First tried Sheng Jee in Cupertino when I lived over there - that location is bigger but now I live in San Mateonand I'm happy have even this small Sheng Kee near me - gimme all the Portuguese egg tarts, pineapple buns, sliced raisin bread, and at least one new thing I've never tried before. Maybe it's a COVID thing or ? But all of the pastries are now wrapped in plastic before you even choose them - I wish they would not do that, maybe put into a cardboard box - ah well. We have been going to this restaurant for a long time but only for the custard small pies. Yesterday we were hungry and decided to try many of the items. They were absolutely delicious and for 2 persons we spent $21.00 and still had a roll for later. We started with the chicken pie with flaky crust, moist, flavorful and a great start to our meal. Next we had the roll that had minced sweet pork on top which was light, tasty and hit the spot, maybe our favorite. Next came the roll with spring onions and some delightful sauce that was as good as the previous choices. Finally we ended our lunch with the Portuguese custard small pie. Outstanding, freshly prepared, rolls were a little sweet and very soft, and tender. The service and attitudes was friendly, quick, and efficient. Outstanding we will be back, and next time were will be taking some home for later. read more

This is my favorite childhood bakery, Chinese pastries that have a sweet filling and slightly chewy bread hold a place near and dear to my heart. My parents only let me eat half of these every morning for breakfast, and I see why. These are very sugary! I prefer their sweeter pastries (e.g the custard pastry and coconut cream pastry) to their more savory ones (e.g pork floss/rousong and ham & cheese), but each to their own. I also always get my birthday cakes from Sheng Kee, specifically the mango mousse. It's the right texture for a cake: very spongy, not too dense, and not too airy. They also do custom catering orders for half sheet/sheet cakes. Try a slice next time you are there and see for yourself! I will raise a few complaints but these are not atypical of a mom-and-pop or local chain- the system isn't ran that well, there were two groups ahead of us that were struggling to get their pre-ordered cake out. The employees kept showing him different cakes and opening their containers to see if it was their order or not. This subsequently held up the entire line waiting to get their pastries, which can build up really quickly on a Sunday morning. I think the quality control and uniformity is quite good for a locally ran chain of this size! Their cookies are a bit of a let-down, though. I got their chocolate white marshmallow one and I commend them for not letting the marshmallows melt in the batter or protrude/not incorporate properly (something I struggle with as a home baker), but the chocolate was way too bitter and it was really dry despite also being packaged in a plastic bag similar to the rest of the pastries at this shop. They also only accept credit card if you order above $10 worth of items, which you can easily hit if you come with family or friends but can easily lead you to feel guilty if you are eating by yourself... haha! This store have less selections than the other Sheng Kee Bakery stores. I was looking for the Chocolate Cream Bun but was told that they never have that. Other stores do have it. I do want to say that the lady cashier is not friendly at all. She wears a face mask so we don't know how she looks like. She just stares at you. I would give more stars for my review if she was nicer. Could pay with a credit card for $10 or more in purchase. We like their plain HK Pineapple Bun $2.09 each. It has a good chew to it and not dry. The Red Bean Bun $2.19 each is good but the bread itself is very thin. It does have a good amount of red bean filling. Walnut Cookie is good and not too sweet which we like. Mochi Pastry with green tea is good and not sweet but the green tea has a bit of a floral taste. It is self serve so grab a tray and start loading which pastry/bun you want. I went around 2:30pm and there were still a good selection available. I ordered: - 1 pineapple red bean: 4/5 - red bean was good and pasty - 1 pineapple custard: 3/5 - custard was okay, nothing special could've skipped on this one - 1 pineapple taro: 2/5 - might've been spoiled because the taro tasted a bit sour, ended up tossing it - 1 purple romance (taro): 4/5 - this taro bun was much better then the pineapple taro, tasted fresh The four buns came out to $10.19 - not overly priced. The only downside was most of the buns were flattened on the top because they were pretty much tossed in/stacked. read more

I had a much better experience here on my second visit. I was able to come by on a Friday at about 5pm. There was only a few customers, and I was able to walk around & see everything. Also, the clerk was much more friendly and outgoing. I was able to get some egg custard tarts, mini cheese cakes, curry beef turnover, and chocolate cream roll cake. So, I'm raising my score to 4-stars. It's still a small bakery as compared to locations like Union City and Milpitas. read more

