A girl tried to braid my hair but said it was too slippery so she called Chantel. She said she would be there in a few minutes. Well, 10 minutes passed so I decided to leave and come back. Chantel called me an hour later saying she was there. I went and it took 5 hours!! She put 50 pounds of hair in my head and it looked horrible. The other girl was finished braiding and ready to leave. She asked me to get her an Uber even though that was my first time meeting her. For some reason I agreed. The total for the Uber was $18.88 and she had a $20 in her hand and had the nerve to ask for $2.00 back. I told her no plus I needed money for the tip. I ended up Adding money so the driver could get a tip. Ugh!! I was finally done 5 hours later and saw a sign for Zelle. I asked and she said that was for someone else and she didn't have a bank acct because she's an immigrant. I only had $160 in cash. I went across to County Fair but it was closed. She just told me to Zelle it to someone for her. It was not worth $250. My head was on fire and it was just too much hair. I took it down the next day. So mad that I wasted that much money. I love the variety of styles, sure every plane has that, but here they don't send you out looking crazy. Very fast, professional, and friendly service. I love my look every time, and get lots of compliments. The schedules are very flexible, morning, evenings, and even Sundays. Classy place and they keep you entertained. Today I called 6 times each time shantell the owner told me the girl wasn't ready !!!! I made a 2:00 appointment! On Wednesday for Saturday!!!!! At 6:40 after she told me call back in an hour at 5:30 I called she did not answer smh soo unprofessional!!!!! Ladies stop giving these Africans your money they hate America black women that is obvious i just blessed her and wished her the best however karma is real !!!!!!!! First she's rough with her hands and how she talks to you, then she stinks and smells like the Jukskei River. She begins to play Netflix which was cool until she starts to pray Loud as f*ck in my ear, preventing me from hearing the movie. When I tell her I can't hear cause she's loud she rants that she's Muslim and has to pray. Well lady stop braiding and go in the back to pray, then come back and braid my hair. I paid $250.00 for a 15 dollar hair do. I went in on September 1, 2021. Here it is Sunday September 5, 2002. My hair has unrevealed in the back and is coming down. My hair isn't beautiful enough to claim to anyone in the world, I paid 250.00 They haven't seen the last of me though. If I can't get my money back I am returning 250.00 and calling my attorney. There was a hair emergency and Shantel fixed it. I ended up calling Shine because I wanted to get faux goddess locs and I had just left a place that did not take my business seriously. However I went in last night for a consultation and not only was she very pleasant she was able to fit me in today. I was ecstatic because I have wanted this style for a while now. The environment was great and I wasn't getting my hair braided long. My appointment started on time and I felt that Shantel cared for my hair, there wasn't any super tight braiding or yanking. Also, I was in there with someone that has been her client for almost 20 years. That was just one of many loyal clients. I will be there to get a touch up in two months. This was my first and LAST time going to this so-called 'african hair braiding shop'. When I first heard about it, I was so happy since I was going to be getting sengelese twists for the first time in my life. Except when I walked through the door for my very first appointment, I was immediately greeted but when I sat in the chair, I had the most rudest african lady I have ever experienced in my life. Then, she proceeded to ask me questions regarding the price, wanted me to pay extra and even be given a tip for her service. I have never heard of a tip being given to an African hair braiding shop before. This was a surprise. But, I was originally quoted $180.00 on the phone. Intitially, I found this to be strange since I had my hair done in the past by Africans and I have never had this happen to me before. Clearly, this shop likes to mislead people about hair prices. Then, the rude lady began to speak in her native language so loud that I couldn't focus on using their Wi-Fi and it was not a pleasant experience after that. But I was so happy after she left, but the other african lady (Chantal) was very nice and helpful for finishing up the rest of my hair. Also, after I got my hair braided, I only began to discover that I had an allergic reaction to synthetic hair so I had to take my braids down. I wish that they would've told women can break out from using certain braiding weave, that is a negative in my book. Or any solutions to prevent breaking out. Had to call the shop in order to use apple vinegar cidar. This again is not a good thing for a shop's reputation. Overall, I give them 2 stars since they need major improvements from actually quoting people the right price, fixing their wait time, as well as their attitudes. But my hair did come out very nice though. I just would never go back there again. Ladies, please be careful of this shop. I had read too many bad comments thus far. Also, some of the ladies doing hair had very bad edges missing from their own scalp. Let's me know further that they do not take of their own hair properly. Sad to witness. read more

