From the outside, there is absolutely no curb appeal. Basically a Quonset Hut with an add on and the inside has a similar dive bar feel. However, with the numerous beers on tap and the best catfish you will find, this is a great place to be on a Friday night! They also have a nice beer garden out back where people throw horseshoes and the staff are super friendly. To the other reviewers comment about Bar Rescue: No rescue is needed my friend, this is just not your place. I do think that the food is a tad pricey, but I am addicted and believe so many others are because they do sell out of catfish on Fridays. read more

Never mind the thirty-plus beers. The three BEST burgers (over two years) that I've ever had were all at this place, which would fool you driving by, since it doesn't look like much more than a surplus Quonset hut from the outside. Inside is deceptively spacious, with pool tables, friendly people, and horseshoes, if you're into that. It is a tradition for me (and whomever I'm with) to stop at Shively's on the way to Pinecrest, which I do once or twice a year. I stopped by for lunch last Friday. A bit of background on Shively's. It is a rustic place from the outside but clean on the inside. There are an impressive 40 beers on tap. Grub is great but is is almost exclusively fried or grilled. The locals are generally rural blue collar but they don't seem to mind urban folks like me stopping by on my way to the high Sierras. My favorite menu item is the Ortega Bacon Cheeseburger with onion rings. Their fries are excellent as well. When at Shively's on Friday my wife and I encountered some major attitude from the bartendress. She was putting on a major flirt with the guys at the end of the bar but took her time approach us to ask us what we wanted to order. Fortunately, this has not been my experience here in the past so I won't let one employee on a Friday afternoon diminish my opinion of the place. A couple of things to be aware of. The kitchen closes at 2:00 on Friday afternoons so they can prepare for their Friday evening catfish fry. They also only serve beer and wine. Check Shively's out. It's a classic joint. read more

Funny reading the recent reviews from people who are expecting a super fine dining establishment. It's a pub folks. People go there to watch a game, have a beer from one of their 30 selections, play pool and play horseshoes. If you want a low key atmosphere to have a beer, this is your place. It is out in Valley Home so there are a lot of locals there. It's the type of place you can go to grab a cold beer after a long day of work. Blue collar establishment full of hard working folks. Not great for kids, but kids can go there. We have brought our kids there before. Their cheeseburgers are delicious!! Being a beer snob, I appreciate the great selection they have. OK so I have been back here like 3 times after the 5 star review and every time since they have been out of things. No jalepeno poppers, no Blue Moon, no Coors Light, no cider, OMG WHAT DO YOU HAVE? We went one time and there was no FOOD AT ALL! The bartender said, "I can make you a grilled cheese sandwich, cause the cook is not here." Stopped off here after reading the CATFISH FRIDAYS banner for the last few summers and finally made it to see what shivelys is all about. 37 Beers on tap, fried food, cowboys, and horse shoes, all in a small hangar looking sheet metal building. Yikes! Definitely a hole in the wall out in the middle of nowhere. My husband is black, we walked in and we could practically hear crickets chirping. Everyone turned around and stared at us. I didn't know if we should run for our lives or duck for cover. No hello, no go ahead and have a seat...it was just plain awkward as hell. I just wanted to leave. I have never been so uncomfortable in my entire life. My husband was like, they are not going to stare me out of here, just sit down. We sat for what seemed like eternity before the waitress finally made her way over. They had a catfish fry special on the night we were there but she said they only one piece left so we ordered that and a burger. Food was okay, over priced if you ask me. Catfish was cooked with the skin on which I didn't like....we ate, said our goodbye and that was that...forever. My husband is so friendly, he can usually make friends at a clan rally....but he didn't make any friends here....one star for Shivelys. Mates, I have stopped here many times for a cold one. Make no mistakes about it, this is a hole in the wall. But they have a large variety of beer, pool table in the back, and a decent burger. This is one of many "on the way" Harley stops I like to make. This is a "no frills" bar, with a gravel parking lot just outside of town. So you wine and cheese people just keep on going... One of the best watering holes in the west! As a trans plant from the east bay like so many others living in Oakdale I find it amusing to read reviews from "folks" who still live in the bay and pass through from time to time to take in all natures wonders that there homestead lacks. Once upon a time you could ride your horse to town to quench that thirst you worked up from a long day of work tending to your property. Or take a ride over to the local "beer hut" on Friday night's to eat some fried cat fish and suck down some beers! Well the type of transportation has change in the past 20 years or more due to an alarming traffic jamm of trailers behind flex fuel vehicles. One would suspect horse trailers? Nope, boat, jet ski and fith wheel's. Heaven forbid you forgot to run by the grocery store on Friday afternoon because it will probably take you three times as long to run in and grab that gallon of milk. But enough about that, back to what I was saying before.......oh yeh. It's called by the locals "The beer hut" for a reason. They serve 36-40 different beers on tap depending on the season. They serve the best bacon cheese burger I have ever had ad if you like throwing horse shoes and poke your nose out back you will find two pits. I haven't been there since 9/26/10, which is far too long of a break. You have to get there before 8ish or you run the risk of the kitchen being closed. Or, it might be 9. I don't remember. Either way, I like to get there before 8 and stay there for 2 or 3 hours. One of these days, I'm going to spend an entire Saturday there, just because. See how big my tab is at the end of the day. Drink some beer, eat some food, listen to tunes, play pool, toss around some horse shoes. Did I say some beer? I meant a lot of beer, because there are sooooo many options. Let's see. Burgers are all awesome. Make them better. Throw some bacon or mushrooms or ortega chili on it. Solid. It's tough. I always want to get mushrooms on my burger and I always want bacon on my burger, but not at the same time. Bring friends and get a stack of onion rings. Hushpuppies. Yeah. Dip them in some honey mustard. Good stuff. Some other appetizers have been taken off the menu, which is sad. I guess they just weren't popular enough. Friday night is catfish night. The posted hours are 6-10 P.M, but my rule is still get there before 8 or you risk not eating. I've done that before, but I wasn't about to drive to Oakdale and leave empty handed, so I got a pitcher of beer. It is also a crushing experience to go there when it is closed, which is Monday. I got there and had to turn around. It benefits to go regularly. It's just a lot more fun to walk in and the bartender remembers you. It is almost always a laid-back atmosphere where you can just hang out pretty much as long as you want. I mean, you don't stay there until 2 A.M., but they let you stay until you're ready to leave. However, I went there on a Thursday once and they were pushing to close. Interesting, to me. Now, if I go over the week, I eat, have a few beers, then leave. read more
