We wanted to come to this "first Canadian location of famous Tempura restaurant in Japan" since they opened with great fanfare a few years ago. We finally made it today!! But the food was unfortunately nothing but average. We ordered: # Asakusa Tendon (2 prawns, salmon, unagi, kazunoko/herring roe, plus assorted vegetables) # Asakusa Udon set(with 2 prawns, kazunoko/herring roe, oyster and unagi plus assorted vegetables). The prawns' tempura was light and crispy-coated, came out well-timed. But I should not have expected the same quality of prawns as I used to eat in Japan. Here the prawns were skinner thus less juicy/plumpy. But they are doing well in this "fresh seafood-poor" province of Ontario. I questioned other items though. Each item (Oyster, Herring roe, Unagi Kabayaki, vegetables) has different moisture level and some items were not as crispy, which meant not-as-well-timed. Also, I did not see any point in the "tempura unagi Kabayaki". It is not really a thing in Japan especially in an authentic place. lt is already seasoned with heavy Kabayaki (sweet) sauce. Putting it on the Tendon, coating it with extra thick sauce? Why? It really killed the flavor. Herring roe tempura was interesting to me, as I never had "cooked" herring roe. It had that popping texture, and it had natural saltiness. So those two items (Herring roe & Unagi kabayaki tempura) may be better eaten without any salt or sauce - not suitable for Tendon - as once on Tendon, these items are drenched with Tendon sauce. Result? Over-seasoned, killing the best of their natural umami. Now, vegetable - the server explained to me that the assorted vegetable (Broccoli, yam and lotus root) are chosen by chef and are carefully reflecting the the seasonal best, but to me, they were chosen based on affordability. I do not want to see Broccoli tempura in any good Tempura restaurant. If you are tempura fan, order ala-carte. Ask for the real "items in season". Eat as it is, and decide what you want as its seasoning (salt or Tempura sauce). Nice interior, very very polite and friendly service. The table service was absolutely lovely!

I was craving for some tempura so I got the Ebi Tendon, which comes with 5 prawns & a broccoli. Also includes rice, miso soup and drizzled with tendon sauce I wish the separated the sauce from the tempura tho cause it got a lil soggy after a while but pretty sure I could request that next time! Overall this place is my comfort zone, so if I have no idea this is where I go! Food: 8.5/10 Ambiance: 9/10 Service: 9/10

I've had ramen upstairs when they first open and made a note at that time to try the tempura side of the restaurant downstairs next time. This week, I was surprised to find out that they had merged together instead of being two separate floors to one since area on the first floor. I tried the ebi tendon, which are 5 prawns and one veggie option on a bed of rice. It comes with miso soup on the side. The tempura is of course the star of the show, with a light crispy batter that pairs well with the sweetness of the shrimp. My critique would be the rice wasn't that good, as there wasn't enough of it and the texture wasn't quite right. When the components of a dish are so simple, it is extra important that each aspect is well done.

Decent spot for a tempura fix. Tempura is crunchy and light and you get a variety of options to choose from. Nothing too special here, but it's a decent spot for a casual lunch or dinner. We got there around 5:30 on a weekday and the place was pretty empty, but filled up quickly by around 6pm.

Unfortunately I was disappointed about how average this meal was. The spicy chicken donburi had very little chicken and the chicken tasted old. However, the tempura was great. The udon was sort of cold and not flavourful. The tempura itself is quite good! The shrimp, pumpkin and sweet potato were great. Next time I'd probably only get tempura as the rest didn't match up to it.

This place is kind of a hybrid between Akimitsu and Konjiki Ramen. They operate in the same store but offer both menus. I've been to Konjiki in the GTA so I was more excited to try some of the tempura options here. Ordered the Asakusa Udon Set and Unagi Don. I really liked both dishes actually. The udon set kind of had a bit of everything. Shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, a mini salad, some pickled cucumbers, and of course udon. Just nicely made. Similarly with the unagi don, it had the same tempura as the asakusa, and a nicely made unagi which was not that 'heavy'. I'm actually not a fan of unagi dons that are just doused with sauce so this one was really good where it didn't have too much sauce but still packed in good flavor. Good vibes place! Maybe if I'm craving ramen I'd stop by for some Konjiki but Santouka is really close by so tough competition :)

