I recently dined at The Happy Sumo in Provo's Riverwoods and was impressed overall. The decor is nice and modern, with the feel of an upscale converted industrial building featuring stone, wood, and elegant accent curtains. The staff was friendly and wait times were good. Prices run a little higher than at typical sushi restaurants, but the generous portions make it feel like good value. The menu had a lot of options. There were plenty of maki rolls, appetizers, teriyaki, bento boxes, noodle dishes, and even non-traditional items like Thai peanut stir fry, seafood tempura, coconut crusted halibut, miso glazed salmon, and a 10-ounce Samurai NY strip steak. I was a bit disappointed they didn't have tamago, though. I only tried the sushi and sashimi. The miso soup was savory and loaded with tofu, green onions, and nori, though it wasn't quite hot enough. The sushi and sashimi slices were substantial, which justified the price premium. The fish was firm and succulent, and the rice was well prepared. The menu is priced à la carte, giving you flexibility to order exactly what you want. I'd recommend The Happy Sumo for quality sushi in a stylish setting with a broad menu. Food wasn't bad. Service wasn't bad. There's a "vip" menu if you're signed up for emails offering different deals on certain days. We asked about it and they said it's what's on the email. For Wednesday it says "order one featured item and get the second one on us," and there are 6 items to choose from. Only three are sushi rolls. So we ordered two of one and one each of the other two. Our bill came and and they only discounted one item. We asked and they said we have to order two of the same item. She definitely could have mentioned that while we were ordering knowing we were ordering off the "vip" menu. We were under the assumption it could be any combination of the 6 items offered. Three stars because I ordered my food at 5:45 PM and it wasn't ready until 6:45 PM on a Sunday so if you are ordering takeout order your food at least an hour to an hour and a half ahead of time or you'll be standing around waiting like I did. Pros of ordering take out.. actually there's none.. The cons When I got my order, it was like my sushi was rushed opening up each to go container was not what I paid for as far as quality. For instance, the Vegas roll is supposed to be cooked in a tempura deep fry, and it was soggy mushy and smothered in spicy mayo where it' wasn't even touched. I'm on my family and ended up throwing a whole order away because of the quality.. The mango which is tiny fish eggs it's called something else here the seaweed that holds it together is supposed to be tight and opening up the container, fish eggs, everywhere how to eat it with a fork. But you sushi I had had no eel sauce whatsoever, which is the first time and luckily I had real sauce from another sushi restaurant that I had to use. And lastly, mango yummy roll is supposed to be sliced in to individual pieces. It was only cut once into too long pieces like the sushi chef forgot to slice it up.. After spending over $100 for sushi on takeout and this is how it's presented to us is the reason why there are no pros in takeout from this restaurant because everything that was prepared for me if I had it driven 20 miles away to bring home, I would've brought back and have them remake everything because of the quality of sushi that was given to me was unacceptable. Terrible experience and I've eaten here before in-house and had a completely different experience.. Staff, however, is friendly inside. The sushi was pretty average. The best thing we got were the teriyaki steak bowls (and that's saying a lot because we LOVE sushi). Our service was pretty bad. She said it was her first day, but she had no recommendations and just didn't know the menu at all. We were also left with no drinks. I've been enjoying The Happy Sumo for years now. They have so many amazing offerings. I love going with a group and ordering a number of sushi rolls. They have some amazing flavour combinations that you normally don't find it other places. I've enjoyed a few of their, more fruity rolls, with mango and coconut recently paired with a couple classics, they serve as a sort of sushi dessert. Happy Sumo is one of our favorites for yummy sushi. The sunset roll is my absolute favorite! We r tried the Diva Roll and the Rainbow crunch roll which both have a rice paper wrapping and both were tasty and fresh. This time we tried the Yaki Soba and I found it to be pretty bland, but I didn't hate it. We also tried a Sake sampler and while we didn't end up enjoying it, I think that's our own personal preference when it comes to drinks - we had never had Sake. The presentation and flavors of different Sakes were fun and I'd recommend trying it if that's something you're into! Service was good and fast especially for freshly made food. Slow service, food quality has gone downhill I've been here many times in the past couple years so this is not only based on one experience, but the last was the worst and we will not be going back. The roll I always get was made totally wrong and was actually inedible due to the amount of seasoning they dumped on it and was missing items that come on the roll. They brought me another and I asked for no jalapeño. It was full of raw, unseeded jalapeño. I ate it before realizing and was really upset because it burned my mouth and throat and made me sick. Again, I was familiar with this roll and liked it in the past, but this time the spice level was extreme (probably because they left the seeds in) and also not what I asked for. *If I had an allergy, there's no way I would feel safe eating here.* Everyone else I ate with said their food was just ok. The service and ambiance are still good but the sushi has really gone downhill. The sunomono roll used to be beautifully crafted in a spiral but is now just chunks of fish with a cucumber around the outside. The sashimi is now cold cubes (!) of fish that don't taste quite right. The portions of tuna were generous, which would be great if it actually tasted like tuna--it barely tasted of anything at all. The salmon was also a very generous portion which would be great except it tasted unpleasantly fishy. The green horseradish paste also seemed a bit off in concentration. This place used to impress our Japanese guests; if I'd had one this time I would have had to apologize. I'm not sure what's gone wrong with their fish supply, but both the taste and craftsmanship seem to have taken a real nosedive. A slow Friday. Took 45 minutes to be served after ordering. Food was excellent. Waitress was fine.

After almost a year since a poor experience last time my husband and I went there with the hostess and server, we decided to go back last Friday night. Initially going in at 7:15 we knew we'd have to get on the waitlist which was fine, it was approximately 45 minutes. We left and walked around the river woods checking out the lights and hanging by fire pits, but ended up back 2.0 minutes after and just sat inside and waited. After another ten minutes my husband walked over and asked again if we could sit at the bar, she said yes as soon as the people left. It was now 8pm and we saw everyone from the bar leave and she told us she'd seat us in just a minute. During this time a family with a 4 month and 3 year old came in and she told them it'll be 45 minutes. They put the name and sat down. After a few minutes they left and immediately after a young college couple came in and they asked out long and she told them 25 minutes. They continued to talk and she said let me see what I can and walked out and back and immediately took them back to the bar seats she was going to sit us at. I stood up and watched her and just gave her an astonished look and she said oh I was going to text you guys and I told her you knew we were sitting here and are you serious! She quickly sat us in the other side of the bar and walked away and right after we sat 3 more tables left so in all reality she could have sat that family in less that 10 minutes. You need fire the hostess! I will not go back there again because she's giving you the first impression and it was the same young lady both times! So Happy Sumo is very similar to a lot of other sushi restaurants around here, BUT, their VIP program sets them apart. It's free, you just sign up on their website and you get access to great deals like two-fer Tuesday which is basically half off many of their rolls, as well as other discounts on non-sushi items on other days. This will keep me coming back for sure. The quality of the sushi is great, the creativity of the rolls isn't necessarily amazing but there are some unique ones on the menu. I highly recommend the Mango Mamma, it's excellent. The service was prompt, but not overly friendly. I appreciate that they take reservations and appreciated the call back in order to confirm that reservation. Everything was solid but not necessarily over the top. read more
