Lamb Curry

I had the Hummus Bowl with Gyro meat. Awesome and filling. My wife (photo) had the Lamb Curry with basmati rice. She described it as amazing. We have put this on our list of places worth the trip.

Gyro Bowl

It's was pleasant experience despite the construction that was going on along the road.the staff was friendly and the place looks pretty clean . Food the gyro bowl I got was flavorful although the meat was a little bit on the dry side but my daughter did like the crispy parts of it . Price was good for the portion and the lemonade was pretty refreshing!

Time for a gyro

Delightful gyro sandwich...have had several times, and consistently delicious loaded with plenty of meat, tzatsiki, tomatoes and onions on Greek style pita. Yum. Baklava isn't that special though. The ambience is welcoming, beautiful and clean. Live this little area of Grand Ave, too.

Beautiful welcoming decor and staff

Every time we visit MN we have to make a trip here. The fancy hummus is just that. Fancy and delicious. The atmosphere is lovely. The staff are kind and make you feel very welcome. Love the iced tea. Be sure to get some baklava to take home with you.

Babaganoush

Wow! We've been here a few times now and it's quickly become one of my husbands favorites. He loves the grape leaves and we devour the babaganoush every time - I don't know what it is because I hate eggplant but it's so smooth and full of delicious flavor I can't help but gobble it up with the warm pita bread. The interior setting is decadent and warm, pulling the whole meal together. The only reason for 1 less star is staff can be a bit unpredictable in what they're willing to accommodate or change. I am not a huge vegetable person so on this first occasion they let me do double rice instead of the side salad but it's hit or miss if they'll swap it out. Either way, food is delicious, just depends on how much I am able to eat.

Tried this place for lunch. It's a casual spot where you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. Many people were also getting takeout. They sell larger containers of their sauces if you want to take their flavors home. I tried the gyro bowl and enjoyed it. The tzatziki sauce was creamy and flavorful and the salad toppings added a fresh crunch. The gyro meat was a little too crispy and thin. It had a nice flavor but curled up on itself. I also ordered a side of fries which was a very large portion. A nice side dish to accompany the flavorful bowl. I also tried the falafel which wasn't my favorite but had a nice crust. There was an odd blend of spices that didn't agree with me. To finish off lunch I shared some baklava and a turtle brownie. The baklava was nice and flaky and the brownie was very rich and chocolatey. This is a cute spot to try if you are craving Mediterranean near Macalester college

Gyro Pita

Shish has been a favorite go to of mine for many years. I have never had a dish that has been disappointing. Every single time, my entries have arrived with overflowing portions and fresh ingredients. It is clear that the owner takes great pride and not only the quality of his meals, but the presentation. I would not be surprised if someone told me he personally hand pics every single vegetable that is used in the kitchen, that is fresh quality focused each meal is. Their garlic sauce is incredible and I often get the Mezza platter if I want a variety of fresh meal eastern appetizers. Their gyros are overflowing with tender meat and the pita bread is always pillowy, hot and fresh.

Loved the food here! Lowkey place with lots of options! I really loved their Turkish coffee! Huge food portions!! The staff were super polite!

Gyro Plate over rice

I am surprised I had not written a review of Shish as yet and its one of my favorite Mediterranean restaurants in the cities. I had their Gyro plate over rice and a side of lamb bacon. The lamb bacon was a little too fatty for me. The gyro plate was delicious and very balanced. I loved that I had seconds for later in the afternoon. My Arabic tea tasted very wholesome and calming. In the past I have enjoyed their pastries but did not indulge this time. All I will say is the sweet options are as solid as their savory options.

