I would say in terms of deals, you get more bang for your buck with the lunch specials. For lunch, I shared the mai premium lunch ($28) and the udon soup ($16). The premium lunch came with miso soup and 9 small dishes in a beautiful bento box. Definitely aesthetically pleasing and I liked the variety. The udon soup was also great with chewy udon noodles, sweet savory soup, and tempura shrimp/veggies. Service was attentive and nice. I have been here twice for happy hour. Sincerely, one of the best happy hours in Coral Gables, if not Miami. All appetizers are half off, and they have some rolls for discount prices from 4 to 6 daily and I mean daily! Yes! Including on Saturdays! Drink specials as well, including five dollar sake and beer. I had been extremely disappointed with the Sushi in Miami as you may see from previous reviews. So it was with caution and trepidation that I entered this little establishment. It is tiny and on the corner along miracle Mile. It feels a bit like you stepped off of the bourgeoisie (bougie) street of miracle Mile in Miami and right into Japan. The bar seats have cotton kimono like jackets on the back seats and the lantern had a nice touch. Service was great! It is like they could be my mind but not in a creepy way :). When I was about to ask for water, I would look over and see that my glass was already being filled. When I looked to see that my drink had about 1/3 of the way left, the server would ask if I would like another. Now for the best part: THE FOOD Okay, I admit, the table spread in the picture I posted I do NOT completely remember the name of the rolls. Here's the thing: there are tastes, dishes and combinations that I would have never in my wildest dreams ever had thought to pair together- and they are DELISH. There are MANY dishes that you cannot find ANYWHERE in the USA, and I've lived everywhere (NYC, Brooklyn, NJ, Philly, Orlando, Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis to name a few...). Plus they have some of the garden variety dishes that one may find at any sushi restaurant, but they execute each dish well with a good balance of flavors, seasonings and layers and layers of umami. For example, the seafood sunomono is fantabulous. Seaweed has a crunch, there is an abundance of seafood, including real crab, and the vinegar dressing is not too sweet, too salty or too acidic like so many other sunomonos. No soggyness here, which makes the textures just a party on the palate. The crunch of the seaweed, texture of the octopus, differentiated with that of the crab and the unique-texture of octopus. SOOOO GOOOD. The best thing here, and most unique, are the pintxos. Bite sized (or a bit bigger than bite sized) concoctions of various seafood, veggies, and other ingredients placed together on a savory wafer. There are SO MANY combos here that I had never seen before; like the saba with marinated peppers, shiso leaf and PLUM mayo. Or the fresh water eel with monk fish liver, scallions and eel sauce And uni with snow crab and truffle mayo? Say what? And they are sooo good. In the pictures, we have a spicy tuna roll that was on happy hour, braised pork belly, a pintxos sample, and then the table spread: escargot, ika in soy butter and spicy roe, tuna tartare with wonton chips, seafood sunomono, and 4 rolls...one is spicy tuna, crunchy coral gables and...an unagi? and kissing dragon with the tempura shrimp with crab mix on top? I am sorry, I was too busy nom nomming to pay closer attention! There is also an octopus dish with peppers (on the bamboo mat), which was seasonal. I also have had the calamari with shishito peppers, which are also delish. Essentially, if you like Japanese flavors and would like to stray off of the regular path in terms of what most restaurants have to offer this genre, take a trip to Miracle Mile. Love this place! I came here for all day happy hour on Tuesday, starting at 4:30pm and it did not disappoint! All appetizers are 50% off and select sushi rolls are offered at a great price! There are traditional Japanese dishes as well as interesting and cool mash ups, like the pintxos, which I will need to come back to try. We ordered the Ika mentaiko butter, which was my absolute favorite dish. The ebi croquette was unique and delicious, and the karaage is always a classic tasty dish. Nestled right on the iconic Miracle Mile, Mai Sushi Tapas Bar is one of Coral Gables' newest spots. I decided to come eat here after a while feeling under the weather. My fiancé didn't join me this time (gasp), but she still vicariously ate through pictures I sent her. Upon entering I was immediately taken care of and was sat at the bar per my request. The restaurant itself is just what you expect from a Coral Gables spot. It has a cool flair to it. It is much smaller than other places so expect to wait if you're a bigger party on a busy night. To start things off I order a Manju Junmai Ginjo which was so sweet and easy on the palate. Then I ordered my food and really just went for it. I ordered two orders of sashimi featuring the hamachi and unagi. I ordered an uni sushi. And I ordered the 8 piece assorted sushi box. Once my order was taken care of I was sat waiting for a while. This allowed me to watch some anime (the OG Gundam was being projected onto a wall so that was dope to enjoy) while I waited for my food. Once it came out I was able to dig in and wow, let me just say this was amazing. Each cut was perfect and delicious and perfectly paired. The hamachi and unagi went so well together with the hamachi being cold and unagi hot. The assorted box could be eaten any way you'd like but I opted to do it in order from top left to bottom right and wow. Each sushi had such a fun unique flavor profile and was such a delight. The uni was a flavor bomb. One bite of it and I knew it was easily my top bite of the night. Once I finished my food I had to inquire about dessert. It is NOT featured on the menu but rather is word of mouth. I opted for the Chicha Morada Ice Cream which was such a nice refreshing palate cleanser to end the night. Overall though, this was such a nice surprise. We had been wanting to come here for a while and to see it actually lives up to the hype was so great to see. The premium box was a great balance of different items and way to sample- perfect for sharing. Everything was delicious- very fresh sashimi and sushi- not fishy. We had pork belly two ways and both amazing, esp the braised pork belly app. The bacon wrapped skewers in the premium box with scallops were also great. My favorite items in the box were the sashimi and rolls. Next time I will try more sushi and sashimi. Cocktails were also great. And dessert was the matcha cheesecake with ice cream and also good.
