I haven't visited in a while, but I wanted to meet at an affordable, casual place to talk. This spot is perfect for that. The waitress was very friendly, and we liked the simple local menu. I usually choose the Portuguese sausage. The string beans and shrimp are also popular, but everything on the menu is good. The prices are great. read more

The place we wanted to go to was closed, so I suggested here since it's one of the last old school, local bar, where everyone knows your name...or will at some point. First off, great parking lot! My friends wanted to come here so I tagged along and found out they have karaoke. It's $2 per song so kinda pricey and the microphones weren't the best. The booth seats had large cracks in them so my legs were a bit raw once we stood up. The food menu had some interesting things like vienna sausage, and they were out of fries. We tried the fried somen with green beans deluxe at the recommendation of the server. It was a bit spicy and tasty, but not worth the price. They charge separately for the noodles and the beans/meat topping, so every portion is close to $30. The best thing we got were cheeseburgers. Simple, cheese and mayo, but the burgers were juicy (2 for $8). We also got steak with onions, fried pork chops, and some had drinks (full bar). Yes, it's a hole in the wall, or rather shopping center, but you cannot beat the atmosphere! As soon as we walked in we were greeted by regulars who said "come, sit at the bar, seats open"! The amazing bartender/ (owner I think) took our order and served up drinks and "talk story" about the games on TV & some other local people and things. Food came out and as the reviews said, it was spectacular! We had the famous Green Beans with crispy shrimps, lumpia & spicy fries. Now, I don't know what's in the green beans but man! This is a cute little bar! Really small ...maybe 8 or 9 tables and like 10 bar stools?? It's amazing how many people they fit in this place and everyone is very friendly. Located by in the same shopping center as Starbucks and Walgreens Nu'uanu, ShinshoTei is a hole-in-the-wall karaoke bar with affordable drinks and good food!! It's a small bar with a few bar seats and a couple of tables. Best to go on weekdays if you can or go early on weekends for the least crowded times. The one food item I always have to get is the String Green Beans. If you like spicy, get the String Bean Deluxe! Tossed with a garlicky spicy sauce, it also has opae and spam. So yummy. Honestly, any of the string bean dishes they have are delish. We also like the yakisoba, pork chops and crinkle cut fries! All are flavored and cooked well. Cheers to ShinshoTei in Nu'uanu! We came back here since we enjoyed the food 2 months ago with a group of friends. We had fond memories of the big pieces of fried chicken (hubby from the south), hot crispy crinkle fries ono somen, pork chops. Pork chops and chicken ran out that day. Left hungry. This was not the case today. Disappointed. Crinkle Fries: Only half were crinkle, all not crispy hot, kinda warm. Fried Chicken: Little bits of chicken but hot. String Bean Deluxe over Somen: Super super salty. Spam, opae and lup cheong already seasoned, additional shoyu and salt isn't needed. I'll have to pour hot water over and strain the left overs to enjoy it. Don't like to waste food. Green beans were nicely cooked with a little crunch how I like it. Both times service very fast and pleasant smiley gals. It's a small place - 1 server & 1 bartender able to handle. Shinsho Tei is conveniently located in the Nuuanu Shopping Plaza just mountain of Downtown. There is ample parking and the restaurant is relatively easy to find on the Diamond Head side of the shopping plaza. We popped in because a friend of a friend works there and she wanted to say hi. Unfortunately she wasn't going to be there for another 2 hours so we just had one drink and left during this time I was able to look around the restaurant and see that many of the local regulars sing karaoke from their seat or table looking up and one of many screens that are playing well showing the words. At first glance I thought this place was from Jodie Foster's movie THE ACCUSSED but as soon as the friendly waitress came by to take our order my crazy thoughts had been dispelled. Like for a couple of minutes it sure looked like it though. If you're looking to eat really local food, see the pictures I took of their menu, I think most can be prepared with a can opener & water, then look no further! This could be your bar! read more

