I went to UCSD in the 90's...I spent many days/hours at Porters Pub...so in my opinion nothing will ever come close. As an adult...we come to Mandeville Auditorium (adjacent to Porters Pub) for Dance competitions. ...so a place to quickly grab a bite is essential. I have not been a fan of anything that has rotated through this space. I spent this past weekend at Mandeville and Shores is the best since Porters Pub. we were able to come during a 40 min break ...got the reuben sandwich and the patty melt and shared. the reuben was the clear winner. Patty melt underwhelming. the fries (additonal $3 charge to entree) were tasty. i ordered a "cocktail" ...it was OK...I probably wouldn't again. This weekend was our last ever dance comp. so not likely i'll be back on UCSD campus anytime in the near future but who knows. Welcome to Campus

    Chicken Club with Onion Rings

Very cute and unexpected spot in the middle of UCSD campus. Old diner aesthetic with lots of tvs for watching sports and other entertainment. There's also music playing on a jukebox and a nice outdoor patio with lots of seating for a group event. I ordered the chicken club with onion rings and found it standard and well-made. I liked that it was cut into four parts, making it easier to bite into. The onion rings were good size and crispy. Service was quick and friendly. They explained the menu well and got us water and food in timely manner.

Went in for dinner on a Tuesday night and ordered the patty melt with curly fries didn't even take a pic because it was soo delicious patty melt was juicy and the sauce was great! Curly fries were super crispy my favorite. Finished it all off with a reeses chocolate milk shake. The diner decor is so cute, service was fast and super friendly and food was great!

    Burger & Grilled Cheese

I took my son for lunch at the newly opened Shores Diner and we had an amazing time. The restaurant was buzzing, staff was attentive and pleasant. We ordered burger, grilled cheese and a milk shake (don't mind the pic, I enthusiastically taste tested before I snapped it), all 5*! The place is super cute with decor from the 50s and really great ambiance. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back again.

The dance breaks on the hour were silly and fun, and the hats for the table were a cute touch. The kids loved the arcade too, and it's a perfect place to wait while getting a table. The music was a little loud and the space can be a lot of stimulation, but it never detracted from the food or flow of the evening. You kind of know what you're getting in to when you go there, and the lively environment fits with the "50's sock hop" theme. Biff, the manager, really made sure we were taken care of and any concerns were listened to. And Buddy, our waiter, kept his enthusiasm throughout the night and effortlessly handled a table with multiple kids and a baby. So happy we came and definitely left a goofy smile on my face. Will be back!

[insert 3 silhouette yelling emojis, a 100, and fire and…read moreexclamation marks emojis] After being THOROUGHLY disappointed by the other diner we went to (*cough*Beginner'sDiner*cough*), we had to cleanse ourselves with a TRUE diner and the Corvette Diner didn't disappoint! It's located at Liberty Station, which is, what seems to be a historical park. So there's a giant shopping area, several restaurants, people playing croquet, and much more. We were able to find parking and it's free. Even during the holiday season and it being a tad crowded, we had no issue. The cafe is extremely well themed and there is so much to look at in here! Service was super welcoming and our waitress had a such a great extroverted, entertaining personality. I didn't get her name but if she ever wanted to be a maid at a maid cafe, she'd be one of the top favorites for sure, she was so fun and personable! We had straws tossed at us, silly jokes, there were cards in the ceiling, there was a live radio station DJ right next to our booth. It was awesome! This place is so FUN! It's very retro 50's-60's themed with each section and room having completely different themes as well? Super cool. There was one that looked like you were in a moving train car, one where it was neon and hippy themed, etc. Lots of photo opportunities and I recommend, maybe when waiting for your food just walk around and take a gander. Portions were MASSIVE. I thought I was going to be able to share an appetizer sampler (Garbage Plate) with everyone but everyone ended up ordering their own entrees making a huge massive amount of food that had to be taken home in like 4-5 to go boxes. So keep in mind your portions are gonna be larger than life. All of the food is very classic American fast food diner fare. You got your burgers, fries, sandwiches, and of course milkshakes. I also had to get an outrageous milk shake here and it was the chocolate chip brownie decadence which wasn't horribly sweet as I'd imagine and it's not as daunting as something you'd get from Black Tap. Easy to take to go too and not too thick and coagulated. For my regular drink, I got the Green River which is a nice green soda with lots of cherries on top. They also had seasonal cocktail drinks too, which is always fun. There's an arcade off to the side, you get complimentary food server hats, and even though the penny press machine gave me something off center and silly they let me have another one for free with their own coinage. Definitely worth the visit since these type of places don't really exist in SoCal anymore and I definitely will come back with friends!

We ordered, but a few minutes later, our waiter came out looking like he had to deliver bad news. He apologized and said the chef refused to serve the current batch because it "wasn't up to his standards." Before we could even process being denied our soup, the chef himself walked out to our table. First of all? The man is dangerously handsome. Second of all? He was incredibly sweet. He politely offered us tomato soup instead, but then saw the heartbreak in my grandma's eyes. He told us, "Look, if you really want the matzo ball soup and can give me 15 minutes, I will go to the back and whip up a brand new, fresh batch just for your grandma." Naturally, we waited. Since he knew we were sharing, this absolute legend threw an extra matzo ball into the bowl so we could each have two. Talk about elite customer service! It really made us realize how much the people here care about the quality of their food. They won't serve you subpar dishes just to flip a table. My grandma was on cloud nine. She officially declared it the absolute best matzo ball soup she has ever had in her life (sorry, family recipe, you've been replaced by a handsome chef).

We ordered the deviled eggs for the table to share. We also ordered Patty Melts and shakes. I ordered onion rings for my side to my Patty Melt and everyone else got the side of fries. The deviled eggs is a super Duper tiny appetizer. The highlight is that it comes with salmon roll on top which are delicious. Our food came out and I will say that it just tasted OK this time. The patties in the patty melt were undercooked (they looked gray colored not brown) and didn't have as much flavor as they normally do. My onion rings were decent, but they just weren't fried correctly because a lot of them were stuck together. The shakes were the highlight of the meal as they tasted delicious and we enjoyed them. Customer service is always great. It's just that, on this night, the food wasn't as tasty as it was the first time. We hope that the food gets back to the great taste that it used to have soon.
