I used to come here with my co-worker and another friend, we used to have a standing group date on the first Monday of each month, but those plans have since dissolved. It was an enjoyable diner for fun reasons but I was never all that crazy about the french fries with mozzarella cheese (which used to be my standard diner dish). The fries were different, not how diner fries should be according to me. They were really awesome with the bread baskets and appy items. The BEST thing at this place is the seafood stuffing. I mean it. I have literally ordered a side of just stuffing. The service is usually great and we rarely have to wait. You get a bread basket along with elbow salad and coleslaw just for sitting down which is pretty cool. The elbows could use a bit more flavor but no biggie. They also make their own vinagrette dressing for salad which is pretty tasty. Sometimes the crackers & sesame sticks from the bread bowl are a bit stale which leads me to believe that maybe they re-use them if the prior guest didn't eat it (just an assumption). Last thing I ordered was the Romanian steak with stuffed shrimp which was delishhhhh BUT the sides really could use some love here. Bland mashed potatoes & corn. The Sherwood Diner is always a good idea!! Came in with some friends and was seated in a cozy booth. My waiter, Ivan, came up right away to take our drink orders. I ordered the Italian omelette with hash browns and it was absolutely delicious. My friend ordered the Reuben which literally looked like heaven. Next time I am definitely going to order the Reuben. I have lived in Inwood for about 30 years and have always visited Sherwood Diner for a quick bite with friends and family but I must say I am extremely disappointed in their treatment, disrespect and disgusting practices. On Saturday evening, I went there with a friend for dinner. After pondering over the menu; I decided on the Chicken Marsala with Penne. A short time later I received a beautiful plate of what I thought was fresh food. As I looked closer I noticed that the pasta under the sauce was from someone else's plate. It had grated cheese on a few pieces and some were cut up. I immediately notified the manager who tried to insult my intelligence and said the chef puts cheese on all the pasta (NO WAY) cause it's next to the other ingredients. I couldn't believe she thought I was that stupid. I called for the guy in front who basically ignored my call, was, had the nerve to charge me $7.95 for the little salad that came with meal (I sent that back as well) and was rude to me when I complained. I am so disgusted with them and their treatment of a paying customer. They were so wrong in so many ways. They got caught red handed recycling food and were too embarrassed to fess up. The star ratings on yelp are only a guide and I wish half stars could be awarded. I'd like to award 3.5 stars as not quite I'm a fan but certainly A-Ok and much better then my most recent review even though Sea Grass was awful in comparison and would have received 2.5 stars if I could. First thing I liked was the huge selection in the menu. It was a packed at lunchtime but we were seated quickly. We placed our orders and I thought it generous of them to bring pasta salad and pickles plate without us asking. I had a vanilla milkshake which was thick and creamy. Three of us were dining and we got a platter to share, it wasn't bad but I wouldn't order it again. I had the salmon burger with fries, this was poor as the burger tasted like it was from a packet and the fries were way too salty. One of our group had the club sandwich with turkey bacon that looked well presented and the best appeared to be the stir fried shrimp. Afterwards I was telling a friend about my experience and they said never order fish in a diner so I learnt a lesson. I'd be happy to eat here again and try something else from the extensive menu. read more

Had good experience here; ordered a turkey club with fries. Everything was wonderful and clean. Complimentary items (warm fresh rolls, sesame sticks, crackers, macaroni salad, coleslaw) were all provided and quite good. Waitstaff were both very professional and "awesome"; I did not go without. Ordered a chocolate shake after the meal, which was tasty, but took some time to arrive at the table. All in all a great Diner with almost too much to offer as far as a menu goes. They had almost everything you could imagine at a diner here (literally so many items to choose from). I would recommend this diner to anyone who likes a old world experience where you are treated with care and a familiar attitude. Lesson well learned tonight, stay as far away as you possibly can from the Sherwood on Mother's Day. Actually, it was my call so I'll take the blame for it. I was the chosen one to find the restaurant for the evening. Poor planning on my end, I waited too long to find a good restaurant to suit 12 people's different tastes and it just was not going to happen tonight (especially since it's one of the most celebrated occasions of the year). "It's too far, too much, too late, don't like their "special" menu choices", blah,blah,blah. Freak it, we're going to the Sherwood!! 6:00 was perfect and everybody loved the Sherwood anyway. Walking in, you'd think all of Nassau County had the same problem I had today. No BS, every table was taken but luckily we only had a few minutes to wait for ours. We were all starving!! Great service as usual and big smile on everybody's faces as all our orders were taken. Well, almost everybody until the waitress comes back 10 minutes later to tell, of all people, my hubby that they were out of what he ordered, Halibut. No big deal, 2nd choice was the Talapia. We're all having a great time but then the waitress comes back again and the conversation go's something like this: Waitress -"I'm deeply sorry about this sir, but unfortunately they are out of Talapia as well". I highly recommend the Salmon though". Hubby - "It's only 6:30, how can you be out of 2 things already?" Waitress - "Well, it is Mother's Day sir" Hubby - "OK, is the Salmon fresh" Waitress - "Yes, very, and I assure you they are not out of it" Hubby - "OK, fine" At this point everybody was enjoying their entrees, including me, and wasn't really noticing what was going on. Hubby to me "You know, Salmon was the last thing I wanted tonight". Me to Hubby "Relax, it is Mother's Day, don't worry about it, the Salmon's really good here". Always wanted to stop by this diner as we pass it often. The interior has a vibe that could use updating but the food was good- large portions for the price paid. Fried chicken was tasty and I was surprised how much I enjoyed the meatloaf. Service was prompt cause our waiter sat at the table next to us and when we needed something he was certainly nearby! First off, Sherwood is definitely one of my favorites in the Nassau region (and easily the best diner of the 5 towns area). More importantly, this diner is where two of the scenes