I got the 3 sushi rolls lunch combo about two weeks ago and have been dreaming of it ever since. I had to go back and try out some more rolls today to fulfill the craving! I got take out both times but the restaurant looks cute and I would like to dine in some time soon. The rolls were so large and nicely presented that I exclaimed "wow!" when I saw them. The portion seemed much bigger than the equivalent at other local restaurants and the price was very reasonable for the size. Service has been quick and my food was ready within 20 minutes (If not less) of ordering. I have found my new go to sushi place, and look forward to trying more of their sushi and other offerings. read more

I do takeout from Tengu often. It's one of my go to places. The food is always well made. And delivery is often very quick. Recently I ordered to my office on a Friday. Decided to give Tengu a try after getting a coupon in the mail for $10 off of $50. It actually proved more difficult than I expected to spend $50 on two people because their prices were very reasonable , which is rare these days. We split the Gold Finger roll and an order of Crab Rangoon and both got the General Tso's chicken. The food came out quickly and service was good but it just tasted ordinary. The Gold Finger roll was somewhat difficult to consume as it was quite sizable and the toppings fell off easily. The General Tso's sauce tasted like it came from a bottle in the grocery store. If it was around the corner from my house I might consider getting takeout but there wasn't anything notable to make me consider traveling there. It was also very hot inside on the day we went, I think because it was an unseasonably warm day and that may have had an effect on my experience. read more

I ordered this for delivery. I know sometimes things can get delayed, but this got about an hour delayed and I'm not sure why. In the meantime, they didn't send any utensils - or soy sauce or other sauces. And half the food was inedible. The miso soup tasted like dishwater, the cold noodles were flavorless and weird, and the general tso's sauce was a watery mess. It inspired me to jump onto Yelp for the first time in a long time in order to voice how bad it was. The soft shell crab, really small, was good. My issue was with the pineapple fried rice. To say it was bad would be an understatement. The rice was mushy, the pineapple was smaller than the peanuts (why??) that were tossed on top, the canned shrimp was awful, just awful. No onion, no peas, a hint of carrot, just no flavor. My drunken noodles with chicken wasn't bad, but there was more oil and less chicken than I would have liked, and my noodles were a bit gummy. I wouldn't order it again. I've been here probably 3-4 times in the span of 2 months (and more before that) and that's a lot for me consider I like to try new places. I've tried quite a few things on the menu and nothing has really disappointed me so far. Duck roll (1) - they cut that one roll into 4 1" pieces, so it isn't a lot of food. I absolutely love it though. There's a good amount duck in there, it's crispy and it's one of my boyfriend's favorite things there. Sushi pizza - this is one of my favorite things here. The base is paratha and honestly, I've never had it outside of this dish... but it's deliciously chewy and warm. The toppings - unagi sauce, spicy mayo, seaweed salad - make it super savory and are balanced out by the avocado, fish and paratha. 10/10 worth it. Fried jalapeno - I probably wouldn't get this again. It wasn't bad but there is better stuff in my opinion. Volcano roll - basically deep fried sushi. if youre afraid of raw fish, this might be a good way to go. Personally I didnt like it as much because the spicy tuna was cooked in the process. Salmon don - usually pretty fresh and a good amount of salmon. Ill get it if I'm craving salmon specific... which is a lot. Poke bowl - I havent tried this, but my friends say it's a good deal - the bowl is pretty gigantic. Personally, I rather just go to an actual build your own poke place if if I wanted a bowl. If you are looking for some really good sushi for a reasonable price at lunch time, Tengu Asian Bistro is definitely a place to check out. I go to Tengu Asian Bistro pretty frequently for their 3 roll lunch combo. This past time I ordered a shrimp tempura roll, spicy tuna roll, and a Philadelphia roll. The Philadelphia roll here is probably one of my favorite versions of the roll. I've ordered sushi from many places and this still holds up as either my number 1 or number 2. The spicy tuna roll again is excellent with great flavor