This review is for their OYSTER ramen. It is amazing! Also, I've never even seen oyster ramen on the menu at other ramen spots in jersey. What we ordered: - Chicken Karaage - Japanese deep fried chicken w/ garlic soy sauce - Agedashi Tofu - deep fried tofu in yuzu fashion with Katsuobyshi, scallions, and Japanese mayo - Tonkotsu Ramen - Shoyu Ramen The service was fine. The woman helping us was sweet but couldn't really explain the dishes well but was helpful if we wanted to make adjustments. We did not know what the tofu dish was and asked for some clarification but was just told it was fried tofu and that it was good. We didn't know what was really on it but we ordered it anyways. We didn't enjoy it but were happy we tried it. I thought my ramen was fine, not my favorite but no complaints. My friend didn't like her ramen so she asked for hot sauce, sriracha, and soy sauce to spice it up and the server was confused at first but was fine bringing it over once we clarified what we wanted. We also didn't love the karaage chicken. All in all, we enjoyed our visit there and appreciated trying something new. They give cute little cat shaped chopstick holders. We will not likely be back because it wasn't to our liking but think it is just personal taste not that the place was bad so we do recommend trying it for yourself. Shokudo sits in a little strip between a Rita's and a UPS Store. A cutely decorated resturant with a sweet older lady to greet you. But the issue I have lies with the food, which is the most important element of any resturant. My fiancee ordered a Tonkotsu Ramen while I ordered the Chicken Donburi. My rice bowl was flavorless, I needed to add siracha to finish half of it, the other half I left. As for the ramen, the broth was creamy but not rich with flavor as you would expect which was highly disappointing. The food lacked flavor and substance. We will definitely not be coming back. I enjoyed my meal at Shokudo. The vegetable miso ramen was flavorful and came in a large bowl. My only request next time would be for more toppings, the pieces of tofu were very thinly sliced and I would have liked to have some more. I came by Shokudo to grab dinner with a couple friends! I love the general aesthetics of the restaurant from their wall art to the cat chopsticks holders!! I've been here before and have tried their ramen dishes which I've enjoyed. I was craving some udon this time so I got the shrimp tempura nabe udon while my friend ordered the chicken donburi. Got a tonkatsu ramen, which had a fairly light broth. Interestingly I believe they used Chinese cabbage in the broth, which added a nice crunch. Noodles were wavy and firm, which I liked. I went for the takeout miso ramen. It was packaged so that the noodles, meat and veggies were separate from the broth. The broth was tasty and the vegetables were fresh. Compared to other ramen I had it was okay, there was less pork in this ramen than I have had from other restaurants. I came here with some friends since this restaurant is near Rutgers. The restaurant is very clean and has it's cute aesthetics that remind me of home. One of the walls have a television that plays Naruto is the background which I thought was pretty interesting. The waitresses and staff members were all very welcoming and friendly. I ordered a Miso ramen when I went. Even though it was one of the simpler dishes, it took around 20-30 minutes to come out. All my friends already got their ramen and we're half finished, but I did not receive mine yet. A waitress came and apologized saying that they are making the ramen now and it will come out shortly. They didn't realize my dish was still missing. They were very apologetic, and gave a choice of a free side dish on the house. The ramen itself was alright, I definitely had better miso ramens elsewhere. Although the ramen doesn't look like a lot in the photo, the bowl was pretty steep. This is the place to go for a restaurant with great tasting food, great decor, excellent customer service, great value and very good food. The gyoza was nicely steamed and pan fried, chicken karaage was dark meat that was nicely fried and good flavor (not seasoned as much as I prefer but good), the spicy ramen used thin noodles and were good, and the pork bowl was excellent with a very nice sauce with a hint of garlic and I think ginger. What an adorable restaurant! The walls are decorated with classic Japanese anime/movie posters, and the restaurant as a whole has a very inviting and relaxed vibe to it. I tried the oyster ramen, which had a creamy and flavorful pork broth and included delicious little raw oysters in it to give it an even richer flavor. I also shared the karaage, agedashi tofu, and small chicken donburi with a few others, and we enjoyed them all! We particularly liked the agedashi tofu, which came with six fried tofu cubes in a light yuzu dashi broth all topped with bonito and seaweed. Also, the chicken donburi is definitely worth sizing up as an entree option - the small made for a good side to share, but I would happily eat a larger portion as a meal next time. Hopefully that doesn't confuse many people. We were immediately seated as they weren't very busy. For apps we started with some fried Gyoza $4 and Shumai $5 and also the Agedashi Tofu $5 The Pork Gyoza was my favorite 5 Fried dumplings served with a sweet and sour soy dipping sauce. The Shumai was good as well 6 pieces with a house made soy sauce. The Tofu I didn't personally try as I'm not a fan but my fiancé loved it and it did look delicious... 