I'm not a big sushi guy or expert - but when I want to take the wife out somewhere a bit different, I take her here :) They have a downstairs that is with chairs and upstairs where you sit on a cushion on the floor... and since I come here to do something "different", I usually eat upstairs. I get the Caliente Rolls, Dragon Rolls, Spider Rolls, JV Rolls, and Crunchy Macarena Rolls - and they are all awesome. The staff is very nice and one of the biggest pluses is that it is one of the few restaurants in the area that allows you to make reservations, which comes in handy in the weekends. Given the location and price point, I give this place five stars. read more

Then, we decided to sit at the sushi bar and we saw the fish are fresh and clean! Which is very important! I've been a customer of Shibui since 2012. At first I thought the place looked sketchy on the outside but let me tell you, best sushi you'd ever eat! When I had Facebook, I'd check in every time I'd go there, so one day I decided to count the times I had gone to Shibui - between the Facebook check-ins and the times when I didn't check in that I remembered, in a 2 year period I had gone to Shibui 120 times. It's been 3 years and I keep frequenting the place because of the good service and the good food! Props to this establishment and their staff! Would give a 0 stars if I could for the pick up service. This was such a disappointment when my friend and I ordered over $25 worth of food. I payed for it and left the restaurant. When we opened the boxes it was pure garbage and negligence. I wish I took pictures. I ordered the udon sukiyaki noodles, they gave it to me in a ginormous plastic box container. This thing was big enough to soak my feet in. When I opened it it was noodles and lettuce, in what looked like brown water. Utensils other than chopsticks were not provided. I was also given a miso soup. More water flavored and tofu. And a side of white rice which had to have been 3 Tbs. I payed $15!!! REDICULOUS for what I received. Will not be ordering from here again unless I'm there in person to defend what I payed for. Gross. read more

One of my favorite things about this restaurant is the fact you can sit on the floor upstairs. I personally find this so cute although, challenging to get up from. No matter where I go, Shibui continues to be my favorite Japanese restaurant EVER! What makes it special is the high quality service (everyone is very sweet and welcoming), fair prices, and the delicious, fresh food. You can't go wrong with anything you try here. Something else I love is the atmosphere- it's peaceful, I love the Nujabes music playing in the background and the romantic lighting upstairs. My friends and are accustomed to eating upstairs on the seat cushions, which gives Shibui that traditional feel. The food is AMAZING! I'm a huge foodie and everything I've tried here has me craving more. My faves are the portobello mushrooms appetizer, seaweed salad, spicy crunchy dragon roll, Dell roll, cooked dynamite (see appetizers from sushi chef in menu), beef sukiyaki, volcano roll, and so many other sushi. My family and I have just recently had dinner at Shibui for the second time and we all agree that the food and service are top-notch. We have tried a vast variety of items, from sushi to rolls to steak, and all have satisfied the palate admirably. We even decided to give dessert a try and were pleasantly surprised. So, you're probably wondering why, if the food and service are so great, why only 3 stars. The truth is that, but for one serious issue, I would have gladly rated this fine restaurant 5 stars. While eating, I watched as the busboy would wipe his face and mouth with his hand, then clear dirty dishes from tables, and, when done clearing the dishes, he would then use a spray cleaner and rag to clean the tables for the next guests. Without washing his hands, he would then proceed directly to occupied tables to fill guests water glasses and I watched as he grabbed glass after glass by the rim with his dirty hands. For gosh sakes, that is where people put their mouths to drink from the glass. To say I was grossed out would be an understatement. The proper procedure is, if you have to pick the glass up to refill it, grab it as low as possible and as far away from the rim as possible, then pour. No one knows where your hands have been, and no one should have to find out by putting their lips to who knows what. I have worked in this industry and one aspect of training that is of the highest importance is the public's health and safety. I'm just thankful that this individual doesn't work in the kitchen - I can only imagine the cross-contamination that would be occurring there if he did. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone if, and only if, they provide proper training to take care of the above unhealthy and unsavory situation. And for gosh sakes, even with clean hands a server should never pick up a glass by the rim - grab the glass near the bottom. read more

