We shared the onion rings for an appetizer-- FYI the small size only comes with 5 onion rings-- will order a full size next time! They were really good and the ranch that comes with is top notch. I ordered the chicken fried steak for dinner. Huge portion but could do with a bit more flavor. Service was fast and friendly. We saw all the reviews and decided to give it a try. We are glad we did! We had to wait 20 minutes for a table but that showed us how popular it was especially NOT being a chain restaurant. My husband got the pork tenderloin dinner and said it was wonderful. I wasn't Hungary enough for the chicken fry steak so I got breakfast. Very good. Over all I would say a very good place to eat. Sunday brunch is always jammed. I recommend going early to beat the church crowd, but even then, Shirley's does a good job of getting people in and out. Part of the charm at Shirley's is that it's definitely packed with regulars. Customers greeted by name. Catching up with customers and their families. They do a decent job with standard breakfast. I'm talking eggs, potato and HUGE portions of meat. Pancakes are also pretty tasty. The coffee will definitely perk you up. Stay away from the eggs benedict (the sauce is nowhere near homemade). If you're looking for a more up market menu, go elsewhere. If you're looking at a basic breakfast at a decent price, pick Shirley's. read more

This is a cute little 50's diner, booths are decorated honoring a 50's star like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, etc. The owners are very friendly here and on certain Sunday's you will be pleased to have Dave Webber working along with the staff. Everyone is great and very attenative. Best breakfast for good ole home cooking, the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs are the bomb! Huge, and never grisely!! Hash browns are homemade and fried crispy, the portions are very large. For Lunch try the Hot Turkey Sandwich, freshly made turkey daily(no processed turkey here) it's the real thing! Excellent choice while we traveled. Great service. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich, it easily could feed 2 people. Fries and onion rings are hand battered. Our table had breakfast and lunch items, nothing disappointed us. We went back the next day for lunch. Definitely need to try this place. read more

I've been to Shirley's a handful of times. The food has always been good to great. The service however is hit or miss. We've had service that is great. The last time we were there it appeared that we were a burden. It's a diner... the food is good... the service is average. I'm sure we'll be back at some point. First time here, got seated next to a huge family with a screaming baby even though there were open tables throughout the restaurant. Lost in a back corner, we were grateful to get a second cup of the overly burnt brown water they called coffee. The hostess had the manners of a twelve year old kid, no greeting, no asking if the table was ok, no thanking us on the way out. Wow, this is a family diner? The food was mixed, the fried chicken was delicious but the breakfast food was lackluster at best. I will admit, upon arriving I had second thoughts. The diner is located in a strip mall that looks old, we'll call it old. The average age of the patrons I saw was nearing 70, which usually indicates bland food. I forged ahead though, putting my trust in my fellow yelpers. The risk paid off! I had one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was huge and almost too much to eat. The fires were just frozen fries and nothing to write home about. The onion rings, came on the burger, were crunchy and delicious. I saw the meatloaf being delivered to another table and I almost fell over. This slab of awesomeness was inches thick, think 3-4 inches. Covered in what looked like gravy that inspires greatness. I may be returning for dinner so I can try it tonight. If you're in Omaha, you are denying yourself the right to pursue happiness if you do not hit this place. Here we go. It was my birthday and my brother came in from out of town. We played golf in the morning and he asked where do you want to go for breakfast? I said Shirleys Diner. The food is good but service this day needed help. We sat down directed by a guy behind the counter. Usually, I dont care about the water but after golf we could have used some. No one came to our table let alone acknowledged our existence. After 5 min I asked the masked waitress next to our table for 2 waters please. She looked at me, didnt say a word and walked away. I thought that was a little odd but oh well i'll get up as ask. I went to the guy behind the counter, who was doing nothing by the way, could we have "2 waters please". A very rude and snotty short waitress butted in our conversation and blurted out some nonsense. She wasnt even in the conversation. Very rude! So i went back to the table and the guy brought out 2 waters. We waited some more....well before I asked for the waters a 4 top came in and immediately got 4 waters. A gal walks in and got a water.....we didn't even get greeted by our waitress. If a waitress would have walked by and said Hello that would have been just fine. We got up and walked out. For a diner, this is really good. You have to try the onion rings --- they are large, but the best part is the tasty batter and make sure you get the ranch sauce. These are just like the bloomin' onions - only in large onion ring form. Delish! Hubby had chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn. He loved it. Again, fab batter on it. I had the Shirley's burger with ham, cheese, onion, pickles and the thousand island dressing. Burger has the charcoal flavor which I like, but it could have been jucier. Salad is just average, the stuff out of a bag with a few croutons and dressing on the side. It was pretty large though and I couldn't finish it, since I needed to leave room for the main entrée. There are no milkshakes, otherwise we would have ordered one. Husband had the root beer float. Dessert was a fried twinkie with two scoops of ice cream - Wow! Cozy diner comfort food served with lots of smiles. My husband is always on the hunt for a good plate of biscuits and gravy, which is how we came across Shirley's. We stopped by on a Wednesday at noon and were happy to find that they serve breakfast all day long. I like the vintage decor and noted that it is all arranged very smartly, not like some places where the decor has haphazardly taken over the space. The seating is also laid out very nicely, not too crammed, with comfortable booth or table seating options. Maybe it's funny but I also noticed that even the menus were arranged and printed very neatly. This all was a great first impression. The waitress immediately brought our drinks and was patient as we lingered over the menu options, even pointing out the customer favorites and daily specials for us. The food arrived to the table in little time at all. It looked great and tasted amazing! Our waitress returned a few times to ensure our waters were filled and our food met expectations, she was very nice and I enjoyed chatting a bit with her. When she asked if we thought we might be back, we replied, absolutely! They have a side room for large/private parties. Mini tin pails of crayons and legos for the kids as well as a chalk wall that reads "you can color here!", those are nice touches. read more

This was a great find locally. Loved the atmosphere. The staff was fairly friendly. A great change from our local first watch. Loved the traditional breakfast that was available. We found this place by chance and glad we did! It was very busy, which we took as a good sign. The wait wasn't terribly long and the servers were friendly. I wasn't a big fan of the pancakes, as they were a tad dry and I had to wait a long time for them. We were both done eating our other food well before the pancakes arrived. Found this place on Yelp on our drive across the country while we stopped in Omaha. When we pulled up the parking lot was full which was an immediate good sign, then we walked in and only waited about 2 minutes then we were seated. Our waitress came out to us quickly and had taken our drink order which also came out pretty fast (2 coffees 2 waters). I ordered hash browns covered in gravy with an egg and bacon, my husband ordered an omelet and hash browns, and pancakes. For a small place that was busy, I felt like the service was good and our food came out in a timely manner, plus it tasted pretty darn good! Been here a few times. The place is a cool little dive. The service is hit and miss, but always friendly. The food is very good, ample portions and reasonably priced. Tuesday's special is Meatloaf! Do not order the patty melt worst ever most of the grease from the kitchen came with the patty melt. It was not marble rye , the Swiss was not real true Swiss. Waited forever to be seated but it's okay since it's Sunday brunch time. Then we waited for 15 mins until someone come ask us what we wanna drink. Then another 15 mins to finally get our coffees. Sooo amazing! Definitely not the place to go for healthy, vegan, gluten free lifestyle advocates, this place is on the next level of unhealthy, and oh so delicious, comfort foods! Greasy, giant piles of food, on the cheap. One entree is at least 2 meals worth, at under $10 per person. 2 people can get 2 appetizers, 2 meals, and a dessert, for under $30, and go home with 1-2 more meals worth of leftovers, trust me, I've done it.
