The few times my boyfriend and I don't want to go to Hana, or we are in downtown Albany, or want quick take out, Shogun is the place. I LOVE the look and feel of the inside. Very modern and upscale. The service has always been great, even on busy nights. Sushi is good and their specialty rolls come second to Hana (if you read my Hana review I am a bit obsessed). Their hibachi noodles are amazing as well. Last year, on my birthday in May we came here for dinner and drinks and the place was newly (a few months) opened. It was busy and we had to wait but we had a drink at the bar and got called pretty quickly. We were put at a small table squished between two others, near the kitchen, something that in most restaurants would bother us, but the kitchen was well hidden and it was fine that people were sitting so close to us, the atmosphere was just fantastic. The best part of the night was when the owner (manager?) came over to ask us about our meal and we had just ordered Sake Bombs, so we asked him to join us and he actually took a shot with us! He was fun and comped our drinks for my birthday. I've only had take out sushi since then which was a little sloppy, but still tasted great. They recently sent out coupons (I got it in the mail randomly) so that was a good deal. Definitely worth a shot. Sushi is good and the atmosphere, crowd, and staff are top notch. read more

My wife surprised me with a visit to the Shogun Friday March 29, 2019. She won a dinner gift card from he gym. The owner of Shogun, Bill, is a member of the same gym. So a couple of reasons to try it out. The location is in the very eclectic Lark St district. Not really busy just before 6pm when we arrived but it did fill up by 7:30pm when we left. We sat at the bar area (12 seats), ordered a drink and looked over the menu. The friendly bartender (#103- he didn't give his name and wore no name pin) answered all our questions. The menu is Japanese cuisine - sushi, sashimi, tempura, various chef special rolls-some w/ the ubiquitous rice & others in transparent rice wrappers, full entrees, soups, and desserts. A full bar and various sake offerings. I started w/ an eel & a squid sushi (2 for $6.), Perfect! A bit to much wasabi on the first bite though. My wife ordered the Crispy Sesame Chicken w/ broccoli & asparagus. Large dish, good presentation. She really enjoyed it and ended up taking more than half of it home. I choose to try something new to me a chef special roll for my entree. The Tic Tac Toe - Salmon, white fish & tuna wrapped with rice paper. Laid out in nine pieces on end w/ the necessary stripes of wasabi mayo & mango soy sauce. A fun dish to play and share. This is a higher end restaurant but is very affordable for lunch. Two sushi, one roll, one entree, two wines, and one mixed drink, & tip was $82. for the two of us. Open M-Th 11am-10pm, F, Sa 11am-11pm, Sun 12-1opm. There is a small parking lot on the left side of the restaurant. There is metered parking on Madison Ave. It was fun and a good surprise from my bride. We highly recommend the Shogun. I really liked this place. My parents were in town and I wanted to take them somewhere nice. The service was excellent all the way from once I stepped into the door to when I walked out. When we walked in the host offered to lower the shades so the sun wasn't in my eyes. Our waitress was extremely nice and very helpful. Then when we were almost done our meal the manager came over to us to check how we liked our meal. He was extremely friendly and even engaged us in friendly conversation. The food was really good. They have a variety of different dishes. The atmosphere was very nice and sophisticated. I am definitely coming back here. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Ok, Not bad, eh, Ok, cool, meh, Sure, why not. This was my feelings through the entire Shogun experience. Lets jump in. Parking: they have a lot and i got a spot, wohoo! A 10-15 minute wait, not bad, i can deal. We were seated in one of the 3 tables right next to the bar and where people were waiting. Grrrrrrr!! The buts of waiting persons were bumping into my arm! The waitress was OK, until she forgot some items (hold on I'll get to it!) For an appetizer we got edamame and a scallion pancakes with a coconut peanut sauce (Chef Special). The edamame could have been more tender. The pancakes were awesome. For an entree, a lot of the special rolls had 'white tuna'. While i can't say for sure, a lot of places use the extremely unhealthy Escolar. I was put off by all of the 'white tuna' dishes and didn't even touch them. I Went with the Delmar Roll, Spicy Salmon, as well as 2 a la carte items (octopus and fluke). Not sure what the wrapping was on the Delmar roll was but it was a bit difficult to tear. Nothing too bad though. The waitress forget my spicy sauce (which i asked for extra on the side) as well as one of our friends soups which was supposed to come with the meal. Not a good look. 4 stars for their yummy food! We came here around 6-6:30ish to grab dinner and were seated right away. We started out with the appetizer sampler (japanese styled spring rolls, pork gyoza, and spicy rock shrimp) and they were delicious! The