The new Shogun is beautiful. It's refreshing to have a nice place in Toms River that isn't Italian. Their sushi is delicious. I haven't met a roll I didn't like. But the sushi was always good, that hasn't changed. The atmosphere is just much more sophisticated now without the hibachi. I did love their hibachi, but there are soooo many hibachi places in Toms River that I really don't miss that they took it away. The staff is also fantastic. I went there recently with my cousin who is on the paleo diet, and the staff was so helpful, sweet, and accommodating. The chef created a roll for her with all kinds of fish and rolled in cucumber instead of rice. I was just blown away with how much the waitress, manager, and chef wanted to help and actually took time to brainstorm options for her. For that, they get 5 stars. read more

We recently went to Shogun to see what is was like now that it is no longer Hibatchi (thank God!) We sat at the bar on our first visit and just loved the sophisticated atmosphere! The lighting and the decor is wonderful. We shared an order of Japanese Shumai and it was great! My Husband then had Sushi and I had their Jumbo Shrimp with Scallions. The sushi was wonderful and the shrimp were so huge I had to cut them in 3 to eat them! We then went back with friends for dinner and our friends had the Peking Duck and the Filet Mignon & Scallops and they loved it? I had the Jumbo Shrimp Curry and Hubby had the Jumbo Shrimp and Scallions, once again huge shrimp! We had the greatest waiter,Brian, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Afterward we went outside to the covered deck and danced to the Oldies with the Jukebox Legends. They will be there every Thurs. night in the Summer. We plan on going often! read more

Beyond excellent! Each roll is exceptionally crafted, and the fish is typically noticeably extremely fresh. Simply-put: it's sushi nirvana. Frankly after trying about a dozen sushi restaurants in NJ and searching to find the best sushi in Jersey I wholeheartedly believe Shogun ranks in the top 3 for Jersey, if not the best of the state. Absolutely gorgeous renovation that transformed this into a modern art piece; in fact, the appetizers and desserts are no less amazing and no less 'art' than the sushi prepared with care. Along with Shogun Legends these are my two picks for favorite restaurants in the area. Both locations offer the feel of a high-end fine dining establishment in an area where it's rare to see a restaurant offer such high-caliber atmosphere and quality. This place has a really nice ambience. But truthfully the food is just ok. Not great. It's run by non Asians. Even the Sushi is prepared by non Japanese. The quality of the fish was subpar. The avocado in the sushi roll was already browning. Given the location in south jersey it is probably considered pretty good. But relatively speaking it is not that good to get 4 stars sadly. The Chilean sea bass also did not taste fresh. It was a bit chewy. Good Chilean sea bass should be flaky and melt in your mouth. I absolutely used to love this place, moreso than any other restaurant. The people were great, the hibachi was great, it had a great atmosphere, and the staff made you feel at home. Now the restaurant has changed, they whitewashed the staff and the magic is gone. I don't recommend this place anymore, nor have I found a restaurant with hibachi even similar to what they had. Now with Benihana closed in TR, Shogun could have monopolized with their great hibachi, instead it's a wasteland of despair and shattered dreams. read more

This beautiful restaurant site has been totally redecorated, gone are the Japanese hibachi tables. The restaurant has been completely made over with more table seating and a larger bar. The sushi bar has also been expanded. It still has an outdoor patio and large windows overlooking the golf course. It has a private dining room for meetings and parties. The food is Asian fusion similar to that of their other Restaurant Shogun Legends in Wall. The food is fabulous though not inexpensive. The number of duck dishes have been added to the menu including Peking duck. It has a beautiful aquarium with a live coral and many unusual species of sea creatures. I have to give this place 5 stars. It may be a little pricey for the area but worth it. Comparing it with other Asian restaurants around the state, Legends definitely holds their own. We usually come here every couple of months. Enjoy good cocktails and delicious food. I'll go through what we ordered tonight but don't judge us because it was a celebratory dinner. For appetizer we ordered an out of control roll (my favorite), shashimi nachos, and the chicken lettuce wraps (a staple of ours). The nachos were SO GOOD. The avocado was a little brown but I honestly didn't even care. Lettuce wraps are always good but this time there were less crunchy noodles than normal which was disappointing but not enough to dock a star. For dinner we ordered the Singapore noodles, general toss chicken extra spicy (it keeps autocorrecting this and it's frustrating me but you know what I mean), chicken pad Thai (I would go as far to say the best I've ever had), and sesame noodles so some other sushi rolls. My family and I used to go here several times a year and since they renovated I've been back twice and it was a huge disappointment both times. There was plastic in my dessert, the next time it tasted like carboard and ice cream had ice crystals, waiter asked my mom if she wanted a drink and never asked me. Was here on Friday, and had the worst service imaginable literally everything was late after having taking our seats 8:12pm we didn't even get a waitress for a drink order for 15 minutes and waited an additional 30 for our drinks to arrive.... All of our appetizers and entrees came separately with gaps of time between it wasn't an enjoyable outing w friends when one gets their food 10 min before the other... Service couldn't have been ruder.. Simply asked for more sauce and I got a hands whaling in the air "he wants more sauce!!" After moving to the area recently I was in need of a new go to restaurant.... Shogun has turned out to be much more than that! The manager, Kevin, is absolutely amazing! The interaction between him and the clientele is top notch! I've never seen a restaurant manager who is more invested in the happiness of his patrons. I've also been lucky enough to have had Katya as my server on several occasions. Now nothing against any of the other servers but she was amazing! She kept the conversation light every time she would check in, got all of the food and, more importantly, drink orders right and gave phenomenal recommendations on what to order. If you have not been fortunate enough to try this place out I highly recommend doing so! I know I'll be back soon. read more

