We tried four different items on a Sunday. There were 2-3 other customers while we were there, but they weren't being hit hard or anything. Bulgogi was solid. We all enjoyed it. Squid got mixed reviews. Some loved the chewy texture. We asked for reduced spice and that aspect was just right. BiBimBop was tasty. Bowl was so-so full compared to other places we usually go. The beef shank soup was underwhelming, especially being the most expensive thing we ordered... You'd never know. Bland white broth and noodles with some sliced beef that wasn't fall-apart tender like shanks can be. This was just sliced beef cooked in broth and not very tender either. I can't recommend it. The Saturday specials all sound like my favorites! Maybe just came on the wrong day. We appreciated the casual eating area, and the real dishes. Still, the food would not bring me back. I went to this spot a few years ago and hadn't gone back until recently. The food is good. The portion sizes are massive. We got the pinching pancake which was really good. They have specials on Saturday that I hope to check out. I got sundubu jiggae, jt had good flavor but it was a bit tok much on the seafood for me. I dont think the dish was bad, but not for me. The menu is limited and the seating is small but its still a great spot to get good korean food. The café is inside the store. I really enjoy the store, the man who works there is super friendly and willing to help. I was looking for ingredients to make onigiri for the first time and he helped me find things. Worth the drive! My favorite place for Korean food. Better than my mother's My go-to place for jjajangmyun or black bean noodles. OMG sooo good! I ordered for pick up and had to run some errands. I want to update my review of Seoul Market Cafe since I've been there many times over the years and it is still my favorite no-frills Korean spot in the area. I recently returned to Korea and had some of the best Korean food, and Seoul Market Cafe really hits the spot when I'm craving some jae yuk bokkeum or sundubu stew. The cafe is located within Seoul Market, a small Korean grocery store. The seating area is pretty small, about 8-9 tables, so not great for large groups. You can do takeout though. The menu includes 14-15 items like bulgogi, bibimbap, kimchi jjigae, doenjang, jjajangmyeon, tteokbokki, and more. My personal favorite is the jae yuk bokkeum (spicy stir fried pork), but I've tried the bibimbap, bulgogi, soondubu jjigae, and jjajangmyeon. The jae yuk bokkeum is definitely spicy, but so delicious. The pork is always tender and the portions are huge; I always have leftovers. We also love the bulgogi, which is super savory, slightly sweet, and very tender as well. Meals come with banchan, or side dishes, and you usually get 3-4 and they rotate. We've gotten kimchi, oi muchim (spicy cucumbers), fish cakes, bean sprouts, and more. The rice is purple sticky rice, which is really yummy and always the perfect texture. Ambience and service are no-frills but efficient and quick. I haven't had any long waits for food lately. On weekends they do special features - japchae, kimbap, and vegetable pancakes. Came on a Saturday. Warning they run out of kimbab early so if that's your thing (like it is for my son) then come early. We got the japchae, spicy squid, jajamyung, bulgogi, and sundubo . Everything was delicious and tasted like home cooking. My very picky and judgmental parents love this place. The services was great. The owner is so personable and made everyone feel comfortable and had a great time. There are limited seats, it looks like most people just order to go. Highly recommend! Came with a group of 5 on a Sunday right when they opened. With minimal seating (5 tables or so) coming early or to go orders is probably recommended. We ordered deokbokki, soondubu jjigae, and the jaeyuk bokkeum and all three were amazing. Good portion and they don't skimp out on the seafood / protein compared to other places that load up with mixed veggies. The soondubu jjigae was very hot (temperature) and spicy (the good kind) and with the side of purple rice, it just makes you want to keep on eating. As it's a grocery store / cafe combination and the workers move back and forth, service can take a little while but it's well worth it. Love supporting local small shops as well. Will come again next time I'm in the area for sure. read more

This place is an amazing little hole in the wall. It's basically a store, but they have a restaurant in it and the food is so fresh and authentic. The service is done by the store owners and family members with a few outsiders. All were friendly and English is spoken so you don't have to learn Korean to eat there. lol. Growing up my family would always come here to get some Asian ingredients and their giant jars of kimchi and their Saturday kimpab and japchae. I forget how long ago they built that little cafe area, but it's a little gem if you are craving some homemade style Korean comfort food here in GR. Since I don't eat beef, I ordered the bibimbap with tofu and they charged extra for that. I think that's kind of a lot considering tofu is much cheaper than beef but since it's a family owned business that we have supported for almost two decades, it'll do. read more

Updating to let everyone know I got the black bean noodles and they were incredible. This was a super savory noodle dish with mushrooms, onions, and other veggies. The noodles were heavy and chewy. It reminded me a cross between lo mein and udon. It's a very familiar umami/savory taste so I think lots of people would enjoy this dish. Hands down my favorite spot for Korean food in Grand Rapids. It's low key and the food is straightforward and delicious. My favorites are the Bulgogi (Korean Beef), Jae Yuk Bokkeum (Spicy Stir-Fried Pork) and Jjajang Myun (Noodles in Black Bean Sauce). I'm sure you cannot go wrong with any dish here but I stick with their non-spicy items for my low spice tolerance. I used to live down the street when it was just a market. Now a tiny corner is devoted to making delicious food- Maybe I should move back in the neighborhood. We came at a rush and had to wait over 25 min. But it has downtimes and busy usually means it's good. They kept apologizing to us for the wait, really nice people. You know the food is legitimate when there are ajummas cooking in the kitchen. This is hands down, THE BEST Korean food that you can get in town. The portions are decent, the price is fair, and it tastes just like home cooking. Each dish is served with a side of purple rice and banchan (side dishes). I recommend the Al-Tang, Jamppong (add spice for a real kick) and the Ojingeo bokkum. The Yukaejang is also to die for. Soups are perfect for gloomy/cold weather!
