The best sushi I have ever had. It's a little hole in the wall type place but dont let that fool you. It's amazing. This place has been around for a long time and there's a reason for it. It's a small restaurant with not a whole lot of seats. Usually only 2 servers. It gets really packed so you might wait a bit for service. Their sushi is very traditional. There are no baked rolls or fancy shmancy items. The dynamite is not a roll, but a seafood bake of broccoli, asparagus, mushrooms, scallop, shrimp in some kind of mayo sauce. This thing is phenomenal. I dream of it. Secret menu tuna scallop is another of my favorites. The albacore is so soft and tender, it breaks with just my tongue. I was in town for work and had an opportunity to come see Ms. Mieko for lunch. It was nice to see her behind the counter still in action. She told me that she is now the one that goes to the fish market. The fish they serve continues to be high quality, Masa-san would be proud. Tried the miso salmon and it was cooked perfectly. The miso was not overpowering and there were nicely crusted edges to add texture to the flaky, yet moist salmon. They had items that weren't listed on the lunch menu so just be sure to ask if you're looking for something specific. Shogun continues to be a no-frills sushi spot that focuses on their product instead of kitschy decoration. Come here if you like your sushi NOT drenched in eel sauce and spicy mayo. read more

First time here and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is small and quaint with traditional yet minimal Japanese decor. The two servers/waitresses were welcoming and attentive. I ordered the dinner #9. Sushi & Sashimi Albacore, Eel, White Fish, and Scallop Sushi. Plus Tuna, Yellowtail Salmon Sashimi and a side of miso soup and salad (next time I'm doubling up on the miso). Also ordered Octopus, squid, halibut and Amberjack sushi, the broiled Chilean sea bass marinated in miso paste (sorry no pic I devoured that hot bass) and two side orders of their miso soup to go. My bestfriend and I are on a mission to go on more sushi dates, and Shogun is definitely a hidden gem! After hearing so much about it over the years, we finally had the chance to try it out. We didn't have a reservation, but our waitress was fantastic and quickly found us a table for two. To kick things off, we enjoyed two glasses of Plum Wine and baked mussels, which were absolutely delicious. We're big fans of Nigiri, so we decided on Tuna, Yellowtail, and Salmon. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful - each bite was a delight. Our bestie date night was a total success, and we can't wait to return. Here's my update. Last night we decided to celebrate our daughter's birthday here. Shougun broke my heart. What's worse is I hype this place up to literally EVERYONE I talk to about sushi. So we had a small party of 8. One person was not a sushi fan so I thought, "great, here is a chance to make a show off some great sushi ". So we got our appetizers. Red flag number one, the seaweed salad portion was lacking ingredients and the portion size of a golf ball. Just plane seaweed, no other ingredients or garnish. Shrugged off, the other appetizers were good. Everyone orders. About 8 different rolls. They come out, and they literally looked and tasted EXACTLY the same. I asked my daughter if they all ordered 8 of the same rolls. Listen, I wish, I WISH I was exaggerating. They ordered about 4 or 6 (different) more roles after we finished the first, and guess what? They looked exactly the first 8 and they all tasted the same. I ordered some Toro, which they ran out of and literally gave scraps along tge 2 pieces of sushi... Well, they cant all be homeruns I guess. But when I look at their pictures, and remember what we were got? It pissed me off. I was disappointed and after a $600 (we had alot of Sake too) bill, hey guess who won't be going here for a while. From now on, the only thing I'll say about this place is how good they used to be and that I don't go. One more thing. Since we started going here, they've swapped out waitresses twice. I mean they only have one helping because its mostly family. The reason this bugs me is because it seems when we finally got to know the first one, she remembered us and knew what we liked they replaced her, Same thing with the 2nd one. Best sushi in Antelope Valley. I would rather come here than any other sushi place in the valley. Delicious crab sunomono: sea salty fresh crab, vinegar zing, crunchy cucumber and conjack. It also, has a generous amount of kombu, but I don't personally like it. You might enjoy it. Miso soup is good. Simple; does not mess up the good ingredients. I personally like a more complex miso soup, but this exceeds nost other places in Antelope Valley. This place is light on the Americanized dishes. Not sauce heavy. The fish is the star of the show. Japanese sized portions: a good bite or two. Table next to us having trouble with the *raw* fish and lack of baked or deep fried rolls. Kappa maki was good. The masago was acceptable. The scallop hand roll was delicious. The hirame and tai were acceptable, but at home we're spoiled for sushi because we live next to a fishing fleet. Toro was good, but a few degrees too cold. Palmdale has lost a truly iconic Japanese culinary outpost. No " county fair clown" Sushi using Sriracha, mayonnaise, "eel sauce" being poured on at every turn to cover up the poor, cheap quality fish being used.  Therefore, expect to pay way more for having the privilege of experiencing the fine, subtle flavours of high end seafood. However, the Sushi portions here are huge to create better quality/price compared to most traditional Sushi in Los Ángeles.   0) Tempura Moriawasè:  String beans Japanese Kabocha  Sweet Potato Broccoli Asparagus Èbi Sushi: 1) Hiramè: Clean, soft, white meat. Dry astringency to refresh the palate.  There are 6 other Sakè (sah keh) choices as shown in my photos. On our way up to Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, stopped by this establishment for some lunch. Small, hole in the wall like place but truly the good quality meal we had in a long time. The server and chef are Japanese. The server was friendly and patient, provide with good service. Although there were no kids meal, she provided with a fork and kids plate. The meal was quite pricey based on location and portion. However, it made up on service and quality. The sashimi fish were thick and meaty. Money well spent in the middle of nowhere. First time back since the closing and loss of Chef Massa. We went for lunch and they no longer have the full menu. The lunch menu was nice and had good selections. The miso soup is the best we've had. The service is impeccable as always. Same intimate, comfortable setting with just a few tables. The sushi was fresh and tasty, just not the same as we remember. We didn't feel like we were having the same special meal. Maybe it's the lunch menu, but the temperature of the fish wasn't as perfect and the roll just wasn't as memorable as before. I had high hopes for Shogun given the reviews are great, but the experience was extremely average at an above average price.

