Wonderfully spicy spicy chicken combo. Awesome flavor. The curry and naan were SO GOOD. Crispy naan with dried herbs. Better than most places I've been to in Houston. And notably: awesome PRICE. For what you get--at least, for me so far--this is the best Indian food in Houston. I have a super high spice tolerance and get the spiciest thing I can get from most restaurants--but the spice on the curry here is phenomenal and still makes me sweat a bit, and not in a painful way! Service is chaotic because the line is chaotic and goes out of the McKinney Place food court. Gotta love a service that is nice even when they're slammed. Ambiance is a tunnel food court, not much to say there. McKinney Place food court is probably the worst in terms of looks out of all the food courts I pass on my walk. So I guess what I'm saying is, don't come for the ambiance--it's not romantic. read more

Mayuri Express is located in the Underground of Houston's downtown. Cafeteria style - Mayuri Express's main goal is to get you in and out to serve the next customer. Needless to say, the line may appear long but goes by quickly. This restaurant model is ideal for those working downtown and are only allocated ~30 minutes for lunch. I ordered the butter chicken plate, which comes with a simple salad (lettuce, cucumber, carrots), naan, rice, and butter chicken. I will say that this is probably the best butter chicken I have had. It's not too spicy with a perfect level of creaminess. The chicken also tears apart easily leaving it melting in your mouth, coupled with the naan which is perfectly crispy in texture and flavor. It's been a few months since my last visit because I've been packing food from home. I forgot to bring lunch so I had a chance to go back into the tunnels to grab Mayuri's. I always get the chicken biryani. This time I noticed a big difference from the last time. There's noticeably less of the colored rice, the reds, orange, and yellows that mark the rice, just a lot of plain white rice. The lime wedge was smaller and there was less sliced onion, shrinkflation strikes again! The coup de grace? I found a 1 inch-ish long hair in my biryani. That kind of grossed me out. To spare your stomach, I won't attach the photo I took. I'm sure the hair was a fluke, but unfortunately I can't give Mayuri the 5 stars based on its current offering. read more

Skip every place in the tunnels downtown and COME HERE!!! I have had a lot of Indian food for someone who is not Indian, and this food is SOOOOOO GOOOD. Meat is veryyyyy tender and the bread is always so perfectly fresh, fluffy and warm. The samosas are hugeeee, and you get like 3 or 4 for like $0 dollars (not actually 0 but it is so cheap that it's not fair to them). Staff is so kind and makes you want to give them a hug. Yummy lunch in the tunnels! I came after 12:30 and the lunch crowd had dissapated and there was no wait. Grabbed a tikka masala and chowed down at a nearby table. The curry was delicious - just enough of a kick and plenty of flavor. I do wish there was a bit more rice or bread as there was a lot of food! I'm no Indian food expert, so I don't want to be too definitive in my statements regarding the quality of a restaurant in a food court of the downtown Houston tunnel system. What I can say is that the line is always long at lunchtime, with many Indian employees of downtown offices present, so it is at least decent enough for them to dine there compared to other options. This location offers your basic Indian selections such as chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, goat curry, biryani, and different kinds of dosa, with all meals coming in relatively decent portions . On this occasion, I got the chicken tikka masala, which was decent, though I wished the flavor and spice had been a bit more notable. The naan was excellent (and in my experience, almost always is). For a quick, relatively cheap (~$9) meal that I am able to obtain by walking from my building without having to go outdoors, this place gets the job done. read more

