I was trying to decide whether to give Shiki 3 or 4 stars. The food is always good. Whether you get the appetizers, sushi, or full entrees, it's going to be delicious. My only complaint is that the food always takes abnormally long to come out. Every time I've been there the waiter or waitress has apologized to our table for how long it's taken. Once they get this figured out I definitely think they'd be worthy of 5 stars. read more

This is my favorite sushi and Thai food sanctuary. Their So Fresh So Clean roll is most likely the best thing I have every eaten in the sushi world. Not to spicy but you know it's got heat behind it. The Chicken Panyang is another amazing dish with a melody of flavored that will leave you taste buds wondering if the wondered into heaven. And one more huge slam dunk besides everything else is the basil roll. We love the staff they are always excited to see you come back and trust me we will. read more

Owner is nice but the location has no parking and the inside of the restaurant seems like a mid-level fast food place - probably because it was a taco joint at one time. The biggest problem is the obnoxious, loud music. It was like being at a dance club while trying to each lunch at 1:30 on a Saturday. There is practically no sound deadening material in the room, just tons of tile, glass and other hard surfaces. So the people are screaming at each other trying to communicate over the ridiculously loud music. If you live right there in the apartments, I guess its an OK option if you can tolerate the noise levels. Otherwise, no real reason to go there. read more

This is a nice lunch spot with great outdoor seating. Their lunch menu had ten or so different sushi rolls with several Thai entrees to choose from. To start, I tried the crab angels (cream cheese and crab stuffed in wonton wrappers). The skin was perfectly crispy and not too greasy, though I was a bit disappointed that the inside was 90% cream cheese with little crab. I took advantage of their $9 sushi roll special (I think on Sundays?) and also tried the Rock 'N' Roll. We were a little rushed toward the end of our meal as our sever's shift was ending, but overall they were nice and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine for a bit. read more

I have been here 3 times now, two times for dinner and once for lunch. I have yet to have a bite that that was not fantastic. Shiki catfish is awesome, as is the Shiki Roll. Went here for lunch. Really good sushi and the pot stickers were good too! Only had one issue, the waitress spilled my friends cocktail all over her and didn't offer to take it off of our bill. I ate at Shiki last night and absolutely LOVED it! Their tom yum was incredible with amazing flavor. Their Sushi was fantastic and clearly done with great care and presentation. I went back tonight and the food was fantastic again. If i were staying in the area another night I would absolutely go back a third time. The prices are so low they do not reflect the high quality of the food! The service was great and i love how welcoming and nice everyone was both nights!!!!!!! Another one of those rare date opportunities. As a couple with a 2 kids, the youngest being sickly and drama filled my wife and my date opportunities are extremely limited and usually comprise of a nice lunch just the 2 of us. This Saturday I had previously procured a couple seats to see Wicked, which my wife was dying to see, and planned lunch before hand. Options on Saturday lunch fine dining are extremely limited. Most of the recognizable high end sushi places aren't open for lunch on Saturday. I read a few reviews and selected Shiki, it's on the way, new has Thai and sushi and is receiving rave reviews. Upon entering its a very small dozen table restaurant inside with seating for 8-10 at the sushi bar and a half dozen or so more tables outside on the patio. It's nicely decorated and the staff were friendly and provided prompt service. We were permitted to select our own table as there was a couple at the sushi bar with only one table being occupied. It was 4th of July wkend and I took that into consideration; but I was a bit nervous at the super new, hot and trendy Thai /sushi bar is empty at lunch on a Saturday. We ordered spring rolls, mamasan chicken, a couple specialty rolls and a spicy tuna roll. I opted for the soup with the mamasan and it was pretty exquisite. The spring rolls were crispy and not greasy! The mamasan was on par with the legendary Thai spot everyone loves in 5 points. The sushi was good as well. My wife loved the specialty rolls.. A fried shrimp tempura roll and a crab angel roll. She even liked my spicy tuna ,which she typically avoids raw. The spicy tuna roll was a bit different than most you get in Birmingham instead of minced tuna in a spicy red hot sauce mixture it was thin slices of good quality tuna with spicy mayo. A very nice meal to share. Roughly $50.00 for lunch. The sushi is a bit pricey and they could definitely use a couple sushi lunch specials but it's also good quality which I'm willing to pay for. They have a limited sushi menu as well. I'm of the opinion they make a couple dozen really good rolls vs 100 mediocre ones. On the other hand the mamasan lunch special was only $8.00 w soup. A very enjoyable lunch. Was actually nice that it was practically empty. I seriously doubt anyone else will enjoy that opportunity short of s similar holiday wkend scenario. Look for this place to draw a crowd and have long waits in the future. read more