Now I just got off leaving a bad experience somewhere else and decided to make it up by getting us over to a KNOWN excellent place in town. Hidden in an alcove on Q-6 you will see a discrete signage indicating a Japanese style place called Shogun. Not much fanfare here, but just a very modest tiny place that is a prime example of Japanese style dining. Modest, but laser accurate and cleaner than your local surgery room. We walk in and are pleasantly welcomed and seated in one of the big booths in the dining room. The bar is closed due to the Covid crap but you can see clearly the efficient storage of fish in the coolers and every counter is as clean as can be. We have menus given and there are a good selection of traditional authentic sushi as well as a few things that non hardcore sushi eaters can enjoy as well. I noticed this place doesn't have a steak on the menu though or beef that I could see and I was a tiny bit surprised as many of the high end sushi places I been to still had a beef offering. They have chicken though too. I don't order it but I did taste it and it was VERY good. Not overcooked and the teriyaki was authentic taste and not like what you taste out of a bottle etc... I ordered an assorted sashimi and a few sides one of Uni and another Unagi. The fish was clean cut and tuna no ligaments or anything, although not Toro (I didn't order Toro), it was an excellent cut of fish. as was the halibut and the salmon too. Top notch cuts that taste fresh and melt in your mouth soft. The dinner comes with salad and miso and they are both fresh and excellent tasting. The food here is special, its done with precision, its intentional how everything is placed, this place are articulate in how the make the dishes and it shows. They seem to take time in making details count. I cannot describe much but it is like some sort of their own design that they are always consistently delivering. The unagi was fresh and cooked perfect with that little gristle edges and eel sauce on it just sweet as needed. The Uni was cold and wrapped with crunchy seaweed paper and had a taste of the sea with a touch of salt. Just as good as what I would have in Tokyo myself. I have had Sushi in many Asian countries including Japan, and this place even though in Palmdale, its on par with some of the best. Hard to convince folks, but it is definitely true. The rice - Now the rice is where I get critical. Rice for me is very different between the various types of Asian foods. Hawaiian rice is one level of puffy and sticky where Japanese sushi rice is different. Shogun really is accurate to authenticity in the rice type and done ness and how its prepared. It is just the right amount of sticky without overdoing it. The flavor is amazing. Now on some bad news, I always like to get Tamago. They had no Tamago. Tamago is an ALWAYS for me in Sushi outings, its the barometer for me many times on some of the skillful prepped items. So not having a Tamago hits me in the heart. I also tried to order sweet shrimp. This is less of a letdown because this is sometimes hard to come by. I don't know the sweet shrimp season, bit I do know the prep and they have to be live etc. etc. so I cant knock them for not having that here. Also how many folks in Palmdale ordering sweet shrimp anyways right? So all in all I think this is hands down the best sushi in AV, and absolutely in top 3 for restaurants in AV altogether. It is much higher quality than the places I go to in SCV as well. You do have to kind of suffer the consequences of the location and that reflects in the choice they have to keep some items on the roster... That's the only drawback but Tamago I think should be there since it is just egg. But the prep is taking careful work though. The prices here reflect the quality. If you are concerned, then you shouldn't be here. I wanted to throw 5 stars down. But I just cannot due to Tamago. If you don't care about an egg sushi, this is absolutely 5 stars all day long. read more

Well, that's it for me. After my wife and I went to Shogun Sushi, nothing else compares. Most everyone knows Shogun, but for those that haven't gone yet, be prepared. It's a small restaurant, seating for maybe 40 people (counter seating currently closed). The menus have no photos, and it seems to be a straight forward, no frills kind of establishment. But the simplicity belies the quality of the food. It's a bit on the pricey side, and make sure you're with someone that you can have a good conversation with, because it takes a bit for the food to arrive. But you pay for, and wait for quality. Also, I'd like to point out that the wait staff were absolutely lovely. They kept coming by to make sure our drinks were topped up, and check in on how we were enjoying the meal. The owner seems to be the only one making the actual sushi, and to watch him work is to watch a master at their craft. As I said, quality deserves patience.
