The Saimin is the absolute star of the show and the 25 minute wait for dining in is worth the wait. The Saimin noodle is homemade and the broth makes it the best on the island and worth the drive. The Teri beef stick was average and the cheeseburger soft and a bit sweet but without a doubt nothing beats what they're famous for. The ambiance is "old school" which I like. Conversation with my friend who was visiting from CA, we brought up Shige's Saimin Stand, hoping she gets to visit while she was here. I happen to drive past Shige's on our way to the North Shore and it has been awhile for my Shige's fix, wish it wasn't so far from me. Stopped in for take out, order at the door, there's a table in front instead of walking in to restaurant, name will be called once its done, despite the staff hearing my order wrong or my bad it could be my fault, I wanted fried saimin and not saimin, all good. It was fixed and ready to be enjoyed. My take out order for this visit, fried saimin ( only comes in one size) with added veggies ($1.50 extra) side broth and tuna melt. The prices did go out since my intial review but this is the normal nowadays. The tuna melt was great but a little on the oily side. I killed 2 birds with one stone having fried saimin, then tsukemen style, and did made it saimin style with the side broth. hehe. It sure hit the spot. We were in Wahiawa and decided since we were up there to grab a bite for dinner at Shige's Saimin. We both ordered the large wonton min and a Teri beef sandwich, the Saimin broth is always good and tasty and they make their own Saimin noodles which are flat which it is different but good. Also the wonton is solid not loose filling which gives it a good texture to the wonton. The Teri beef is well marinated and tender and is very flavorful, but can be a little messy if they put too much mayonnaise and sauce on. It has been a local family own restaurant for years and always busy so if you go during the lunch hour expect to wait for a table. They have parking but it is shared by other businesses. Considering how I wasn't able to make it here during either of my last couple of trips to Hawaii, I was pretty excited to finally make my way to the Dole Plantation. However, I have to admit that what got me even more excited about driving out here was knowing that we were also going to be stopping off at Shige's Saimin Stand! While I actually have no idea how I first came across them, what I do know is that they've been on my list of bookmarks for years, so I was stoked to finally check them out! And, of course, to get my first legit bowl of saimin! With the way the complex is oriented relative to the street (it's almost perpendicular, like an alley), Shige's Saimin Stand isn't visible from the main drag through Wahiawa (there's a small sign right by the parking lot's entrance. However, that also adds to their mom-and-pop/hole-in-the-wall vibe. Inside, this place feels like a throwback to another time, especially with its mildly dated decor and old school letter board menu. Listed on it, though, they've got a smattering of offerings, from their signature saimin, udon, and wonton noodle bowls to a collection of burgers, sandwiches, Hawaiian lunch plates, and sides. Simple, but no less appealing! -- SPAM MUSUBI...$2.50 All in all, this was pretty solid. Not only was this pretty big for the money, but the cut of SPAM was fairly thick and the rice was soft and moist. I just wish the SPAM had a bit more sauce on it! -- SAIMIN NOODLE SOUP...$8.95 (small) Exactly what we came here for and it didn't disappoint. Although the broth was a bit salty, I liked that there was a good amount of char siu, ham, fish cake, and ribbons of eggs, all of which may have added to the saltiness. As for the noodles, they had a nice bite to them. -- MINI TERIYAKI BEEF PLATE...$10.75 Admittedly, this didn't appear all that impressive, but it tasted better than it looked. The beef was thin-ish yet very tender and I liked that it wasn't drowning in sauce. As for the mac salad, it was great - not too heavy on the mayo and quite flavorful! Even though nothing specific that we tried blew us away, two other aspects of Shige's did - how friendly everyone was and how reasonable the prices are. The latter was particularly impressive because, even in the Bay Area, the food here would still qualify as relatively cheap. Too bad we weren't able to really take advantage of that to try more food, though. I especially wish we had been able to get one of their burgers, as the photos of them on Yelp remind of the old school, no frills ones I grew up eating. I love the food at Shige's. It always feels so homey and is the perfect meal on a rainy day. I came for an early dinner at around 4:30pm, and even at this time, we got the last parking stall in the lot. Luckily, there was no wait to dine in but at 5pm, it started to get crowded and multiple parties were waiting outside. I ordered the curry udon with wonton, cheeseburger deluxe, and the Teri beef burger. The curry udon is definitely my favorite noodle dish, and getting the wontons are a must! I love the texture of them and pairs well with