and a good amount of crunch from the tempura flakes. The Shrimp tempura is another roll I always struggle to not order since it is quite good. I've also ordered the spicy salmon and eel avocado rolls here before among others, and they are all really great. The 3 roll lunch combo comes with your choice of either a side salad or miso soup. I prefer the salad which has an awesome dressing that comes with it, but the miso soup is also very good. (Uber Eats delivered to my hotel on 4/12/2021.) Hanging out in Albany, NY for business and I'm feeling lazy so I'm chillin' scrolling through Uber Eats finding some place to use my coupon. Well, last time I was in the area I had a great experience with another sushi location, so I'll try a different one this time! Yet again, I struck gold! Here's why! Atmosphere/Appearance: Since I had Uber Eats deliver my food I did not have an actual experience at the restaurant. According to the pictures I've seen on Yelp this place looks pretty cool though. Service: I didn't get the chance to experience any service from the institution since I ordered from Uber Eats. Food: Alright, now to the actual review. Lol. I started with some edamame, which could've used a bit more salt to be honest, then I proceeded with 3 of their specialty rolls. First up was the Akuma Roll which contains king crab, mayonnaise and avocado on the inside. The roll is then topped with spicy salmon, avocado, eel sauce and black tobiko. This roll was delicious. It was very balanced, not too salty, very succulent, soft and just good. The combination of flavors worked very well. Next up was the Tengu Roll. Inside is spicy crabmeat, avocado and "crunchies". On top is seared sliced steak, spicy mayo eel sauce and fried onion scallions. This roll was super savory, a bit salty and FULL of so many flavors. I really, really liked the surf & turf aspect of this roll. It was my favorite of the 3 that I tried. Last, but not least was the Mr. Mango Roll. Inside the roll is spicy crabmeat and avocado. On top is mango and mango sauce. This roll was much simpler than the others and I really liked that. I loved how the spice of the crabmeat complemented the sweetness of the mango. This was a very solid roll. Value: Akuma Roll: $14.25 Mr. Mango: $12.25 Tengu Roll: $14.95 Edamame: $4.50 Sushi is usually pretty costly so that's to be expected. These specialty rolls fall right in line with the costs of other places I've been so I'd say this place offers really good value sushi for the prices. In conclusion, I'm 2 for 2 for picking good sushi places in the area! I really enjoyed my food, the delivery experience and what I paid. Weekend in the Albany area and we decided to go for Asian... Thai... and according to yelp Tengu was one of the places to go. Tengu is a nice restaurant with friendly and fast service. We ordered soups, fried chicken, a spring roll and Pad Thai. Because we eat Thai often our taste buds have reference points. The food is good, it is a little bit more spicy, but that's the way I like it. The Tom Yum was great! The Pad Thai didn't have the peanut flavor like others I ate... it was still good, but it could've been gooder. Late Sunday lunch after a wedding expo, everyone wanted sushi. Group looks to me and i remember the new place right on central near my house. Time to try Tengu. With almost all great reviews I had a feeling everyone would be pleased. The place is conveniently located and beautiful inside. A comfortable atmosphere had us ready to dig in. The menu is huge and the pictures helped big time. We settled on quite a few items. I started with miso soup, everyone else got the kani salad. both were very good. The crab rangoons were the best i've ever had for sure. i do love when they are folded this way. We also sampled the tataki plate. it was good, flavorful and spicy. our group of 4 chose 6 rolls to share. It was enough food for all of us. 6 rolls is a lot of names to remember but i will just say they were all delicious. the presentation was also beautiful. they have A LOT more on the menu besides sushi. they have hibatchi, dinners, salads, etc etc. Pretty much something for everyone. over all it was an expensive lunch, but it is sushi. When in Albany, come check this place out! The Yelp reviews are spot on with this one. I'm in Albany for the night, and I wanted my friend and cousin to have a good night for dining. As a Yelp Elite, I trusted my instinct and recommended this place based on the reviews. It's a Tuesday night, and things were pretty quiet in the restaurant. My friend was already seated there and we were able to quickly join him. The