I heard this place was good for breakfast and it was! Crowded even for a day when the temps were -5. It is very much an old time cafe feel. Pancakes are huge and fluffy! My son loved the biscuits and gravy saying they were some of the best he has had. I got my eggs over hard and wish I had gone with over medium. The hash browns were well flavored and the coffee smooth. Bacon cooked just right. Good prices for the amount of food you get. Early Bird specials until 8am. It's been more than 6 years since we've been to AJ's, and we used to go there often, but with lots of good breakfast places in Omaha there's competition. Today we ordered DoorDash breakfast. Bookguy ordered full biscuits and gravy with hash browns and two eggs over easy. I ordered the veggie breakfast casserole. Bookguy thought the biscuits were a little weird, but the gravy and eggs were good. I snagged a bite of biscuit without the gravy and I enjoyed it. Maybe it has something to do with the soft texture. My casserole was delicious. I especially liked how brown the hash browns were-- that almost burnt flavor was just right. Mine also had an enormous, fluffy pancake. Of course because it was DoorDash, nothing was as hot or crispy as it would be in person so we don't hold that against them. AJ's still has a quality product, generous portions, and reasonable prices. read more

We had clothes going at the laundromat across the street and had a good thirty minutes to grab a bite. Seated right away at the bar next to 2 older gentleman. Within 5 minutes the order had been placed and the food had arrived. SO MUCH FOOD! Please see photos of SO MUCH FOOD! Small Town feelings all around this visit. Most guests at the bar with us were greeted by name. Someone anonymously paid our ticket, so we paid it forward. Basic food, service is used to local return customers. We were traveling and referred to this breakfast spot. Think more small town cafe for the food and environment. We wanted to try local. We sat and ordered what was thought to be a casserole (menu stated it) and was actually a scramble. It was more on the dry side and hella hash browns scattered but the egg was a scrambled egg style filled in sparse. The waitress was more on having an expectation of knowing what you wanted immediately when she approached and was not interested in offering suggestions. You could tell she was used to return locals and not very patient with newbies. When it came time to pay, it was an all cash establishment. No sign at the entrance or on the door, which would have been appropriate. It was at the cash register, not a point of sale, register and we were sat no where near it. I was paying and had my back to that area, so never noticed it. We are used to digital pay but it would have been appropriate for the waitress to let us know at the time of order since we made it clear it was our first visit. She was instead short and hurried. It was an older gal and just finished the experience for us. We were directed to an ATM for cash and luckily USAA does not charge ATM transaction fees. A wonderful place for a good home cooked breakfast! We stopped in and got on the list (on a Saturday morning) - they were busy but we were seated pretty quickly. The staff was amazing!! First of all, the hostess taking names is also a waitress (wow) and was so nice, our waitress gave us some great recommendations on the menu, and overall we just felt very welcomed. Prices are great - they have lots of combination deals and you get a great bang for your buck (a HUGE pancake as an option vs big ol pieces of toast included in your meal?? yes please). Pretty standard breakfast fare. We ordered through DoorDash and the food arrived a notch above room temp. The doordash driver got there on time, but had to wait. The restaurant kept pushing out the time, I'm assuming that meant they were behind. Everything we ordered was OK but not great. The eggs were not seasoned and were over cooked in my opinion. Tasty sausages, and a good flavor to the gravy. But otherwise nothing else really stands out. read more

It's a very popular spot. The early bird's special looks worth it, and the AJ's classic was great! I don't usually eat pancakes, and I'm glad I ordered it this time. The servers were attentive and regularly checked on us despite being busy. The place was pretty rustic and clean. The seats were a bit old with scratches in the leather but still soft. Had Dr appt on the other side of the world (well, 90th and Dodge) and wanted to do breakfast after. AJs was a little north, never been, so decided to try. Glad we did. Took Sue with me and got right in about 9 AM on a Tues. Two tables available at that time. Friendly staff and wait people. Friendly customers, too. Couple behind, finished, saw our car jackets and had to talk about cars. Don't know if they were regulars or not but that was kinda neat. Sue ordered Cinnamon-Raison French Toast with a link sausage. Said it was delish but couldn't finish. Too much. I had Western Omelet with pancake. Now, if you don't want your Omelet stuffed full of goodies....don't go here. Bulging with Ham, Onions, Peppers, Cheese. Before I ordered, I asked server if pancake was big. There was a choice of toast, too. She said, "Yes". She wasn't wrong. Filled the whole plate. My kind of hash browns also. Shredded and crispy. Something I haven't seen for a long time...container of sugar on the table. You know, the old fashioned kind you can grab and pour your amount. Didn't use but thought that was unique, along with the usual condiments...ketchup, hot sauce, syrup, yes, syrup was on the table. Bottomless coffee, even tho they were busy. Good place. Was not expecting this quaint little cafe to be so good. Service was phenomenal. Minus the small setting the wait was minimal. Had the veggie omelet, 2 massive flapjacks and hash-browns. One thing that caught my attention was a customer asked for a to go box and the employee asked if they wanted syrup to go as well. Not needed but I guarantee that type of service will not go un noticed. The food didn't stand out but it was good. Although it was really busy, service was good and everything went smoothly. We were seated right away. Coffee was refilled consistently. As diners go, AJ's is ok. Reasonably priced breakfast, served hot and fast. The hash browns were a little greasy and the chicken fried steak could have been a little more crisp. The gravy was super basic white flour gravy, nothing for some extra oomph. The waitress suggested I get a pancake. So I did, if was a pretty good pancake, way better than IHOP. So if you are in the mood for a good old fashion pancake without the drama (no fillings, special sauces or toppings), you will want to come here. And they have their own branded syrup. Also they have hot sauce not tobasco which I also appreciated. The atmosphere reminded me of going to Howard Johnson when I was a kid, the waitress calls you Hon, and there was a lot of white haired diners. read more

