Tucked away in a strip shopping center in the bustling Hillcroft Mahatma Gandhi District is an Afghan restaurant that deserves your attention. The potato-filled Bolani is the perfect steaming hot appetizer to kick off your meal. We loved the boneless chicken charsi karhai, and the palak sabzi, both served in generous portions. We paired that with chicken kofta and chunks (yeah, they call them chunks lol), which was also tasty. And oh my, we ordered a couple of pieces of garlic naan, and they were huge and oh so good! The mango lassi was the ideal drink to cool me down on a hot summer evening. We found the prices to be a genuine value, and the food was delicious. A few notes: I do wish that the food was served on china with silverware, and not on disposables, but perhaps they don't have a large enough dishwasher. Also, I wish I could have ordered a side of rice to accompany the palak sabzi and boneless chicken charsi karhai, but I didn't see that as a side order on the menu. I came to Kandahari Karahi N Kabab because I always wanted to try their food. I frequently visit Wilcroft Center and always curious about this restaurant's display plastered the windows with pictures and menus. Without much of expectation, I walked in bravely thinking I might be rejected because I'm not from this culture. I'm a food adventurer and I like to try dishes not familiar to me. As long as Google is available, I could always search on unknown names. I pulled out my Yelp app and did a quick research on what people would recommend. I saw an interesting dish called Chapli Kabab with Bukhari Pulao for $13.99. The meat was very well seasoned and it had lots of crushed peppers. I had to slow down to spit out pepper seeds. The rice was very flavorful. The meal came with a small plate of fresh hummus. I know I should have naan to go with it but I was overloaded with carbs from the rice. I was reading about the difference of Pulao and Biryani. "Pulao is made by sautéing the ingredients (rice and meat or vegetables) together, then adding pre-determined quantity of water." And, "Biryani is where the rice and meat or vegetable is first partially cooked separately then layered and cooked on slow flame with other ingredients." I'm not an expert on this region's dishes. That's why I am here at the restaurant. Since I didn't have a strong stomach for spicy stew like karahi, I skipped it this time. I would also try Palak gosht, a hearty mutton curry. read more

We have dined at many different restaurants while visiting Houston and this one really stands out! I loved everything we ordered. The food has such good flavors and everything was fresh. We ordered their chicken Charsi Karahi, which is one of the best ones I have had in a long time. Their garlic naan is to die for. So fresh and soft. It's a must and just look at the photos to see what I mean! Their Keema Karela became my favorite. Chapli kabab was also great. It was my first time trying it but it was so delicious. Even their lacha paratha was amazing. Portions are generous and I plan on coming back to try other things on the menu. Service was great and the staff was friendly. Ambiance is normal. We came on a business trip from Los Angeles last week so decided to try out this little place. It seemed authentic enough from the pictures. From the out and in it looks like any other mom n pop restaurant. But the food really is something else, specifically the kabobs. The service was great and the Ambiance of the restaurant was also very welcoming. Let me say that having been to over 50 restaurants making kabob etc in southern california over the years.... This little gem here in Houston makes the best naan bread and chappali kabob I have ever had. I'm not kidding when I say this... I would gladly take a trip just to take my friends and family to try this place out at least once. If there is anything I envy in Houston now its this little restaurant and their great food. Kandahari Kabab has some of the best Nihari and Garlic Naan out of any restaurant in Houston. I've had Nihari from Aga's, Himalaya's, and a bunch if other Pakistani/Indian restaurants and Kandahari Kababs Nihari beats them all. The only thing they need to improve is the serving size of the Nihari, they need to add more beef because they barely give you any. Definitely not enough for two people, barely enough for one. A hidden gem amongst a plethora of Hillcroft middle eastern/indian eateries, Kandahari claims to have been around for a couple of years and yet, driving by every few days - I seem to have missed it completely! I recommend their kebab over maan combo's, the parantha rolls as well as their kadhai dishes and the mashed daal. The standout features are surely the naans (always hot, fluffy and crispy) and their kebabs (flavorful without being overly spicy, moist and not too fatty). The recommended Chapli kebabs also have a great flavor but the use of a lot of whole spices make the eating experience slightly tricky (think hard seeds and spices in the middle of flavorful and soft kebabs). Besides the Chapli kebabs, my only holdback to a 5-star review would be the need to rethink some of the packaging for takeout. The kebab over naan tends to get very soggy. read more