the noodles. The cheeseburger deluxe is the perfect simple cheeseburger that goes great with the noodles. I got the Teri beef burger to go. The Teri beef is the thin sliced meat, and this is good if you're not looking for a true burger. The workers here are friendly and efficient. But the homemade saimin noodles are incredible, and if the udon noodles weren't sold out, I bet those would be, too. We're in summer right now so it's hot and I wasn't in the mood for saimin, so we just ordered burgers (please no judgement). Yes, as previously mentioned, there is parking.....albeit it is limited as Shige's shares the parking area with other businesses. Pro tip: the parking "lot" is one way only. You will literally have to go around the block to enter the parking area again. 2. Yes, there are two entrances. One door for take out only, and the other door for customers "dining in". We arrived around 5:00pm on a weekday, and (fortunately) the dining area was not crowded at all (though other parties did walk-in as the afternoon progressed). 3. Yes, the menu is simple. To me, they serve what I'd like to classify as local comfort food. I chose the hamburger steak (mini), while my 2 friends ordered the saimin, teri beef plate burger, and teri-beef plate. We all enjoyed the food! I was so impressed by the hamburger steak. The mini was a decent portion, and by the time I finished my food I realized I should have ordered the regular portion. 4. Yes, the service was great and very satisfactory. All the staff that looked after us were friendly, polite, personable, and patiently answered our questions about the menu. BOTTOM LINE Good service. I had a co-worker who was raving about this place despite it being off the beaten path, but we popped in when we found ourselves heading up this direction on the way to the North Shore. It definitely has hole in the wall cafe vibes, but sometimes that's where the best food is! Parking can be a bit of a challenge as Shige's is located in a strip mall with a one way parking lot, but thankfully we found a spot and were able to be seated immediately since it wasn't quite rush hour on a weekday lunch. I got a small saimin with a deluxe cheeseburger. We were served pretty quickly and the food was good! The saimin wasn't anything fancy but the noodles had a nice chewy texture and with the strips of spam and char siu in the soup, it hit the spot. The burger didn't look fancy at all- seemed like it was out of someone's backyard bbq but it was tasty with the patty being juicy and well seasoned. When I read that the #1 cheeseburger in America, according to Yelp, was here in Hawaii, I had to check it out. OMG, it was one of the best I've tasted! It's all about the burger and this one was near perfection. It was handmade, not the perfect round frozen burger a lot of other places have. The taste was meaty and very juicy. It was also grilled nicely so it was crispy and chewy. Not soft, mushy, or gritty. I had the deluxe so it came with cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. The condiments were ketchup and mayo. No fancy sauces or toppings, just a nice tasty cheeseburger! I also shared a saimin. It reminded me of my mom's. The noodles are curly and al dente. The soup base very tasty but not salty. Condiments were char siu, kamaboko, green onions and my favorite, spam. I grew up eating spam in my saimin but not too many places serve it like this. I also had bbq sticks which were good and complemented the whole lunch. The service was excellent and the place reminds me of saimin stands from days gone by. I felt very famished and craved for comfort food after work. Followed my intuition. Free parking in the one way lot with a few parallel and angled stalls. Best to visit during non peak hours. Menus are posted inside and visible outside for deciding what to order. If you want to dine in, open the last door, wait for employee to acknowledge, then be seated. I changed my mind about dining in after seeing 1-2 small tables available and everyone looked up from the meals and conversations. I opened second to the last door, where a local, Polynesian employee helped me place my order with ease. I think he knew I wasn't a regular there when I said, "May I place an order for one cheeseburger and one fried noodles to go." My voice hesitated, "Oh, I mean fried saimin." He asked, "Do you want thin noodles or thick noodles?" My thoughts, "Ruby, get with the lingo - saimin or udon cause they don't say or show noodles on the menu." Internally laughing! They accept cash and cards for payment. There's 3% surcharge or convenience fee for using card. After waiting five minutes outside for my order, same employee opened the door and handed my plastic bag of piping hot fried saimin and hot cheeseburger. My hands and voice as I walked to my vehicle, "Hooo! Hooo! Hot! Hot!" My first time trying their famous, well known cheeseburger. Juicy, one inch, well done, savory, homemade beef patty sitting on light, disguised ketchup or catsup with some light thousand island sauce oozing from the bottom hamburger bun, layered with melted American cheese, fresh lettuce, and top bun.