There used to be so much excitement and magic in visiting this place. I've been coming here since opening, every 3-6 months. I've ordered plenty of times for takeout lunches, dinners, and have dined in a fair amount of times. I don't know when it all started changing, but each year, the experience and quality of food seems to get worse. I'm okay to wait a bit longer for food to be prepared as long as the resulting food comes out to a certain standard. My most recent visit was a takeout dinner ordered via the Ritual app. I ordered 2 dons and 1 set. They're all supposed to come with miso soup, and the set is additionally supposed to come with these seasoning salts and radish/pickled vegetables. 2 of the soups were missing, and the soup that was served was not a miso soup, and seemed to be leftover broth from a different soup. It was also missing those seasoning salts and the radish. I waited about 1hr for the meal to be prepared and ready for pick up. Ritual estimated 45 minutes, but it wasn't ready yet. Usually when ordering for takeout, 45min-1hr seems to be the average waiting time, even when ordering less. It'll be "ready for pickup", but it never actually is. I wonder if they've been experiencing an understaffing issue, or perhaps they could have an opportunity to make processes more efficient. Anyway, when I got home to open my food for this last visit, I discovered my kakiage set was basically 1 large piece fried into a sort-of fritter. Imagine a Filipino ukoy. It was supposed to be 6 different pieces. It was very crispy, so I'll give them that. Beyond that, a disappointing meal. I also dined in recently and got ramen, and that was great. So is the problem exclusively because I ordered takeout or is it because I ordered tempura? I'll try visiting again, but it makes me so sad!!

The space is small but the ambiance is nice; the space is nicely decorated. Me and my friends really wanted to go so we went on a Friday morning, thankfully it wasn't busy at all. The service was quick and the waitress was very polite! She kept making sure we were doing okay, and our food also came in good timing. The food was pretty good, all of us ordered a different dish, but I myself got the katsu curry. I would give it a 9/10, I wish there was more rice considering how much curry sauce was on the plate, but that is just a personal preference. I would definitely consider coming back again to try another dish!

My friend and I arrived around 6 PM on a weekday without a reservation. We waited for about 15 minutes and ordered a Dual Unagi Donburi and a Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen. However, the wait was quite long, approximately 30 minutes. I'd recommend not coming on an empty stomach and grabbing a snack beforehand. The food was decent, and I might return, but I wouldn't want to wait for too long.

This was my second visit which was significantly better. It could be a mix of factors - first diners for lunch, or lockdown announcements mid-meal. Regardless, it was definitely a redemption meal. The tempura was crispier and not that greasy as before. The bowl of udon was piping hot which I prefer. However, I did order an onsen tamago but got the onsen tamago tempura instead. Not the end of the world but just a heads up to specify if you want the runny egg in a bowl or tempura version.

The grand opening was Sun Jun 9, 11:30 am. They gave 60 free bowls of Ten Don (tempura on rice) and a small sample of sake to the first 60 customers. Then it was 50% off any bowls in the menu. This restaurant received the Zenkoku Donburi Grand Prix Gold Medal, 5 years in a row. They use good-sized portions of shrimp, salmon, mackerel, scallops, and fresh vegetables. They have a sister restaurant, Konjiki Ramen, also opened the same day and time. It is at the same address but it is upstairs. Both restaurants have the same owners and staff. However, I consider them different restaurants because they don't serve food from one restaurant to the other restaurant.

It's aiiiight. Definitely not something that would WOW you. Prices are a little high for the amount you get... So this should be quality over quantity. The service here is excellente. Came on a Thurs evening and there were more empty tables than people. Tempura set vs Tendon: Tempura set comes with a small plate of pickled veggies & dipping sauce for the tempura. Tendon has a different type of sauce that you can add more of on top of your rice. The tempura itself is lightly battered, fresh (made to order obvs), and not heavy at all. Outstanding? Idk, not really sure how outta this world tempura can be tbh LOL. I guess its unique selling point is that there's not JUST your typical shrimp tempura... there's salmon, mackerel, squid, some typea white fish, mushrooms, shishito pepper, etc. All the ingredients were very fresh tho! I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again but, if I was specifically craving tempura one day this could be an option.

Grand opening special and tendon menu items are 50% off. One day only, June 9th. We happened to come in during their promotional day so we lucked out! If you're paying the regular price of $18.50 for the Asakusa bowl of tempura on rice, know that you're getting one shrimp, 2 generous pieces of fish, a chunk of roe, and squid. The 3 vegetables were shishito pepper, king mushroom, and eggplant. It's a good portion of tasty fried goodness on rice. A very satisfying meal if you're not afraid of fried foods. The tempura is not heavy or greasy. The sauce is sweet and makes everything delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. If the upstairs ramen wait is too long, this is a good alternative. Two different restaurants in one location. Now if only they had a sushi place next door...

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn.
