I picked up an order of Chicken Madras here last night bc it's on my top 3 right after the Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala meals I usually get here. They always made this curry really good in overall taste, texture, gravy base, spices, etc. I first had it in either 2017 or 2018 at the original Rice Village spot and always made it a top option there ever since. It was really delicious, not too sour, not too loose. It had a right amount of oil, herbs n spice aromas and full of tender chicken too. I've ordered from Shiva twice now and have had excellent experiences both times! One I placed through door dash, and the other through their website. Both times the food was fresh, hot, and super delicious. The portion sizes are appropriate with the pricing, which I was really appreciative of. I'm pretty bad with spicy food (as much as I wish that wasn't the case) so I stay basic and stick with Marsala. Even still, it's packed with flavor! A tidy little surprise in Rice Village. While on a short stay in Houston we got a hunger for Indian food. Shiva was close and despite the 3.5 stars we deceived to give it a go. Highly under rated!! We arrived at 5pm on a Wednesday night during the pandemic. It was very quiet inside so we had the pick of the house. We ordered the house down here. We had samosas and chicken pakora with white wine and bubbly to start. All reasonably priced for sure. We had a salad, chicken korma and chicken tikka masala for the main dish. Pretty standard for us. Wow, so good. The korma was surprisingly all white meat but still very tender and flavorful. This is the most food I've had in two weeks but it was all delicious. We lucked out since there was a hurricane level storm pass through as we walked in the restaurant and soon to be passed as we finish. I could here the owner taking and receiving numerous take out and delivery orders so I suspect that's the bulk of their business during this time. Food was delivered quickly and above expectations so it's a big win here at Shiva. Also, as soon as we walked in I could smell India. That distinct sweet but Smokey smell that we enjoyed everywhere while in Old Delhi. Awe such good food and good memories. read more

Had a hankering for Indian food today and my go to the last year or so has been Shiva. I will say I miss the lunch buffet from when they were in the village, but even after moving and nixing the buffet they still have good quality/ quantity lunch specials. My favorite is the Murgh Vindaloo (spicy, if hot Cheetos are too much for you, this is not your dish, go for a Tikka or something more mild. If you like spicy, it builds in a delicious way!). The lunch comes with the main, paneer, lentils, rice, naan, and a dessert, all for ~$12. I have eaten in a couple times, it's fine, decent service. Usually I take it to go and have leftovers. All in all, I recommend, really love their spicy stuff, because its got flavor, not just heat, and the location is easy enough to get to (+1 for moving out of the village, parking isn't torture) and convenient to Greenway for lunch. read more

The food here is delicious! Started with the tamater shorba soup which was medium spicy and really good, the best I've had. Ordered a chicken dish named Murgh Tikka Malai a wonderful chicken dish served over onions on a sizzling platter. (So many great meat choices to choose from!) And finally a vegetarian okra dish called Bhindi-do-piaza which I order every visit. All served with rice and Naan bread. Great food. The Food is pretty average and buffet spread($28 with Tax for 2ppl) is too minimal that too for Sunday Lunch was a bit disappointing. They had Saffron rice, Mutton Curry, Chicken Curry, Tandoori Chicken and 4 Veg Curries, 1 Dessert , Papad. Rice was not cooked properly and it was hard. Because of Covid-19, I have been exploring restaurants around the neighborhood. Shiva was recommended as good Indian food. I would not recommend this place for authentic food. We ordered the chicken masala it was dried and prepared obviously way earlier. I cannot remember the other dish maybe ground lamb. I think this restaurant is good for people who don't like spicy food or who have never tried anything besides basic American food. On the positive, it was not very expensive and it as ready on time. This restaurant group has been spreading the good word of Indian foods locally since 1990, though the Rice Village location is the only location that remains now that the Sugar Land location closed. Nothing about being in Rice Village is convenient if you are with car trying to find a parking spot for the Dragon. But the resto is on Times just around the Dr. John cornder from the Briar Shoppe, one of my favourite stores in Houston for all of the beautiful Nat Sherman smells that are rare to find outside of the Nat Sherman townhouse in NYC. The biz's webpage still lists the buffet as $11.95 so it seems like the webpage has not been updated in a while since some of the more recent yelp reviews I browsed before dining here listed it more in the $13 neighborhood which it has become, which is still considerably less than Narin's was $14 at more than six years ago. I like Indian joints that go into heavy hitting details on their webpage. This one just gave a brief summary of the buffet action you could expect: "a fantastic feast that includes exotic curries, succulent tandoori meats, long grain basmati rice, imaginative vegetarian dishes along with salads, chutnies, and fresh baked naan, truly a meal fit for an emperor." I have the ROTDs for Cuisine India just off-site from JSC as well as Udipi on the SW side of town near the trap, so the good people of the internets always seem open to hearing my thoughts on Indian lunch buffets. Thus, spake Shiva. This was my dining companion's favourite Indian restaurant in town (and her family's favourite as well) so I liked the strength of those endorsements before we even walked in. As you walk in the buffet is to the right in the side room, tables and booths to your left, and the bar-ish area along the back wall. The booths are comfortable and identify your regal status to the less fortunate dining at the four top tables in the wasteland you sashay across to get to the buffet line. There is a bit of a ramp up into the side room housing the food. Since the skateboard is safely stowed back in the years I could afford health insurance it is easier to navigate on foot rather than impressing your memefriends with kickflips, subsequent to asking one of them to hold your beer first (pre-youtube and pre-iPhone years of course.) On the long wall running parallel to the booths there is the bulk of the buffet (the good, hot, and plenty of it section) and on the shorter wall running perpendicular to the booths has the bits of lettuce, myriad sauces, the zerts, and other miscellaneous condiments and whatnot. On the hot wall there was a small, but capable selection of dishes. It was missing baingan bharta (which is on their proper menu for ordering) which is the gentlesir's favourite dish at any Indian joint - but unlike Robert Rodriguez's special film Once Upon A Time In Mexico I don't pull an Agent Sands in the kitchen when the baingan bharta (my version of the puerco pibil) is too bangin' and a balance needs to be restored - so I had hoped like Cuisine India it would make a jolly appearance in the buffet line and subsequently on about three-quarters of the gentlesir's plate. In lieu of that, for our veg friendos, the saag paneer (my second favourite dish) put in a beautiful, striking appearance which for me anchored my thoughts to a four star yelp review with the paneer sashaying transcendently from plate to mouth to (masculine italics) mi corazón. The service was second to none. I was greeted warmly as I walked in and was shown to the table. Our waiter was both expert and kind, which made an excellent impression on me. On our way out the manager (I presume, looking more officious than the waiter) thanked us for dining in and hoped we had a nice experience. The service here was so much better than what is the common experience at Narin's on the west loop and other even more unmentionables. The joint has a very "back east family diner" vibe going for it, like some of my favourite places in Philadelphia where businesses such as these are looked at as part of the family legacy in serving the community well, rather than trying some meme promotion on social media to get filthy tourists in the door. The joint is not designed to be upscale like Indika where they pass on those decorating flourishes in their ever increasing prices to you. This joint is built to last, and is well lived in, in one of the most expensive real estate areas in the city. An accessible Indian lunch buffet, with excellent service, that is not to be missed. Came in for Sunday lunch buffet and the first thing that hit me was the heat inside! It was 96 degrees outside and it must have been 85-90 degrees inside the restaurant! We decided to stay and try a new Indian restaurant as it's our favorite type of food. The buffet was limited to a few meats and was overall small for a Sunday buffet. The chicken was a little dry, however the rest was really good. I hope when we come back they have the ac fixed or cranked way up for the summer heat. read more