I've worked in the restaurant business for years since I was old enough to work. I worked for various high end 5 star rated restaurants in those years (Darden being one of them.) When we walked into it arriving prior to our reservation time to be only greated to "take a seat." Stunned at the response we waited.. 15 minutes after our reservation time passed, when I walk up to the host station to ask when we would be seated, the nerve of the older Asian lady behind the station puts a HAND in my face! Not even eye contact with me. Never have I ever been treated so rudely at a restaurant! To then only walk past us, to seat a family of 4 that had no reservations just walking in to seat them at a table of 6?! Wtf we stormed the host station furious and hungry. When I stated i would be writing a review They then frantically moved the family over to a table right next to it at a table of 4. (Which they should've done) the host did not plan the seating accordingly and seems to be packing the restaurant like a sardine can. The fish and sashimi was great and so was our lovely waiter. The sushi fell apart in every single one of our plates. The quality is good but the craftsmen ship was rubbish. I've worked long enough to know if your reservation is at a time. You should be sat within the time frame! The host station was rude and annoyed with us. I hope the owner sees this and addresses this manner to never happen again. This place is a great little hole in the wall in South Miami. I came here for a pre-birthday dinner and it was some of the best sushi I've had in Miami. They have a section where you can sit upstairs on the floors, but we opted for being normal and sitting on a regular table and chairs. I'm inclined to give this 4 stars instead of 5 just because the service was slow. A server did not show up to our table initially for about 10 minutes. Once she did she was great though. I ordered their special iced green tea and it was amazing. Not just any regular old green tea, but made with the finest from Japan. For appetizers (which could have been my own meal) I ordered the Tuna Sushi Sandwich which was to die for. It had great texture and flavor with the spicy mayo and crunchiness of the rice and seaweed. I also ordered the Mexican roll which had that delicious avocado on top (imitating guacamole). My friend ordered the age tofu, which she claimed tasted really fresh. Another friend of mine ordered the Chirashi, which she swears by. The sushi rice is delicious and the sashimi tastes really fresh. At the end they brought out a birthday tempura cheesecake which was so crunchy and sweet. Great way to end the night! I highly recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood! read more

I love sushi. And this place has VERY fresh sushi. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants and have found that the closer you are to the ocean, the fresher the fish is. Coincidence? Maybe. But Shibui, being further than a rocks throw to the ocean, is as fresh as it gets. A couple of small negatives. Shibui is small with tight walking spaces. Does this take away from the food? Absolutely not. Just an observation. Second, they don't serve ice tea! Just green tea. (iced) Is iced tea going out of style? Again, not even close to removing a star! There's a seating area upstairs with floor seating! Again tight, but the experience more than makes up for the small spaces. This place deserves every star! By far, my favorite sushi restaurant. I've been to plenty of sushi places around Miami and no one comes nearly close o Shibui. I rarely eat at the restaurant though as it is always packed and sitting on the floor is only "cool" for the first two or three times. I mostly order take-out from here abut 3 times a month or so. Everytime i call the hostess is very nice and never puts me on hold (which i love). She always gets my order correct and never misses out on anything. It takes about 15 minutes for y order to be prepared and once its ready, its always correct. Never had a problem with them and the sushi is Grade A! read more

The tuna sandwiches to start, pinky rolls or cuke salmon (if you prefer sushi with no rice) come next, and either Green tea Creme brûlée or Thai donuts to finish.... Can't go wrong. Add in some hot sake and you've got yourself the best sushi place in town. My wife is a big fan of the plum wine. If you have kids, the chicken Katsu is a big hit. The environment is great, whether you sit upstairs or downstairs. I find sitting on the floor uncomfortable but it adds to the experience. One tip....
