Appointment scheduling was so convenient this morning and Becky was incredibly sweet with getting my daughter and I in last minute... after visiting I can understand why many reviewers noted booking their appointments a month ahead. (We were lucky to get in last minute with a major football game falling at the same time as our appointment). The interior of the nail salon is so calming, love the soft lighting, the pleasant background music on, TV with close captioned Golden Girls going and bohemian interior with its crystal chandeliers, Moroccan stencils on one window, subway tile on a wall, and French chic pieces throughout. You don't feel like you're in a nail salon. Estella and Michelle did our honey and milk spa pedicures (the upgrade was worth it) and regular manicures. Both were great and our paws and hands feel so much better as a result. I wish this salon existed back home... I love the little touches as well on how this salon supports good causes and takes the longer route to remove gel versus electric filing which always feels like it damages the top of my nail. As a man, the self-care of a manicure is a rarity, happening less than once per year. As for a mani-pedi, this was my first time ever. Please note, because of this timing, and that no one in my life gets this done, I have no basis of comparison other than a few previous manicures. After needing some TLC, I booked an appointment with Gingerslam Nail Bar for a standard Mani-Pedi. Nothing fancy, no colors or shapes, just enough to bring them up to factory spec. The experience was alright. While I wouldn't go as far as to say it was painful, the discomfort in my cuticles being pushed back and trimmed was greater than I'd encountered in the past. Also, while it felt nice at the time, the oil used on my feet was less thrilling when it met sock and shoe. Finally, one other thing I wasn't thrilled about: In going from the pedi-chair to the mani-chair, I was given a pair of disposable flip-flops. These things were so hilariously flimsy and ill-fitting, my freshly cleaned feet kissed the floor more times than once. Thus, while not a negative experience, I can't say it was an extremely positive one. Though my nails, hands, and feet felt good after, this is counterbalanced by the discomfort of the procedure itself, and feet-on-bare-floor. While a rare luxury, it shouldn't include this level of discomfort, in my opinion. As such, I believe my next nail-care appointment will be somewhere else. read more

Everyone here is very friendly, and scheduling was very easy via text. I could tell they have a lot of regulars and they remember their names and details about them so they can check in with them and have meaningful conversations, which was nice. It's also less expensive than other places I've been to. However, I came for a no-chip mani and regular pedi, and it took over 2 hours, and the no-chip chipped the next day on one finger. I've been to other nail salons for the same service and it took half the time and did not chip. I wish them well but don't think I'll be back. read more

I've been going to Ginger Slam since they opened. They are worth making an appointment for (I used to go into walk in places because it was easy). But at Ginger Slam I feel cared for. The techs are professional and kind- and listen to me if I have issues (I stand for sometimes 10 hours a day at my job). My pedicure also lasts which is not always the case when I've gone to quickie places. I hope they stick around because they are a class act and I'm happy to wait a little bit for the more pampering service. read more

There is something to be said about boutique nail salons because they add another level of exclusivity and attention to care. I have been wanting to get my nails done here for a long time. However, it's hard to get an appointment bc they are always booked! I booked my appointment a month in advance. There was only one other client alongside me and with the two nail techs we conversed as if the entire salon was ours & it was! I loved the homey-ness and peaceful atmosphere of the salon. The decor was incredibly chic. The nail techs were wonderful at their jobs and you can really sense the team unity between them and the front desk attendant. There is custom portraits of each team member adorning the walls and that goes to show the strength of their unity and pride towards their longstanding employees. Becky and Trevor are some of the nicest businessowners you could ever encounter, they made my first visit extremely comfortable and I will definitely be returning soon (COVID restrictions permitting, of course). I have Type 2 diabetes and must be extremely careful about getting pedicures. Becky was highly attentive to my needs (and the pain I was experiencing in my left leg from my torn MCL) while giving my pedicure, it was so comfortable that I blinked & we were done. And the conversation could not have been better! Where else can you discuss the current state of politics and crazy housecats while getting your nails done, with many doses of laughter thrown in the mix? OMG, this is probably the best manicure I've ever had! Liz, my technician, was so precise, but efficient. She took her time and recommended a fantastic color that I adore. The facility is cute and cozy and they're abiding by most social distancing guidelines (I think the stations are a little less than 6ft apart). They also do mani specific things I've never experienced before (for no chip removal they wrap your hands in plastic and place them in heating pads) which I really appreciate. When I walked into my appointment at the nail salon today, I was hoping to get a starry night no-chip nail design for my trip to Salem, MA this Halloween. However, I was not very hopeful because hand-drawn nail designs tend to be a hit or miss. The nail techs that tag-teamed on my nails delivered exactly what I wanted, though, and I'm so happy with the result! I'm especially impressed with the extra attention given to shape the crescent moons and add a few tiny beams of light to the stars (which were actually not in the original picture I shared from Pinterest, but made the design look even better!). So thankful I finally found a nail salon that is right for me. It's a team effort over here. Trevor greets you, sets you up, and introduces you to your nail technician. They are patient and don't make you rush to choose your color. They offer you water or tea. But the two biggest factors that have kept me coming back and happy are 1: They do not use the electronic tool to remove your no-chip. They are very gentle with the removal process. And 2: They take their time and pay attention to detail. I've had my nails done by Mona and Jhulie and had a great experience with both. Tip: It's best to book by appointment and you can text their number instead of calling. They also have a no chip mani regular pedi deal on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. read more

