I ordered a carrot cake for my family. This was one of their specials for the month. It had salted caramel which beautifully balanced the cream cheese icing. This cake was 10/10. The only thing I'd note is that it's very rich! You will feel sick if you eat too much of it. I shared a slice with my wife and it was just perfect. The cake is moist and flavorful. I also have used them to order custom bday cakes, which were delivered and DELICIOUS. Recently made an order to bring dessert to Easter. The STUNNING spring flower cake and sammies were SUCH a hit, I was the hero of the affair, and everyone keeps asking me to pick it up again. That they do delivery with an easy to decipher online platform is such a relief for event prepping. Not for the faint of heart! This is something I thought I'd try as I always walk by it and all I can say is damn, it's really REALLY sweet. I got the S'mores Sammie and as delicious as it sounds, it was amazingly sweet; you'll either need a large glass of milk to wash this down, or someone to share it with. For the price it is worth it, but be warned, you'll be expecting a sugar high/coma from these sweet treats. Dropped in to pick up some Christmas goodies. I'd seen this place on a ton of 'top 10' lists but never had the chance to experience it first hand. Along the busier area of Avenue Rd. This place stands out! The 'pink place' is how I refer to it now. They have a fair selection of cookies, cupcakes and squares for sale, as well as a catalogue of items that you can order in advance. I bought 6 cupcakes (3-4 different varieties) and they looked so appealing! The vanilla ones were covered with sprinkles. The white chocolate ones had a ton of white chocolate pieces covering the frosting on top. The other 2, I don't remember very well. The cupcakes were moist and not overly sweet. It was not hard to finish them in one sitting. The variety of shortbreads were soft and buttery. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to shortbreads; however, these were pretty awesome! Prior to the Christmas goodies though I bought a birthday cake cheesecake square. It was AMAZING! Semi-sweet, moist, graham crackery goodness! The cheesecake was soft and I was in heaven! Staff are passionate about the product and the exceptional quality almost justifies the price point (which is higher than I would have anticipated). It took a good 15 minutes just to get to order because the sole worker decided it was more important to unload boxes of cupcakes into the display case (it was already half full; flavours weren't missing which would have been more understandable) rather than take orders. She was moving incredibly slow, occasionally stopping to reposition cupcakes in the display case by a few centimeters while a long line of about 10-15 people continued to pile up. Maybe I was just imagining it, but it felt like she was smirking as people behind me questioned whether she was even open. If she had just been opening up for the morning, I could forgive it, but this was right in the middle of the 12pm lunch rush and I didn't have all the time in the world to wait. I love how all the cupcakes were displayed on the shelf... with all the descriptions... no guessing, no need to ask them to describe every single one! Free mini cupcake samples was also offered!! I tried out the red velvet and vanilla cream, both deliciously good... in fact better than the one I got!! Carrot Cakecup ($2.95) was cute. The little carrot decoration on top is just adorable. I've frankly seen and tasted similar from the big grocery stores. Beware of their delivery service: an 8.5 hour window to stay at home and wait. I was having a mid-pregnancy craving for white cake and decided to stop and pick up some cupcakes and a cheesecake bar. After tasting the Vanilla cupcake it was exactly what I was looking for! So pretty and the cake was perfectly baked. I know I'm in for too much icing with cupcakes and I didn't eat it all but I still throughly enjoyed it! A sweet little shop on Avenue Road. It's a little bare but the sweet treats are on display for your selection. I chose six cupcakes and a "sammie". The first cupcake I tested was lemon. It has a sour gummy lemon treat for decoration and a raspberry butter cream frosting. What I didn't know: it included a lemon curd in the middle. I'm not a huge fan of curd but it was perfectly tart. All good. I had to get the cookie sandwich. I chose "Mars Bar". It is a caramel chocolate cookie with a vanilla buttercream filling and gooey caramel. It is decadent and very, very sweet. I should have gone with a more mild flavour. All in all, not bad. I found staff to be a little cold. No smiles, nothing. Just staring at me until I asked to place my order. I know my (permanent) tan is so fabulous you can't stop looking at me but customer service, people. It's important. read more

Oreo cupcake ($3.16 tax included) Atmosphere: This place is easily missed since it's beat off on the side of Avenue Rd, but I had read about this place and since it's fairly close to my area, I thought I'd give it a try. The sign is bright pink so I guess if you're walking, towards it, it'd strike out. But inside, it is very VERY small. There is no seating and can only fit around 3-4 people. 