Food 4/5. We ordered the Jerusalem Hummus, Falafel Burger Chicken Kebab Plate, Chai Latte and Red Tea. Everything was plated nicely, huge portion and tasted flavorful! Service 4/5 We went on a Sunday evening and it was very busy. Plus, they only had one employee in the front - super nice young man who took all dine in and phone orders, cleaned the tables, and brought us our foods. Props to him for being so quick and attentive. Once we ordered our food at the register and found a table, I was surprised at how quick the food came out. Every now and then the employee would check up on us... Water was self served too. Ambiance 3/5 Very comforting and home-like vibes. The glass lights added a nice Mediterranean touch with the natural lighting through the open window.

Food was mediocre. My partner and I thought the chicken shawarma was good until we both got violent food poisoning from it.

We got to that door just as the owners were closing up shop, so we asked for a nearby suggestion and were directed down the block, to the other side of the protest. My friend promptly forgot the name of the suggested eatery, and I was busy focusing on the protest and feeling so deeply proud of our community, so we simply meandered before arriving at Hamdi. Abdiladif had such a bright, warm grin spread across his face as he welcomed us into the space and led us to a back table that you wouldn't think there was a fight for human rights occurring right beyond the walls. Or rather, it's possible that he realizes that, yes, there was, and every voice outside and every visitor inside is proof of where this community stands in this fight. Yeah, okay, that'd be reason for me to grin, too. The menu was simple. A few protein options. A few vegetarian dishes. A few drinks. A complimentary cup of Somalian tea that you could refill at will at a station conveniently located at the middle corner between the two dining rooms. No prices beside the menu items, which was puzzling. Abdiladif was so friendly and happy to answer our many curious questions, offer clarifications and suggestions. We ordered the two goat dishes. One ended up being out of a key component, likely the happy result of several tables filling up before ours, so we ended up with two of the same goat dish. They weren't really named, so "goat" was all we went off of on the menu. My friend paired his with the spaghetti, while mine was with chapati, hummus, and creamed veggies. My friend ordered mango juice. The sweetened Somalian tea was plenty delightful for me. We both preferred the creamed veggies in the same bite as the hummus. The chapati seemed somewhat dry and needed the hummus. The goat was decently flavorful and tender, though not juicy. My friend struggled a bit with the larger bones on his pieces. We both loved the tea so much that we continued chatting while sipping on one last sweet refill, after learning that a dessert menu no longer existed. Before we leave, I leave my jacket and to-go container of lamb meat at our table to use the restroom. I return to my jacket missing. Baffled, I figure my friend had grabbed it. I turn to grab the to-go box and go pay on my way out. As I turn back towards the main dining room, a diner from a neighboring table within the room runs back in and makes a beeline for me. He's holding my jacket, folded tidily. Sheepish, he explained that he thought I'd forgotten it and had run out of the restaurant with it to look for me. It's unfortunate that painful times like these exist, but it's also beautiful to see community come together in light of that dark. There are several Somali places in this area, many other ethnic spaces to support in the Twin Cities. My friends and I look forward to getting to know a great many more.

Not sure I'll be coming back after this experience…read more I've been going to Wally's for years, back when it was still a small local spot. Through a Palestinian friend who knows the owner, I even met her back when the restaurant was much smaller. I've also been ordering the chicken musahab since it first became a menu item a couple of years ago, and have always liked it. I've recommended this place to friends and family, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I ordered the chicken musahab and after just a couple of bites I couldn't eat it. The chicken was extremely spicy in a way that was completely different from what I've had here before. I usually have no issue with spice, but this was genuinely inedible for me. My lips and stomach were on fire. I brought it back up and explained the issue. I was told that other customers have complained about the same thing before, but management does not issue refunds. There was no replacement, store credit, or any alternative offered. What stood out most is that this seems to be a known issue, yet there's still no effort to make it right when it happens. I ended up paying around $40 total and wasn't even offered the lentil soup that's typically included with orders over $15. I wasn't looking for anything extra -- just some basic acknowledgment that I couldn't eat the meal at all. I rarely send food back, but this was one of those times I had no choice. I left without eating my meal and pretty disappointed. Just sharing in case others have had the same issue or are thinking about ordering the chicken musahab.