First of all...I didn't rate this shop one star for their work but for their pricing. I went to this shop since march 10...and i went every 3 months. I loved my micros everytime!!! And the women were nice and God fearing women. But its ridiculous how u never get a deal for being a loyal client. They up the prices to atleast $50 more. Always complaining about my hair being too thick!!! And lastly...I've never had a sew un here but as im getting braided i notice the owner will show up late...have clients sitting for hours and leave for errands in the middle of a sew in. This place has the worst service. Over the phone they tell me $200, I get there show them the length I want my neices hair they then say $220. When I go to pick her up they try to charge $250. Her braids took 10 hours and the braids were not even braided to the end. I inquire about the price increase and the stylist says " she told me to do it longer". These braids were not even braided all the way down. The stylist left hair on the ends of the braids and attributed the price increase to the braided hair on the end. 4 days later we had to take her back because her hair was frizzy. We tried to call to speak to the owner, we couldn't. Please don't waste your money!!!!! read more

I was very pleased with the service and product we received from shine african beauty salon. My daughter went in to get the senegalese twist and came out very happy with the result. The process took about 5 hours, the ladies were very professional, and they took great care in making sure her braids looked spectacular before she left. Overall the experience was wonderful. The only negative about the whole thing was that it was a bit costly but other than that I was very pleased. read more

I have gone to Shine multiple times, and I enjoy the experience. Chantel is the owner, she provides great service each and every time, I see her. So far, I've gotten box braids and a few different crochet hair styles. I am very pleased with the service in the salon, and the over all professionalism from all of the stylist in the salon. They are professional, kind, and honest. I am tender headed so it would be easy for me to complain if I had to, but I've never had a complaint. There's a really nice older lady in the salon (not sure, but I think her name is Fantu - forgive me if messed that up), and once Chantel was unavailable to do my hair, so she said she would take me, I told her I was tender headed and could not take pain, so please do not braid my hair tight... she told me that I didn't have to worry about that, and she was right. Not only did not complain the entire time she did my hair, I didn't feel any tension on my hair/scalp, and my braids were beautiful. It's almost 3 months later, and I am still getting compliments. Every braid is the same size (long small box braids) and there's no tension. She did such a wonderful job, I went in last week to make an appointment for a re-do. Yes a re-do, I am very pleased! Oh btw ladies; Fabulous Lashes and Brows Beauty Bar are right next door & they do a really great job with brows, lashes, and tint. I visit them monthly for my beauty needs. read more

I called to get a quote on box braids and possibly set an appt. I was told that starting price was $160 but ultimately depends on the length so I set the appt for the same day. Before the lady started my hair she asked what length I wanted. I told her that I wanted the length priced at $160. She then objected stated that the price starts at $180 and ensuring me that the $160 price was only for kids. I agreed to pay $180. She started on my hair while also giving a disclaimer that her focus was on finishing fast, and ensured me that I would be done within 3 hours, 4 hours MAX. Right around the 3 hour mark, she was done with adding the extensions and proceeded to cut away the straggling hairs from each braid. At this point I noticed that all of my braids were only braided to the halfway mark and the remainder of the hair was just hanging loose. I asked if she intended to leave so much of the ends loose/unbraided and she said YES with conviction. She then proceeded to convince me that this is the ways it's done as if this is my first time getting braids. I explained that while this my first time at her braid shop, that I am no rookie and that I would like her to braid the remainder of my braids as they should be. Immediately there was a shift in her demeanor and she went from EXTREMELY talkative and engaging to a straight up MUTE, so now I'm uncomfortable. Before proceeding to finish the job she asked that I pay now, so I did. After I paid she must have spent an additional five minutes or so pretending the braid the braids further down as they should be, before she started to sweep up the shop to leave. After she dipped my braids I debated within myself whether or not I should tip for her services because I was pleased with the neatness and the size of the box braids, in spite of. I decided to give a $10 tip anyway, although I now regret it since I noticed today that even AFTER I requested that she finish braiding each braid, SHE DID NOT. So now I feel like a fool for paying EXTRA for just half the effort. While doing my hair this same stylist inquired as to why I had never patronized their salon before, when I live in the neighborhood. This was a perfect example as to why I usually drive 50 minutes out of my hair to get my hair braided at North Riverside Mall. I ALWAYS GET MY MONEY'S WORTH THERE! read more