We tried the Sashimi Nachos which were interesting and tasty, but could've used more of the toro chips. The Out Of Control roll is one of my favorites! The Crispy Whole Fish (Red Snapper) was cooked perfectly crispy and beautifully presented - it turned heads from neighboring tables when it was brought out! The Hong Kong Style Pan Fried Noodles were crispy and provided a nice crunch in contrast to the soft chicken. The Pepper Steak was tender and flavorful with crunchy, ripe peppers. It makes me sad that people don't care about the quality of the food as I do. I love to cook, I take care of my ingredients, and serve only what is delicious. The chefs at Shogun Legacy don't seem to care how ingredients are treated and the waitressing staff don't even pay attention to the food they have to run, hence why the food is cold when it gets to the table. Although they may be more authentic Japanese restaurants up north, Shogun actually has a nice atmosphere, they have a bar, and they are open reasonably late. There aren't too many places of the sort in Toms River. I have to say that it is one of the only places I can think of that will accommodate you for dinner if you arrive at 9 or 9:30 pm in town. The newly designed Shogun is a nice looking restaurant. I sat at the bar and only tried the sushi. I had the uni, unagi, toro, salmon and spicy tuna roll. I also had two Sapporo. First, the sushi was adequate. It was just slightly Better than average. I had a total of about 16 pieces and I was not blown away. Now considering my bill just for me was $100, I expected much better quality. The next time I return, I will order some of the other dishes there. I think that will be a better choice. read more

The atmosphere was great! The live band was amazing and everyone was having a great time. The staff was kind and understanding even over the loud music that was playing outside. The food looked amazing and the price was very reasonable. I did not eat the food. I was there only for the drinks and the band. I will definitely return to try the food. Located overlooking the golf course in Toms River, NJ, the owner spent nearly $4 million dollars to renovate this jewel of a restaurant as he spared no expense. I always loved the Hibachi, which is no longer available. So it was with trepidation, that I tried the new expanded menu. Anything and everything you can imagine is on it. I was pleasantly surprised to find the food is as good as any restaurant in NYC. The sushi is superb and presented in such an appetizing manner; the steaks and seafood, including 3 pound lobsters are quality and taste outrageously delicious. Kudos to the chef for preparing some of the finest dishes you will ever taste. The bar staff of Rich, Aaron & Rob are always warm and friendly. I visited Shogun Legacy this past Saturday. We were quickly sat and had a very attentive waitress. I enjoyed the food and the waitress gave many suggestions on what to get and what she enjoyed most. The soft shell crab appetizer was great as well as the ravioli special. Myself and two other people i was with enjoyed our sushi. Our main problem was the steak my sister-in-law ordered. First off it came out a significant time after we received our sushi. Apparently they have a couple of different kitchens. She asked for medium-rare. When the steak came out it was clearly well done. We notified the waitress who went back to the kitchen to rectify the issue. The steak came out for a 2nd time and it was practically raw on the inside. Now the third time it came back and it was cooked medium rare. We were disappointed obviously since most of us who ordered sushi were already finished. The manager, I believe, came over and apologized for the issue. He gave the four of us free desserts to make up for the steak. We all appreciated it, and it was just unfortunate that it happened. But overall the food, service, and restaurant itself was enjoyable. read more

Since the major transformation, We have went back once, The ambiance is great, open seating, love the big booths, and the selection of drinks. I had the Kobe beef sushi, it was ok, a bit pricey for a roll with 6 pieces and hardly any taste. Had the smoked Tuna and Tuna Tar tar appetizer, found the Tar Tar to be bland, some places ix in a bit of spicy mayo or another sauce. Waiter never checked our water glasses had to constantly call him over or wait until he passed by to get his attention, Ice cream hat ice chunks, and everything was pricier.