server came out really quickly with menus. The available food at the place is pretty extensive. Whether you're in the mood for freshly made sushi or fried noodles, they got you covered. I picked the fried dumplings appetizer along with the crispy duck. I placed a delivery order and the quality of the food was that of what you would receive while dining in, minus the awesome theatrics by the amazing chefs. I planned to eat some and save some for later because it was so much food. But, that didn't work out too well... I ate until I was stuffed and while I did eat a lot I didn't finish, so I do get to enjoy some for later. Just not as much as I want... I went with the Hibachi chicken and it was great. I wrote my original review (5 stars) 3 years ago. Though the sushi is still good, I've been terribly disappointed in the service. On our last two visits, the waitress was downright nasty. Why? What did I do? I'm kind. I smile. I don't ask for many substitutions, etc., but she acted like I she was doing me a favor (that she didn't want to do). Last night, I asked if I could get my yellowtail scallion roll "inside out". She looked at me like I was speaking gibberish. I apologized and repeated myself, and she all but rolled her eyes. My son went there on a first date (at my recommendation) and was embarrassed by the reception they received. There is sushi in the area that is just as tasty without the attitude. We all should know that I am always pulling hard for the local, independent owned restaurants! Those are really the only places I ever want to eat. So it pains me to have to give Tengu Asian Bistro a "3" here. For me "3" means "solidly mediocre." And the thing that really did this place in was the vibe. I need food AND vibe. (I don't need fancy, in fact I avoid fancy.) The word that I think best describes the vibe here is "desultory." I dined in mid afternoon on a Tuesday, so definitely a quiet/down time and for much of my visit I was the only customer inside. Although they were doing steady take out. There were plenty of employees around (sushi bar, waitstaff, cooks, manager?). There was also zero joy. No one seemed to be enjoying... anything. Employees didn't even speak to each other, let alone me. I own/operate/am-the-only-cook at my own restaurant, so I know about the team dynamic in a restaurant workplace. The space itself is quite nice. I sat at the bar, which is set apart form the small dining room, which also has the sushi bar in it. The whole place is a great size. The menu has a little bit of everything. Which I also am a fan of. You can get sushi, cooked Japanese Steakhouse type items, some Chinese things. I sampled a bunch of items. The only thing I didn't finish were the Singapore Noodles (more on that later). Everything was served hot and straight from the kitchen. Everything was made/cooked to order. Edamame: hot, salty, steamed well. But! The beans themselves had black spots on them, which means they were not as fresh as they could have been. I mean totally okay/edible, but not "preferable." Scallion Pancake: Pretty good. It was kind of a cross between the Korean style (which is my fave!) and the Chinese style. Served with a dipping sauce that was maybe mayo based? Totally tasty. Spicy Imitation Crab Salad: Totally good. Crab Stick tossed with slivered cucumber in spicy mayo type sauce and topped with tempura crunch and tobiko. Pan Seared Vegetable Gyoza: Delicious, nice small size, delicious dipping sauce. Singapore Noodles with Shrimp: I LOVE Singapore Noodles. These were definitely cooked to order, because I heard them cooking them when my order went in. But: way too oily, not flavorful (had zero curry - Singapore Noodles are full of flavor and curry!), noodles over cooked and just fell apart to little bits as I was eating them (noodles should pretty much always be al dente...regardless of the cuisine). This dish is a total fail. Sadly it was the only "main course" type dish I ate. Avocado Roll: I ordered one basic sushi roll just to check out technique. I don't do "big sushi rolls." But I know they are very popular and big sellers. This just was not the sushi place for me. This roll was perfectly fine. Bonus #1: prices are very affordable. Bonus #2: there is a local, family owned soft serve ice cream place right next door! (Kurver Kreme) And you better bet I got a chocolate dip cone for dessert!! I feel like if you come at more "dinner time" other customers will improve the vibe and you can get a perfectly decent meal and drinks. Not terrible. Not great. I was initially very disappointed upon arrival, when the host informed me