OVERPRICED SUSHI ! Reminds me a lot of Las Vegas pricing for all their specialty rolls. For about four rolls, and two appetizers shared between four people and about $100 later, everyone was NOT full. Content but not enough for the price we paid. BEWARE! Their sushi menu online on the website is NOT accurate. Their menu is updated and is completely different and sushi rolls range from $14-$19 each. Although I will admit that some of their sushi rolls are good, and some are just ok. I do taste freshness is some of their rolls, but still overpriced. FOOD: Crispy Albacore Popcorn $8 This dish was ok. The albacore was dry but the sweet sauce that it was marinated in made up for the dish. I'm So Baked Roll This is their most popular dish and now I can see why. This was my favorite dish out of everything and unfortunately it only came in 6 pieces. Each sushi roll is topped with crab and lobster with baked creamy sauce and sits on a slice of orange peel. Yes you can eat the orange peel with the sushi roll and it was amazing. Just melts in your mouth and bursting with flavor. Casanova Roll Crab salad with slices of fish on top. Pretty decent sushi roll. Yoga Roll Spicy scallop sushi roll with jalapenos. This roll was pretty decent as well and has a pretty spicy kick afterwards. Pimpin' Shrimpin Roll Their advertised jumbo shrimp wasn't so jumbo. Looked like every average shrimp to me. Another pretty decent roll. Overall, tiny restaurant in La Jolla with La Jolla's overpriced food expectancy. I had high expectations because it had a 4-star rating on Yelp with a good amount of reviews, plus it was featured on Thrillest. Quite disappointed in the price we paid. Not coming back. read more

OK... this is La Jolla - where it generally costs a mint to eat at a good restaurant. To top it off, sushi places are usually more on the expensive side. Shiku? Wow - I ate a big meal of great sushi. Could I have got the same cheaper? Yeah... probably, but not in La Jolla - or for that matter much of San Diego... I went in April. There were only about 20 people in the place. I'd bet in August - you'd need a reservation - or be lined up out the door, across the street, and down on the ocean walk with the seals. In fact, that's a good way to do this. Go have a great sushi dinner, then walk down along the shore. I would recommend the specialty rolls. The sushi artists know how to blend some simple ingredients for a great taste. I got a couple of them, plus some nigiri. That's actually a lot. Most people wouldn't get that much for 1 person (I was a solo act at the sushi bar). I got to banter with the staff a bit. read more

FINALLY found a legit sushi place in San Diego. I haven't been too impressed with Sushi Deli so I've been on the look out for some fresh sushi at a great price. We went here for lunch which was so much cheaper than expected. The $1 sake lunch special definitely lured us in! I ordered some Nigiri and the Yellowtail and the mackerel were fresh and nicely garnished. We also ordered some classic rolls like crunch roll, cali roll, and a spicy tuna which were all great. The place is clean and the staff was really attentive and friendly. The only thing which was weird was their choice in Pandora station. Some sort of Blink 182 mix which didn't seem to match the food but whatever. 5 Stars. read more

Came here late but caught the tail end of Happy Hour, and all in all, awesome sushi with great views of the ocean within walking distance! I really enjoyed the selection of sushi, especially the interesting spicy combos. My colleague and I ordered edamame as an appetizer which was cooked just right and had a nice seasoning to it. Sorry, but the sushi is not really good in this place. Unless you really like garlic, the edemame garlic just doesn't work. Some things just don't go together. I stopped here twice while in La Jolla for Happy Hour from 3-6pm. The HH pricing is good. I did not buy any of the rolls off the main menu since most of them are about 20 bucks each. I had Tempura Shrimp Hand Roll which was excellent. Also had the Spicy Popcorn Albacore which was delicious. Large Sapporo's were $5. Met the owner too and he has great energy. Another bonus is it is right across the street from Eddie V's and their HH goes until 7pm and you can catch sunset views. read more

Searched for "sushi in la Jolla" and the reason I picked this spot was because it had the most stars. I should have read more of the reviews before committing though. Me and my bf ordered 1) spicy sake fried chicken 2) tuna tango sashimi 3) salmon citrus sashimi and 4) el cartel roll. The sake fried chicken was not spicy, not did it taste like there was a trace of sake, and it was topped with a tangy sweet sauce which you wouldn't expect from the name. After this description, I'm sad to say this was the best thing we ate there that night. The tuna and salmon sashimi was very interesting.. I've never seen sashimi dressed up so much, if the fish was actually fresh, I don't see why they would need to douse it in truffle oil and basil (tuna) or pesto and lemon (salmon). Yes the presentation looked good but I was craving something more fresh and less busy. The el cartel roll was also just interesting. It's topped with what tasted like pickled garlic salsa, which to me, took away from any fish taste that should have been in my mouth. Overall, out of everything we ordered, I would only recommend the chicken, but do not expect what the title says, spicy sake fried chicken, instead, expect crunchy chicken with tangy sweet and sour sauce. Out of the 4 staff members working that were visible, 2 were Asian and 2 were white making it look a little less authentic. Just to throw it out there, I don't consider this to be real Japanese food. It's definitely more of a "fusion" place since the sashimi is doused in sauces and the sushi has the most random toppings. I wouldn't go back but the staff all seemed to be nice. Absolutely bomb. We stopped in because it was literally the closest restaurant to our parking spot, and we were so pleased that I decided to Yelp it! (Almost never do that.) We had been meaning to try this restaurant for a while since each time we walked by the food looked delicious and all the tables were full. We finally came to dinner we ordered miso soups, crispy rice, sushi rolls and nigiri. Everything from the miso soup to the quality of the fish (toro nigiri) was delicious. To compliment the food, our server Chris was incredible. He was responsible for 8 tables and was as attentive to us as if he only had one. He was kind and helpful. We are the type of customers that have a couple of questions and then some more but Chris was patient and really helped us make sure we ordered not just was is popular but what we would like. Nothing to complain about, but nothing spectacular. Tried the Chilean sea bass - buttery and delicious, but small portion and was $$$ I guess sushi is $$ to begin with, but for the money, i felt it was a bit overpriced. Yet again Shiku sushi did not disappoint. It's been 5 months our last journey to this location, yet we have not been able to get this location off our minds. Today we finally succumbed to the craving. The Casanova (yellowtail roll) was incredible with the perfect blend of spice and savor. We got a couple other rolls, one of them being our favorite roll from our previous visit; the Indiana Jones roll (which we still highly recommend). Today we tried the hunny roll, a fresh tasting sweet roll with a nice crunch. As usual, the service was quick, professional and very courteous. Our server today was incredible and so kind. The ambiance of this restaurant is perfect. It's right by the ocean, here in La Jolla. The floor to ceiling windows make it feel light and airy. Overall, our experience here is always a pleasant one.