Sweet place. I'm hoping it works out for me. I really want to support the businesses in my area and prefer to walk on my day off, not drive back downtown for services. You can trust their covid sanitation procedures! Friendly staff, clean bright and cheerful space. Im in the service industry and have expectations when receiving spa services. My nail tech lacked confidence in her abilities and held her implements in an awkward manner. I requested that she cut my toenails on the shorter side. One foot is, the other isn't, however she did work hard to get these feet back to presentable shape. The pedicure itself took about an hour, that in itself was a luxury not to have a tech rush through the service!! I think with more time she will gain consistency given her diligence. I have such a love-hate relationship with pedicures. I love how my feet look and feel afterwards, but there's always some amount of pain involved and the tickling is a pain unto itself. So when I booked my first Gingerslam pedicure, I braced myself for it. I figured that's the price you have to pay for nice looking feet. Sort of a no-pain, no-gain deal. Well.....Nelli was my technician and she gave me The. Best. Pedicure. Of. My. Life. And that is saying a lot. I've had roughly one million pedicures. Not only was there absolutely *no* pain, but she also knew how to use the foot file so that it didn't tickle at all. In fact, I fell asleep at some point during the pedicure, which has never happened to me. My perfect pedicure was followed by an equally wonderful no-chip manicure, by the way. I've found my go to salon to get a pedicure and most likely a manicure. I only got a pedi this time with my BFF. GIngerslam offers two types- both done in spa chairs with the built in massage. One is $25, the other is $37. I got the upgraded one because it's been a while since I had a really good pedicure. It took a full hour and included an exfoliating scrub, longer massage with 2 lotions, and paraffin wax. I opted to go with 2 layers Smash & Cult colors and so far, I'm pleased with my results. Aside from Essie and OPI, they also carry Dior, Tom Ford, etc. Marshawn is awesome. She's super nice, funny, methodical, and neat. Definitely ask for her although the whole staff seemed to enjoy their clients company and to take pride in their work. Trevor was the most comical. Blink and you can miss this place but definitely take the time to seek it out. The whole salon is super cute. It has 4 chairs, 2-3 stations, and a stand up bar as well as comfy sofa. Great experience!! I am usually not set on just one spot for nails, but will definitely be back here. From check-in to check-out super convenient and great customer service. Felt super safe with the cleaning, hand washing, gloves, and barriers. Had a TV show on which was nice to just relax and watch while getting my manicure. Tipping is allowed on credit card which is a nice convenience, even though I decided to use cash. Also street parking is free on Sunday. Their text messaging system for appointment is also a nice touch, one less call in a day. Julie did my nails and was fantastic. No little sharp edges that are sometimes left with the no chip. I was so happy I found this place close to my doctor's office, but I'm equally as sad because it is so far away from me. Anyways! I came here for a no chip and Liz was legit awesome. Not only did she put layers of primer like I've never seen before, but she also knows how to read your vibes. I had gotten out of the doctor's and was feeling pretty bummed and not super talkative and she just let me be! It's been a little over a week and my nails still look great considering I have to wash my hands 50 times a day. But given that my first of many future visits to GingerSlam exceeded my expectations? Cheers to GS owners and staff for bringing a Lincoln Park experience to Rogers Park. And at RP pricing...I'll get back to that. I love patronizing businesses when they're in their infancy, because you get to see how everyone performs under that type of operational pressure. GS has a solid team, with most of the core staff being friends for decades outside of the business. It shows--while the salon itself had the usual first-week kinks to work out, the team was a talented, charismatic and well-oiled machine. The interior of GS is sophisticated yet approachable, with a great balance of vintage glamour and modern aesthetics. There are three pedicure stations, which are light blue and white (think Marie Antoniette)--which pair well against the buttery-yellow walls and chandeliers. Two gorgeous pin-up girls adorn the walls, as well as designer logos and a flat-screen which was showing the classic "Auntie Mame" film from the 50s. While I enjoyed Rebecca's gentle yet effective pedicure care (the massage and exfoliation scrub were fantastic) to my winter-trodden hooves and talons, I gazed in horror at the customer's glass of wine next to me. I gasped when I saw her bottle of Merlot. As I did not have wine. And that is NOT supposed to happen when I'm getting a mani/pedi. Sure enough, there was a BYOB sign on the door. I made a mental note, sighed in