Well I am going against the grain with a 3 Star rating (vs the overwhelming 4 avg). So why? Pretty much inconsistent customer service. Been here 3 times in last week as I am from way out of town so this is based on my experiences. Review: Food -- good full menu step up from bar food. For the area it is a broad selection of specials, main dishes, Mexican and apps. Prices about avg for area. Environment- nice local atmosphere, buzz on a Friday night as they are a busy spot. Service - had good table service From friendly waitress. Bar - totally different experience. One time it was always waving at bar tender to get her attention. Next time, weird set up where bartender waited on couple sitting next to me very attentive - but avoided me like the plague, assuming I was in the other gal bartenders "section". Weird for her to not ask when my beer was empty etc. The other bartender Samantha who must of had my chair was in definite "wave down" mode. For my first beer, my menu, second beer etc. If the managers read this they may want to instruct your staff to separate bar sections by side of bar vs stool - more efficient for wait staff and more customer service for us and also coach the bar staff that everyone is a customer, even if they are not sitting in the correct stool at the bar!! read more

Cheese sticks and salads are good, but the menu is so condensed from before. Mostly bar food, snacks, not a place I'd recommend for dinner. I believe some nights they have dinner specials. I've been to their Mother's Day brunch in the past that was good, but very overpriced. on a Saturday afternoon I couldn't get the amazing broiled chicken or mashed potatoes so that was a bummer. I'm not sure I'll go out of my way to return to this place. Alma and Mount Pleasant have plenty of similar choices. read more

We stopped in on a back roads trip home to the U.P. When I found it on Yelp. Very cute, very clean, nice decor. Nice beer selection with something for everyone. I had the maple bacon cheeseburger and it was amazing. Just enough char on the angus burger and toasted bun. Yum. My hubby had the steak hoagie which he said was probably the best he had ever had. We both had the house chips..so good! The staff was super friendly. (One sweet gal came in partway through our visit and had a crazy amount of perfume on which prompted us to eat quicker but she was so sweet we didn't let it affect our score.) After looking for a caterer for our wedding 4 years ago and finding not one we liked... we went to this place for lunch and loved the food. The owner happened to be there and we booked him on the spot to come and cater where our reception was to be at. The food was the best wedding food you could get, pulled pork smoked for hours, fresh and hot marinated chicken, and homemade mac and cheese with more then one type of cheese mind you. We held the event at the local country club and STILL have people remind us of the food 4 years ago. I highly recommend this place for any event. And just a warning, the owner told us he competes at BB Q contests. Even has different sauces for his smoked pulled pork. read more

I had a couple bad experiences here, some of the staff are nice, others are not. I don't think bringing me a beer they know is his ex's brand is professional at all, and the owner should have really apologized to me for something he said. Otherwise the food is hit and miss, catered breakfasts are good, attended a fundraiser here and the salmon appeared to have come out of a bag, no grill marks and cold. The service was good, but the food was awful. We went on Sunday and we're looking for a place to have breakfast. When we went in before we had even sat down we're asked what we wanted to drink then told to go ahead to the brunch bar. Didn't know there was one, but decided to try. Came on Saturday night with a reservation for six. Waitress was very friendly and did a great job. Very good cocktail and beer selections. Overall prices were a very good value. No real complaints, other than my perch were more soggy than fried/crispy. I think they just took them out too soon to time it with our other dishes. A great small town restaurant and bar with really good food and friendly staff. My first visit was on a Friday night. It was busy but the staff, including our waitress Sara, were on their game and made it a really pleasant dining experience. Wife and I had the cod dinner and golden shrimp dinner while the kids had chicken tenders. Everyone really enjoyed their meals and it was reasonably priced, totaling $40 for our family of four, including two adult beverages. Surprisingly good. I headed over here on a Friday around 6:00 p.m. for the sole purpose of having a locally-produced beer that happens to be on tap here. I hadn't ever been to the place, and frankly, I wasn't expecting very much. Shepherd is a tiny town, largely agriculturally focused, and so I was expecting to be in a small-town, dingy bar, filled with rednecks and barely passable food. Boy was I wrong. While it does have a full bar, the place has a sizable restaurant side to it, and the whole place was very clean and tastefully decorated. It's not upscale by any means, but it has a great "homey" and welcoming feel to the place. Plus, I was surprised at the crowd - and it was very large crowd on this early Friday evening - was comprised of people of all ages and walks of life. This was clearly a community gathering spot, ranging from young kids to senior citizens. The huge crowd was also indicative of another thing... the food is fantastic. I went for the basic hamburger, but it's easily one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. It was a full 1/2 pound of meat, and and tasted like it was fresh off a backyard grill. Plus, it was tastefully arranged on my plate, and served with fantastic crisp-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside french fries (which lacked any sense of "greasy-ness"). My wife had a quesadilla plate, which she also complimented as being quite good, and it certainly looked appetizing on the plate. Besides the basic "pub grub," their menu indicated a fairly wide range of dishes, including some that I certainly wouldn't have expected to find in a small town (that night both frog's legs and cod loins were featured as specials. Seriously). My wife and I sat at the bar to eat (like I said... it was really busy that night), but the bartender was extremely pleasant, and looking around the room I saw plenty of smiling and apparently happy wait staff. These folks clearly seemed to want to make sure you had a nice time while you were in their establishment. To sum up: great food, great service, and in a clean family-friendly environment. It was not at all what I was expecting from a small town "bar." It's well worth a stop off the highway if you're traveling on US-127, or for the quick 7-minute trip down from Mt. Pleasant if you're staying up there. Kudos to Shepherd Bar & Restaurant... you've got quite the place. read more

