I tried placing an order for a small wedding cake. The 'email us' button does not work, even though it is listed for you to contact them that way; I called the store, and the lady who answered was rude right off the bat - almost like she was annoyed to speak to a customer. I was trying to explain to her what I wanted and was met with irritated responses and questions. I thought she was having a bad day, so I continued to be friendly and stated that I just wanted a Vegan Chocolate Cake, but the conversation got worse. I told the lady that I was going to go elsewhere because I felt like we were not on the same page and that I didn't feel like there was a good vibe between us. She hung up on me. Very disappointed in this cake. I sent over quite a few examples with piping I wanted and they gave me a plain white cake with just the florals I requested. No piping. It looked like a wedding cake- not a birthday cake. I tried to move past it but then I tried the cake and it was VERY dense. The strawberry filling was good but the chocolate cake was honestly not good at all and too dense to enjoy. Ordered many cupcakes for an event in numerous flavors. They were ok tasting but were dry - maybe overbaked. Definitely not the quality I was expecting or hoping for. The flavors were boring. The blueberry lemon just tasted like a plain lemon with artifical flavoring and no blueberries. Same with the strawberry shortcake one. Sadly it was just a plain vanilla cupcake. The only decent one was the marble cake which I assume was due to the extra moisture from the chocolate portion. The frosting was a basic sugar frosting that was hardened on top. At what came out to $4 per cupcake, that was far too expensive for the quality and standard size we got. For the price I'd have much preferred Walmart or grocery store ones to these to be honest and fair about it. They get a 3 star because they did a great job with the color matching for us so they looked very pretty (but sadly tasted boring and dry), and they were also very friendly and helpful to work with. :) read more

Fantastic locally owned bakery with lots of wonderful flavors. I've purchased cupcakes & cakes - all have been delicious. They offer a gluten free variety as well as their regular cupcakes. (Triple chocolate, chocolate ganache, raspberry, blueberry lemon, among many more options) A little more expensive, but the quality is always great. Service was wonderful & quick! This is a great place to pick up a treat and go since they don't have much room for sitting. They do have a couple of tables to sit if you want to stay. read more

Sometimes when you're walking down a road, you fall down a rabbit hole. In my case, that rabbit hole was Short Street Cakes on Haywood Road. In between brewery stops, I was on my way to Urban Orchard Cider Company when my eye caught the cake shop's sign in front of me -- right across the street from the former. Curiosity killed the cat and I went inside. The baker behind the counter was super nice and friendly, helping me decide on a TCG cupcake that was all chocolate goodness. Had I been a glutton, I would have had more, but I savored every bite of that cupcake. Light, fluffy, tasty -- the cupcake hit the spot as I sat at one of the tables, while digging the cool 50s-vintage furniture. Short Street Cakes was a nice, little reprieve before I walked into my next brewery stop. Definitely recommend if you have a sweet tooth whose walking down Haywood Road enjoying the breweries along the way. read more

I called yesterday to inquire about the kind of sugar they use; they advertise some cakes being vegan, but some sugar still whitens with bone char. I left a message and didn't hear back. I called again today, and "the opposite of helpful" is how I can describe the lack of assistance received. The person who answered the phone did tell me the kind of sugar they use, but then said she doesn't know anything about if it's bone char or not. She didn't know what bone char is, and fair enough, many people don't. I asked her if she could find out. She said she was the only one in the shop at the time. I asked if she could get a message to someone else to find out. She told me it could be tomorrow. That's fine; I didn't say I needed to know immediately. She said okay, she'd leave a message and got ready to hang up without taking my contact information. I told her never mind. I had this same problem with this bakery five or ten years ago, I don't remember exactly. At that time, they told me to call their supplier themselves, and while that isn't my job I did call the supplier, who told me that they can't give out any information since I'm not a customer. I relayed that to the bakery and they ignored me. But sometimes things change and I thought I'd give them a second chance, because before I thought about the bone char issue, I had gotten cakes and cupcakes from this place and they had been very tasty and flavorful. But Domino sugar still uses some bone char while processing their sugar (and also coal!!!), so none of their "vegan" items are even actually vegan. Customer service? I called ahead this year and ask them to set aside some cupcakes for me when I arrived the next day to pick them up none of the cupcakes were the ones that they said they might have. I understand that, they have a two day ordering policy and that they cannot promise but when I came and picked up these cupcakes and none of them were the ones I wanted they made me buy all of them. We were coming in from out of town so ordered via phone and picked up in person. We used the website and yelp as our guide (beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes). Each request we made was met with a "no, we don't do that" (even though it is a selling point on the website). When we came to pick it up, she would not give it to my husband because any name he offered (mine, his, my daughters) was not the name on the order - which she wrote down wrong in the end - a close approximation to my name. I ordered the vegan Triple Chocolate Ganache cake. It's delicious and the best vegan cake I've had in ages! That said, I do have a few minor things to add: the internal layer of icing was uneven-lots on the side and very little as you get towards the center. Maybe it's because it might've melted at some point? The cake itself was not as moist as I would've liked, but it was still VERY good and by no means dry. I just like it super moist. The cake also fell apart and cracked in a few places despite it being kept in a refrigerator. That was disappointing because I wasn't able to get a pretty picture of it before it was sliced. Bought an almond cake with "bourbon" buttercream frosting and a cherry filling. Hardly any cherry filling and absolutely zero bourbon in the frosting. To top it off the frosting was so sickly sweet it was disgusting. You couldn't even taste the almond cake due to the sweetness of the frosting overpowering everything. It was no different then a grocery store bought cake. Extremely disappointing since previous experiences with them have been great. We were all disappointed except for my one friend that loves super sweet buttercream frosting. I do not . At all. Didn't even order buttercream!!! We asked for cream cheese!! That's a huge difference and I had to eat around the frosting because I couldn't stomach it. The cake was ok kinda dry for a pound cake. There were literally 2 thin slices of strawberry on an average slice of cake you could barely see them it was laughable. I wish I had bought some strawberries to just add myself!! I spent the weekend in Asheville with some friends to celebrate an engagement and ordered a cake from here after seeing they were made with all natural ingredients. After ordering a very specific cake due the preferences of my friend, I was told I could pick it up on Saturday. I had ordered a few days in advance. On Saturday, I happened to call in advance to make sure I could pick the cake up at a specific time that day. I was told that someone was supposed to call me (I never received any call) and that the cake I ordered was made in a different flavor. They explained this was due to the fact that credit card information was not on file for the cake but that is no explanation at all as to why they didn't make the cake I ordered. I don't visit Asheville often, so I likely would not have revisited this shop even if I had received a cake. But after working for years in customer service myself, I was very disappointed with this cake shop. I was never asked for a credit card to put on file upon ordering the cake (I assumed therefore I would pay upon pickup) which I gladly would have given if it meant I would have gotten the cake I ordered. Further, because no one called me to inform me, I was left without a cake the day of the celebration. If I had been called in advance, I likely could have arranged for another option. I'm highly disappointed mainly because I'm sure that the cakes this bakery offers are delicious but if the service doesn't match that, people end up frustrated or without a cake or in my case, both. read more

