Big 5 Seafood Restaurant is a really great classic Cantonese restaurant nestled in the heart of Dyker Heights. We came here for and early weekend Lunar New Year luncheon and enjoyed it so much we decided to return in a few weeks for a private room to celebrate my niece's birthday. The dishes were excellently prepared, quick, and delicious -- the dishes weren't unnecessarily salty and generally not excessively oily (two qualities that usually are attributed to lower quality Chinese eateries). The food was beautifully presented in an authentic way and the service was quick. A solid 3.75 for me, mostly because of the food, which tasted pretty good overall. Some dishes might be over seasoned or under seasoned. It's definitely more for the local Chinese Cantonese folks. You can get the banquet-style dishes here with your family. Like usual, oranges and tong sui dessert soup comes at the end of the meal. There are two private rooms upstairs and minimum charge is $480 (it sits 10 people comfortably). Read the review on this restaurant. So decided to give it a try for a birthday dinner. This restaurant is not that big, but we could sit comfortable and very spacious. We did the preorder the crab claw, it was just ok. Nothing special, I though it could be a wow. Overall all the dishes that we order, is ok. There's one dish that we all like. I would say overall the taste is ok, but little on the salty side, and there's lots of MSG on all the dishes. Cuz when we got home we all very thirsty. Since it was a birthday dinner, they did provide us the 'Birthday bao', as the standard dessert & fruits. Service wise is ok, could be more attentive. Overall, I would recommend this place. Overall a decent spot for a large group dinner with a lot of different options on the menu. You can reserve a private room upstairs with a $480 minimum spend which is easy to hit if you have 10+ people and order seafood. It's also BYOB and you can livestream different shows on the TV that is in the room. The food was not bad but not great. We pre-ordered a soup a week in advance but on the day of the dinner they called and tried to sell us a different soup. I would avoid the fish maw soup (the fish maw had a weird texture) and it was more fishy tasting than I've had in other restaurants. The lobster sticky rice and fried squab was not bad. I would also avoid the egg yolk coated fried crab - for some reason they added some soggy french fries to this dish. Service is good, they are accommodating and quick with preparing the food. This is a Chinese seafood restaurant in Dyker Heights, catering mainly to local customers from the area. Private rooms have better, brighter lighting than the lower level. Food wise- The standout dish was the satay black pepper lamb-chops: which was perfectly seasoned and tendered. Oddly enough, the night of the visit; restaurant ran out of Chicken-Hmm. Came here twice, one for family dinner and a special family banquet meal (private party) within 2 weeks. Halloween evening we wanted dinner. We were dressed up for the kids (for trick or treat) and hungry. We ordered 7 dishes (family style) which really impressed us. Quality ingredients and delicious. We had the largest room booked on a Sunday night. Pigeon soup, Peking Pork chop, braised lamb with bean curd, mayo shrimp with candied walnuts & broccoli, steamed flat fish, Lobster with stuffed sticky rice (fried rice style), mushroom mixed vegetables, steak with sautéed asparagus, chicken and vegetable chow mein. We also order a side of white rice and bok choy. Overall, love the food. Will definitely come back. Only qualm was that their restrooms needs more attention. Seems like their wait staff is too busy to check on that and too busy to refill water glasses. Most dishes were really good, the crab was cooked perfectly, most places overcook and the delicate meat can dry out. The sweet and sour pork missed the mark. This restaurant has gone through different owners several times, and the menu has stayed largely the same, while the decor and the staff have been changed. I like the new lighting, it makes the restaurant much brighter and inviting, an improvement from old, dark, gloomy atmosphere the old restaurant had. This restaurant, regardless of who the owner is, is most famous for their Yellow Eel Rice. I used to eat this for dinner every week, and while I'm no longer a fan due to an increasing dislike of the eel taste, it's pretty obvious why this is their signature dish. If you don't order anything else, you should at least try this once to see why it's their claim to fame. Even under the new owner, it is still delicious, with the perfect balance of moisture, eel to rice, and the crispy rice at the bottom is the best part. You can also get a soup with eel that comes with the dish. I also enjoy their Tofu & Eggplant Casserole Clay Pot with Fish Fillet. This is the best dish for me, personally. I'd rather eat this that the Yellow Eel Rice. The fish fillet is seasoned perfectly, and the eggplants and tofu are so soft and sumptuous. Hands down, a go-to favorite. The General Tso's chicken is awful and tastes almost like Sweet & Sour Pork. It shouldn't even be called General Tso's chicken because it doesn't even taste like chicken. Their lamb chops are seasoned well and not too gamey, but the portion is rather small. It's worth getting in a dinner with family, it doesn't disappoint. The standard vegetables, fish, seafood dishes are all rather average, like you'd get at standard Chinese restaurants. They're not top-tier, but not so awful that you couldn't finish them. However, there are definitely restaurants out there in 8th Avenue or 18th Avenue which are far superior to this one. The pricing is expensive for what you get, because 13th Avenue has high rent prices and poor business/inflow of customers. There are more stores closed than open along the street, so the fact that this restaurant has remained open despite the challenges is something to applaud, even if it's no longer under the hands of the original owners. I would suggest that this place is better for takeout than for dining in, because if your party is large, you'd best better go to the popular Chinese restaurants that are "name brand" to get better bang for your buck. There is a VIP area that has a karaoke station on the second floor, but I'm sure that's going to be a pricey option. read more
