Mears even recommended we try ordering a medication online since it might be cheaper that way.

I was given a different doctor than my normal and she was rude, making judgements and not hiding her irritation. I went in a for my puppy's yearly exam only to be told he'd need $2000 in surgery. When I told her I'd need to talk it over with my husband before scheduling she started to tell me about how he's too young to die and trying to scare me into the procedure. I didn't appreciate it. I wasn't turning down doing the surgery, I was wanting to do more research on what he's dealing with and when to schedule the surgery. I would never spend that money without talking it over with my husband. I called later asking to do an antibiotic since she told me it was an infection he had. I was then told it was not an infection but a disease and then other issues that were in his notes that she didn't tell me about. I don't trust them and feel like they were trying to make money off of me versus what is best for my puppy. That being said I am getting a second opinion and going from there. I will not give this office any more money or time and recommend others avoid it.

I wanted to know if they could provide basic costs for their services. She said she could only tell me the routine dental cost of $297 and stated that it is their policy not to disclose prices of their services and that I would need to bring my pets in for a new patient visit $66 each then the doctor can evaluate and provide an estimate based on what was needed. I informed her that I was not requesting an estimate, just to know how much they charge for certain services to compare other hospitals. I already have an exhaustive list with codes and descriptions and was encouraged to compare prices of other hospitals. She again cut me off, restated that she can only tell me the price for a routine dental and to have a good day. I am not sure if Best Friends Animal Hospital stands behind this employee's interaction with a potential consumer, but I would not support or trust any business that does.

I thought it was great to have an office that was close to my home, especially in case I had a sick pet that I wanted to get to the vet quickly or without a long car ride. Unfortunately I discovered that they aren't equipped to handle this and refer out to emergency centers much farther away, even when you call as soon as they open. I was informed that because they are a small practice I should have known to have a secondary vet lined up for when my pet gets sick, despite never being informed of this at any point in the past. This is not something I have ever experienced at any other veterinary clinic and don't know why I was expected to have this understanding. After I had my dog seen elsewhere and got her diagnosis (infection caused by E. Coli) I tried to get ahold of my vet again to get instructions on an upcoming procedure but never received the return call I was promised by office staff. I had to cancel the procedure that had been scheduled months in advance because I didn't know if it was safe while my pet was being treated by the other hospital for the infection. I attempted to address the situation again after the procedure was canceled because I still hadn't received a return call and was told I didn't warrant a call from the actual vet because my dog urinating blood wasn't that serious and my dog was already seen elsewhere (at their suggestion). I was also informed I shouldn't have been told I would get a return call from my request to begin with because they do not have enough staff to guarantee responsiveness. I don't think wanting to ask the actual medical professional a medical question is such a wild expectation from a pet owner, especially when they didn't see them for a current illness and have them scheduled for a procedure requiring anesthesia a few days later. All I wanted was reassurance that it was safe to go ahead with the appointment or confirmation that I needed to wait and reschedule after the infection cleared, but I was denied the opportunity. Update: I received my pet's records and discovered that the front office staff that took notes from my calls (TW) was not the person I spoke to and the notes they left were judgmental and inaccurate. They stated my call requesting to speak to my vet about an upcoming procedure was only a call to say I took my pet elsewhere. There was no note indicating what I truly asked for. They also labeled me "hysterical" on all of my pets files for being tearful and scared on the phone when my pet's urine turned to pure blood. It's clear I wasn't listened to, my concerns weren't taken seriously and I was dismissed for being a concerned pet owner. The office staff is why you can't rely on the practice.

If you love your pets do not take them to Animal Hospital of O'Fallon…read more Putting aside for a moment that the inside of the place is cold, hard, and shabby like an Eastern Bloc morgue, the vet techs cannot complete simple tasks like reading the location of a clinic printed on a past vet record. Apparently, differentiating between "Illinois" and "South Carolina" is not something they teach at vet tech school. But if they can't get basic literacy right, then what else are they screwing up? I wanted to understand what was going on because my cats can't speak for themselves and it's my duty to protect them. Then out of nowhere, the veterinarian, Dr. Schilling, accused me of "insulting" the vet tech. This is a lie, one that goes to the very heart of Dr. Schilling's character (or lack thereof). But even before that, speaking with Dr. Schilling was frustrating because she does not converse like a medical professional or even an adult. If concern for my pets makes me a bad man -- if concern for my pets makes me "insulting" -- then I'm guilty as charged. But I suspect everyone reading this review is guilty of the same. I rounded up my little guys and immediately got them out of that dark and sad little place, away from these insane and unprofessional people. As other reviewers have noted, it's important to keep in mind they'll take your money long before they see your pets. I understand why now.