that there was NO SEATING AT THE SUSHI BAR (which I'd thought was available, as it was visible in a few of the on-line photos I had earlier previewed). Grrr. As a small consolation, the chef still uses this station to prepare sushi, and his work can be seen through most of the main dining area (photo), so I asked to be seated nearby. Not really a problem, as I arrived for a late weekday lunch with only two other diners in the building. My server presented me with a large menu with only a few pages, but lots of photos - confirming my initial expectations as I examined the place setting of a fork, waribashi and paper napkin. My mostly attentive server brought warm tea in a metal pot and plastic teacup. I tried to order some maki and individual nigiri, but several of my choices were not available, which was not surprising. However, I was concerned that after each miss, the server repeatedly tried to recommend the most basic tuna or salmon, "They are very popular." I was hoping she would notice from my requests that I was not looking for a generic entree, one sushi from combo A and one from combo B. Should I take offense that the normal "up-sell" was replaced with a "down-sell"? Meh. In any event, she quickly brought over an acceptable soup, strangely served as very hot in a chilled bowl. As I was waiting for my main, I glanced around at the decor, seemingly focused upon pink flowers, culminating with a seven-foot lighted tree covered in the same, situated in the middle of the dining room. The TV was off in the actual bar, which was walled off from the dining area with a partial glass wall, so the only sounds were a strange collection of American pop music. The main arrived pretty quickly, although the chef forgot one of the nigiri, and had to run over with a third plate. With only two other customers, and no take out, I had hoped this would be a time for the chef to shine, not to make simple mistakes. The main was without any adornment, but on three different styles of plates (photo). While the rice itself was not overly seasoned, the tamago had begun to break apart, and the hotate and ikura seemed only borderline fresh, but edible. I began to see why the server recommended the most popular items, as it may be that these are not popular enough for the chef to order frequently. I hope they realize that they can change their menu and they don't have to sell unwanted or unprofitable items. It's allowed. The maki were the most predictable of the presentation, with bland paste in a not-spicy salmon roll. The remaining nigiri were pleasant enough, and had the usual lack of wasabi under the fish that is too common here in Albany. When I return, I hope that they have returned seating to the sushi bar. So when my "handmade" dumplings come out I know two of those beeps were from these "fresh made " dumplings. And my tempura shrimp!! Had the pleasure of eating at Tengu for dinner last night. I had previously eaten at the bar and that was very good as well, but sitting in the dining room is special. It's a beautiful space and not your average sushi restaurant. It's romantic with the focal point being a beautiful faux cherry blossom tree in the middle of the dining room. The service was excellent. We ordered two appetizers; crab rangoons and rock shrimp. Both were excellent, I loved the rock shrimp- crispy on the outside and sweet shrimp on the inside. The sweet sauce and spicy mayo were the perfect combination. Also ordered shrimp tempura rolls, Philadelphia rolls and chicken fried rice and all were delicious. Tengu did an amazing job remodeling their space and its ambiance, menu and service are top notch. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more dishes from their menu. We came here one night after we noticed it was finally open. We is me, my husband, and my 3 year old. The place was not very full, but it was a weeknight around 8:00 pm, so not surprising. The interior is beautifully done. We were seated right away and the wait staff was very friendly. We started with some vegetarian gyoza. They were delicious and came out piping hot. My husband opted to get some sushi rolls. They were very good sized and he really enjoyed them. I don't really eat sushi so I didn't give them a try, but my kid enjoyed them, which tells me they weren't fishy. I opted for the chicken hibachi meal. While they don't have hibachi tables, the food was just as delicious! The clear soup was good and the chicken that came with the meal was tender. They only gave me the "yum-yum" sauce (the non-soy based one), but it was tasty. The overall portion size was what I'd expect.
