Shiki is a really really sad excuse for Thai food and sushi. It is similar to Surin where there is massive amounts of sugar in EVERYTHING (including the sushi!) so if you like Thai food with your sugar this is your place. I've given it several chances since I want to like it, but it is just too Americanized to me. The curry didn't have any spice and just tastes like sugar coconut water. The pad see ew doesn't get cooked on a hot enough wok and has no flavor. There is mayo in every sushi roll even the plain basic ones. If you are white you would probably love this place. read more

Regardless of how full the restaurant is, the wait time is never long and staff is always very on top of getting your party seated. I've been to Shiki twice now and both times I enjoyed it! The first time I went, I had sushi, I think it was a dragon roll. It was fresh and delicious. The second time, we tried the beef bulgogi, Panang Chicken Potstickers, and the Auburn sushi roll. The beef bulgogi was pretty good. The beef didn't taste like the best quality, but the sauce was incredible. The potstickers were my favorite, with just the right amount of heat. The auburn roll was delicious as well! The restaurant itself is nice, there is a lovely outdoor seating area and the decor inside is trendy and cool. My only complaint was that the music was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. Shiki offers delicious Thai food that is presented artistically and served by a friendly and courteous staff. The corner location on a trendy block in Homewood offers indoor and outdoor seating. Colorful lights that cast various designs on the walls and ceiling aren't an obvious choice for ambience, but we don't mind it. Masaman chicken is a favorite and my husband loves the Nom Tok beef (a little spicy for me). Came here for happy hour...to find that they do not offer happy hour drink specials anymore (disappointing). My friend had mentioned that Shiki previously had a great drink special with $5 margaritas and $6 mojitos but unfortunately they are no longer doing that. Now the baseline price is $6 margaritas and $7 mojitos, which is still a pretty good price point compared to other places. I love a good mojito and I was delighted to find that they had a multitude of flavors to choose from. I love mint so I ordered a mint mojito and it was great! It was so light and refreshing, and one of the best mojitos I've had in Birmingham. The Thai apps were half-off so I got the Crispy Rock Shrimp and an order of the Sake Toro Nigiri. I'm not a big fan of overt sweetness in my savory dishes so the shrimp were a little sickly sweet/heavy for me personally but everyone else at my table loved it. The Toro wasn't what I expected because it was torched/cooked, and that's not what I typically think of when I have Toro (usually served raw). It tasted good but I didn't settle my sashimi craving because that wasn't what I was looking for. Overall, I loved the drinks but I don't feel strongly one way or another about the food. Since we have been sticking to our tried and true places during the pandemic, I am all about updating reviews based on delivery or pick-up procedures. I also try not to hold the food quality to the same standard under the same rules. When it comes to Shiki, nothing really changed in the transition and everything I expected is what I got! The chicken coconut soup needed to be reheated a little. But it was fantastic. The kids shrimp was MUCH appreciated by the two three year olds that live in my house. As for everything else, the calamari was fantastic. And note again, it is fried calamari that traveled and was still really good. I liked the sweet sauce that came with it. The blazer roll was good. But I have had better rolls there. And the cashew chicken is what I expected. I might get something different in the future. But my wife wanted to avoid the extra carbs with noodles or rice. It was a lot more casual/laid back rather than a "date night" place, but that can be a good thing or bad thing depending on the occasion. The food: I had the Super Crunch roll and also got to try the 26.2 roll. My super crunch roll was actually one of my favorite sushi rolls I've had in the past couple years as a sushi lover. It was so delicious and honestly just melted in your mouth which was a strange sensation for sushi. I loved the combo of the sauce on it as well as the raw salmon that comes on top. However, I do wish that I had gotten two as the roll was rather small in comparison to other sushi places ive been to. The service- Our waitress was pleasant, noninvasive, and kept our water glasses full so it kept our experience very positive. This night I had it delivered. A risk for sure however we were playing a family game. Worth the risk. The delivery was prompt and the food was both fresh and hot. Now that is out of the way. The food was of the highest quality. Let's start with Sushi. We change up every order. Every items is great. My only suggestion is have some soy sauce at your home, they never give you enough. The two types of spring rolls were very good. One is fried and the other was more of a vegetable roll in a translucent wrapper. It did have some crab in it but not that much yet just enough. The Pad Tia was very good this evening. Usually it is a little sticky. Not tonight. The Stemmed dumplings was a winner especially with the Sause they provide. I had a really positive experience here tonight. First, "there might be a tornado" so 95% of restaurants are closed in BHM. Mmmkayyy, where I grew up, if there might be a tornado, we might be outside with a beer waiting to see it! Kudos the the Shiki people for not packing it in and being lame. Second, they stayed open a bit late for me to finish my food. Everybody was so kind and polite. The people aspect of this place was just great. You can't fake a good attitude like that, this was just good old fashioned good service and customer appreciation. I went for dinner to Shiki to meet some friends. I'd heard great things about the place previously. The food was good. I wasn't a big fan of my sushi roll as it wasn't rolled very tight. The noodles were excellent tho. The service when we went was horrible. You shouldn't have to ask a waitress multiple times for silverware. I was also never offered a refill on my water. Unfortunately she got lucky that we were in a group of 6 so gratuity was automatically added to our party, otherwise her tip would have been less from everyone in our group. My lovely wife and I dined at Shiki last night and it was a marvelous experience. It was cold outside and the night called for hot and spicy food. Shiki is a slightly quirky but always delicious place to eat. It is conveniently located in Homewood but a little hard to find parking sometimes. She had the Spicy Beef Salad and I had the Nom Tok Beef; we shared the roasted edamame appetizer. The edamame came out very hot from the grill; it was almost too hot to eat and that made it incredible. There was a sweet soy and roasted garlic sauce on top of the edamame and it was divine! The sauce was so good that I finished it off after the edamame was gone. The Nom Tok Beef is described on the Shiki online menu like this: "Grilled beef in a spicy mixture of basil leaves, rice powder, red onion, and fresh cabbage." Let me say this: the combination of basil + onion and possibly the rice powder makes for the most incredible mouth experience. The spicy heat from the chili was intense but not overwhelming. I had one very slight reservation about this dish - the coldness of the fresh cabbage cools the temperature of the food a bit, especially by the end of the meal. When I eat it again, I will ask that the cabbage be served on another plate. My wife said that the Spicy Beef salad was spicy and delicious with many nuances of flavor. She seldom gives a perfect review to any book or restaurant. In fact, I am still amazed that she approved me to be her life-long mate. She gave the Shiki experience and their Spicy Beef Salad five stars. Finally, the value. It was superb, especially in these inflationary times. We paid $44 for the meal and left a $10 tip for the excellent service of Fivi, our server. She was fast and friendly; she gave excellent advice and brought the food out quickly. What a great surprise, came here on the wife recommendation. Was not disappointed, I had the blackberry mojito.... YUM!!!!! Since I don't really care for Thai food I played it safe and went for the philly roll... I have to admit it had a huge portion of smoked salmon in here... having said that it was a bit mushy in texture than I was used to. Well over 3/4th of the roll was salmon....