We love Thai food and we're surprised that this restaurant has been around for almost a year and we didn't know about it. We came for lunch yesterday and were so happy with our experience. Our server was Yoga ( I think that was his name) and he was so amazing. I wanted to take him home! Nothing was a problem ( my favorite characteristic in a good restaurant) and every order can be customized. They will spice any dish to suit your needs and that is important to us. We love spice but don't want it so hot that it overwhelms the delicate flavors in Thai food. We started with the tofu coconut soup ( or something like that) and it was wonderful. Next we had the basil spring rolls that I loved. The lettuce inside is so crispy and chilled but the wrapper is soft and delicious. The peanut sauce is to die for. Our waiter noticed how much I liked it so he brought me two different versions of it to go with my meal ( who does that?) I agree with a previous review about the beef salad. I order this at any Thai restaurant just to compare and this was the best I have ever had. At most places it is usually tasty but often the beef is tough. This was melt in your mouth tender and I will get it again for sure. My husband had the Chicken Panang and he loved it. The sauce was creamy and velvety with just the right amount of spice. This place is a jewel in the crown of Thai restaurants in B-Ham and if our lunch experience was this good we can't wait to go back for dinner. Our waiter also took the opportunity to let us know that several days have specials like Mondays all appetizers are half price. Other days have other specials and we really appreciated him telling us about them. Give it a try and you will be coming back for more. Parking was not a problem for us ( as others have suggested) we parked just across the street. It is no different than any place in Homewood. Worth it if I had to walk several blocks ( but I didn't ). Can't wait to return. read more

I went to Shiki on a Friday night with a friend. I heard that they had great sushi, so I was excited to try it. When I entered, I wasn't greeted at first, but watched as the hostess frantically tried to please a complaining couple. From my experience, I would suggest that you use Google to reserve a table with them in order to be seated right away. I was eventually greeted and was seated at an open table. I didn't not have anyone to ask for a drink or introduce themselves until after my friend arrived. One of the staff members came and apologized about the wait, which was considerate of her. We both started with margaritas; I had the blackberry margarita and my friend had the jalapeño margarita. I had the jalapeño margarita the second time. The blackberry margarita was great but the jalapeño margarita was amazing! We also placed our orders for sushi, which we were the first on our side to do so, the two tables beside us ordered a good 10 minutes after us. Even though we ordered first, the other two tables were served before us, which was bizarre. We did express our concerns with our waitress who gave us our drink off and a small dessert, but we felt that it could have been avoided all together. The sushi and drinks were good. My advice is to reserve a spot in advance, order drinks first and order your food AS SOON as you sit down... read more

I've never received such poor service in my life. We sat outside because there were a bunch of college kids inside who were so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. Our food took over forty minutes to come out. Which wouldn't have been too terrible, but people seated after us had their food come out before ours. When we were halfway through eating, it started to drizzle and the staff came out to ask the people seated outside if they wanted to come sit at the bar inside. They asked all the parties outside except for us. We felt so disrespected we quickly finished out food and went inside to pay and leave as fast as we could. They were even slow with printing out the receipts. The owner had to take over for the cashier and complete our bill for us. Anyway won't ever be coming back. Location is cute but food is overpriced, service is slow, sushi chef is inexperienced. I watched the sushi chef working and she literally took 30 seconds to slice one piece of sashimi. So sad to write this review because I love this place. Last night we ordered take-out and it was a huge disappointment. I've had better grocery store sushi. The size of the rolls was different than normal (very small) and one of our rolls was just avocado wrapped in rice?! For $34 I couldn't believe what we got. Historically their sushi has been excellent so I'm not sure what's going on. Also, I love their coconut tofu soup and even that was off. It had no flavor and tasted very watered down. Had a great lunch here the other day. For sushi lovers, the yellowtail jalapeño appetizer was excellent. The squid salad was very fresh and perfectly seasoned. Loved the duck curry. My dad asked one of the workers (owner?) at the end of our meal if they had some kind of thai soup he had tried while in Thailand last year, just out of curiosity and to make conversation.