We almost left when we peeked in the door and saw A LOT of people waiting. The waitress ran out and told us the wait wouldn't be long. We only waited maybe 5 minutes. Ordered our food and received it in less than 5 minutes. Dining room, counter area and kitchen were really clean. Impressive service and everyone there seemed to want to actually work there. No cooks screaming or yelling in the back. And the food was great. Large portions and delicious. It is cash or check only so be prepared for that. OK, full disclosure, I wouldn't have ordinarily thought to come here. I bought a buy one get one card from the Omaha World Herald and AJ's was on it. That being said, I would absolutely go back (in fact I already have once since my initial visit). Straight up, Old School mom and Pop joint. Nothing fancy but the menu is thorough and delivers basic but terrific breakfast and lunches. I couldn't complain about anything that I ordered and tried both visit. I took two different people and they both agreed that it was a surprising little gem. From eggs and pancakes and excellent hashbrowns to burgers and hot beef, they delivered. The only hold up, is that when it's cold their front door goes directly into the parking lot - - and inside comes a blast of arctic air. Don't say I didn't warn you to sit as far west in the café as you can, counter space is there and that's right next to the kitchen! We were introduced to AJ's Café as part of the Omaha World-Herald's Breakfast Card deal. This was the first restaurant on the card that we chose since it was close by and we had never been there before. We have probably driven by it many times and never knew that it existed, since it's sign gets lost in the other strip mall business listings. When we got there, we chose a booth and I was a little apprehensive about the service because there was only one server on duty and one person in the kitchen, but that apprehension was quickly put to rest. Rachel quickly came to our table with menus and cups and asked if we wanted coffee. She quickly returned with fresh coffee and water. The refills were continuous and hot. They have a fairly extensive menu ranging from French toast and pancakes to hashbrown casseroles, omelets, various types of scrambled eggs, various types of burritos, to build your own dishes. Between 6:30 and 8:00AM they also have an Early Bird Special menu with reduced prices. I ordered their Husker Hashbrown Casserole which contained a large order of hash browns with your eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, onions, and mushrooms cooked right in, and covered with a 2-cheese blend. It was served with some of the best sourdough toast that I have had. It was well prepared and served hot, which again, with one person in the kitchen impressed me. Lois had their Cinnamon Raisin French Toast with a side of bacon. The toast was thick cut and cook just right. She forgot to ask to have her bacon cooked extra crispy, so I got to sample one piece, and I liked it. By the time we left, our plates were empty, and we were so full that we planned our next meal to be a light dinner. For me the only negative, was that you don't have access to Wi-Fi while at the restaurant. They also don't accept credit or debit cards, so if you don't want to pay ATM fees, bring cash. For me the restaurant is definitely a keeper and I feel comfortable recommending it to my friends. read more

I don't live in Nebraska, I live in California, Los Angeles...so maybe things are different in the Midwest .... Cash only. Annoying & in your face bible stuff hung on the walls reminding you to pray...come on...really? The "scrambled eggs" come out flat like they were poured into a pan and steamed and then slowly laid onto then plate, like an omelette. Literally the worst eggs I've had ever, and I was in the Army and ate some crazy Army eggs, but these win for worst eggs & they were a gray color. Bacon was greasy and thin. Paper thin. Hash browns frozen from a bag. Coffee was terrible. Again maybe a Midwest thing but I've never seen butter so yellow on toast in my life. Good thing it was cheap because I hardly touched it.
