Wow! This place is as good as people say! We just moved to the area and we were craving sushi. I searched yelp for the best sushi place and was pleasantly surprised that this was highly rated as it's less than a mile from our house. We stopped in on a Friday evening and it was pretty busy. We only had to wait though about 10 minutes for a table so that was fine. Our waiter was stretched a little thin but as he was bringing our water to us he said that the sushi chef was running behind due to some large orders and then we could expect a 45 minute wait for Sushi. We had our heart set on sushi so we ended up ordering some appetizers. My husband must've been very hungry because he ordered edamame, tempura shrimp, and some thing like a spring roll as just appetizers for us. The appetizers were good and our sushi arrived. I think I think we like the best is that the scalloped had tasted very very fresh. We both love sashimi and like to get scallops wherever we go for sushi. I also ordered a side of tobiko and it was served in a cup carved out of cucumber. Overall it was a very good experience and we're looking forward to coming back again! read more

Waiter told us they don't have enough glasses for the wine so we had to wait one hour to get a glass of Sake. Extremely slow service. I have been to Shiro countless times and used to love it, but lately it's been falling off. Was in the area and wanted to give it another shot... A friend and I came here for dinner on a Friday at 8:30. After being seated our server came over to say she would be back with water, plate setup and to take our drink order. 15 minutes went by before she returned, I looked at my watch because it had been a while, so long we were contemplating leaving. We ordered drinks and appetizers. Our appetizers came before the cocktails, and she only brought soup for one of us (we ordered one for each) she said she would return with it. Deep fried potstickers were "kid temperature" as my friend said (lukewarm). Took another 5+ minutes to retrieve miso soup, and bring our cocktails. By this time the restaurant had cleared out a lot. Sushi was just OK, I had remembered the first time I tried the surf & turf roll and how good it was, this time, meh. I was so disappointed. We've heard a lot about Shiro and it was highly recommended to us by several people. The ambiance was decent. The service was okay. We tried the pork belly which wasn't crispy and nothing like I'd expect. The lobster spring rolls came out and they were on top of mashed potatoes, which was confusing and they were very greasy. We got several rolls and I got two pieces of sashimi. The sushi was very underwhelming. The smoked salmon sashimi was the highlight of the night for me. That piece I'd get again. For us, we've had much better sushi for half the price at other places. We'd go back for the ambiance if we were invited out to dinner. When I ordered sushi part tray from this place , I wasn't so impressed by the quality. Tuna was really red color and didn't taste great. Nori tasted stale and hard to chew. But on my second try , I ordered chef's choice special and all sushi tasted really good. Salad was fresh , loved their dressing. When I ordered it first time , restaurant was just starting opening from shut down so maybe they didn't have good quality sushi or skilled chef. Checked out Shiro for the first time for a sushi feast! This is such a cool old place, a home that was converted into a restaurant. They say the building is haunted! Back to the food, the sushi was absolutely delicious. Everything was extremely fresh and all the flavors went together so well! We ordered a lot of sushi so I don't really remember what we got all I know is the wonder women was my favorite! The only reason for 4 starts is because the place seemed really dirty. Not like surface dirty but like so old that the walls were changing colors. This place can definitely use an update. read more

I absolutely love this place and their sushi! Shiro is in an old manor type house off of the north side of 9 mile road just a hop skip and jump east of Novi Road. It's known as a haunted house but I've never met a ghost there... a little disappointed but I'll have to keep trying! The best waitress there is May! She is really cool and knowledgeable about the menu. Food is served rather quickly too! They have a full bar with top shelf for my fellow what's sushi without some booze folks. The sushi is really good. Their chef Mike left which is unfortunate because he was magnificent with sushi! But my experience with Shiro is always great and fun. They have upstairs seating and downstairs can be in the bar area or in a room off to the left side. Go to the bar area or upstairs, atmosphere is way better! If on w date, definitely upstairs. As for the sushi, get the Wonder Woman Roll! It's awesome! The Las Vegas Roll is good too and we always like to ask for a chef special roll to make for us! I have to admit that the food was stellar in flavor. However, my low marks of this restaurant is based on what I saw behind the scenes. Food taste excellent, food service may moderate because I don't know what our server's area was: attentive at first but couldn't find her when we wanted to checkout. We were in the "sushi" room where we had a direct view of the "sushi" chefs. I put sushi in quotes because I did not see them prepare any products by hand, but after a roll had been presented from the on site kitchen. We were eating later in the evening, what I saw at the end of the night by the "sushi" chefs disturbed me greatly. One of the "sushi" chefs kept bending down and eating products with the same gloves as he was preparing customers' food with. Wow, what an inappropriate handling of customer food. I went to the restroom and made myself vomit so I reduced my chances of food poisoning. I took my leftovers in case I became ill and to have proof if I did. I did not get sick, but I know this activity is frowned upon in food safety and the county health department. Be wary of this establishment if this "chef" remains employed by shiro. Why am I so cognizant of this activity. I am aNurse Practitioner who looks out for inappropriate activity in food service because I have had food poisoning from other establishments. I will not return and I will utilize Sushi Zen in Brighton, MI where I have not observed the same activity. read more