My family vacationed in Asheville this week, and I called Thursday morning to order a birthday cake for my husband's 50th birthday to celebrate with our extended family on the last night of our trip. We agreed to pick it up Friday afternoon (called in advance to confirm we were coming to get the cake), and when we got there, they had given the cake to someone else and let them sign for it using my credit card, which I had given them over the phone for payment when I ordered the cake. I was charged almost $70, including a generous tip for the cake, that a stranger paid for with my card. The employee assured us that we'd get a refund but he was unable to get the owner to complete it because they were "busy" (only the owner apparently could issue refunds) and said that we could go and they would refund us later. We didn't feel comfortable with this, so we waited for 30 minutes until the owner had time to do the transaction and we got a receipt for the refund. We left with no cake for the birthday celebration and no offer of compensation or even much an apology from the bakery. Thankfully Whole Foods has good premade cakes and had one left when we got there. Unfortunately, the time we'd hoped to spend in downtown Asheville that day was spent trying to find a replacement cake. The situation seemed shady -- I have an usual first name and last name, and the bakery didn't have any system in place to confirm the information with the person who took the cake and signed for my credit card. Maybe this bakery makes excellent cakes. I don't know. But their business practices are questionable, and Asheville seems to have many other good choices for baked goods. read more

This is a review mainly of Short Street Cakes' Mardi Gras King Cake, rather than of the entire bakery. Since we lived in New Orleans for about 10 years, we like to at least pay our respects to Carnival with a King Cake or two. We heard that Short Street Cakes had a good version, called and ordered one ($25 for a fairly large one, with cinnamon and sugar and a white cream cheese frosting.) It didn't have cream cheese filling, which New Orleans has moved toward lately, but that didn't bother me because I prefer the traditional style without the fillings. I have to admit it didn't quite live up to our expectations. For one thing, it wasn't "New Orleans" enough -- just a few tasteful little purple, green and gold sprinkle dots rather than the gaudy, glitzy bright blobs of the Mardi Gras colors that you normally see. The King Cake did come with three bead necklaces in the cake box -- throw me sumthin', Mister! It wasn't bad. It just wasn't quite New Orleans. Still, Short Street is in West Asheville, and I like to support West Asheville businesses, so I'lll give it four stars. read more

I just wanted to leave an update about how our wedding cake turned out. It was delicious! We ordered the Banana Fosters Cake with Spiced Cream Cheese icing and we were not disappointed. We received many compliments on the unique cake flavor. I actually had a few guests ask if my grandma made the cake, which is exactly what I was going for. If you are looking for a picture perfect, sky high, fondant covered, country club cake...then this is not the place for you. But If you want a simple, natural, delicious wedding cake then this is a great place. We had a laid back, bbq wedding and our cake fit the bill. I also enjoyed working with them. They didn't call me a thousand times like a lot of the other vendors we worked with. I had my tasting, she called to confirm a few weeks before the wedding, and they showed up with the cake.
