This is our fourth visit, and we love Shiki! The food is flavorful and presented well. Lunch servings come with complimentary coconut soup (loaded with flavor and tofu) or a tasty salad. So good! We always get at least one sushi roll-- sometimes much more. It's tempting because the sushi bar and chef are visible from most any table. The service is quick. Ok so after going back to Shiki for a proper sit down meal, I'm updating to make this 5 stars. The customer service was great, and the dishes came out looking lovely. We tried the Seafood Baked Avocado first, which was really good. Could go without the mayo that comes on it, it's just adding fat to fat. Next I had the two piece Unagi Nigiri, which is fresh water eel. It wasn't bad but wasn't great, but that's just my personal taste. I'm not sure how into eel I am, but it was fresh! Give it a try yourself. The sushi rolls we tried were both good. My date had the Rock n Roll and I did the Volcano. Little did I know that my Volcano would literally come out on fire. Nice touch! This was so good. Everything was great. We tried the crab angels to start. They were good as well with lots of filling. I like when they are not heavily fried and these were not. I ordered the chicken basil. It had great flavor and a lot of spice. I'm sweating just thinking about it! I would definitely get it again. My friend had the spicy beef salad. He let me try it, it was so flavorful and also had good heat. I would order this for sure. Hubby had the sushi and they really had many rolls to try. Well all the accolades and positive reviews are dead on. This place is the real think when it comes to Thai and sushi. For some reason we were expecting a Tazikis/Moe's kind of experience where you walk up, order and they bring it to the table. We were shocked to be greeted at the door by a pleasant hostess who showed us to our table. The place is pretty without being Asian garish. A sort of hip vibe feel with some cool Asian art pieces. To start with, they still don't have their alcohol license but they do allow you to bring in your own beer and wine and they will uncork it bring you glasses for no fee. They do recommend currently calling before you come if you plan to bring your own b/c they are planning on having a license come through soon, so be forewarn. We started with the spring roll app and the chicken larb. Spring rolls were light and crispy with a sweet soy dipping sauce. They are veggie based and melted in your mouth with a great crunch. The chicken larb is the Thai version of lettuce wraps, but with cabbage to roll the chicken filling. The filling was chopped up chicken which was spicy and vinegary, with red onion and basil throughout. When rolled in the crispy cabbage it was fresh, light spicy and delicious. BTW, everything here is served beautifully, from the spring rolls in a glass to the use of veggies for decoration. Our dinner was Masaman Shrimp (the menu has it with chicken but you can substitute shrimp or steak on any dish for a slight up charge) and pad prik with chicken. The Masaman shrimp was glorious. The sauce was velvety and coconut/curry deliciousness. The shrimp were cooked perfect and there were lots of them along with cashews and a huge scoop of rice. I just wanted to drink the sauce. Just a great dish. The Pad Prik was good, although the chicken texture was kind of spongy chewy....not the greatest quality of chicken. In the future I would substitute shrimp. The sauce was sweet and spicy with some peppers and onions throughout and again a big scoop of sticky rice. My only negative is the service was a little slow. It took over 20 minutes to get our apps which seemed kind of long. I would have given 5 stars if the service was a little quicker. But this was a small detail. In all, there is no doubt we will be back. Did not try the sushi, but all coming out looked great. That's on my list for next time...and there will be many next times to come. read more

I am very happy that Homewood has another quality Thai and Sushi option. I had lunch at Shiki, and I really enjoyed everything. I had the Spicy Beef Salad and my friend, David, had the Shiki Catfish. My dish was delicious. The salad and beef slices were an excellent combination. The sauce was sour and spicy with a hint of sweetness. The lunch entrees include soup or salad. I had the coconut soup. It had mushrooms and tofu, and a savory coconut flavor. David's fish was crispy on the outside and firm and tender inside. Our lunch portions were huge and a great value for a $8. We also had a Shrimp Tempura Roll as an appetizer. It was excellent. The tempura was crispy and you could tell it had just been fried. The rice used in the roll was perfect. The sushi and sashimi in the Yelp pictures look AMAZING! I did have trouble finding parking, but at dinner time, you can park across the street in the doctor office lot. read more