Cool atmosphere, okay service, subpar sushi. 4/10. Would not recommend. The restaurant is in a really cool 1920s mansion, it's easy to spot and has a big lot for parking. The building and simple decor is very nice, it's a very relaxing and somewhat intimate atmosphere. Restaurant was not busy, we saw 3 wait staff each cover an area of the 1st level dining tables, they were friendly. There were five people standing behind the sushi counter, only one making sushi. They had a selection of cocktails and some beers, no N/A drinks. We ordered five sushi rolls, 2 of which were your regular sushi rolls, spicy tuna and spicy salmon, 3 were of the House Specials, Las Vegas, one with soft-shell crab, and one with fillet mignon. The sushi was very subpar, the Busch's by my house has better sushi. To say we were disappointed would've been an understatement. Rice was very very soft, very loose, no flavor, it honestly looked and tasted like day old rice. Not sushi grade rice. There were onions in the spicy tuna that did not belong there, and the overuse of Sriracha on almost every roll was very weird. Basically there were no original umami of the rice and seaweed in any rolls we had, rice, the star of the show definitely murdered the show. Everything was very blend besides the overuse of Sriracha. The rolls produced does not meet restaurant level sushi. They're only marked as $$ on Google, it's about $20-30 per person without drinks. They also up charge 3% for paying non-cash. 4/10. We went here for Valentine's Day date night. It was easy to get a reservation at a popular time and I came because of the good yelp reviews. The atmosphere is very unique for sushi as it's in a old mansion. The drink menu has large selection of speciality cocktails. I recommend the raspberry cheesecake drink. The sushi roll selection was what we went for and I've never had sushi with jalapeños added so that was a fun twist. Recommend for a date night! read more

An American colonial mansion, furnished with a mix of IKEA lamps and a chandelier, (which restored is a cool story and worth maintaining for historical value) that serves Japanese sushi but played Italian music while we were eating. I was confused. The sushi itself is fine. All very tasty though somewhat overpriced. Maybe you're paying for that unique identity crisis while you eat. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place. For a busy night it runs very well and delivers pretty good food. What a great menu. Came here for V-day this year. I had crab rolls, tuna spring rolls with the guac was so good, the ginger salad was good, not so fond of their sunomon, cukes were too thick for my liking. Restaurant is in an old mansion, interior doesn't quite fit for a Japanese themed restaurant, but whatever. Think they should have a kid friendly section, especially the loud ones where their parents let them scream to their hearts content, they should all be relegated to their own padded room if you ask me. Been wanting to try this place for a while and it's always so busy on the weekends, but we finally got in! It's like an old mansion and we walked upstairs to be seated. Atmosphere is very loud. Sarah was our waitress and she was great. Very helpful and best customer service. She brought complimentary edamame when our appetizer was taking a long time. Sushi was very reasonably priced. Only suggestion is the soy sauce is not my preference. I prefer Kikkoman and the sauce here is a lighter brown. The dinner entrees were good too. Overall, a good place and we will be back! read more

Wow. Wowowowow. This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. I was wildly impressed. The restaurant itself is in an old colonial mansion. Absolutely beautiful and lends itself to an intimate feel. White tablecloths, small tables, and smiling staff make the place feel cozy. The service was great. Ricky was friendly and attentive, and the rest of the staff was helpful as well. The food is some of the best food I've ever been lucky to experience. From the appetizers to the sushi to the dessert; all of it was marvelous. I strongly recommend the dynamite appetizer; it's unlike anything I've ever had and was remarkable in every way. This restaurant is way out of my way from where I live but because I was so extremely impressed, I will try to revisit as often as possible. read more

I met a friend for dinner at Shiro for good sushi, wine and reasonable prices. It's exactly what we found at Shiro. No happy hour specials, however, the prices are so reasonable, it was like happy hour all evening. We arrived at 5pm, when they opened. I was put off a bit by the outward appearance of the shabby house, strange smell and single bathroom. It didn't look like a sushi restaurant but books and covers and all...whatever. White linen tables, good wine list, and well staffed sushi bar; we dug in. This place would have a lot more charm if it was updated a bit. Sake Don, Sushi Bomb roll, Las Vegas roll, shrimp tempura, yellow tail sashimi, tuna sashimi, red snapper and wasabi shumai was our order. Top it off with two bottles of Sauv Blanc for $30 each and we were two happy ladies with full bellies for about $130. (with a bit of leftovers to boot) Their hot and creamy honey house sauce is pretty good on the rolls. I believe this is the chef's specialty, not to mention he likes to use his blow torch. We observed most rolls getting a good torching, as we sat in the sushi bar room. I wasn't sure if it was part of a show or preferred flavor profile. Try a torched roll like the Sushi Bomb - it comes wrapped in cucumber. Yummm. The slices of fish were a bit thin, but the rolls were spot on. Very inventive, flavorful and beautiful. The Sake Don (salmon sashimi, on avocado, on sticky rice) was missing the avocado and was a fretfully small portion with how the thin slices were. The rice was exceptional. My compliments to the chef for the sticky rice. The quality is fantastic. This is a unique place to take a date, or meet friends for cocktails and sushi. We will definitely be back. read more