6 deep fried tofu pieces in Yuzu dashi with Katsuobushi, scallions, and Japanese mayo. We both had Ramen I had their special Tonkotsu Ramen $10.95 It had a rich and creamy pork broth that was very flavorful (I just added salt) The Pork was also very tasty and it had a nice amount of noodles. I think it was a good portion size. I would definitely order this again. My fiancé had the spicy Miso ramen $11.95 he said it was very good with the right amount of spice. My best-friend and I came here to try out this new restaurant. The staff is friendly and nice; they do not rush you to order your food. Edamame: It needs some work because it was too mushy and not enough salt. Spicy pork bun: Has enough flavor and just the right taste. Seaweed salad: tastes good just like any where else that has seaweed salad. Pork donburi rice: Pork is cooked right and delicious when mixed together. Tonkotsu ramen: Has just the right flavor and delicious in every way. The creamy broth gives it a kick and drank all of the soup base. Tiny unassuming ramen and udon place from the outside, went in looking for a snack. Ordered a small pork rice bowl, and was told it would take 15min. I wasn't allowed to wait indoors, but the staff was nice enough to come out and find me in my car to let me know it was ready. Pork was savory, grilled with the a solid touch of char, and was simply garnished with sesame seeds and nori over rice. Everything was delicious. Starting with the ramen - the serving size is small, but you can get it with the extra noodles (~$3 more), and other additions. The 24 hour broth was the best we have had. The pork was flavorful (it came with only 2 small slices...it would have been nice to have more. Ramen was perfectly done. They make up for the quantity with quality. The fried chicken is pieces of dark meat, nice flavor and comes with a dipping sauce. The rice bowl was also delicious. Prices were fair, but the portion sizes were a bit small. I highly recommend all three of these dishes if you are good with spicy foods. If not, it's okay because my friends seemed to have liked their other ramens! I'm gonna start by saying if you remember ramen noodle ( a ramen shop over by Middlesex county college that closed down earlier this year) you're going to get very familiar videos from this place, but way better. The menu is easy to understand so you can't stay looking forever at what you want to eat and the food itself didn't take long at all to be made and delivered. Anika( sorry it I spelled it wrong) made the experience so enjoyable and recommended me the chicken karaage and tonkatsku ramen and it was delectable and perfectly prepared. The ramen doesn't come with egg but it's 1$ extra and it's well worth it. The spicy sauce you order on the side is top notch nose-hair burning goodness and the sauce for the karaage chicken makes you want to keep eating more and more. I think I've found my permanent ramen spot again and thank god it's so close to home this time around. This was me and my family's 1st time here . They are located in a small strip mall in Pway close to Walmart. It's a cute little spot with nice decor. It's not all that big ,but average to most Ramen spots I've been to. Now I have had many and I mean many bowls of Ramen and although they serve a decent bowl it I wasn't all that impressed with the bowls. Tonkatsu bowl wasn't that flavorful and the pork wasn't that "fall apart piece of meat" like it should be. The shio Ramen was ok but also lacked that salty flavor and the pork also was a issue. The Spicy Ramen was good and had a fair amount of heat . The oyster Ramen was pretty good with a fairly flavorful broth with some raw oysters on top. Based on all the good Yelp reviews we decided to try Shokudo. A friend and a family member both tried the restaurant separately and gave me completely different reviews on this place so I knew I'd have to go see for myself. We arrived to the restaurant about 7:30 and it was pretty quiet - only two other small tables were seated. We were given water in a bottle and some menus. We decided on tonkotsu ramen (egg is an extra charge $1.95), tempura udon, donburi bowl, and chicken karage. Chicken karage was good, it's the only thing I truly enjoyed fully (it needed to be served with a lemon but it only came with a sauce). Pork donburi bowl was okay, probably the next best thing I had but I didn't love it. The "24 hour" tonkotsu ramen came out and it looked like the right color but upon further inspection the broth was thin and not as thick as other good tonkotsu broths. The flavor definitely lacked depth and thickness that true pork bone broths typically have. I was disappointed but it was certainly edible just not amazing. The udon was really quite disappointing. The tempura was absolutely by far the worst shrimp tempura I have ever had in my entire life. I've been to buffets that serve mass tempura better then this. I'm sad to say that this should not have been served. The batter was bouncey and soft and the outside had NO crispness to it. The inside was still kind of wet like the inside of an uncooked pancake. My husband felt that the waitress was avoiding us a bit because I wanted to report it but she did not check on us until the end of the meal and at that point she said she would let the chef know about my concern. I really wanted an explanation for this tempura that had absolutely no tempura flakes. It was dipped in unsweetened pancake batter at best. I won't be coming back based on this experience but I hope they continue to make improvements in the things that weren't right. read more
