I had to try Shoga Sushi Bar when I was passing through a few months ago, and let me tell you--the sushi was SO fresh and absolutely worth the stop! I tried quite a few things: a crunchy jalapeño, avocado and yellowtail roll (I can't remember the exact name, but it was PERFECT), yellowtail collar, seaweed salad, jalapeño poppers, green tea, and avocado rolls. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. But what made me enjoy this place even more was the atmosphere. Great ambience, relaxed energy, and genuinely good vibes from the staff. You know those places where the food is excellent AND you just feel good being there? This was one of them. It felt like a little treat in the middle of my travels, and I'm really glad I stopped in. It was my dining partner's birthday and I asked him where he wanted to go to celebrate. This was the place he selected, and I was thrilled to experience it for the first time. The restaurant is in a strip mall and is quaint in size, but mighty in performance. The ambience is a little dark and moody-I love the black walls and the string lights-it's a total vibe. For being such a small place, they've figured out the acoustics well and it isn't overpoweringly loud, which I appreciate. Seating is cozy but comfortable and everything is beautiful. The menu is modest-not multiple pages like I've seen elsewhere. That actually feels like a good thing-no need to try to cater to every possible roll out there, pick what you do well and stick with it. Although I enjoyed all the rolls I tried, there were two that were a little tricky to eat. I prefer being able to pop a whole piece in my mouth at once, but the Salmon Crunch and the Spider rolls were so big that I have to cut them up. Came here with a group of 10, and our waitress was so sweet! She let us know she was new, but honestly, she did such a great job managing our large party and making sure our gluten-intolerant friends were taken care of. She kept drinks topped off and checked in on us frequently, which we really appreciated. We ordered a ton of sushi, and they brought it out on a huge platter that looked amazing. I had the gyoza, which were good, the soy sauce they serve with them was a little different, but in a good way. I also tried the Vegas roll, which was tasty. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their food too. The restaurant was clean and had such nice vibes with the hanging lights above us and little table lamps. First time here and pleased with the quality of the food. Appetizers started with seaweed, edamame and potstickers! The picture provided was the first course followed by a plate of Special Rolls. The fish was fresh, service was good. My suggestion is the serve the large platter as two boards primarily so we can start to enjoy the food instead of waiting for the big board to be populated considering there was only 3 in the party. The place was busy all night which tells you so something. We did have some of the Kobe beef that was also good although never had it prepared as a slice of meat on rice. The other downside, if you partake, no beer or liquor. In most other states you can BYOB but Utah doesn't allow it! Place is on my top 3 at the moment. read more

They source the best Uni. We almost always sit at the bar. The seats, unlike many places, have nice backs and are comfortable. By interacting with the chefs, we get more interesting food. This has been my staple sushi restaurant for a few years now. They consistently deliver great quality, it's reasonably priced beautiful and delicious. Every time I order I find myself browsing the menu wondering if I've made the right choice because all the specialty rolls look so good! Our agadashi tofu was fried to perfection and silky smooth. The broth was rich and a tad sweeter than I like but still delicious. The interiors are straight forward - nothing too fancy. They do have the classic mood lighting that you find in most sushi restaurants. The service is very attentive, helpful, and kind. Ambience is so fun. Nothing like it looks on the outside. It's darkly lit, beautiful lights on the ceiling, nice booths. The service was awesome, the server was very friendly and very prompt on drink refills and making sure we were taken care of. I believe his name was Titan? The food was also super super good. We got a lot of food. We got the age dashi tofu, which was crips and the broth was delicious. The croquette was very flavorful. Their katsu curry was yummy and the serving was very big. This time we got sushi combo (2 traditional rolls) and got the unagi roll, spicy tuna rolls. I like their rolls, some days they have fresher fish than others but overall it's a cool portion and filling. I highly recommend coming for lunch. I'm not really a, "risk taker" when it comes to sushi places. Luckily, you won't have to be either with Shoga! Been here twice now, and each time was blown away with the quality of the food. The head chef clearly takes his time crafting each roll, and the specials are always exciting. I also appreciate having more than just a menu where everything is smothered in eel sauce, and the miso soup is always on-point. Service was slow one night, but it appeared they were short-staffed. It happens. Waitresses were very nice and accommodating while we were there, which I appreciated. Before you read my review, a few things about me (my biases): 1. I'm a southern Californian who live in north Orange County. 2. I'm an immigrant from Taiwan whose parents owned sandwich shops nearly my entire time of growing up. 3. I will DRIVE for food, but I resent having to wait for it. Breaking the Sabbath but here we go. Our first stop wasn't open though on Yelp it said it was open until 8 (be aware - this is a frequent issue in the Provo/ Orem area) so we looked for another place. Shoga quickly captured my attention as it was one of the only places near downtown Provo that wasn't 3.5 stars (it has 4). At first, I wasn't all that impressed with the selections of what they had on the menu. But as I looked carefully, there is something for almost everyone. Our waiter, was a tad too friendly (maybe trying to flirt with our 18 YO daughter, I can't tell???) at first but proved to be a competent waiter. We ordered (in no particular order): Tempura roll Nature roll Udon with tempura Teriyaki beef with fries (from the kids menu) Katansu (???): I can't remember exactly what it's called but it was a fried steak on top of some curry and eggs underneath, served with rice and slaw on the side The beef and steak were a little rough, and the soup was a little bland, but I think the sushi rolls made up for it. Fresh, beautifully presented and DELICIOUS. I cannot recommend the Nature roll enough, if you like your sushi without rice, especially. So come for the sushi, and sashimi if that's your thing (it is mine!) and I think you won't be disappointed. For what it's worth, the tempura part of the udon was very well done.
