We went again for the second time this year and for exactly the same meal. I wanted to see if the improvement in the previously horrible coleslaw had stuck. Shipwreck's serves excellent shrimp that are large, fresh, plump, lightly battered, fried perfectly and salted just right. We again shared the order of calamari that is billed as an appetizer, but we split both plates, so it was part of our meal, and it all was plenty of food. They do a very good job on the fried food that we had and there is much more that tempted me. I don't think that the slaw was quite as good as what we had the previous time, but still a bug improvement over what it was a couple of years ago. Again, I don't know if this was a conscious change or if they are just very inconsistent. I'm pretty sure we will remain customers and I am increasing the rating because they do serve excellent seafood. The slaw cannot be the driver for the rating. read more

We visited Shipwrecks for lunch while on the OBX for my birthday week. Fried oysters, my favorite, were available (and delicious!). The restaurant was running a bit lean with staff but our server was attentive and helpful. There's a lot on the menu to choose from -- we had the crab dip appetizer as well as the fish bites. There's a bar and lots of TVs. There's also a small area in the restaurant with a great t-shirt selection, stickers, and beanies. We have a list of OBX favorites we always come back to, and this one will go on the list. read more

The hostess told us 15 minutes for "first available" and we weren't seated for almost 45 minutes. The restaurant wasn't overly busy either. We waited outside and were told they would call us and never did. We only got seated once my husband went inside to check on the status. So we are pretty sure they forgot about us. I ordered the Steamin Beaman and got a cluster of crab and some steamed shrimp. The shrimp barely peeled off and they didn't devein the shrimp. That's the least you can do! The shrimp tasted like it had been frozen or something previously. Unfortunately, I would never go back to eat here. The key lime pie was the only edible item we tried and it was just mediocre. read more

This place has it all!!! Great burgers! The soft shell crab was perfectly cooked (also huge). Pair the jumbo soft pretzel with their crab dip (also a large portion)! Also a great selection of salads. Excellent food meets excellent service! My wife and I stopped in here on our second night in the Outer Banks. We started with the Kitty Hawk Kalamari. It was a generous helping, light, and not drenched in oil like I've seen at some places. For the entree, I ordered the Seafood Pasta, and my wife ordered the fried Mahi and chips from the daily specials menu. Our server heard that it was my birthday, so she topped off our meal with the key lime pie. She even put a birthday candle in it and sang to me! The owner stopped by and spent a few minutes with us. So a little bit of a mixed bag on our end. Shrimp and corn chowder was very nice. Thick and sweet with good flavor. Hush puppies some people liked them and some thought they were over cooked. Crab Rangoon were small and a bit dry. Not a favorite. The. Scallops were good. Cooked well and seasoned just right. The coleslaw was not good. The bang bang tacos were pretty good The cheesy Mac was good nice portion. Maybe too much bacon The broiled seafood plate. The shrimp and scallops were good. Cooked nice. Shout out to Kellye at Shipwreck's for turning a negative review into a positive. (But with room for improvement). After being seated, we waited over 10 minutes with no sign of service in sight. Tables around us were taken care of, but not ours. I went to the hostess station to speak to Kellye, and she made it right. Took our orders, checked on our drink status, delivered our food. My Husband said his broiled scallops were wonderful, my steak unfortunately not so much.Beers were cold, the draft selection extensive. Did not have a great experience once we were at the table .Our server never offered any plates or napkins . So we had to eat our appetizers from the mail plate and had to get up, walk up to ask for napkins . Our first stop on our way to the hotel in Nags Head. The reviews and packed parking lot convinced us to stop. The food was fresh and delicious. Service was great. I wanted to thank my friend for having me as her guest for the week and we both love oysters, so we googled oyster bars in the area and Shipwrecks had good reviews. Sadly, our experience was not so good. The sapphire martini I had was absolutely fantastic, perfectly shaken with just the right amount of vermouth but the dozen steamed oysters we ordered were literally horrible. We had specified, "lightly steamed" and although they came out quickly, they were not even warm, nor were they cold....They were also super small, dried up like raisins, and there was literally NO briny liquid in the shells with the oysters. I suspect that they had been sitting in the steamer for hours when we ordered them. However, we were both starving so we ate them anyway; no surprise, but they weren't good. Then, based on the reviews we had read, we decided to try the fried oysters...what a difference! Fried, they were plump and delicious. They also came out quickly, but they were obviously made fresh. The battered coating was crispy and light and the oysters were served with a deliciously spiced version of tartar sauce. We were happy enough with the whole experience (staff was friendly and attentive) until we got the bill...$23 for a dozen (12) steamed oysters? Obviosly, steamed oysters are not their forte, so that seems excessive, given that other places nearby charge less money and give you more (and much better) oysters for less money. Disappointing. Didn't try any other food so all I can say is stick with the fried oysters! read more

The food was good, I had the seafood pasta and the sauce was great! My boyfriend got the admirals platter and they mixed up his request for how he wanted it cooked, but were quick to fix it. It's slightly pricey for what it is, but overall we had a nice time. I'm sure in the tourist season it's nice sitting outside but we were inside this time. We don't plan to return here.. it's a bummer because they have a good menu - there are lots of items for a variety of people, particularly with an emphasis on seafood. Some other pros are their draft selection, my mom loved their Long Island iced tea, and the fact that they have some outdoor seating. It appears to be dog friendly too. What we didn't like was firstly the service. Our waitress was friendly, but there were a lot of mistakes. She didn't return with an update on our drinks (one of which was super delayed and ended up being out of stock), messing up requests for sauces on the side, and also miscalculations on our final bill. I had to head inside to ask the bartender after 15 minutes of not receiving my drink. The food was also mediocre. I ordered the shrimp burger, which is usually such a good menu item, but theirs had some kind of overwhelming taco or chili seasoning. The fried oysters were heavily battered too. They claim to offer gluten free bun, charged $3.49 for a gluten free bun substitution, told by manager at pick-up that bun was gluten free, bun was wrapped separately (no other burger in our takeout order was, so this appeared to be a gluten free bun) -- an allergic reaction later we realized the bun was NOT gluten free. Inside, almost every inch was decorated for the holidays, so it was cool to feel Christmas And look at the Ocean!!!! we had Admirals Platter and Captn Johns Oysters... these lunch plates look like dinner plates!
