Came here yesterday to take advantage of the outdoor dining they had available, the wait was about 20-25 minute with no reservation on a Saturday night. The cost per person for the all you can eat buffet is 35.95 which does not include any drinks, you would think for that price they would at least include soda or tea. The all you can eat buffet includes sushi, rolls and seafood and meat bbq, There's a large variety to chose from. Some of the highlights were the scallops and the cooked salmon teriyaki which was pretty good and the takoyaki wasn't the worst. However there were more misses than hits for me, the kani salad was all tempura flakes and probably two tiny shreds of kani in it, the salmon sushi (sashimi is not included in the ayce) the rice came out HOT which is not a good thing when it comes to sushi because it changes the temperature of the fish so my salmon was just hot raw salmon (disgusting), the miso eggplant was way two sweet thst it wasn't even edible, additionally our drinks took forever to come that we decided to cancel one of their juices and the staff said okay they would cancel and still charged us for it even though they never brought it to us. ‍ we didn't realize till we left. Service was adequate there was enoguh staff walking around to assist if you needed. I think including tax, tips and the soda/juice it came out to be about $50 per person. I would recommend their rolls over their sushi, any place that puts hot rice on raw salmon needs to reevaluate their sushi game. I thought the outdoor seating was nice, it wasn't too cramped and there isn't a lot of plants so there were little to no bugs, however I don't think I would crave to come back any time soon and i am not sure if it was worth $50. Happy to see the restaurant is open! I looove this place! I live right next door and have been to the restaurant 3 times since it reopened. Opening week, they provided free Japanese unlimited beer (which is done now sadly) but what a great time! The owner and his son, Andrew (I believe), are so welcoming and sweet. The meats are delicious, just the right portions and the sushi is fresh and yummy. The atmosphere is very picturesque, you sit in the patio with cute lights and pretty social distanced from other tables. They do temperature checks at the door, have hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes at every table! My only feedback would be to add more sides to the menu. read more

Yessssss!!!!!! They reopen!!!!!! I haven't been out eating for months and now is the tome to support our local businesses! I reserved 6:30 for a table for two, got seated in right after we arrived. And I'm super surprised they have everything that I ask on the menu. You know usually for business just start reopen or soft opening they don't serve full menu. Once we arrived, the staff test our temperature, guide us in, and we saw hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes on the table. They are fully prepared. The mics provided weren't enough but we just took turns. Interestingly enough we also had a mic stand which was on a stage like section. We ordered a bunch of meat and veggies and after we were finished some of our friends got a stomachache as we were leaving. The meat isn't fresh compared to other bbq places. Maybe we got a bad batch or something. On the good note, they do offer free pitchers! It just so happened that one of our friends knew the owners son and told him what our experience was and instead of providing good customer service he told us "don't come back we don't want you here" simply for sharing our opinion. They have beautiful outdoor dining inside self contained booths that sits 5 people with large exhaust fan and grill on table with plastic walls and doors in a lovely outdoors garden. Food was good and service was very fast. It's all you can eat BBQ and sushi. The sushi is ok but they had a good selection of beef, also lamb chops, pork, chicken, seafood and vegetables to grill for $38 each adult and $18 per child. It's well worth the money and I'll go back again. One of the best outdoor dining space for Covid I have seen so far. The indoor space is lovely and unique in a modern Asian theme. There aren't many places like Shokunin, which offers both AYCE Japanese BBQ and sushi. My friends and I finally got the chance to try this place out the other week. Upon walking in, you're immediately engulfed with an apparent meat aroma and once our party sat down, we were greeted with greasy tables, which was to be expected at a BBQ place like this. They offer several cuts of meat here, as well as grilled goodies, seafood, veggies, appetizers and sushi. For about $36 (tax and tip not included) you're entitled to order everything off the menu with the premium items included. My personal favorite was their marbled beef cubes because it was the most appetizing and the fat to meat ratio was pretty evenly distributed. This was especially delicious when cooked medium rare was just a slight sear on the outside with the inside being slightly pink. Other meats worth mentioning were their signature beef, New York strip steak, Angus beef rib and the black pepper kalbi. All the meats paired wonderfully with the soy and chili sauces provided table side. Grilled pineapple makes an effective palette cleanser between each cut of meat. As for the seafood options, I enjoyed the scallops, oysters and Argentinean shrimp. The scallops came in small tin tray and was cooked over the grill. I especially liked the garlicky and buttery sauce it came with. I also had about 15-20 eel rolls off of their sushi menu, because why not? The rolls were pretty standard and there wasn't anything really special about them. There was a huge amount of rice for each roll and I wasn't a big fan of that. Do keep in mind that only the sushi is AYCE, while their sashimi offerings are charged by piece. Overall as a meat lover, I enjoyed my first experience here at Shokunin. The staff did a great job cutting, flipping and serving the meat table side to us and were friendly. The also offer rooms with karaoke for larger parties. Ask the staff for their rates. read more