5 would be a crowd. But, I was my own crowd today. The Pumpkin cupcake was actually just a sample, and I found it to be delicious! All the flavours came out perfectly and the icing complimented it well, you could taste the cream cheesiness in the icing. On the other hand..... the oreo cupcake was a big dissapointment. First of all, it didn't even taste like oreo. Second, the icing was just plain and really oily. And as for the actual cupcake itself... someone give me some water, this cupcake is dehydrating! Yah. It was dry. NOT cool. I should of ordered another Pumpkin Spice! akjdflajldfjalkdfj waste of my $3.16 considering Pusateri's is just down the road. Grrrr.... I ordered a half dozen sammies by phone for pick-up later the same week. I asked for assorted flavours. I came and picked them up on Friday and they had them ready at the counter for the time I said I would be there to pick them up. I brought them home and had one that evening with my boyfriend for his birthday. We both were floored...they were incredible! If you have not tried them yet, ORDER THEM NOW! They were fresh and delicious. My boyfriend's favourite flavour was the red velvet, and mine was the white chocolate chip. They were quite large! We will be ordering them again in the future! Ordering was easy and the staff were helpful. The only issue was parking to come pick them up. I called 2 days in advance to make a cake order. I ordered The Sprinkler in 6". I was told it would be ready for pick up on Friday at the suggested time I gave and had decided to pick up at the Assembly Chef Hall location. I got there on Friday and the cake was ready in the fridge. It was massive! 6" in diameter, but pretty tall. I had to turn my air conditioner on full while transferring the cake to the final destination. Once the cake was sliced and I dove in for the first bite, the cake itself was light and fluffy. The vanilla buttercream was the last touch of sweetness this cake needed. The only comment I had was the thick outer layer of buttercream. Majority of the guests chose to mostly eat around the outer layer due to the dense sweetness of it. Overall, extemely tasty and would recommend. read more

Odd review I'm going to write here but bear with me. I didnt try anything here BUT I have to show a bit of love for an owner who clearly love their work and also is savvy to know how to generate interest, fun, and a good picture shot. He was great. I came to Assembly to see how this food hall compares to some of my adventures around the world and I have to say, this far exceeded my hopes for Toronto. The vibe, the space, and the type of food is great. The owner there apologized upfront that they've been selling out and not much left but I did see a lot of cute frosted cupcakes in some interesting flavours and a chocolate dripped cake over pale kermit green frosting. Also, an awesome unicorn cake... if that doesnt catch your eye, I dont know what will. The other great thing he did was that he was all open about taking pictures ... he got it that some people enjoys finding a great shot to showcase or 'gram. Im just a yelper but I do go chasing those unicorn pictures that make people go 'oh I need that in my life'. Totally great and warm welcoming owner... we need more restaurateurs and bakers like that. So next time I'm not planning to eat a full chef menu (thats why I didnt buy anything). I'm going to find Short & Sweet Bakeshop and it's ridiculously sugary cute space. Decided to get a chocolate cookie milkshake and I couldn't finish it - but it satisfied my dessert cravings. Not a bad little place, but this B.S. with the WagJag coupons has GOT to stop. Four times -- FOUR TIMES -- I've gone into Short & Sweet, all in January 2012, to try and use a WagJag voucher they offered late last year. And four times I've been met by a sign by the registers telling me I was out of luck, even as I looked at cake trays LOADED with cupcakes of all flavours. NOT cool, guys. I first discovered Short & Sweet using a couple of group-buy coupons I purchased last year (can't remember which company they partnered with) and had no trouble using either voucher. And this was when they were at their tiny previous location down on Old Orchard, just off Avenue, a little south of where they are now. I was impressed ENOUGH to go back and order cupcakes at full price on three more occasions, usually birthdays, etc. So along comes another voucher deal, via WagJag (whose parent company I work for no less!). I bought one, but after driving to the store to redeem it, I discover they've revised rules applicable to it, AFTER THE FACT. This is something retailers are discouraged from doing by companies like WagJag (remember the issues with that butcher joint in downtown T.O. that got in over their heads?). Anyways, the first time I tried to use the voucher on a Saturday early in January, I didn't notice the sign on the wall by the register stating they were no longer accepting WagJags for the remainder of the day (perhaps the FRONT DOOR would be a better location, folks?), so like a fool I had the guy load up a 12-pack of cupcakes destined for an event (though probably not as special as the ones held by the toffee-noses who live in the area surrounding Short & Sweet). Arriving back at the register, I suddenly spot the sign, nodded toward it in disappointment, and said that it looked like I wasn't going to be able to get them after all. The guy apparently agreed and started PUTTING THEM BACK!!! No conciliatory offer. No "oh, don't worry about it, I've already boxed them up". Nothing. They had PLENTY to go around that day. Yet he still preferred to let an order -- even a discounted one -- walk out the door unfulfilled. So, instead of cupcakes, as planned, we picked up a cake at another bakery along the strip, since we were in the vicinity. Good enough, I suppose. I tried Short & Sweet a week later, also on a Saturday, this time just figuring on getting the cupcakes for me and my girlfriend to split, but once again, the sign was still up. I didn't ask. I shouldn't have had to. I left. Tried again mid-week the following week. The sign was still up. I tipped back out the door. Tried again yesterday (another Saturday), and once again spotted the sign as I opened the door. Only this time, the sign was different. It now stated that WagJag customers HAD to place their orders 48 hours before pickup to avoid disappointment. Disappointment?!? The cake trays behind the counter were nearly FULL of fresh new cupcakes, but apparently I wasn't allowed to have any of those. W. T. F? So now, in what I think is a clear violation of the WagJag rules -- and if not, then a clear violation of good customer relations -- Short and Sweet expects me to place an order TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE for pretty much the same selection of cupcakes I'll see on display in the store