gyoza and the spring rolls came in 3 each. The spring rolls' stuffing were a little different not like the typical spring roll you'd expect, but it was still good regardless. We also got the shumai which was yummy as well. We got the seaweed salad - good portion, it tasted a little lemony compared to other seaweed salad I had, but I really liked it! For the rolls, we got yellowtail, dragon rolls, golden dream rolls, and Fuji volcano rolls. All the rolls were fantastic, the best one was the golden dream! The Fuji volcano rolls were average compared to the golden dream. For desert, we tried the green tea cheesecake. Although the presentation was aesthetically pleasing, I was disappointed as it did not have any green tea taste. Not one bit. We only tasted the cheesecake and chocolate. It's almost like normal cheesecake with green coloring. If you're craving green tea flavored sweet, that would not be the one to get. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at Shogun. Our server was attentive and friendly. The restaurant is really clean & quiet. They have parking by their restaurant while you're dining there (don't walk off, they'll tow!) we didn't know this so we parked on the street, which wasn't a far walk, but parking by the restaurant is a lot more convenient. read more

This is the only sushi spot I've tried in Albany. I like that they delivery under 45 minutes and offer both Thai and Japanese cuisine. They came before their 45 minute estimated time. The delivery driver was super speedy (saw him pull up and turn the corner). He was even dressed with a tie! Though most get skeptical about places that have various cultural cuisines, I say who cares? People are capable of cooking multiple things well. I tried pad Thai with chicken for $14 and the Hawaii roll with Tuna for $6. I definitely liked the pad Thai more than the sushi. The sushi was a great price but the taste wasn't wonderful. There was a sweet chili sauce on top that tasted like the kind you buy in a glass jar at the market. There was also very little rice on the outside of the sushi and it was spread on the nori very randomly. There were scattered spots where nori was exposed where rice was lacking. The pad Thai came with your choice of a side salad or miso soup. I chose the side salad (lettuce, 1 cherry tomato, 1 slice of cucumber) that came with an orange sauce that tasted like peanuts mixed with garlic and thousand island. I thought the sauce was good. The pad Thai had green onion, white onion and no bean sprouts. It came with lots of peanuts and was $14. The flavor was a little tangy and the chicken was decent. Very quaint and clean restaurant that I wish I had gone to sooner! Went here with some friends prior to a movie at Madison Theater, and I was not disappointed. Some items that my party and I ordered included a few different sushi rolls, appetizer sampler consisting of rock shrimp, gyoza, and spring rolls (yum to all), Japanese noodles, pad thai, and curry. Everything that was fried came to my soggy and dripping. The tempura-- I even put it in the oven and it still tasted awful. Am I paying to re-cook my own food, that I paid for? Plus it had weird fishy, rotten flavor. I bought steak. I asked for it rare. They said that would be ok, but when I got it clearly it was well done and tough. Not even a speck of redness. Only giving 4 stars because I got a gift card for Christmas to shogun and wanted to leave the nice hostess the rest of my gift card as a tip and wasn't able to tip on the gift card. I've eaten here in the restaurant many times and never had a bad experience. Tonight I wanted to support local business and get take out. I understand with the COVID19 crisis places are busy but all of my food was cold. I know if it was hot it would have tasted much better. I was so disappointed because I spent $60. The delivery was through Grubhub and I'm unable to review on their app as it shows my order is still out for delivery even though it was delivered already. AWFUL experience. I and my whole family have been patrons of Shogun and Rain (same owners) since they opened but something has gone very wrong there. I placed a delivery order from Shogun at 7:00 and had to select a later delivery time because they were busy. So, fine. I selected a delivery window between 8:45 and 9:15. At 9:30 it still hadn't come so I called the restaurant. They assured me it was on its way. At 10:00 it still hadn't come so I called again. That was when they chose to tell me that they weren't doing any delivery orders that night because of an event in the neighborhood and that they were canceling my order. At 10:00. Too late to call anywhere else. When I asked why they hadn't told me about this when I placed my order at 7 or when I called at 9:30, she just giggled and said she wasn't sure. Ordered (1) baby lobster tempura app, (2) beef/shrimp hibachi, and (3) sashimi plate. I knew (1) was a bad idea before ordering (but SO insisted) -- come on, lobster is not appropriate for tempura. As to be expected, the lobster tempura tasted like walnut shrimp minus the walnut and with a meatier texture. The batter was really heavy and doughy. The hibachi was a bit bland. The