from the classic Scorcese film, "Goodfellas," were shot at. Yes the surrounding area looks a little different but they had to get it period authentic, and if you look close enough you should be able to recognize Rockaway Turnpike. Irrelevant in a yelp review? Hardly because if I can satisfy your thirst for good cuisine and stimulate the brain with cultural knowledge then my mission is accomplished. So Sherwood; I must admit, at one point this place used to have a rather divey look to it. The polish that it once had faded over time; however, the owners clearly noticed this as well and gave the place a much needed facelift about five or so years ago. Parking is ample, seating is plentiful, yet expect to see crowds during many portions of the day. Service is fine too. Prices are reasonable. We always wish meals were cheaper but you do get your money's worth for each dish with larger portions compared to nearby diners. Quantiy means nothing if the items can't deliver, and deliver they do. True you aren't going to get the best meal in the world but you get some solid comfort food, with some items you might not expect to find at the average diner such as gyros and souvlaki. I'm a big fan of their breakfast and sandwich options here and both my family and friends have rarely been at the very least dissatisfied with our meal. I'm sure they have their off days as some reviewers have pointed out but if you order the right meal I'm sure you'll enjoy it. So go to the Sherwood "Goodfellas" diner and they'll make you an offer you can't refuse (Whoops wrong film). read more

I am absolutely appalled by how employees interacted during our dinner. The older heavy set waitress with poorly died red hair was talking to a younger bus boy as though he was an imbecile. Maybe it is because I am from Oregon and now live in Oakland where people respect one another but the older woman was yelling across the room at the young man and he just took her verbal beating. She didn't care how the diners she was yelling over felt. To add insult to injury she continued to bring every other employee into the conversation and formed a group that was singling out the young man. Can't say that she is racist but she was an older white woman who felt empowered by bringing the young black gentleman down. If I owned this diner, I would make sure that she stopped this behavior immediately or let her go. I will never patron this diner and hope others will follow suit. This review is for a diner that has stood the test of time in my hometown...you get free cole slaw (a yummy vinegar version with no mayo), pickles and mac salad to start, and a gigantic diner menu with many decent options at a good price. It's a neighborhood diner with a good menu for whatever mood you're in - a salad for those being good, or banana split/burger/cheese fries with gravy if you're feeling bad! But in all honesty, Sherwood Diner gets four stars because of my Cousin Zellie, who knew everyone on the staff there because she kept coming back for so many years. I like this diner...I don't love it, I don't hate it....I just like it. It's average, or a little below average...but it's just been there so long and feels regular. This is the only reason that I didn't give it two stars. Nothing changes and the food is decent, but there's nothing great about it. It needs to be renovated, it needs better service (but I think the same staff has been there forever), it's needs to be cleaned up and it needs to be aired out. Aired out because sometimes when I leave and go home I smell something like a heavy cigarette smoke on my clothes ...it's strange because no one is smoking there, but I think the place hasn't been aired out since people could eat and smoke in diners. Yes, that long ago. So with all of that being said it sounds like this place should be one or two stars, but it's not. Why? Because the food is decent and very generous portion wise. The staff is friendly, maybe not so conscientious about coming back to check on the customer, but they are friendly. The omelettes are very good and they will make any customization/swaps that you need. The salad and sandwiches are also pretty fresh. There's never really a wait (kind of a bad sign?) but it does the service that it's needed for. Look out for a dirty plate or glass every now and then (makes me cringe)....but if you are in the area and just need to grab something, the place is comfortable and decent most of the time. I wouldn't recommend that anyone go out of their way for this place but it's safe if you happen to be around. It's just kind of run down ...other than that, decent food at a decent price. I had just dropped my wife off at JFK and wanted to stay in the area until the flight took off just in case there was a problem. I drove east down Rockaway Blvd and found the Sherwood Diner. Parking is odd in a 1950's sort of way. I was seated immediately upon entering and was given water, a bread basket, cole slaw and macaroni salad immediately as well as my menus, which were typical diner menus. I was not asked for my drink order, and I did not think of it until my lentil soup was served. I ordered the seafood fra diavolo, a complicated dinner. it was served promptly and at the right temprature. Plenty of good seafood mussles, calamari, scallops and shrimp over linguini (How did that penne noodle get into my linguini). The wait staff really did not know how to serve seafood like this and I had to ask for grated cheese. The wait staff was very attentive and frequently refilled my water. The food was excellent. It was served promptly and at the right temprature. The ambiance was typical diner, it was a little noisy. There were televisions closed captioned. The manager was a little chatty but pleasant. He was interested in where I came from (Brewster) (Oh there are cows upstate, Me: No, no cows.) Totally hit the spot! I woke up very hungry one Saturday morning and was craving waffles. The only problem is that i'm gluten intolerant and its extremely hard to find gluten free waffles in the heat of the moment in my area. Nonetheless we were determined to fill our tummys that morning. After referring to the oracle (yelp), we found this place to be the nearest Diner with decent reviews. Very easy to find with a great amount of parking space available. We were immediately seated at a nice window booth, and our waitress was sassy and sweet (just the way I like them). I ordered scrambled eggs with turkey bacon and french fries and a green tea. Nothing fancy but completely playing it safe with my allergy . It totally hit the spot...all of it...down to the last bite. I was so full I was about to pop. The eggs were scrambled just right....not too dry and not too moist. The bacon was REAL turkey bacon ( I have been to other places that had some disgusting imitation bacon), It was crispy but not over cooked. For those who know me well, I LOVE french fries so having a heaping amount of fries on my plate made me oh so happy.