Shiki is by far my favorite Thai restaurant in Birmingham, probably my favorite I've ever been to anywhere. The interior has a really great vibe that plays in the Fusion vibe they go for. My go to is the Catfish Basil. It's a great meal for people who are new to Thai food and those who are fans of all things Thai. Catfish may sound like a weird thing to get from an Asian restaurant but trust me, try it before you judge it. Their Pad Thai is also the best I've ever had. As someone who loves all Thai food, I oddly normally hate Pad Thai but Shiki's is the only one that I enjoy. Their sushi selection is also really great! My favorite appetizer was the fatty salmon nigiri. It was so buttery and just melted in my mouth. The chicken panang and spicy seafood entree was delicious. It had enough spice and flavor. If I had made this review after my first visit it would be outstanding reviews except for one comment. However, I returned the 2nd day with someone that never had Sushi outside of a grocery store to introduce an entirely different experience to them. This review will cover both visits. The various dishes on the first trip were all outstanding. There was a language barrier issue when I requested no mint or basil in anything! I was almost ready to just pick it out while my servers (2) handled my request. We got through it and both of them provided excellent service. The first waitress ended up behind the counter slicing vegetables. As I was waiting to pay my bill I looked up to see her wipe her nose with her bare hand like a child. I sat there hoping she didn't continue prepping raw food without washing her hands. Yep! She picked up that knife and sliced the rest of the green onions or chives. Gross. This is something that needs to be addressed ASAP. The food was amazing. (Insert joke). The 2nd visit: We were seated immediately since we arrived at 5:00. One on the same waitress waited on us. The language barrier caused a slight misunderstanding in the orders but it was minor. The food was delicious again except for the Miso Spicy Soup. One of the item yesterday was also a Spicy soup that I enjoyed. The bowl of the spicy Miso Roman Noodles were ridiculously hot. The pork was perfectly cooked but too hot to process. My mouth was on fire. I actually sat there fanning my tongue while waiting on my glass to be refilled. I made my waitress aware of my discomfort and she chuckled and said "yeah it's " Spicy"That's it! No Offer to take it back, replace it or talk to the manager. I don't make scenarios because I don't want to be "That" type of customer. I am not in anyone's establishment ordering food unless I'm willing to pay for it. If a business gives me a bad order, Once I make them aware of the situation I will follow their lead. I'm going to pay for it. But it's going to be the last $.10 they EVER get from me. As I poured the soup into my Togo container, I noticed a thick mass of red seasoning in the original bowl. Maybe they added more spice than required? Later when the temperature drop what's better than soup? I was chilly and willing to doctor the bowl to try the soup again. When I looked at it in bright lights the broth was like a curry from all the excess chili. Even after adding coconut milk/broth and butter to the bowl, it was still too hot to consume. I felt like I was eating liquid TNT. Never had that reaction with any other spicy Thai item I've ordered. It was $17 wasted. The other problem that need to be addressed is how they process the Yelp discount offered when one checks in to the app. The server took my entire phone and walked away out of my sight. She came back to ask for my credit card WITHOUT my phone. I asked she immediately bring my phone back to me! They need to be able to process that discount at the table instead of disappearing with my opened device. That is a security major concern. Someone could be doing all types of nefarious behavior with my phone in the back. It took too long to close the bills because they applied the wrong tabs to the wrong cards and had to correct that. I had to waste time today getting the credit cards stored in my phone updated and activated. The food is outstanding, the place is extremely small, especially in this Covid ere. They need to invest in mobile unit that can close out table side. Their staff needs to take a refresher hygiene safety practice class including the proper way to reduce illnesses with hand washing! read more

We visited Shiki during the Iron Bowl, of all times. The restaurant was much less full than it usually appears during this time, so, not being huge football fans, we took advantage. We started with the Red Dragon Roll as our sushi appetizer. It was delicious and flash-fried to crispy perfection. Looking over the menu I began wondering if this restaurant was owned by the other local Thai chain in Birmingham, because of the similarities. I almost went with one of my tried and true dishes from that restaurant, but decided to go in a different direction at the last minute. I chose the ginger and mushrooms entree with chicken. The dish consisted of chicken, mushrooms, carrots, and zucchini tossed in a sauce with rice on the side. While the ingredients were of good quality, I was unimpressed with the sauce covering the dish, which was thick, dark, and super sweet. I've never been a huge fan of super sweet asian dishes though. I did find the long slivers of fresh ginger that were dispersed throughout the dish to be delightful. My dining partner tried the spicy beef salad, which he enjoyed, although it wasn't quite enough food for dinner. Good thing we had the sushi! We found the service to be lacking; long waits in between visits to our table and empty drinks. But, like I said, we did visit during the Iron Bowl. Soup or salad came with our entrees. We chose salad, it was okay just lettuce and cucumber. Noodle dish wasn't super flavorful or spicy I prefer the spicy noodle dish at surin. Chicken panang was really underwhelming as there was too much rice and veggies and not enough curry sauce. The veggies in both dishes tasted frozen. Like the lunch prices, $9 for each of our entrees. We love Shiki! Good atmosphere, good food, and good service. We always get sushi but if sushi's not your thing, they also offer Thai food. We usually sit outside in the patio area. It's nice being able to sit outside and enjoy our meal on a nice, warm night. It's definitely crowded out there, though. Shiki could benefit from losing one table outside to give guests more room and more privacy. The last time we were there we sat next to what sounded like a first date...it was awkward for all parties involved. The service is always great, although the last two times we've gone there, there was a waiter/waitress in training so I'm not sure if that's a good thing because they need more help or bad because they can't keep help. We started with an order of roasted edamame. I've never had it this way and it was the absolute best! So good I forgot to take a picture. I ordered the War Eagle roll and my husband ordered the Hangover roll. Both were great, but the War Eagle roll was sooo fresh. The food didn't take long to get to our table either. I just came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and I had to side-eye my friend a little bit because she's been hiding this gem from me! I love the ambiance, the music, the staff, and the FOOD! The ramen broth is full of body and very comforting to the body. Monday night is 1/2 off appetizers and having $5 margaritas, Mojitos, and wine is a nice touch to any happy hour. Came here on a Wednesday night. It was a nice evening so we sat outside. The service was prompt and the patio was very nice. They have $5 margaritas most nights during the week and it is a great deal. The margaritas taste great and are actually quite big. Would definitely be a great place to just have drinks. The margs also come in several flavors so we each had a lime and a strawberry. We started off with the Crispy Rock Shrimp as the appetizer and it was a great way to start off our meal.
