like helping customers. This kind of experience leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Chestnut mousse cake was a big hit for my daughter-in-law's birthday. A friend gave me chestnuts bought from Costco to put around the cake. I love how there's still a sheng kee near me after I moved from Fremont! Sheng kee has always been my favorite bakery! Especially I'm in love with their pineapple coconut buns. This place not only has them, they have it in abundance! Yay! Usually they always run out when I visit the other stores around the south bay/east bay, but super happy this one is near me! There are a lot of Asian bakeries out there, but I usually go to Sheng Kee. I love their Taiwanese style pastries. My favorites are the pineapple custard bun, green tea mochi danish, cocktail bun, egg tart, and cheese puff cake. The green tea mochi danish is pretty unique. It is puff pastry filled with a layer of green tea spread and a layer of soft chewy mochi. It's perfect for any matcha lovers out there. Some other popular options that my family enjoys are the brioche, marble taro, and tiger roll cakes. If you're not planning to eat your pastries right away (or if they're not freshly baked when you buy them), go home and stick them in the toaster oven for a few minutes. It seriously makes all the difference! Every few months, they raise the price of each bread by about 10-15 cents. Right now each bread is around $1.75-$2.50, which is still fairly cheap, especially if you compare that to American or French bakeries. Service is usually not great, but it doesn't bother me - I just get my bread and go. They have boba, but the low price is really its only selling point. They use flavored syrup, and the tea tastes very watered down. I'd go to the 2 other tea places in Marina Plaza for boba. read more

I've gotten breads from this place for a long time and they've always been fresh and delicious. But, I feel compelled to share a recent experience I had. I was eating one of their breads and I bit into a METAL SCREW. That's pretty bad and careless. Someone could have been seriously hurt by this. the only place that i've been able to find pineapple moon cakes. these little delights are filled with a chewy pineapple filling in a thin pastry shell. they are a little expensive for the size ($1.75 each), but i always pick up a bunch when in the area. they have lotus and red bean flavors in the mini moon cakes too, but pineapple is my favorite. i haven't really tried any of the other pastries. parking is fairly easy in the shopping center parking lot. sheng kee is located in the middle of the plaza next to the korean tofu place. read more

I used to absolutely love the Onion Hot Dog Buns and the Cheese Hot Dog Buns - they are made of Turkey Dogs. My son loves their chocolate walnut and sesame seed cookies and we binge once in a while on the assorted moon cakes and custard tarts. In the past, we used to get my son's B'day cake from here 2-3 years -- it was a light airy sponge cake filled with fresh fruits....not spectacular but decent. I went in at 12.30 PM today with my son to select and order his cake. The lady saw that I was ready to order but serviced 2 other customers behind me (chatting at length with them in chinese)...when it was my turn, she was catty and abrupt and told me I had to pay for the cake in full (which I did not mind doing but her attitude reeked). Given my 15 minutes of pointless waiting, I decided to take my business elsewhere....seriously the Hot Dog buns at Ranch 99 give sheng kee a run for their money...and they are a whole lot nicer...in the process I discovered a bakery which is charging me 50% lesser than Sheng Kee and I am able to get my son his beloved Dinosaur Cake....keep your mind and options open.... Sheng Kee is similar to SoGo Bakery in that they both serve the Chinese style pastries, cakes, custards and the like. The breakfast buns (pineapple, red bean and taro) are decent and inexpensive. They are nothing fancy and at least are made fresh daily and they sell day old buns for a lower price too. They also have whole cakes for order and the turnaround time is only one day. Or you can just pick one that's already made and sitting in the glass display window, but it probably won't be as good as freshly made ones. The pre-made whole cakes selection at the display window is not a lot, but you can get their printed brochure to look at the kinds of cakes they offer. I tasted the chocolate chiffon cake by slice and the vanilla and strawberry sponge cake "widget". They were airy and light in texture but the flavor did not wow me. The egg custards and pineapple pancakes are decent too. I definitely have tasted better pineapple bus, pancakes or egg custards in bakeries in Taiwan. Given the limited choices we have here, I am just happy there is one near where I live. But it's not something I would go out of my way to get either. read more

Ordered 3 mini cakes, as the gentleman behind the counter put them in a plastic container he dropped some fruit topping off of one of the mini cakes, he did not attempt to put it back on or give me a new piece, and I was standing there watching him. Really?? I also ordered a vanilla sponge cake and a butterfly. Butterfly was really good, however sponge cake was just okay, and all 3 of the mini cakes were stale and the frosting was hard. I am torn about this place. I like their breads and stuff, and it's authenticly Chinese which is always yummy... But, for Chinese New Year I bought some rice cakes from them and at $7 a cake, you'd think they are to die for and much better than the ones from Ranch 99... But, the consistency was ALL wrong. It was gooey to the point that I could not cut it or fry it appropriately. Also, one of them had a small piece of mold on the surface. I was at a friend's house and TOTALLY embarassed about that! Now the box says to refrigerate, but when you buy it, it is just sitting out on the tables... I refrigerated immediately when I got them home and their expiration dates were way later (March sometimes). It was very disappointing for a good bakery to have something like that happening. This is a review by a vegetarian. This is a not a super fancy pastry or cake place. I wouldn't come for a sweets fix. But the red bean buns are good and the Portuguese custards will fill your fat quotient for the day. Prices are damn reasonable. A large french baguette is still $1.49. Was there to order&pay for my GodSons Transformer BDay Cake. Picked up Saturday and was very disappointed the cake looked nothing like the cake advertised in their book. On top of my bad experience was another person complaining about the very same thing with their sons BDay cake order.
