Came here for lunch with a large group and they were able to accommodate us. The restaurant has decent amount of seating. Staff was friendly. Love the variety on the menu. Everything was reasonably priced. The fish was fresh and decent sizes. The platters were good. I love the spicy scallop tartare and the seared salmon. The only thing is the rice fell apart when you try to pick it up with the chopsticks. We also love the sweet potato fries. There is definitely something for everyone on the menu. Second time coming here. Plenty of seating and usually no wait, I get seated right away or pretty quickly. Their sushi is decent and some of the entrees are good like their egg drop beef chow fun. This spot is a great addition to the neighborhood sushi scene, more variety than your typical classic roll spot but less formal than a full on omakase. From the start, the menu felt a little overwhelming, but I actually liked how much variety there was. They've got your everyday sashimi, sushi, rolls, and some specials, plus plenty of hot food like bento boxes, noodles and rice dishes. There are even party trays if you're grabbing food for an event. With so many options, there's something for everyone in your group. The fish was fresh overall, though it leaned more mild than that buttery, sweet richness you get from higher grade cuts. The salmon belly was good but not as rich or melty as I hoped. The toro was nicely torched with that perfect buttery flavor. They also had Santa Barbara uni that night, which was solid, just not the most sweet batch I've had. They were already sold out of their Hokkaido uni that evening. We also tried the monkfish liver appetizer, it was mild and clean tasting, though I wished it had more of that rich, creamy depth you sometimes get from good quality ankimo. It came plain, but once I asked for a little ponzu, it helped balance the flavor. The space itself is clean and very bright, with an open layout where you can easily hear other tables, lively but not too loud. Service was friendly and polite, though a bit on the inexperienced side. Everyone was kind and tried their best, just small moments where communication or timing could be smoother. Been here few times and they have always had an issue with service. During their grand opening week, it was so busy. Service was slow but I thought it was because everyone was new and not used to the rush. I went again recently and encountered the same issue. It was a weird dinner experience. The order of food from kitchen to table were unorganized. We ordered a mixture of appetizers, sashimi, and entrees. 2 out of 4 apps came out first, Sashimi came out second, Then 1 out of 8 entrees... 3rd app... There was a long wait with the remainder of the meals and finally the last app was served while the most of us already ate. Though we ate at different waves, we all agree that we may come back for their fresh sushi/sashimi. Ramen and udon flavors were mediocre, and apps would've been great if they came on time. Washoku Kyo is a local gem! My friend & I came for dinner around 6pm and the restaurant was empty, but filled up quickly within 15 mins of us being there. They're also whipping up takeout orders in between so they are BUSY! The restaurant itself is spacious, well lit, and cute. For the price point, the portions & quality are unmatched for the area. I was a bit surprised to see that most of their rice bowls were only about $20-$30 considering how much fish & rice they include. There's an uni bowl for only about $26!! Heaven! I ordered the kyo don for my first time here, since it had a good enough variety of all (salmon, tuna, scallops, shrimp, uni, ikura, torched tuna). They don't skimp on the portions at all. I was extremely full and maybe only 1/4 of the way through my rice. The chicken wings were massive & also really tasty. Also - bevvies are only $2!!! A steal! Parking around here varies. This place is great for groups! I typically go with my family + extended family where it's nearing 10 people. The staff is very patient in taking our orders. However, what I tend to do is take everyone's order on my phone's notes app and then just let one of the staff members take a picture of the order. It saves a lot of headache for everyone. Onto the atmosphere, an inspiration of 90s video games, past and current anime culture, and an amalgamation of Hong Kong culture. It's well lit and very welcoming. There are semi-private dining areas (cordoned off with curtains) that are available for larger 8+ groups. Onto the food, there's a great mix of familiarized and hybridized Cantonese, South-east Asian, and Japanese foods. This is especially helpful when I come here with picky eaters who don't like raw fish. There's a health variety of raw foods, cooked foods, soups, etc. I haven't gone wrong with any of the foods I overed, but I will say there are a few special rolls that stand out (which unfortunately escape my mind at the moment). The price is very reasonable and the quality of their food is extremely fresh and delicious! Service was quick both times that I went, once when it was quiet and empty, and the second time when it was jammed pack, which surprised us since we were expecting to wait quite a bit due to how busy they were; this suggests that they have a good system going and it only took 5-10 minutes for us to get all our food despite it being a full house. The shrimp tempura box was such a steal with perfectly cooked and juicy shrimp, and even the popcorn chicken that accompanied the bento was perfectly crisped and seasoned. Their raw selections were delicious and extremely fresh, so I don't think you can go wrong with either cooked or raw selections. Extremely disappointed in the quality of this place. The price is fair for the neighborhood and the service was good. The waitress and waiter kept refilling our tea and checked in on us once. The sushi quality is lacking as one of the rolls - spicy scallop had a very fishy unfresh smell as we eat it. The eel had two bones in there and the rice was a bit too hard. The service was okay; the server did give us a heads up that food might be slow to come out as they were busy and also had quite a bit of takeout orders as well. The don was delicious -- I devoured every last bite. We also had the toro sashimi, which was only okay. It wasn't the best cut/quality since it wasn't melt in your mouth buttery. The mackerel bento box and fried shishamo were good. Also had the eel beef don and the katsu oyako don. The katsu oyako don was okay only but the eel beef don was really good. Their portions size are pretty generous. We all ordered drinks -- most drinks were $2. The Thai iced tea for $2 is a steal -- this usually costs $4-6 at most Thai restaurants... although I would say it's not the most authentic so probably why the lower price. Everything we ordered was pretty delicious. The menu had many items I would like to try. Would come back for more sushi and their dons. This place has a lot of potential to be really good, I came on a Thursday night and it was a full house. We managed to get seated within 15 minutes. This place reminds me of longevous joy, a restaurant that has since closed. The menu is very similar. I ordered a sashimi bowl with ikura, uni and toro, The uni and the ikura were delicious and sweet.. the toro was mediocre. Their Thai ice tea is $2 and they have several options that are $2.. and I hope that doesn't change because that alone might be enough to convince me to come here more often, since the rest of their menu can add up. The fried squid was really good too which they serve with Siracha mayo. Food was good and they have a good amount of seating however the service is SLOWWW I think it took 40 minutes for food and over 20 mins for drinks to come out. We had to request for hot tea twice and I think the hot tea didn't get refilled till we called for the bill. They are definitely short staffed but props to them for not messing up any order while being short staffed and having a full house! read more