I went in for cornrows. It should have taken about 2-3 hours but instead took 7 because the lady braiding my hair could not talk and braid at the same time. She insisted on holding a conversation with every single person in the shop and I swear she stopped braiding every time she opened her mouth. This was my second time there. I went there years ago and didn't like it but was in a spot this time. Don't do it. They tell you one price and charge another and I made an appointment and when I got there, there was one of their children in the chair getting her hair braided and I was expected to wait. read more

I hated the fact that they quote one price when u get there and when they are half way finished they give you a higher price which sucks. I decided to get my daughter some Kinky Twists..mind you she is only 10 and they wanted to charge me almost the same as it would cost me. We finally agreed on $150/ and her Kinky twists are horrible. These women are horrible....I explained to them that my hair could not tolerate synthetic hair and that I was even willing to purchase the hair if necessary. Instead they used some cheap mix that they swore was human hair. Well it wasn't, my hair broke off all around my head and I had to wear a weave for over a damn year until I could get my hair even again...I should have known better looking at the heads of the ppl that work there, no edges and hair looking unhealthy. Im disappointed in my wait..but I love the way they braid

Theeeeeee worst customer service ever, they false advertise .I went in there last summer 2013 during the evening asking about cornrows. The sign in the window said $60for cornrows. My hair is natural when I went in asked about getting my hair done she told me an hour, I said ok let me go home and wash my hair I don't live far. Mind you my hair was in a puff n they seen how full n think it was. When I returned with my washed hair she gets mad because my hair is long n full , I have a nice grade of hair as well. The lady pulls out the blow dryer n dives in my hair, im like o_o excuse meifu wanted my hair blow dried you should of told me. I mean she didn't part it in s3ctions or nothing didn't apply no oil or anything. I smelled something burning thats when I politely treated her ass. I HONESTLY SHOULD HAD LEFT THEN BUT I DIDN'T TRYING TO GET MY HAIR OUT THE WAY. LONG story short I received horrible customer service the over charged me. My hair was neat but still over charged and I ended up with heat damage to the part she blowed dried. My nationality is Nigerian and african ameircan I hate to say I dislike dealing with these african braidshops I always end checking they ass when start talking about me or others in their language. read more

They schedule you for appointments, and never arrive on time. I scheduled my daughter for 9:30 am and she (the owner)didn't show up until 11:50 am. I called her several times in between and she kept saying she was on her way. I have been a customer since 2009 and will not go back again. Even after reading he reviews I decided to still go. I've been getting braids on and off for about 15 years, when I say this was the worst I mean it!!! I called ahead of time and asked for a certain person. She told me to be there at a certain time and she wasn't even there. So two other ladies had to do my hair, with two different people on my head the twist looked different. By the 3rd day my braids were coming out. Again I called and told them and made an apportionment to get them fixed. Smh I waited two hours. Long story short I had to go to small claims court because the issues just kept happening. The owner purposely left out a chunk of my hair in the front and put edge control on it so that she would not have to take down one of my braids. They have an older woman that works there who is MEAN. She will yell at you if u have any suggestions other than what she is doing. I once got my hair in microbraids and they changed the price half way through because my hair was too thick. Once you quote me, that should be it...not because you tired of doing my hair. They have a saving grace though...there is one woman who always wears a wrap on her head who is amazing.. she's professional, personable and understanding.