This was the place to hangout and still is after many years I return to revisit this place and the vibe is still the same! The food is still amazing, however the price is double what it was 10 years ago, but the portions are worth it. The song selections are still good, especially for old school locals who are always nostalgic. I came here with my sister who used to be frequent regulars and just enjoyed the talented singers and ambiance. Honestly if u are down with their 'in-crowd' and basically 'one of them' I feel like you get better service. They weren't mean to me, they just magically forgot our songs for over 90 mins, and other people sang 20x over us. Plus, you have to pay for the songs. Then once I complained and only asked to be refunded the 3 songs that I now have waited 2 hours for, THEN they wanna play it, so that they dont need to refund me. I didn't wanna sing anymore but kept forcing me. In fact, I left when the 2nd song started sp they skipped it. Thats bullshit. They pissed me off. I had to ask for a drink by flagging the bartender (sitting at the bar) down. I had 2 beers in 2 hours. Seriously? If you are from there... not just A LOCAL, just from Nuuanu, dont go. Its not a place to "find a new spot to bring more friends too." I'm dead serious. My friends bartend and live in the area, and they told me not to chance it. One of my regular karaoke bars! This homely, unsuspecting bar is located on Nuuanu and School St. by the Walgreens and Starbucks. My go-to bars include: food, drinks, and good karaoke. Aaaaand this place has got it all. Must have: the pork chops, French fries, and the String Beans Deluxe. We pretty much always get great service from the bartenders at this amazing little family-run place. Often gets busy with regulars but everyone is friendly. Lots and lots of karaoke. Sunday night I stepped foot into Shinsho Tei with two other friends, J2 and V, for the first time. The establishment is in a shopping center with WalGreens. After entering the bar I noticed several flat screen televisions mounted on the wall. The televisions were used for the karaoke lyrics or to watch a sports game. People are able to sit at the bar or get comfortable in one of several booth seatings. My group opted to sit at one of the booths. Karaoke is $1.00 per song. One of my friends wanted to sing and she ended up passing me one of the microphones to join her for a few songs. Really?!? I'm not much of a singer. Deciding on what to drink I had walked over towards the bar area to see what the establishment has to offer. I noticed there are Redd's Apple Ale, Redd's Strawberry Ale, Heineken, Corona, Smirnoff Ice, Coors Light, and some other choices that comes in a bottle all in a refrigerator. I opted to order Redd's Apple Ale. The pupu menu was given to us to look over. J2 ordered the chicken gizzard as well as the string beans with tofu and opae. V ordered the mandoo. I ordered the lumpia. J2 also order spicy fries afterwards. Customers are able to pay as you order or start a tab. If one chooses to start a tab...make sure your tab is $20.00 or more in order to use credit card. Otherwise make sure to have extra cash on hand in case your tab falls below the $20.00 limit. First time to this place and I really had no idea this was a local bar. Ive grown up in the Nuuanu area and all this time, I thought it was a Japanese restaurant all this time. Shinsho Tei is a local neighborhood bar. It offers a variety of alcohol and priced not to bad. You can tell once you enter that this place has its regulars and that they enjoy the servie they receive from the owners/servers. The food is awesome. I had the string beans deluze....which was string beans with longanisa, luncheon meat and baby shrimp in a hot sauce. I love the hot sauce so those who know me, know that I would dip everything in the remaining sauce. Karaoke, is limited in choices. It does have the songs that most people sing but if you are looking at singing the new and current songs, you will not find them here. Parking is plentiful as the shopping center that it is in just change hands and many stores have closed down. Im not sure how long more Shinsho Tei will be around as the shopping center is slatted to become home of a new Walgreens. read more

Went for the first time this past weekend, a FANTASTIC local bar with amazing local atmosphere. It is family owned and operated and it truly shows in the ambiance and experience. Went on a busy Friday night and everyone inside knew each other and created a great family-like atmosphere that first-timers like me will no doubt experience, they were all extremely welcoming and lively. I am a veteran Waikiki bartender so the prices here are NO comparison, insanely well priced food and drinks here with top quality from the kitchen. So awesome to see a great local menu in a bar with all food items executed well. First time my husband and I came here (about a yr & a half ago), we were welcomed with open arms, waitresses took very good care of us & we met the owner as well (who I must say is a loving and beautiful person). Food, on point and worth the price. String beans with shrimp is amazing, pork chops are to die for, Mandoo is good and sashimi is Heaven. Parking is good and Walgreen is near. Plenty of Aloha here and karaoke is cheap and resonable. They are like family, watching out for everyone and making sure their customers are taken cared of and fine. Place is clean, they do have their happy hours, & not to mention, you will notice someone in there that you know. Local artists come to enjoy as well.