After a 30 minute drive to this alternate facility, my dog climbed out of my truck as my dog, in digestive distress but walking on his own, and walked into the clinic wagging his tell ready for care. After an hour of waiting and $630 later, my dog was returned to me on a gurney which the nurses had to lift into my truck's back seat via a towel, onto the floor board. A 180 from the dog I walked in with (non-responsive). At that exact moment Banfield called me with recommendations for me to hold him there until 7 p.m. for further care without additional reasoning as to why he would be better there verses me hydrating him at home. During my visit at Hawthorne, I was instructed that my dog was backed up and dehydrated. However, his organs looked great. According to them, they flushed his system. They asked if I wanted to leave him overnight for observation. I stated that I could rehydrate him when we got home (30 minute drive back to residency) if that's all it was. There was no mention of the severity of his case nor actions I could take to increase his chances of survival from either a Hawthorne or Banfield (who had contacted Hawthorne to see if a follow-up appointment the following day would be necessary). During my talk with Banfield while my pet was being loaded, they canceled his follow-up appointment. Outside my residency, Hawthorne called to state they'd retained my dog's leash. I looked and ensured that he at least had his collar. After confirmation, I informed them I'd just pick up a new one verses driving back 30 minutes (prolonging my dog's dehydration). They still did not mention the severity of his case or actions I could take to improve his situation. Upon my return home, my dog was barely responsive and had some stool residue on the towel. He collapsed while climbing out of my truck. I grabbed a bottle of water and gingerly provided him a sip. His breathing went from labored to gurgle. I tried to clear his throat by raising his head and pressing down on his chest, once; he threw up dark liquid and passed away in my arms. Within 10 minutes of arriving home, he was gone. Reviewing and Binging his billing information from Hawthorne, they had administered "Enema Minor". Bing - "A pet enema treatment assists with constipation, dehydration, or bowel irritation caused by the ingestion of spoiled food or foreign objects by flushing out the colon and provide fluid therapy. Cases of dehydration are caused by colon absorption of the fluid and administering enemas can help stop fluid retention if administered every few hours. Dehydration caused by vomiting/diarrhea, an enema reintroduced fluids and electrolytes into the pet, that have been lost. (https://www.vetinfo.com/administering-dog-enema.html) None of this information was provided to me in layman terms. I was only informed that he was dehydrated and nothing to the severity of his dehydration level. My dog was a large breed who, based off of the results rendered when we returned home, he was NOT treated in the manner that would save his life by Hawthorne. He and I were set up for his premature death. A result of veterinarian malpractice/lack of care for the pet but eagerness for them take my money and price gouge me to the extent that I would permit while trying desperately to save his life. My dog was like a four year old son and, now, he is gone. Banfield's policy Plan doesn't even transfer over to Hawthorne, there is no known respective agreement between these two facilities, and they obviously do not communicate well with one another or the customers they serve. I am now locked into paying another 10 months for my optimal plan with Banfield (as it is the lesser of costs between contract and procedures already performed) though I fault them in part for not trying any hydration procedures on my pet prior to sending me to a facility with poor reviews on Yelp for price gouging/misleading customers/death of animals/poor veterinarian procedures and only good reviews over euthanasia of owner pets/letters of condolences. It was due to reading said Yelp reviews that I opted to discontinue my services with Hawthorne as the pet appointment lingered onwards and wanted to ensure the safety of my dog's life verses waking up to a he's dead phone call from Hawthorne the next morning. If you truly love your pet, do NOT take your pet to Hawthorne, regardless of what Banfield states. Do your own search and what's right for your pet. Emergency or not.