vegetables had good flavor, but the proteins were uninteresting. The sashimi plate had a mixture of fresh salmon/tuna as well as some not so fresh options. Liked the atmosphere, loved the christmas roll (fitting name...had to order another round it was so good) and red bean tempura ice cream. Strongly not in favor of the miso soup (the neighbor's salad looked like it tasted good though) or teriyaki chicken. I was expecting hibachi style so that was my southern mistake (in knoxville hibachi is a constant. You can get either teriyaki hibachi or hibachi hibachi, and I prefer the former). Regardless it was slimy and different. Just so much celery on the plate. I'm rarely looking for celery. Our server was grand! She'd make it on the love list too. I should warn you, the place was crawling with lady guests who mostly sounded fresh out of the Valley, circa 1985. Not the hudson valley, the one in California. Lots o words per minute. This was a little distracting on a date with the hub. Of course this might be what you're into. If that's the case I'd give it a whack. Shogun is such a wonderful local spot. Their food is consistent, and good and their rolls are inventive and fresh. Reasons Shogun gets all my money include: -never giving me the side eye when I bring a toddler and a large stroller to their restaurant -showing up super fast when I order delivery -having enough fun and interesting sushi that I never get bored -being on point, even with non-sushi items like pad thai The only negative is the price, which is steep, but for toddler friendly, not fried, consistently good neighborhood food I will basically pay anything. read more

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. I thought it would be busy, but we walked right in and got a table by the window. It was a great spot because you can people watch outside and see the sushi bar. We started with Japanese beer and did an eyes covered taste test with Sapporo and Asahi. I can now say my go-to Japanese beer is Sapporo. I'll have to try this with sake next time! I ordered the Japanese curry and my boyfriend ordered sushi deluxe (9 pieces of chef selected sushi and a tuna roll). The curry wasn't for me. It was creamy, but had a stale flavor. The veggies were a good variety, cooked well and plentiful, but I couldn't shake the flavor of the sauce. I also had some of the sushi and it was great. It was fresh and the cuts were generous. If you go here, order the sushi. Overall, I was hoping this place was going to have a better atmosphere. The lighting was a little bright and the service a little lacking. Same tasty menu as the Delmar location. A good amount of variety, and all the beautiful and delicious rolls you're looking for, at pretty reasonable prices. Great quality and friendly service. Bright, modern decor which contrasts somewhat with the other location. This spot also has a coveted parking lot (!), but be warned - it's posted clearly that you can only park here WHILE dining in the restaurant, so no bar-hopping after dinner allowed! Give Shogun a try... I don't think there's any sushi competitors in the Lark Street area these days, anyway. read more

Shogun is without a doubt my favorite sushi restaurant in the capital district. I have written a review of the Delmar location, but I figure why not write about this one since it's the one I frequent almost always now. The menu is the same as the Delmar location. The location is convenient and there is even a parking lot which is awesome considering its right on Madison basically on the corner of Lark. The decor is also awesome, very modern and clean. The service every time I have been here has been great. The servers are very attentive and willing to offer their opinions should you want them. The host (who I think is the manager (or owner) as I used to see him in Delmar) is extremely friendly too. Some of the servers even remember me since I come in quite often which is nice. I have tried almost every special roll on the menu and all have been outstanding. My personal favorite is the golden dream roll. The regular rolls are also great and filled with fish and not just rice like many other places. They definitely don't skimp. Their sushi/sashimi is also very good and fresh with ample sized pieces. The presentation is also great and when it's quiet they sometimes really go all out with lights and crazy displays. Like somebody else said they are definitely works of art! I haven't tried anything off their hot menu because I like the sushi too much, but some of my dining companions have and have said everything has been great. I really like their mai tais to drink, but have to warn that 2 will probably pack on a really good buzz :) They also have a bunch of hot/cold sake, some beer and some wine. The prices are standard, and they've got great lunch specials. They're pretty prompt when my office has had it delivered, which is VERY appreciated (we're a hangry bunch). I got the shrimp curry lunch box, and it came with 2 piping hot and flaky spring rolls & sweet/sour sauce, a California roll, a generous scoop of white sticky rice, and of course the shrimp curry mixed with vegetables. It also came with a miso soup or salad