I went for the second time the other night to Yamato. I went a year or so ago and enjoyed my experience - but haven't been back. When my roommate suggested we go here for dinner though it sounded so good! The food is comforting, the vibes are relaxed and quiet, and that was exactly what I needed after a long week. Even both dining experiences were a year apart - they have been consistent. I got the beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura which came with rice, miso soup, and a salad. Plenty of food. We also got an appetizer of fried gyoza which was maybe my favorite part of the meal. The service is fast and had good pacing with the several different dishes we got. Where we sat was clean, the decor and vibes were relaxing, and the food was tasty. I don't think I will let another year pass without coming through again. read more

Had dinner at Yamato and it was a wonderful experience. We had the spicy miso ramen, saba shioyaki, and katsu donburi. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Portions were very generous, especially considering their prices. And by that I mean their prices were like pre-2025-2026 inflation prices. The staff was very attentive and polite. If I lived in the area this restaurant would definitely be a regular go-to spot for me. One tip, watch out for the lantern lights as you're walking through the restaurant. They're hung low so if you don't watch where you're walking you might bump into them with your head. read more

This is a hidden gem in Orem! While I have been here many times before and enjoyed their Japanese dishes such as yakisoba, okonomiyaki, and katsu curry, the Korean dishes on the secret menu are EVEN BETTER. I got the haemultang (spicy seafood stew) and the osam bulgogi (squid & pork belly) this time, and both were so flavorful and delicious. The prices were reasonable with fair portions. The bulgogi came with a side salad and a miso soup as well. Their salad is probably one of my favorites -- it had a nice, tangy yuzu dressing. The only thing was that there was some sand in the haemultang (I think), so they'll need to clean the seafood better. The service was good. Dishes came out pretty quickly. And it's always nice that you get to eat the side dishes while waiting for the main dishes. I'll definitely come back! Highly recommend. read more

Great service, great sushi and great atmosphere! The booths are fun! Got 4 sushi rolls, a salad and gyozas. All very tasty and yummy. The salad comes with a house dressing I love. Gyozas were tasty. I typically don't go for tempura in my sushi rolls, but thought I'd try the Arches roll. It was good, but since I'm not the biggest fan of tempura it wasn't my favorite. The sunset roll though is by far my favorite. Something about a slice of lime just hits the spot. They are one of my top sushi restaurants in Utah county. I really like the staff at Yamato. Average sushi to be honest. Environment and food left you wanting for more. Lemon slices were so thick on one of the rolls. Tempura shrimp seemed like it was from a frozen box. Very quiet and dull setting. No alcohol, but that's not a shocker in Utah County. My husband ordered chicken teriyaki with shrimp and vegetable tempura. I ordered steak teriyaki but without the shrimp since I am allergic (the waiter asked if I would mind the cross contamination with vegetable tempura because they are cooked in the same oil; I told him no tempura but he charged me the same amount for my meal). The fountain coke was flat. Our meals came with the lamest salad we have ever been served--a few bites of basic iceberg with one piece of shredded carrot and drenched in a yucky dressing. The miso soup was okay. My husband said his California roll was good. Both the chicken and steak smelled rancid and was not tender. We each took only a few bites and declined takeout boxes. $50 for one sushi item and average soup was definitely not worth the experience. read more

This was the best food I had in my whole visit to Orem. The decor inside is very beautiful and classy feeling, while also having affordable food. There's plenty of tables and chairs and a few options for traditional seating where you're sitting on the floor at a raised booth. I would've loved to try it but my mom has knee troubles so we opted for a table. The service was wonderful, they were kind and very helpful. Now, the food. Incredible. I ate so much because it's so delicious and feels fresh and healthy. My mom got a tempura gyoza combo which came with tempura, gyoza, salad, and rice. My brother got beef sukiyaki. They both came with miso soup which I tried and loved. I always enjoy miso but it's my first time having dark miso and let me tell you it's so much better. I ordered a large edamame, a caterpillar roll, and an unagi roll. They were both delicious but eel is my absolute favorite so the unagi roll was naturally my preference. We're all still talking about how great it was. Everything was a great price as well. A pleasant surprise is that they also carried Ramune soda which I've never seen served at a restaurant. This is hands-down the best traditional sushi house in Utah Valley. While not a big city sushi house, the quality is consistently good, and the service is usually good as well. The portion sizes are typical, and they don't put too much rice into their rolls as is unfortunately very common in the area. The sushi, sashimi, teriyaki and tempura are all very good. read more

