The only reason for the docking of one star was the actual waiter seemed very strange.... he was wearing street clothes with super baggy pants. Didn't even look like he worked there. We ordered take out. Total bill for 7 was over $100. When we got the order home, we were missing a $17 sushi roll AND had an empty styrofoam container. I called back up to ask about the missing roll, and the manager got on the phone. He told me they had given me everything we ordered. I tried to explain the missing carton, and he told me I was a liar, that everyone always tries to get free food. Then he told me to bring all the food we ordered back to the restaurant to prove we were missing the roll. He was so belligerent, I finally just thanked him and hung up. The menu is a copy of jensei combined with surin, but the food isn't as good. It is very pricey for the quality and lack of customer service. Hubs and I shared the spring rolls, curry potstickers (OMG, SO GOOD), and the spicy coconut tofu soup. ALL really really tasty. My family and I went here for my birthday sushi fix. I got seaweed salad which is a favorite of mine. It's pretty hard to make a mistake with that. I ordered a Futomaki roll. It was prepared perfectly and more than enough for me. My husband ordered a Black Dragon roll which was soft shell crab. It was fresh and very good. My daughter enjoyed a Strawberry Indulgence cocktail and a Thai dish. We did not have any leftovers. We did eat on the patio with the weather being delightful. Dined here on a Sunday evening. Great little sushi bar on a corner near a lot of other restaurants in walking distance. I had the beef salad, roll tide roll and the salmon sashimi. By far the best sushi I've had in Birmingham for a reasonable price. Staff was super friendly, there was one small mistake with the salmon sashimi but once they fixed it we were very pleased. I was back for lunch with a business associate and had the Seafood Avocado, which is listed as an appetizer, as my main dish. This is an exquisite preparation!! Spicy and sweet crab, shrimp and fish minced and combined, then baked inside the avocado with sauce inside and on top, finished with crispy-brown panko breadcrumbs ... there were GREAT photos of this dish on Yelp already, so I didn't bother to take more. This was one of the top ten things I've ever eaten in my life - and was a perfect lunch portion, filling but not over-the-top. This is an excellent date place. Intimate with a friendly and accommodating staff. The Seafood Baked Avocado was light and enough for one. Tonight was my first visit to Shiki, and overall I had a good experience. The restaurant is simply beautiful from both the inside and the out! But didn't seem like a place that would judge whether you showed up in a nice dress/suit or just jeans (with a shirt/shoes of course).They have almost as many sushi rolls to choose from as they do main entrees. The menu looks almost identical to that of Surin's so it wouldn't be too difficult for you to decide what you want if you eat there often either. I ordered three different rolls to try. The hamachi nigiri is yellowtail and a little more raw fish than I am used to, but that goes for any sashimi I eat. The 26.2 was my favorite, as I love both avocado/ cream cheese and had just the right amount of tuna to make me taste it but not be overwhelmed. The shrimp tempura roll was a nice change from the fish, and great for people who are hesitant about consuming uncooked fish/shellfish. The only reason I'm giving them four stars instead of five is because they have stiff competition with Jinsei which is my favorite sushi place. The fact they are right down the street doesn't help with Shiki's business either, so I may save Jinsei as the place I get sushi while I will probably go back to Shiki to try their Thai menu. read more

The atmosphere here is confusing, combining the decor of the previous restaurant (a west coast taco joint) with Asian flare and a disco type light. The food that we had was mediocre and barely warm. We had pad Thai, a Vulcan sushi roll, and a chicken panang. Nothing "wowed" us, and frankly we were disappointed to have spent $45+. Maybe it was just a bad night for them, but it's hard to say if I'll give it another chance. Overall I feel there are much better Asian spots in Birmingham. read more

I even drove all the way across town to reach the restaurant based upon the reviews, however I found myself quite disappointed at the conclusion of my meal. I was seated at the sushi bar by an exceedingly nice and helpful hostess. My order was taken promptly and they even took care to make sure that they understood my order correctly. Every staff member at Shiki was amazing! They were polite and attentive, I just wish they had better food to represent. I ordered the Rainbow roll, a maguro nigiri, and a hamachi nigiri. The rolls and nigiri were competently assembled and looked reasonably inviting, but my praise of the food ends there. Each piece of fish was frozen and bland and unapatizingly served on warm rice. I'm struggling of thinking or more ways to describe the food, however everything was just so flat that I am lost for words. Nothing tasted fresh or vibrant. Nothing had any sort of seasoning. The sushi was unbelievably overpriced for what I received (my three items cost over $30). At a premium price point I expected something interesting and tasty and instead I got a meal that seemed more like Chinese buffet sushi than an upscale sushi bar. I am a fan of thai food and wanted to try somewhere new. We went for lunch and the price was just right. The portion sizes are also very good. I started with crab wontons. They were fresh but had more cream cheese than crab. It was still pretty good but can be overwhelming due to the cheese. For entrée I ordered the spicy beed noodles. They were good. my coworkers had pad thai and sushi and they were also quite pleased with their meals. I'd definitely go back to try more options on the menu. This place blows Surin's lunch special out-of-the-water... while many of the menu items are the same and the prices are comparable, the flavors here are SO MUCH more on-point than Surin, woot! A new place in homewood that I have driven by a few times. We had a couple errands to run in that part of town and decided to stop by for lunch. It was a cool atmosphere, bright colors, and had a good vibe. We were both really hungry and excited to get started. The appetizers were fantastic. I would completely recommend the Crispy Rock Chicken on top of the cabbage. The sauce was perfectly balanced and let the chicken be the star. The breading was light and the portions were better than I expected. We also ordered the spring rolls and the Amazon sushi. I haven't had sushi in a while, but I can tell you this was the bomb! It was delicious and presented really nicely. It was my favorite part of the meal and can't wait to go back and try some other types of rolls and sushi. Our entrees were good, I had the spicy beef noodles and my wife had the masaman chicken. I really liked mine. It had some good heat and the noodles were really good, they weren't like a lo mein noodle, but like a fettuccini type noodle.