I stumbled upon this place after checking out the Marina Market during my visit to San Mateo, and I'm glad that I did. Of the pastries that I tried, they were quite good. I can't comment on the service cause it's a self-serve place, and I also didn't have any questions for the workers. Plenty of parking available, which was a plus for me. Pastries: Pineapple Danish ($2.15): 5/5 Basically the same as a bolo bao/pineapple bun, but I much preferred this version because Danish pastries use laminated dough so you get all the fluffy layers in the dough. Purple Romance ($2.99): 5/5 I'm not a big fan of taro, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this pastry. The taro paste was rich, soft, and smooth. The dough part wasn't dry either. Pork Sung Puff ($2.99): 2/5 This was a letdown for me. It was so bloody dry! Both the filling and the dough were dry. There was only a thin layer of puff pastry; the rest of the dough was regular bread dough. After popping it in the microwave for ~7 seconds, I was able to somewhat enjoy it. Would not get it again. Lava Taro Puff ($3.85): 5/5 Again, not a big taro fan, but I'm a sucker for egg lava pastries/buns (wished they had liu sha baos here), so I was excited to try this. The taro paste was rich and soft like the one in purple romance. I was afraid the yolk part was going to be egg custard. But it was indeed lava-like, albeit a tad bit too thick in consistency. It even tasted better after microwaving for 3 seconds. I loved the layers of the dough as well. This was my favorite pastry from here; however, it is overpriced, given how small it is. Green Bean Puff ($3.75): 3/5 The green bean paste tasted good, but it was pretty dry. Even after microwaving it, the filling was still a disappointment. Delicious selection of baked goods and pastries. Remember it's cash only if spending under $10. I like a lot of what they sell. Personally I'm a big fan of the triangle-shaped cakes in the fridge. I love the simple spongy cake texture (it's two lightly-flavored cakes with a bit of a frosting layer); delicious and a nostalgic bonus. An easy snack. My favorite has always been the mocha flavor though orange is a nice runner up. Their caramel puddings are tasty as well, as are the premade sandwiches, and pandan cupcakes. The cake rolls (swiss roll) are also a great treat. Love the mocha and the honey (which is filled with a lemon curd). Green tea mochi croissant and red bean mochi bread are great. Also like the pineapple taro bread, the tuna roll, and ham corn bread. Good sliced toast, wild pineapple cake, egg tart, and chicken pie. Radish and green onion pastries are also nice. When mooncake season comes around, they have all sorts of flavors and styles. It's the best. Tea flavors (like oolong) and lotus seed for the win~ read more

I grew up eating breads from Sheng Kee Bakery so it's no surprise that I'm now an adult (woo taxes!) and still frequent Sheng Kee when possible. Plenty of parking available in the plaza. If your car is lowered, be careful. Why Sheng Kee? Because they have the most variety of breads available, even a pineapple bun isn't just a pineapple bun here. They have like 3-4 different kinds for you to choose from. Prices? Pretty standard. I picked up 4 different items (one bread loaf) and paid about $9.50. Environment? It's a bakery. Now all the breads are packed individually and you're able to pick up and go straight to the cashier. In terms of social distancing? Not really much as restrictions are being lifted. Why 3 stars? Because while this was a taste of my childhood, I bought the custard raisin bread loaf and there's very few pieces of raisin and mostly just white bread. Not even custard, unless I reallllllly dig into the middle of the loaf. Not worth the $5.50. read more

I've found some decent sweet stuff for my afternoon tea. This place has a variety of choices and recently, I've new items added to the menu. 1) Caramel Custard (4-5 stars). You don't see I'm this one thick and firm commonly I've seen in some bakery places. 2) Matcha Pudding: (5 stars). New item and delicious. 3) Lava Taro Pudding: I've seen a very nice picture to show the cake but when I tasted it. It's not lava like the name. My boss' passionfruit cake was a melted hot mess. Who wants a soupy cake? for her birthday? definitely not my boss. I asked a co worker to pick up a cake the day before we were supposed to celebrate our boss' bday at a work potluck. Big mistake. We should've planned better and ordered somewhere else! When she picked up the cake, she said it appeared fine. However, the next day, the supporting plastic ring around the cake came off and the passionfruit filling leaked out of the sides and collected around the box making a hot mess. The cake still tasted good: sour-sweet with a fresh passion fruit taste to it and a soft texture reminiscent of a good Chinese cake. However, the visual presentation was just a big turn off. There are not too many Asian bakeries in the area. My son wanted a Chinese mango mousse cake for his birthday and I bought one from Sheng Kee Bakery. I called two days in advance to place the order. When I picked it up, the cake was very cold, like it was just defrosted. When we tasted it, it tasted like something that was made awhile ago, frozen for weeks, and then defrosted for sale. If I did not want a freshly baked cake, I could have just bought a cake from the frozen section of a grocery store. There are other miscellaneous pastry items that are individually wrapped, but I have no idea how long they have been there, so did not venture to try more. I rarely go to this Sheng Kee because I love the one near Union City/Fremont since it's a lot bigger. However, I came here to buy a cake for my bf's grandma's bday. I chose the strawberry cake and I must say, it definitely didn't disappoint. The cake was aesthetically pretty and tasted as good as it looked. I really love the whipped cream on Asian cakes because it's so light and it's not as sweet. I would definitely go to Sheng Kee for cakes from now on. I also love their egg tarts. Picked up a birthday cake from here today and was very happy with the experience. They have some delicious looking cakes ranging from around $20-30, some in cute shapes like bears, and most in standard cake shapes. The cakes were beautifully decorated. We were tempted by the mango mousse but decided to go with the matcha green tea and red bean mousse cake ($28) instead since it was more unique. They were nice to give a happy birthday sign for free as well. The cake itself was fluffy and light and not too sweet, but also not too bitter from too much matcha. I wish there were a bit more red bean inside (it was mostly cake and matcha mousse), but it tasted very good. Then we finished the fruit in the cake at 9pm. So the strawberries should not be spoiled if we eat it in the same day, right? Seems like if you pick up a cake, it should last at least for that day.