I visit the Shepherd Bar every time I am in town. It has great and friendly service, a pretty good size menu and is a clean and fun restaurant/bar. It is Family friendly and you will always see every age from small children to senior citizens. Good selection of cold beer, wine & mixed drinks. I can't hardly get past ordering the broasted chicken as it is so delicious, but every thing that I have had on the menu has been hot, fresh & tasty. My boyfriend always gets the steak hoagie and he says it is one of the best sandwiches he has ever had. Fun place & casual atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable. I love it. read more

Just some thoughts for the owners... 1. Look at a different flooring option. The carpet Is old and shows everything. 2. Updated menu with some interesting trendy items. 3. Different serving plates. We ordered boneless wings and they came out on a plain plate w no garnish or anything. Even just a better more attractive way of serving them would be fine. 4. Our pizza was way under cooked and tasted like dough. Make sure the cheese is bubbling on top before serving. 5. Ambience is not the greatest when you walk in. We were there on a Sunday afternoon granted. However there should be some music playing in the background. 6. Break the tables up!!! It was setup for only large groups. My wife and I sat at a table that was 8 people. It makes you feel like you're in the wrong spot. 7. Place has great potential just needs some attention to the details. The 14 dollar sampler platter of heated up frozen food is the #1 example. #2 is the 25 dollar 4 topping pizza. If you want to try a pizza worth almost 30 bucks.. Travel to Lansing and go to Emil's. Lansing's #1 Italian restaurant like 45 years in a row. And there are about 60 down there in total. It's cooked on a wood fired oven and the dough is made from scratch not box mix. We love their Sunday brunch, so thought we'd try them for dinner after a basketball victory; fast, friendly service on a Saturday night. There menu was big enough to cover whatever you might be wanting. We tried the cherry chicken salad with the maple vinaigrette dressing...delicious; the maple bacon burger...a hit; the chili was a little too sweet and not spicy enough for my taste, but good; the wet burrito was a good size for the price, but not our favorite. We'll definitely be back to try out more of the menu when they have their maple beer on tap. read more

This place is a whole new world compared to the small town diner/dive bar it was when I last visited it about 15 years ago. First, it now takes up three full store fronts. Second, it has a WAY more "upscale" feel than it ever did. Don't get me wrong, it's still a small town bar/ restaurant, but they have put a LOT of time and money into "classing" it up. And the food is leagues better than I expected. We showed up for the Sunday Brunch Buffet (which is a hell of a bargain at only $8.99) just before they opened their doors at 10. The waitress was super friendly and let us in a few minutes early and got our drinks while they finished putting out the last of the buffet items. Once we got started, I was quite impressed with the lineup of goods. There was fried chicken, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade sausage, bacon, French toast sticks, Belgian waffles, macerated strawberries, biscuits, sausage gravy, vegetable strata, corn, mashed potatoes, Salisbury steak, bread pudding, and cinnamon rolls. There might have been more, but I think I got it all. It was all quite good, too. The sausage and gravy were clearly home made as was the bread pudding. The chef came out to make sure everything was going smoothly and you could literally see the pride on his face as he smiled over his work. That's when I spotted the likely reason for the extreme attention to detail: he was wearing a well loved hat from The Embers. For you young'ns, The Embers was Mt. Pleasant's long standing fine dining steak house that finally closed up shop several years ago. I asked if he had worked there and he said that he had for over 16 years and that both the vegetable strata and bread pudding recipes were of Embers origins. I gotta say that I was pretty impressed and had not expected that level of cooking expertise in Shepherd. Our server was a star also and was constantly on top of things. Then to make things just shine, I saw on their tap list that they have beers by Right Brain from Traverse City, and my favorite, Rochester Mills Milkshake Stout (so very, very, VERY good!). All in all, I'm pretty damned impressed to see what this place has become, especially in light of what it was. Kudos. read more
