I'm surprised by the high ratings here, so if you're on the fence like I was, here's my experience. We made a reservation, but when we arrived it wasn't busy at all. There were 3 of us, and service was still incredibly slow. For example, it took about 20 minutes just to get an iced tea. The bigger issue was the food. In a place like La Jolla, I expect high-quality fish, and this just didn't deliver. The fish tasted bland and even looked off, noticeably paler than sushi I've had elsewhere. The crispy rice was disappointing, more mushy than crispy and pretty messy overall. The spicy scallop roll was so bad my cousin sent it back. The only thing I enjoyed was the albacore nigiri. I'd skip the Casanova, the Prospect, and the spicy tuna crispy rice.

I absolutely love this cozy sushi spot on prospect st. The service is always on point and I have yet to be disappointed with the food. Ever! I love the salmon here. Best in SD in my opinion because it's consistently delicious. The tuna tango is a great choice for your tastebuds. The truffle oil and the cilantro w avocado is chefs kiss perfection. The parking is literally the only negative and it has zero to do with the business just the location. For being in the village the sushi is very reasonably priced and the menu has a ton of vegetarian options. Highly highly recommend five hard stars!!!!! bravo! San Diego is a tough place for sushi bc there are so many choices, and while most of my favorites are hit n miss, Shiku is consistently top tier!!!!

Service is amazing. I had best conversations with the server. The chef are so nice. I asked them right away and they made it to me so fast and the design is so amazing and community is just together. COME TO THIS PLACE!

Dined outside for lunch since it was a beautiful day in sunny La Jolla. There were 2-3 seagulls hanging around eyeing the customers dining outside. One of the seagulls quickly swooped in and took one piece of Nigiri from my plate! The waitress took my plate and had the sushi chef remake my sushi order. Overall, all the dishes were delicious, however minus 1 star for the stolen sushi. If you dine outside, watch out for those hungry seagulls!

Really great spot! My friends and I unknowingly came in for happy hour on a Monday and was greeted with $5 wine, appetizers, and hand rolls. I took advantage of it and ordered the house white and a shrimp tempura hand roll while sharing the cartel roll. The food was really tasty and our server was awesome! I'd definitely come back again.

Great sushi and really reasonable prices. It's in a great spot down in La Jolla and I've never been disappointed

Their take on a rainbow roll was amazing!!

First time at Shiku Sushi, and it definitely did not disappoint. We were immediately greeted and got a table in the outdoor seating. David our server was amazing and made sure we had everything we needed and had some great recommendations on the menu. Would 10/10 recommend to anyone and I will definitely be coming back.

My friends and I came here for the happy hour on a Friday. We were seated immediately and all got multiple hand rolls, appetizers, and wine as a part of the happy hour deal. It was all excellent and came out fast. The music quietly played in the background so we could catch up and talk, which was great!!

This is not your typical sushi restaurant with the same rolls you see everywhere. Every dish was beautifully presented, incredibly fresh, and full of unique flavors. From the premium nigiri and sashimi to the creative specialty rolls, every plate felt like something special. The quality of the fish was outstanding, and you can tell the chefs truly care about every detail. Some of the highlights were the toro, salmon dishes, scallops, ikura, and several chef creations that were unlike anything I've tried before. Even the desserts were excellent and made a perfect ending to the meal. What impressed me most was that there wasn't a single dish I didn't enjoy. That's extremely rare. The food, presentation, atmosphere, and attention to detail were all exceptional. A huge thank you to my kids for bringing me here. Takaramono Sushi turned Father's Day into a memorable experience, and I can't wait to come back.

Some highlights: * The A5 Wagyu Tataki was delicious and one of my favorite dishes of the night. * The Uni Pasta was good, honestly some of the best uni pasta I've ever had. Rich and flavorful, but not heavy. * The Bluefin Tuna Belly, Hamachi, Hamachi Belly, Unigyu, Salmon, and Salmon Belly sushi were all fresh. * The Hon-Maguro Toro Tataki literally melted in my mouth. The toro itself was delicious, although I thought the ponzu sauce was a bit overpowering and would have preferred less of it so the fish could shine. The only item that didn't quite work for me was the Sweet Shrimp Sushi. The shrimp itself was good, but the lemon/cream topping overpowered the natural sweetness and felt unnecessary. I also wish the sushi pieces were a little bigger for the price haha. Parking can be a bit challenging since the lot is small and the spaces are tight, but there is street parking nearby. I'd come back and would recommend it to anyone looking for sushi in La Jolla. Yum!