I visited tonight with my family - 6 adults and 1 baby - and had a great time! Since it was a weeknight and obviously during the pandemic, they weren't busy. When we arrived, our temperature was checked and the host escorted us to a private room which was a pleasant surprise! Because we were with a baby, they wanted us to have our own space, which made the experience even more enjoyable. While we live in the neighborhood, we were skeptical for visiting for the longest time as we heard it wasn't good when they first opened, but a friend came recently and recommended us to give Shokunin a try! The food was good, and our waitress was really polite, friendly, and extremely attentive. We ordered a variety of items across the menu and wasn't disappointed with anything. I decided to come here with my friend to try out because the concept of having AYCE sushi and BBQ is amazing. Except, only after trying out this place, did we start regretting coming. The biggest issue I have with this place is the food. Every single meat we ordered tasted dry and extremely difficult to chew. I honestly had to question myself whether we are actually paying 40+ dollars for this "premium" option which honestly didn't feel very premium at all. I've tried most of their item and none of them really hit the spot and make you satisfied to justify the price. The sushi was also terrible. It was just a giant roll of rice and you had to pay 1 dollar for every sashimi you order which honestly seems dumb. I'm honestly surprised some people in the review thought the food tasted good. They probably never tried actual food before. If anything, the food tasted like the ones you can buy from those outdoor BBQ carts on a stick you see in Chinatown or 8 ave and those cost like a dollar a stick, which you are paying nearly 40 dollars for in this place. The service also confuses me. At one point we were getting decent service, then the next it's almost as if we didn't exist. When I came into the store, there were only around 2 tables of customer since we came in around noon. So there shouldn't really be any excuses to why our service was so bad. They were rushing as if the restaurant was busy when there was nearly no one else besides my table in the store. We were served both cold food and burnt food which is just disappointing. Vibe: The restaurant is surprisingly spacious. There are indoor and outdoor seatings as well as private rooms with karaoke. Cleanliness: Overall, the restaurant is unsanitary. The tables and seats were extremely greasy. The floors were sticky too. The employees grill foods and complete other tasks at the same time, so the gloves they use to touch the doorhandles and other things become oily. Unfortunately had a very bad experience here on Christmas Eve - and were treated poorly due to their manager's racism! Despite placing a reservation, and confirming that reservation, we arrived to find that they would not honor it. Why? "We don't take Yelp reservations anymore" despite the fact that they are enrolled in the program and received our confirmation. When we asked then why the Yelp reservation was an option on their site, they had no response but to give us a card with their contact information for "next time" (LOL) (I will note that as of the day I'm writing this review, there is still the option to place a Yelp reservation! Hmmm....) They then made no effort to correct THEIR mistake and made us wait for 30 minutes before we took our business elsewhere! They kept stalling and saying "ten more minutes" - truly, I think they had no intention of seating us and were just forcing us to leave. We strongly believe their poor treatment of us was because one member of our group is Black. I learned later that the manager looked at him in disgust when we entered - we should have left right then and there. There will not be a "next time" for us and strongly encourage others to take notice of this review! I always take reviews with a grain of salt but felt compelled to share my experience. So I have been wanting to take my family out (including a 4 and 6year old kids) for dinner (so a private room would be perfect - no crowds and more space for the kids). I called to make a reservation a few days in advance for a karaoke room at 6pm on a Saturday. The girl said they have a lot of reservations the coming Saturday, so I asked "what about at 5:30, will a room be available?" She said "oh yes, if you can get here at 5:30pm, we can give you a room". When we arrived promptly at 5:30pm, the server walked us to a table (not into a room)...so I said we reserved for a room and she went to check the appointment book (which is just a spiral notebook) and told me our reservation was NOT for a room. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed and did not have a backup place to go (and two hungry kids whining)! I felt the hostess was also trying to blame me for the misunderstanding. But when I called, the girl informed me there is a min spend of $338 (which we are ok) and I even asked what kind of cleaning/measures they have in place for COVID with regards to the mics and tables etc. The whole time I was asking about reserving for a room! So why did my reservation not show that? While I understand we are all humans and mistakes happen but should I have asked for a written confirmation that my reservation (for a room) has been booked??? Because showing up and expecting for a room (and not given one was just unacceptable). It was ridiculous that they didn't even try to complement us with free drinks! The table was tight, and there were grilled pieces when we sat down (had to wipe down everything). Sushi rolls were mostly rice, meat were flavorless. Servers were pretty attentive so we gave 18% tips because we didn't want the servers to be penalized for management/operational errors! Not impressed at all. read more