Our team went here for team lunch and good thing we came early! Around 12 pm, the line is out the door! It's out the door for a reason. The food is really good and is packed with flavor. It tastes really authentic and the price is great. Getting a lunch under $10 in downtown Houston is a miracle. My lunch was $9.73 with tax. The staff are quick and so the line moves pretty fast. I don't often eat out for lunch anymore, but when I do Mayuri Express is one of my top four with the Brooklyn Meatball Company, Arabella, or whatever over priced place a vendor takes us to. When it comes to ethnic based cuisine, if the majority of the customer base is from that ethnicity, it seems like a fair judgement that the food is somewhat close to authentic. The majority of their customer base appears to be of Indian decent, thus validating to me that food is close to authentic. The sheer size of the line that often builds up here should be enough for you want to give it a try. Be sure to get here early, since the line builds up quickly. If there is a big line, have no fear, it moves quickly. I am boring when it comes to Indian food, I like my chicken tikka masala. I venture out to try other entrees, but like a siren it pulls be back in. I always love their chicken tikka masala, although lately they seem to be skimping on their amount of chicken (kept them at a four vs. five star review). Their naan is outstanding. It is always piping hot, right out of the oven. When I am not caring about my diet, I order double the amount of naan for $1 extra. If you are in the mood for something different & delicious in the tunnels, Mayuri Express is definitely your place. If you are scared to venture out of your comfort bubble, go to Brooklyn Meatball company next door a visit which is equally as delicious. read more

Walked by this place several times and each times there is a long lineup. I mean there got to be a reason for the super long lineup. So today came with my colleague and we just knew we have to try it. We came a bit early so we did managed to beat the rush. I ordered the Northern Combo for $7.99 which comes with the curry of the day, rice, naan and salad. I got the butter chicken. I have to say it was very good. It is a bit spicier then what I like (Vancouver BC style) but I guess people here like it spicy. My naan bread just came out of the oven. The lady took order so quickly that she doesn't really give receipt. She takes card and swipe non-stop. Its located inside the food court in the tunnel so there were plenty of tables. Well I was lucky to find an empty table. But I do notice people here just eat and then go. This is a plus. Highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

Not yet the same food quality as the main, Westheimer location, but a good start. ME is where Rico's Mexican Food was located in the McKinney Place Garage restaurant area (tunnel level). I ordered the goat curry with a drink. I received my food on a styrofoam tray. The curry sauce was slightly spicy and delicious, but was a bit watery. Plenty of meat came with the meal, and the goat meat was tender and tasty. A large naan came with the meal, cut into four pieces. The naan was hot, buttered, flaky, and delicious. A small, side salad came with the meal, but it was just a few pieces of lettuce and a few sliced carrots...no dressing. About 3/4 of a cup of rice also came with the meal. Soft drinks are self-serve, but you have to cross-back over the line to get your drink. My lunch total came to less than $10, and overall was a good meal. I will return. UPDATE 7/20/2015 On my last visit, I noticed that ME has cut-back on portion size, but is still charging the same amount. Not cool. Deducting one star for that mistake! read more

They run out of food at 12:15 everyday. Blows my mind how a place downtown open only for lunch runs out every single day, 100% of days of food at 12:15. You'd think management would be more competent to have enough of the goat curry or something else until end of lunch. Good. Fast. Filling. The Service Our server was very quick. I came with two coworkers who never had Indian food before. Our server took the time to explain the options to us with a smile and moved us down the line quickly. The Food There was option for lamb, chicken, beef? and veggies. I got the lamb with basmati rice, salad and nann. The lamb was spicier than I anticipated, but was very tasteful. The rice was soft and light and sweetly seasoned and the nann was baked very fresh. The salad was my only negative. It didn't appear fresh at all, and was lacking in flavor and presentation compared to everything else. A house dressing our regular ranch offered with it would've helped tremendously. No doubt I'll be back again! I'll be more than happy to being a new face with me next time, because I know they'll be treated right. read more