Everything was great - the service, decor and most importantly, the sushi. I ordered the protein roll, a Philadelphia roll and a beer. Everything tasted fresh and given that we're a beach city, I liked how the protein roll came on a dish in the shape of a shell (see photo). I was happy that they had my Ichiban beer, as not all places serve it, but they only have it the large size and normally I order the regular size. They had comfy booths to sit in and a beautiful mural on the wall, which added to the ambiance. I felt like the restaurant was clean - a very important factor when eating raw fish! I don't get to downtown La Jolla very often, but I will definitely go back here again when in the area. Parking can be a little bit tricky, but we came in the early evening to avoid the later dinner weekend crowd. So we drove around for a bit and finally found a spot. The restaurant is definitely worth the effort!

With so many new sushi restaurants opening around town, it's a little out of the way for us, and honestly, I had almost forgotten about it. I'm so glad we decided to come back because it's every bit as good as I remembered. I made a reservation for the sushi bar, which is always my favorite place to sit at a traditional sushi restaurant. Instead of ordering my usual rolls, I decided to splurge on the Chef's Choice nigiri. I also asked the chef to serve each piece one at a time rather than bringing everything out at once. I love taking my time, enjoying each bite, and watching the chefs work, which is another reason I prefer sitting at the counter. The Chef's Choice was absolutely worth it. Every piece was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the aged toro, which had been aged for three months. It had such a rich, buttery flavor and completely melted in my mouth. My husband ordered a few specialty rolls, and he was very happy with both the quality and the generous portions. I also upgraded my regular miso soup to the clam miso soup, and I'm so glad I did. The broth was delicate and flavorful without being overly salty, and the clams added a wonderful sweetness. Even though I was already pretty full, I couldn't resist ordering three pieces of tempura after seeing them come out for another customer. I rarely order tempura in the U.S. because it's often heavily battered, when authentic Japanese tempura should be light, crisp, and delicate. If you've ever been to a dedicated tempura restaurant in Japan, you know exactly what I mean. This tempura was surprisingly close to what you'd find in Japan--light, airy, and perfectly crispy without feeling greasy. For dessert, we shared the green tea Basque cheesecake. It leaned a little on the dry side, but I still really enjoyed it because the matcha flavor was rich, bold, and not overly sweet. We also had a chance to chat with Akira-san behind the sushi bar, which made the evening even more enjoyable. The hospitality and attention to detail really reminded me why I've always loved this place. With so many trendy and expensive sushi restaurants in San Diego these days, this restaurant continues to stand the test of time. The quality of the fish is outstanding, the atmosphere is authentic, and I honestly think the prices are very reasonable for what you get. It's a classic for a reason, and I'll definitely be making the drive back more often.

Definitely a restaurant I would return for some good Japanese food. O Toro and Yellowtail Belly sushi were simply mouth watering. The way both fish just melts in your mouth and the proportion of rice to fish being just right makes a difference so that it gives you the perfect sushi experience. Shrimp Tempura was tasty. Not overly oily and a nice layer of tempura that wasn't thick. But the best is the shrimp! Definitely didn't taste like those frozen ones and the quality of the shrimp (size, texture, and tasty) was delicious. My son ate 2 out of 3 on his own - and he's very picky with shrimp tempura. Ota B was yummy! It was such a balanced meal of flavor, texture and variety. Even the rice itself was good, I kid you not! Definitely a good value to have if you're there. Our kids didn't want anything else but ended up eating two bowls of just udon. All because it was good udon. What can improve (hence the -1 star) is the service. The server wasn't friendly to begin with, probably because we have two young kids in a nice Japanese restaurant, and perhaps because we didn't order too much since we had a delayed lunch but had this place reserved for dinner already.
