I'm not a Palmdale local, but I think if I was I'd give it five stars. It's a wonderful little restaurant that's kind of hard to find at night but the service was impeccable and the food was wonderful. Fresh fish, delicious miso soup, light and crispy tempura...definitely yummy. I got the three combination plate where you can choose three items and it comes with a salad, rice, and miso soup. The spicy tuna roll was a little different from the typical in L.A. but it was still great. Lots of flavor and just enough burn to make it great. Good food portions, I had leftovers to take home. The food is pricer than what i"m used to, but I attribute that to being in Palmdale and having fresh fish. When we went it was fairly quiet but the waitress there was absolutely wonderful. She took time to make small talk with us and she asked us how we found the restaurant and such. My friend who lives in California City said he would be making the trek down a lot more often for sushi there. I live in Pasadena and have Ichima, Gin, and Tokyo Table 5 minutes away so I'm okay. My husband and I love this place! The ambiance is calming and very relaxing. It's very authentic sushi and not the fast pace, fast food sushi you're use to seeing. The wait time is long (since they only have 1 chef) and the food is quite expensive but the quality is amazing! You won't be disappointed. I grew up eating at very authentic Japanese restaurants, and after dining at Shogun, I was thrilled to find a sushi bar run by actual Japanese people, instead of the Chinese and Koreans who own and run the rest of the sushi places I have been to in the AV. Masa's presentation is fine art; one must stop and admire the artistry the plate for a while before beginning to eat. The sushi is superb; the cuts are the finest and the fish is so fresh you would swear it had come out of the water not an hour before it was served. Masa even knows to put that little slash of wasabi on the rice before laying on the fish. Shogun's rolls and cooked food are tasty as well. This is hands down the best sushi restaurant in the AV. Shogun actually has a real sushi master named Masa, and he is able to make the best sushi you will ever eat. Nothing I have had in LA even compares. Be sure to get the spicy tuna and spicy scallop hand rolls; they are awesome! The staff is extremely friendly, and they really take care of you. I have heard from friends and coworkers how the chef carefully selects the freshest of catches from the warehouse district (little Tokyo) near downtown every morning. I always order to combo that comes with two sides, rice, salad and miso soup. My favorites are gyoza (dumplings), spicy tuna roll, spicy crab roll, shogun roll and assorted tempura. The clear winner is "Salmon marinated in Miso paste". A thinly sliced fillet of salmon that is grilled to perfection such that it melts in your mouth. The fish is so tender that you get the consistency of bass on a salmon while tasting the latter. One of their best kept secrets is the salad dressing ... you can have a full bowl of it and still feel like having more. Even the wasabi is tender and fresh. My wife tried calling in an order for our sons birthday since all he wanted was sushi. The lady taking the order would not understand all we wanted was separate rolls. No lunch specials or combos. She kept asking if we wanted teriyaki and she kept going in circles. Some man got on the phone and started yelling at my wife to just come in and order. The whole point is to place a phone order due to the Coronavirus. He kept yelling and told my wife then we get no food and hung up. We will not order from a place with no class or manners. We just visited there with a large party. Three of us had the shrimp and calamari tempura meal, only that it wasn't a meal. There were like 5 breaded pieces on a tiny plate. No soup, no veggie, no egg roll with it for $14. Some people in our party ordered sushi with only 2 pieces on the plate for $9 (incl. a hair). Service was very slow. We were not impressed. I am very impressed with the quality of the fish, I am giving it a four and not five due to the very high price. My bill was over fifty dollars just for me. For the price, the portions are too small. The atmosphere was cozy, uni was fresh, you can see them freshly batter and cook your tempura shrimp (if you sat at the bar), the hot tea was freshly made with your own personal tea pot and loose leaf green tea, the California rolls are NOT, I repeat, are NOT FAKE crab! They are real crab rolls...The way it should be...Last thing, if you like your rolls smothered in mayo, teriyaki sauce, and all those other bad for you sauces, then you better go else where, this place is for people who like sushi! Best sushi you can get in the AV. I've been a regular at places like Big Tuna and Goldfish. One night, my girlfriend said that she remembered a great sushi place that she used to go to with her mom. When I called, I was told there was no all you can eat option. At first, I didn't like this. But after eating there, I can see why they don't do all you can eat. The quality is outstanding. If you want FRESH fish, this is the place to go! I have had other sushi in So. Cal. and none of them compare to the freshness at Shogun. I will admit that the service is a bit slow and they are not the most personable, but I attribute that to culture. But honestly, it is kind of nice to have time to have conversation at the table instead of being rushed through a meal. The Antelope Valley has a few sushi bars with very outgoing sushi chefs but most of them are not Japanese and have not been as highly trained. If I want a party with decent food I will go to those, but if I want amazing fish, I will go to Shogun every time. I am not sure if anybody has mentioned it here, but the sushi chef drives to the fish market in LA everyday to buy fresh fish. Accordingly, they are closed on Sunday because the fish market is closed. I have been there once where they didn't have a certain fish I wanted but was informed that the selection was not up to his standards so he did not purchase it that day. While I was disappointed that I couldn't have it, I respected the fact that he wasn't going to serve me something he didn't think was prime. read more

I've been to Japan many, many times and have eaten in hundreds of great restaurants all over the country. Nothing I've had there beats Shogun! Masa-san is a perfectionist who only serves you the very best. Mieko-san and the other servers are wonderful. You get what you pay for, so expect it to be a little higher than in some places, but the portions are good and the quality is well worth the price. The best miso soup anywhere, the salad dressing is to die for, and the sushi (not the rolls - get the real thing!) is the best I've had anywhere. The vegetable tempura is outstanding as well, in addition to all of the salmon dishes (miso, teriyaki, and golden - all excellent). If you're looking for an outstanding Japanese meal and you're not in a hurry (quality takes time), this is the place to go. read more