Fairly famous for being listed as one of Michigan's most haunted places....if they actually have ghosts, they must be damn good chefs! Restaurant is in a VERY cool historical mansion with towering columns & balconies of a long forgotten period, you walk in to a massive grand staircase with cherry wood banisters that curved elegantly to the second floor. The entire restaurant is filled with the original hand-carved woodwork, thick paneling, leaded glass doors, stained-glass windows, stunning crown molding and many gorgeous original fixtures. Yeah, I'm super nerdy but the restrooms are really cool...especially the one if the first floor as it's basically the same as it likely was when it was a home...cool porcelain tiling, etc. Ok about the Food: They have an excellent assortment of sushi and sashimi...and yes, that includes some fully cooked stuff too. They have all the basics you'd expect from a Japanese restaurant...teriyaki beef/chicken, Japanese noodle dishes (love the shrimp teriyaki myself), tempura, etc. They also have EXCELLENT Chilean sea bass...perfect every time. Really good salad- recommend their house ginger dressing. The waitstaff are great- you'll be blown away at how many times they have to run up and down those stairs lol. The three of us went for dinner on a Saturday. When we arrived, the hostess asked if we had reservations because they were entirely booked and not taking any walk-ins. My friend worked her magic and we got a table! We shared apps, small plates, and sushi. The lobster and crabmeat spring rolls were tasty, but not crispy as you'd expect from a spring roll. Maybe it was because they were over mashed potatoes and pineapple sauce that almost resembled pie filling. Even my white friend thought that app was so Americanized! We also ordered the agedashi tofu. The correct way to make it is to cut the tofu into small cubes and lightly dust with potato starch. This will provide an airy, crunchy exterior to the tofu once fried. Instead, they cut four large pieces of tofu that came out soggy and fell apart (tofu needs to be drained to remove excess water). We also ordered pan-fried vegetable dumplings. They had the browned bottoms but maybe they were painted on because they were not crispy at all. In fact, they were also soggy like the agedashi tofu. Decent flavor though! We ordered sushi a la carte and it was pretty good. The wasabi usually clears my sinuses but it wasn't spicy at all. Service was good. read more

This is a good overall place but not perfect. I've been here twice. Once on a bussier day (Saturday evening) with my friends (about 20) and once with just 3 more people on a less busy time (Saturday at around 3:00). Both times left an overall good impression on me, but still there is definitly room for improvement. Food: (3-4 star) overall pretty good, but I do know of better places for sushi. Out of rolls I got, only one I did not like (I think it was the one with meat which I ordered by accident). I am including pictures in my review. I was also not impressed with one of the appetizers (the one with the burning plate) Service: (4 star) good but the wait sometimes is a little longer for the waiteess I would want. Second time we were coming with a baby and asked for a table that would accommodate for that but I dont think they wrote that down. However, the restaurant was empty, so it was not a problem overall Atmosphere: (5 star) great idea with transferring the house into a restaurant. Delightful sushi. Good classic sushi and inventive, creative sushi. Tonight we had a Crazy Monkey roll from the Specials menu. Banana with crab roll and tobiko. It was great!!! Beautiful and delicious. Wish I had thought to take a photo. The Hawaiian roll with mango on top of a California roll was refreshing. Everything we ordered was very satisfying. For dessert, we ordered the Vanilla Butternut martini. It was magical with vanilla, hazelnut and butterscotch flavors, like a liquid candy bar. Worth a stop for this drink alone. Important: There's a small bar in the back on the right side from the entrance. It shares a doorway with the dining room where you can watch the chefs prepare sushi. It smells strongly of smoke when seated in that room because of the bar. We asked to sit in the opposite side of the mansion on the left. Problem solved. No smoke smell. read more

Dined here 10/18 I love tipping people and leaving good reviews because I worked in the service industry for 10 years and I'm fundamentally against hurting someones's livelihood. Breaks my heart to leave a bad review, but the service here is bizarre and terrible. We sat at the sushi bar and watched our plate of food sit in the pass for 25+ minutes. When the server brought it to us, she told us it was still "quite fresh" even though we told her that we saw how long it sat. She told us that we could still eat it anyway, and that it would be fine. She offered us a bunch of sauces? In lieu of an apology, she offered us a dessert on the house. Not sure if she was having a bad day or if she had a split section and physically could not go back and forth to where they put us, but it was a joke to receive such bad service and then be gaslit about how long our food languished in the pass because like 7 staff were working the sushi line, we were sitting in front of the kitchen. I was willing to give the server the benefit of the doubt until she refused to take accountability or involve anyone in management or on staff to address how bad our experience was. Came without a reservation on a Friday night and they were busy as usual. Luckily it was just my wife and I so we were seated within 10 minutes. Our waitress did a good job of checking on us frequently. We started with the braised pork belly which had good flavor but was on the dry side. Their miso soup is one of my favorites. The vegetable fried egg noodles were solid. Per usual the sushi was on-point. The prices are very reasonable and the setting in the converted house has a lot of character.