relief and settled in for the rest of my pampering. After the polish was applied, I was taken to one of two manicure stations (another will be added) for the Ombre gel. Remember the Hypercolor t-shirts from the '90s which would change color when heat came into contact with the material? Imagine that wondrous effect on your nails. When they're warm (either through body temperature or exposure to heat), my nails change from their original deep salmon color ("Crantini Bikini"--which also looked pinker in the swatch than on my nails, guess my blood runs cold?) to almost Barbie hot pink--and when I was doing dishes they changed to champagne pink. When they cool down, they're back to their original shade--but I've noticed that the tips are usually darker than the nail bed (again, the body heat). So I basically have a non-stop party on my fingertips. And since each incarnation of the polish color matches my skin/undertones--I suppose I have an ultra-stylish soiree? Halfway through the manicure, I asked if GS offered Brazillians, as I was going to head to another salon for one but didn't have an appointment. Trevor then confirmed with the esthetician, Marshawn, that they'd be able to fit me in. I'm no stranger to this procedure, but I was a bit wary of being ad hoc scheduled for one when 1) the esthetician's other scheduled client just walked in, and 2) it was my first time at the salon. While I didn't want the customer to wait unnecessarily, I also didn't want to end up with random fur patches. Neither happened. The waxing area was prepped for me, initial questions were asked regarding allergies, and the general waxing procedure was explained. She stated that she loved the wax she would use on me, because it was efficient in x/y/z ways. And that the wax loved her. Good, as I didn't want the wax to hate her. I didn't want anything but love in the process of my first Brazillian since November. Marshawn upheld the utmost standards of process cleanliness, conversational levity, and tactical effectiveness. Note--the waxing area is divided from the main salon with a curtain. I had no issues with this whatsoever, as the area was 100% private, but it may be surprising to people used to receiving waxing services in separate rooms with closed doors. When paying for my services, I again questioned the pricing. My initial hesitation upon making my appointment was that the prices were reasonable for a reason--my final astonishment was that the prices were reasonable for services which were excellent. Trevor appreciated my suggestion of raising the price of the Brazillian, but explained that they were trying to ensure that customers would use their salon on a regular basis, and not just consider it for special ocassions. Which is understandable, as I share his concern that this neighborhood may not be able to support a place like this. So people in this neighborhood who support places like this in other Chicago neighborhoods? Keep your money local. Try GingerSlam. Love it? Share the accolades and come back. Like it? Let them know what they can improve. Hate it? Honey, text me before you need a mani/pedi, I'll pick up some Cabernet and we can all have a glass and a discussion. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE! Needed a last minute wax and called 2 hours before they closed and they offered to stay open late past their close time to fit me in! The atmosphere when I walked in totally blew me away because it feels super fancy and upscale but not to the point where you don't feel comfortable. One of the owners was working that night and he lives in the neighborhood and wanted this place to be an affordable place in the area that felt like the environment of a Lincoln Park salon. Mission accomplished!!! The prices here are incredibly reasonable and the staff are so down to earth. I had a fantastic wax experience and can't wait to come back for other services! Side note to those who care, this place NEVER double dips their wax and is super clean and hygenic. Beware of this at other places especially if they're on the cheaper side because there are a few in Rogers Park. Anyone who's looking for a relaxing experience should come here! Where oh where do I begin with my review? For starters I am a brown woman whose also muslim. I definitely stick out like a sore thumb in this semi upscale nail salon. I get stared at all the time by clientele but I ignore it because the service has been great and the owners were, yes were super nice. Unfortunately got a mani/pedi yesterday using a Groupon because as a student, I cant afford to pay full price. Oh yea did I forget to mention I was educated, not your simple run of the mill brown girl who stays quiet at discrimination and unequal treatment? Sorry I forgot to add that part. Oopsie! Well anywho, the manicurist kept jabbing my fingernails and toenails with a cuticle clipper, and I kept saying Ow! She kept jabbing me! I was like whatever shes doing her job. So today I woke up with a swollen toe. I reached out to the salon owner as a respectful customer because im not trying to cause trouble. His lovely response-maybe I had an ingrown nail. Im sorry if I had one, id be in pain. Secondly, I would have told the manicurist that I have an ingrown nail. Instead of accepting fault and apologizing, the owner blamed me and began gaslighting! This ladies and gentleman is what its like to be brown in America, no matter how you are treated or what happens. Its always your fault. If I was white, I would get a profuse apology, but since Im brown, I have to sit and take it. Im sooo sorry but no. Given the current social climate and people of color finding for their rights, you really want to treat me like that? People of color avoid this salon, if you are brown or muslim, you will be treated like an outsider. And I confirmed with the doc, I have a nail infection. They sanitized their tools but the constant jabbing of tools in my nails caused an infection. Thanks for the unnecessary health issues! Please take your money and presence where its valued.