We split the meal and are very little of it. Given teacup sized place to eat our dinner. 7. Fried rice was a $4 extra charge. This was good. I will never come again. Over 20 years ago I tried sushi for the very first time at Yamato, and that started my love affair with sushi. Well 20 years later, this visit was disappointing. For appetizers, we ordered calamari tempura and edamame. My daughter can tank a bowl of edamame in just a few minutes and she has not found edamame that she doesn't like, but this edamame was just gross. It was way over cooked and had a funny taste. The calamari tempura was not tempura at all. It did not taste bad but don't put tempura in the menu and then bring me previously frozen battered calamari. The sushi rolls we ordered did not taste good. My daughter loves California rolls so she ordered the caterpillar and rainbow rolls. The crab mix was off. I don't know what the problem was but it was not pleasant and the sashimi on the rainbow was fishy. The Korean dishes we ordered were good, on the oily side, but good nonetheless. Price is 5 star but food is only 3 star. The miso soup is the saltiest miso I have ever had. The sukiyaki beef and noodle texture is pretty tough. Teriyaki beef is not bad. But considering we only spent less than $70 for five adults with some leftover, it is a great value to go. read more

Yamato has become comfort food for us over the past decade. We usually come here for special occasions because it's about $$ and service takes a while on Saturdays but it's always worth it! I love their yakisoba (stir fry noodles with yummy sauce, veggies, and meat of your choice. I love it with either beef or chicken). The is last time, I got the the grilled miso salmon which is also super yummy if you're a fish person. The miso sauce was de-wait for it- lightful. It comes with a side of rice, crispy tempura green beans, and tempura onion. Yum! The subuta is also a family fav. Probably one of the best crispy chicken with a little sweet and sour sauce served with a side of rice. That sounds totally American right?! Yum. Katsu is also yum if you're looking for something to ease into if this is your first time with Japanese cuisine. Add curry if you want to get a little wild. Basically, you can't go wrong with this place. The place is pretty wheelchair accessible, although the restroom is a little funky, borderline not wheelchair accessible. Thoroughly enjoyable experience. The service was slow as they appeared to be quite understaffed and quite busy, but it was friendly enough. If you've got an evening to kill and you're not in a hurry, it's worth it. The sushi, yakisoba, ramen, and takoyaki were all sampled and were delicious. Portion sizes are very large, which contributes to the fun of ordering in bulk and sharing with the group. Prices were quite fair - I'd say you'll run between $10 and $15 a person on average for an entree and drink, though there are definitely more expensive items on the menu. I had completely forgotten how much I love Yamato! Among the tons of great and authentic Asian restaurants in Utah county this one is a stand out. The staff was just incredible. They were really attentive and engaging. The restaurant is clean with well-designed Asian decor. Who would've thought that you can get a little touch of Tokyo in Orem? The menu is simple, but complete. They have a lot of classic dishes that I love, but they don't have 400 variations of each kind. If you like sushi they have a handful of great options, bento boxes and curry dishes are the same. For lunch I would definitely recommend a Bento box special. They cost $8-10. They have about a dozen different options so you can essentially mix and match whatever you like. My favorite is the grilled salmon with tempura. It also comes with a little bit of miso soup to start, a small Asian salad and some fruit for dessert. It was the perfect lunch today in a great restaurant with great friends. read more

I came here with some friends the other night and was pleasantly surprised. From the outside the restaurant looks a little grungy with a old neon sign and dark parking lot. When you get inside though, the restaurant is very clean and nice, and you are greeted by a friendly host. The staff was very nice and gave us time to look over the large menu. We got a few entrees and sushi rolls and then shared everything! We got the chicken katsu curry, teriyaki chicken, and chicken sukiyaki. The sukiyaki was delicious, very flavorful. I also really liked the teriyaki, it is kind of hard to find good teriyaki around here. The katsu curry was good, but definitely not the best thing on the menu. All of the entrees had very generous portions and were reasonably priced. We tried a bunch of different sushi rolls and our favorite was actually the simple spicy tuna roll. There was another one that was a california roll with spicy scallops and green onion on top, and that one was really good. The sushi was pretty reasonably priced, and I definitely want to come back for more. They also have a 7.99 bento box lunch special, which I really want to try. read more