starter! You can't go wrong. Their other menu items are a bit expensive ($5 for an avocado roll of only 6 pieces??) so I'm sticking to lunch. After relocating to the area from Brooklyn, I wasn't sure that I'd be able to find any good sushi places. Happily, I was wrong. Went for dinner at Shogun tonight with two others, and had a great meal for a reasonable price. Between the three of us we ordered two special rolls (I had the Pink Panther roll, which was excellent, and enormous), two regular rolls, a seaweed salad, a kani salad, and shrimp gyoza. One of the things I loved the most was the texture and the temperature of the sushi. I hate going to sushi places and getting rolls that are made with rice that is too starchy, too hard, or too tough. This rice was perfect - just slightly warmer than room temperature, soft, and I could easily bite into the pieces of my Pink Panther roll without having a sloppy mess. The fish was the same - it wasn't so cold it was tasteless, but it wasn't concerningly warm, either. The pink rice paper my roll was wrapped with is one of my favorites, and I'm glad they offered that as a choice with so many rolls. Even though it seems like a little thing, their wasabi and pickled ginger seemed to be high quality, too. The ginger wasn't dyed pink, which is always a plus, and was hot and potent. I had a bite of both salads, and a couple of gyoza, and again, everything was excellent. The seaweed and kani salad were both fresh, and were flavored well. Service was fast and friendly. It was busy, but our food came quickly. The bill came to just under $60 without tip, which I think is very reasonable, especially because everything seemed fresh. Came here a few weeks ago for dinner with friends before a movie and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the appetizer trio which consists of my 3 favorites; gyoza, spring rolls and rock shrimp. The shrimp were up there with the best rock shrimp I've had. Gyoza had a nice pan sear to them as well, and nice crispy spring rolls. I went with the curry chicken for dinner, having never tried curry before. It was very very good, very generous portion. Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well. I've returned once since then and am very satisfied with the service and the food. Only downfall is that it's a little pricey and they need more drink options. Other than that I would return again because they have so many more things on the menu id like to try! read more

This place makes me like raw fish and that says a lot. Reason being is that their raw fish is nicely warmed and shredded into pieces with crunchies, which add a nice flavor and texture to the sushi. I had their miami roll with tuna, which I loved. Their boston roll came with about 6 pieces and was nothing too special. Their fuji volcano roll comes with salmon with crunchies and is yummy. Stopped here for lunch before heading home from Lake George. The hostess was super nice and allowed us to choose whatever table worked best for us as we had a baby and stroller. Our server immediately arrived at our table and brought us some water. We had a bit of a diaper dilemma shortly after arriving and there wasn't a changing table in the bathrooms . We ordered The American Dream and the Golden Dream sushi rolls And a lunch portion chicken pad Thai. The rolls were absolutely delicious and had a beautiful presentation. I wasn't really a fan of the pad Thai but I think it's just me. My husband loved it so it wouldn't be far to deduct stars based on my dislike for pad Thai. When I heard Shogun was expanding their business to Albany, I decided to set up a Shogun Adventure. Three of my friends and one of their boyfriends decides to venture with me and see what the hype was about. The Shogun of Delmar had a lot of positive reviews, and I saw at first hand why. Their service at the front desk is rather lacking, but the service between the bar and wait staff covers the front desk's errors. The bartender was a trip, she knew her product well. She knew about unfiltered sake, plum wine, and how to make a Scorpion. You girl, are a reason I let the front desk's error slide!!! Our waitress was Tracy, and again... someone who knew their product! She even told us she made some of the sauces! She took ownership and that's important in any business. She was able to work on the fly, I wanted a drink but wanted to be surprised. She did that! She broke me a saketini, fuji apple flavored.... delicious! The decor was pleasant, it wasn't over the top. Simple. To the point. Now the main part of any review on a restaurant, the food. The food was great! I went with Mad tai appetizer, which was the special of the day. Very good I have to add!! Slices of fish topped with a sauce and jalapeno slice. Also had a Fuji Volcano roll, one of their specialty rolls. Very very good. For entree I went with the kitsune udon noodle soup, a soup in which I've been dying to try ever since my fall into Japanese culture. Delicious. It was sweet, savory, spicy, and just good. For dessert I went with green tea cheesecake, one word: Divine. You have to go. I would eat there every time I craved sushi, but the half hour trip deters me from such.
