There was a time it wasn't alone in the Ecuadorian street food game, but somehow the rest of those carts have disappeared and Sabor Ecuatoriano has managed to remain. As a result, it is the only Ecuadorian street food option in western Queens outside of Jackson Heights. (#1) It seems crazy to think that I've enjoyed more of the food here than I have at the JH street carts. Their llapingachos (potato cakes?) are addicting and the hornado (roast pig) is usually the first thing that is gone from the cart. The sweet woman who runs the cart will often break off a piece of that crispy skin for every platter on top of some mote (hominy) rice, and veggies. I've managed to score a humita (choclo tamale?) every so often and love it as the perfect appetizer / snack. On even more rare occasions they have bolón de verde, which is like a mofongo-type ball that is very tasty. I haven't indulged much on the stew side, but I am pretty sure I've spotted seco (meat stew) and encebollado (fish stew). If I'm not mistaken they're still around from Thursday-Saturday. I wish they'd be present every day, but at least this gives us fans something to look forward to. The cart only accepts cash and most platters run one about $10. Hailing from the famous late night cart in Jackson Heights (http://www.yelp.com/biz/potala-fresh-momo-jackson-heights), it seems the momo movement is well on its way west to bring some diversity to a hood dominated by taco, Halal, and gyro carts. One thing worth pointing out, Potala Fresh Momo Sunnyside doesn't actually stay out late. On most nights, it's already closing up shop by 10pm and is often found underneath the 7 Train 46th Street stop or more likely on 47th, past Greenpoint Ave. The prices are the same as the original and the lines are almost always nonexistent. Folks will get their choice of their momo dumplings either steamed or fried. There are beef and chicken momos, but no vegetarian ones to report for now. Each order is $5 and for a little more, one can buy some prepackaged ones that are frozen. Unless you're a serious momo fiend, the steamed / fried ones suit me just fine. If going the fried route, shoot for the chicken and if steamed is your thing, beef is the way to go. Don't forget the hot sauce. The cart is operated by a sweet Tibetan woman who speaks just enough English to take orders. Of course, Nepalese, Tibetan, and Mandarin are also within this lady's range of tongues, As always, the cart is cash only and drinks are limited to water.