My last visit was this past Sunday with my bf and his mom (her first visit). She loved the menu and options available. Every thing was perfect. They've added wine and soju for purchasing with meals and the menu addition were AMAZING! I love their bbq corn and will always bring it up but the salmon is also stuck in my mind as well. I love that it's family owned and they are very involved and friendly. This has been my favorite restaurant for 2019!! I've been here about 10 times this year and each time is better then the last. Great place for asian Bbq with a group. We had reservations for 12 and 3 toddlers at 6pm on a Saturday. Got the VIP room, which includes two table grill area, 2 hours of food, and karaoke! It was comfortable and spacious. Food and service was great. Staff was attentive and were readily available to serve us and take our orders. Menu was clear and descriptive, with notes on what items had extra up charge or not. Many options of meats and veggies to grill. There was a good variety of appetizers as well. Eggplants was awesome. Sushi was decent. We were more focus on the meats. Good quality cuts of meats. Forgot to ask which meats were which at times because we ordered a lot. Timing that foods came out was quick. **Rating would be a 3.5*** Honestly, I was super excited to try this place because it was all you can eat and it was super close to my house. My boyfriend also went here before and he said really good things about this place. I went here for my birthday dinner and I was not very impressed. They do have a wide variety of meats and they also have sushi / appetizers which are all you can eat as well. My favorite apps were the Crab Sandwich and Tuna Martini which were delicious and pretty unique in my opinion. The rest of the apps were just okay, nothing too special or unique. I liked the beef options that were already pre-marinated, they had really good flavor. The portions that they come out in are pretty small though, compared to other AYCE bbq places. They do cook it for you and that's were we ran into a bit of a problem with our server. I am not sure if the heat was too high but originally some of the meat pieces that he had cooked for us was burnt so we politely asked him to make it less cook or lower the heat but he just ignored our comments and continued to cook it as he originally did it and we ended up with a brunch of burnt meat which we were not a fan off. I'm not sure if he was new or not, because after they changed the server everything was fine and normal and the meats were pretty good and flavorful. Overall, I think this place was alright and that the price tag is a little high for the quality and the taste of the food. It came out to be about $190 for four people, which I thought was a tad bit expensive for AYCE in Brooklyn. We never tried the sushi here but have seen people order it, looks like they do add a lot of rice so if ure a rice person, thatll be good (and filling). The restaurant is comfortable. The food is great and overall everything is great. Everything was worth the money. The experience there was fun since it's a perfect place for eating BBQ. My favorite items there were the Saikou Kalbi Short ribs, New York Strip Steak, Angus beef ribs and their other Kalbi short ribs. Unlike the other reviews, I didn't necessarily have a problem with the service of the waiters. We were seating right as we got there, but I can see how others might be annoyed at the service. The restaurant is located in a predominantly asian neighborhood so most of the servers speak to you in mandarin if you're asian. There's a language barrier if you don't understand chinese though. Recommendations: The sushi wasn't bad, but I don't think it's worth it to spend most of your time on it. Their rolls are FULL of excess rice, which is probably their attempt of filling you up. There's probably more rice than there is ingredients in the rolls. Also the eel and shrimp tempura came out cold, which I don't prefer--warm would be ideal. As for the bbq, we ordered a random selection of beef and it was rather disappointing. All the meat was too chewy, no matter how short or long we cooked it for with the exception of two meats. One of them was the yaki shabu beef-- it was thinly sliced and delicious. All the meats were marinated nicely, but they should work on the chewiness. It was such a work out to get through all the meats since we had to spend so much time chewing!!! I don't recommend coming here unless it's for a special occasion because it's really pricey-- around 36$ per adult for decent food. The presentation of the restaurant and the food was amazing aside from taste. Service: They are extremely attentive, but again there's a language barrier for the most part. They have a large variety on their menu. But the grill platform itself is tiny so you can only cook so much at once. Sashimi cost extra money so I couldn't try their sashimi. I made reservations to come here with two other friends and I must say we are utterly impressed with our dinning experience here. We ordered a a bunch of the beef and seafood for the grill, and a few appetizers on the side. The appetizer were okay, but that was not what I came for. I came for the Japanese BBQ and got everything I was hoping for. The meats were very fresh and the cuts were excellent. It was John(the owner) who served us and he even gave us a little insight to his bbq techniques. I must say he is very passionate about this and you can definitely tell from equality of the food that he serves. I f you are looking for a good, quality Japanese bbq spot in Brooklyn, then look no further. This is the place to go. Without a doubt I would be coming back again. With that said, I would stay away from the sushi tho. It's fresh but it just doesn't even compare to the meats and the peeled garlic oil shrimp(must try if you go).