My friend and I agreed it's about 3.5-3.75 stars so I rounded up to 4. Overall, Shiva is a solid Indian option. It might not be the best you've ever had, but it certainly will be good. Most recently, I had Malai Kofta and was thrown off by it being sweet. I've had the dish before, but it wasn't sweet so I wasn't prepared. My friend got one of the chef specials so she got a little bit of everything. That's a great option if you're newer to Indian food or are just feeling indecisive. This was the first place I ever had Indian food back in November 2019 and I just came back because it was the BEST Indian food I have had and since then I have had about 6 other places and none compare. When you walk in the place just transports you to India with the low lighting, incense and scenery. The food was superb and had so much taste, I ordered the chicken Akbari and it's amazing. The chicken was juicy and cooked nicely, they give you a nice size dish as well including rice. They give you papadum as a complimentary item. It's like a crispy seasoned tortilla! NAAN is a must when you go to any Indian restaurant, although the garlic naan wasn't as good as I hoped, it still hits the spot. My partner had the mango lassi which is kind of like a smoothie and was so creamy and refreshing while I had the Mango Nectar which is cool and quenching with even the smallest sip. The food is mediocre. It's not mind blowing nor super flavorful. It's just ok. The service was good and the waitstaff topped off our drink plenty of times. Chicken tiki marsala- few pieces of chicken breast in subpar sauce. I would not recommend. Chicken vindao - good but pack a punch of spice in your mouth. Saag paneer- wish there were more goat cheese and the spinach sauce was just slightly watery and not as creamy as I would want. Chicken chili - this was the star! Lots of chicken and has a delicious profile. First time having it and me and my friends kept raving how good it is! Garlic naan- they do no use real garlic pieces, instead its garlic powder. This was a bit disappointing and wasnt as garlicky as I want it to be. Good portion however. I haven't been to Shiva since they were on Times, but I checked out their new location today on Buffalo Speedway with a friend, who loved the food. I am happy that the quality met the same high level it's always had, and even though they are no longer doing the buffet, like many restaurants since Covid, they came up with the ingenious idea to serve the meals so you still get a taste of several things. The lunch menu has one main dish to choose from, with lettuce, a couple of other dishes served in small thali bowls, and dessert. This is what's called "thali" and all it means is that you have one large steel plate with rice in the middle, and several small bowls of different dishes, so you end up with a variety, almost like a buffet situation. Since everything is delicious, there's no worry about not liking something. But I'm sure they'd be happy to accommodate if you do have anything on the menu that is not to your taste, if you let them know. Probably the only thing that is different, and a significant improvement, is that there now is tons of parking!! On Times Blvd., parking was always a challenge, but now that they are in the same strip center by the grocery store, parking is thankfully no longer an issue in that huge parking lot. read more

The food is below average. The buffet is what you would expect at in a sketchy strip center, not in the Village. The environment, on the other hand - is WAY below average. In particular, the restrooms are straight up nasty. Just did a road trip from Austin and the gas station bathroom was much cleaner (and it wasn't Bucee's). The trash can had brown goo all down the sides. The bathroom smelled badly, like it isn't cleaned regularly. The bathroom itself looked as though it was built 30 years ago and never updated. The carpets in the restaurant are dirty, stained and smell of mildew. And that's my problem with this restaurant. If the restrooms are this nasty, the kitchen is just as bad. This place is gross.