From the reviews I've read, this is supposed to be authentic so I wanted to give it a try. I ordered the Chicken Biryani combo and it came with a side of sauce and yogurt. It was delicious! Another surprise was that it was relatively inexpensive for the amount of food I got. The combo was a total of $8.65 and my styrofoam plate was FULL. Granted it was a lot of rice and a few chicken pieces, but I still couldn't finish my food so I had a little more than half to take home for dinner. The food was very flavorful and it was just the right amount of spiciness for me. I still managed to break a small sweat. It's located in the tunnels and perfect if you work in the area. Otherwise it wasn't a bad drive for me from the medical center and and I paid $2 for an hour of metered parking on the street. I'd give them one more star except for the fact that I do wish I had maybe a couple more pieces of chicken and a tad more sauce. I had plenty of rice but not enough chicken to distribute with the amount of rice they give you. I was even digging through my pile of rice hoping there was more chicken. And the Chicken Biryani combo didn't come with Naan so that needed to be ordered separately. Can't wait to go back and try something else! This Mayuri location is a hidden gem. The line is always outrageous, so we always arrive either right at 11 AM or shortly there after to avoid the crowd. We love the butter chicken and the freshly made naan. I have also enjoyed the Chicken Tikka Masala, and Chicken Biryani. I am a regular here and always get chicken, paneer and/or vegetable curries (you can order a half-and-half plate). They are super flavorful for the most part, although the last time that I ordered saag paneer it was bland. I love the naan, but I hardly ever touch my rice since it has too much cumin for my liking, and I don't bother with the salad either. I have also tried dosas, which are fun but not really my thing personally, and samosas, which are just ok here in my opinion. I haven't tried the biryani or goat curry. But I never get tired of the curries and naan. This is a go-to place for me. read more

This place is legit. There is always a long line but it moves fast! The spicy chicken curry is delicious. Very spicy, flavorful, and better than any other I've had. Their dosas are awesome too. It's this huge lentil crepe that's bigger than your tray. I kept seeing others order it and I honestly had no idea what I was doing ordering it but I was not disappointed. The line can be intimidating. Items are labeled with their Indian names and sometimes it's hard to tell what is what and also what a combo is, etc. Do not be intimidated, just go for it! Order butter chicken, or spicy chicken, or goat, or saag paneer, just ask and they will show you what you want. I like to get the spicy chicken combo with a small side of saag paneer that's extra. The saag paneer is amazing. They also sometimes have another orange colored paneer that's wonderful as well. I can't resist getting 2 items, as it's all so delicious! read more

I'm so happy about the vege curry I just had from Mayuri Express that I feel I must write about it on Yelp. :) I've being to this spot several times and I always order their plain dosa. In my humble opinion, the quality and quantity of their dosa is way better than the DGN factory in the tunnel. I tried their goat curry before but I wasn't super impressed. It was just another not bad dish. Today I decided to get out of my comfortable zone and ordered the vegetarian curry combo. The curry was so flavorful and it worked just right with jasmine rice and hot naan bread. I finished the curry without any regret. It's vegetable so it's healthy, right...? Their line can get long but it moves quick. I would recommend this location to everyone who needs their indian food fix in downtown. read more

It dawned on me that the restaurant is true to its name. It is an "express" restaurant. Cookie cutter formula. The vegetables do not change - they are the same every day. By that token, there is no guarantee that it will not be used for the next day. Lunch time at this restaurant is usually very busy with quite long lines. The Biryani is so-so and when I gave them feedback that the meat in that is not that much, they, just like any other sane Indian restaurant would do, shrugged it off. They have so much business from all of the other folks that they do not have to listen to me. Overall, I was not impressed with the food and more importantly, the way they structured the whole thing. Went here on a day off to meet my husband, who works downtown, for lunch. What a fun experience; we're new to Houston and he's been telling me about the tunnel system. So cool! I love curry, and I was excited to try this place. It was so great! Chicken curry's flavor was delicious and mild; naan was so fresh and the rice was cooked very well; quantity was more than expected. Chicken Biryani was flavorful but was just a large portion of "rice" with only 3 SMALL golf-ball size chucks of bone-in chicken. Definitely not worth $9 for a bowl of rice. Dosa was similarly very short on meat, with "perhaps" 2 tablespoons of small chicken chunks. Again definitely not worth $8+. Still wishing for a good Indian option Downtown. read more

An unexpected find in the McKinley garage tunnel; it had the longest lines of the group of vendors next to each other. Office people of diverse background. Most of them went for the north Indian curry options which looked dull in its styrofoam cup so I went with the south Indian dosas instead. My masala dosa was made to order; crisp with the potatoes on the side with ginger, tomato, and coconut chutney. I've had better sambhar elsewhere but overall a delicious and welcome/rare find. read more