when I go to pick it up? Seriously? Short and Sweet is a decent little cupcake shop in a city increasingly full of them. Were it not for this ridiculous "sign" business, I'd rate them a solid 4-stars (they'd only lose one because their cupcakes are a bit too firm). I'm going to try to use my WagJag one more time. Perhaps a second time if I'm feeling particularly masochistic. If all goes smoothly, I'll post a followup review here that gives them the 4-stars they would otherwise deserve. Failing that, however, I'll probably just ask WagJag for a refund on the voucher and make the trek to For The Love Of Cake downtown in Liberty Village, which is about four times the distance from my home, but they don't greet you with signs at the cash register when you show up to redeem them. You get your pick of whatever happens to be on display that day. If there's nothing you like that particular day, THEN you can decide to go back later. Or perhaps I'll return to Crumbs & Co. up in Richmond Hill. Don't remember any signs there, either. Look, here's some advice for businesses that sign up for WagJags, Groupons, TeamBuys, etc.: if you suspect there's even the SLIGHTEST chance that you'll sell several hundred vouchers requiring you to alter the rules after the fact, put those rules on the voucher website AND the voucher itself before anyone even hits the "buy" button. Far better to relax voucher rules later on (happy customers) then to restrict their usage at the point of transaction (unhappy customers), especially when many potential repeat customers aren't within walking distance of your store and have to factor in transportation costs, time, etc. You can fix this. read more

This was my first time ordering and experiencing these delectable delights. I love all things 'cake' (thus the reason I go to boot camp 6 days a week. While the cupcakes were indeed amazing and probably the best I've ever had, it is my experience with this shop and it's people that I found yelp-worthy. To say the service is exemplary would be an understatement. While such care and respect used to be the norm many moons ago, this priceless commodity in today's society has become an endangered species. The owner, Yoni, went out of his way to acknowledge the purpose of my order and this random act of kindness to me--an absolute stranger--brought tears to my eyes. A couple of years ago, I had a wagjag for this place and went with just under week before it expired. They printed a sign that said they would not be honouring the coupons. We said that we would not be able to come during the week and the man behind the counter said that he would accept the coupon up to a week after expiry. Trusting the man, we left without getting anything in writing. We came back a week later for our cupcakes and the same man said that the coupon expired. We explained that just a week ago, he said that he would honour the coupon because he was not accepting them the week prior. His excuse was that it must have been his son that told us this! This was unbelievable. Following this, I called Wagjag and they refunded me my money. They also acknowledged that I was not their first return and that they had previously heard the same thing from other disappointed customers. Went to a ticketed event for cinqo de mayo at Assembly Hall. Most places really shit the bed and didn't give very good food, but we ended up using almost all our tickets at Short & Sweet. Frosting is a solid 4/5 stars. Just a tad too sweet. The cake was flavourful, but way too dense. I'd give it a 2.5/5. A single slice of cake felt like it weighed half a pound! What are they putting in the cake batter?!? I only tried one cookie, and it was decent. Nothing spectacular. The main issue that I have with this place is the service. I went to order a custom cake one day on a break from work. It was around 2 pm. When I arrived, no one was there to take my order. There was a sign up saying they'd be back in 15. After 22 minutes of waiting, I nearly gave up and left. Fortunately, someone finally came. He wasn't apologetic in the least. Anyhow, the cake looked great. I preordered 36 cupcakes for a baby shower and chose from the daily menu; placing the order by phone with the store manager 2 days before the event. My order was chocolate with mint icing, lemon cupcake with raspberry icing, vanilla with pink icing and red velvet. The cupcakes were ready when I arrived (I was late for pick up). We checked the order to ensure it was all okay and they looked delicious!! So delicious, I asked for an extra one, their white chocolate berry flavour for the road! Unfortunately I only got to try the lemon cupcake at the shower The icing was too sweet for me to be able to finish it but the filling was a little tart so there was a good balance. I very much enjoyed the cake part of it. It seems like the guests enjoyed it as they were finished pretty quickly. The berry flavour we tried later was also very good. Dave really liked it! I love the way the shop looks and how pretty the cupcakes are decorated. My favourite flavours are: Short & Sweet, Ice Ice baby, and their Oreo cupcake. Their red velvet is good, however, I'm not a fan of the raspberry filling (or any filling in that case). I wish they would make a normal red velvet with no filling. They have certain flavours for each day of the week. The icing can be a bit too much since it is on the sweeter side, so I sometimes end up scraping off some. I've gotten their giant custom cupcake before for my birthday and it was absolutely beautiful and just as good as the regular sized one. Awful customer service. My boyfriend in the US bought me an $80 cake from here. I picked it up but later found out, they didn't give me the accessory for it so we called them to let them know I'd return for it. When I returned an hour later in the cold, there was a sign that they were ok a break for 15 minutes. When the lady finally appeared, she didn't even wrap up the accessory even though I had informed her earlier the cake was my surprise birthday gift to be opened tomorrow.
