I decided to wade through the, what I know now to be BS one star reviews, and see for myself Shortcakes. What I found at 6:30 this morning was a smiling greeting to a wonderfully smelling classic worn tables diner. Food (chicken fried steak breakfast) was great. Service was great. Company was great (a couple of regulars included me in their conversation about beautiful sunrises). I'm not sure how it could have been better. 5 stars feels thin. read more

As I write this, I an sitting in the parking lot of Shortcakes Diner. Is it good? No idea. You see, I just walked in and sat at tbe counter. Before I could even take a look at the menu, this is what I saw... One of the ladies behind the counter was lifting a waffle off of the waffle iron. Apparently its far too much trouble to use a utensil, or even put a glove on her hand. She just lifted the waffle and put it on tbe plate, bare handed. If she does that in full view of the customers, can you imagine what happens in the kitchen? I'm not someone who is germaphobic, but come on! I just got up and walked out. The French toast at this hidden gem was simply amazing! The eggs were perfectly scrambled, fluffy and delicious. The bacon was cooked to a crisp, with just the right amount of crunch, avoiding the burnt taste. My wife's chicken fry was a generous portion, golden brown and cooked to perfection. read more

We came in one morning because we have never tried the food and it was a little disappointing. Everything was pretty much prepackaged food. And you can definitely taste it. The grits were still a little grainy like it wasn't cooked all the way. The biscuits and gravy was the most decent meal there. Their syrup was not sweet at all. We had to put sugar on our pancakes. I was really hoping to have found a hole in the wall for breakfast. The place is a small cute diner. The service was great! read more

Why on earth would Yelp indicate this place is closed. People are missing out of the local food. I cam to this place when I went to school here in the early 2000's. I knew the food was good then and it surprised me a bit now how actually good it truly is. I always get thr French toast, eggs and bacon so I can't say much about the other items. All i know is that people would always order the same stuff and that was mine. I am glad I had the chance to come back to this place and I would recommend it for anyone else in Orange Country. If you go in with relatively low expectations you won't be disappointed. This isn't anything fancy but the locals (and likely the OSU students) know it's a little slice of breakfast heaven wrapped in a brown paper bag. Visiting Dad (a local and "Shorty's" regular) who was beyond excited to take us.....twice. Didn't catch the server's name either time but she was sweet as could be and brought a smile to my face both days we visited. Food is nothing spectacular but it's down home yummy. Sister loved the French toast and my 2 egg brekkie was just right. If you like eating local when traveling, don't miss this stop. Again, no frills here and expect to smell like breakfast all day long after you leave but we'll worth it! read more

Came to Stillwater for game day. On the way home, was on the look-out for a local breakfast place. Saw this diner packed with cars around 10 am on a Saturday & had to stop. Fluffy scrambled eggs, hash browns cooked perfectly, homemade biscuits & bacon that I wish was more crispy. If you have a big group, you'll have to divide as the largest table is a 4 top booth. But you'll feel like you're sitting next to them -it's cramped inside and feels like you're in a train car. I did notice a malodorous smell as well as some degree of uncleanliness (water stains on the ceiling), hence the 3 stars. Open 24 hours. read more

When I am inside the area. I noticed there is problem with the cooker thar hasn't wash hand. That guy keep dirty on hand while he whip his mouth. The order I got is 2/10 rate taste okay. The problem that they didn't clean the under stove that has very dirty. The fan hasn't clean, the floor in kitchen is super dirty. Plus the employer(cooker) is play with kids in back room. They never wash hand before cooking or clean. read more

If you want comfort food, this is one of my favorites. Definitely not a place to go if you are wanting to eat healthy. I've never gotten anything but the chicken fried steak here which my friends and I nicked named "the frisbee" because of its size. I used to go there in college 30ish years ago and went again recently. Nothing has changed. I mean, literally nothing. Same booths, light fixtures, counter. Still good. read more

This reminds me of a little hole in the wall diner but I don't mean that in a bad way. Food was great and staff was very accommodating. They had a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner items. I do believe they are open 24/7....so great for those late night munchies too! We had the following and they were yummy. Biscuits and gravy - there wasn't any sausage in the gravy but my husband said the seasonings were fabulous and he's picky so that means a lot! I'm sure you could request sausage to be added or just order a side of sausage patties. We were here a few different times and ordered the make your own omelette using ingredients like jalapenos, sausage, bacon, ham, cheese, onions, peppers, etc. You definitely get your moneys worth on the volume. For toast options: You can choose from white, wheat or rye toast A few other menu items of mention are: chicken fried steak, burgers, breakfast including pancakes and French toast. During different trips we had both pancakes and french toast and they were both great. You can also choose from grits or hashbrowns. Both were great. This is a great little find for cheap and good breakfast. It was busy every day and I can see it is definitely a fan favorite for the local older group. read more

This place may have been good in the past, but it's not anymore. I just moved back to town after being gone for 12 years and was craving breakfast after all the other breakfast joints in town were closed for the day. (The only other option was IHOP, but don't get me started.) We remembered Shortcakes used to have good pancakes, so we decided to give it a try. The smell of cleaner hits you hard as soon as you walk in. Flies swarm around the graffiti laden tables. There is no music playing and although there were around 10 people inside (including employees) it was uncomfortably quiet. The waitress was prompt but not overly friendly or talkative. We ordered French toast - 4 wedges with a side of bacon, a short stack of pancakes with a side of bacon and 2 sodas. The French toast was awful - it tasted like a fried egg covered in syrup. No custard batter, just heavily dunked in egg and fried. I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The pancakes were rubbery and tasted like the grill. The bacon had a good flavor but it was chewy and I really hate chewy bacon. We were shocked when our ticket was over $17! Not worth it at all. Overpriced, gross, smelly and BAD food. We will not be back. RIP Shortcakes. read more

I cannot believe that I have not yet reviewed this iconic place! Shortcake is THE greasy spoon for Stillwater, the college town that houses Oklahoma State as well as an outpost of Northern Oklahoma College. A few tidbits about Shortcakes: 1. notice the gorgeous (and rare) Oklahoma State Tiffany lamps on the ceiling. 2. although this place is a dive, they pass all their health inspections. If you look closely, the kitchen area is very clean. 3. service is extremely friendly and the daytime crowd is pretty folksy-friendly 4. the food is extremely cheap and good!! 5. nighttime crowd can be a little sketchy, especially the later it is simply because there is where the drunks come to sop up alcohol with some greasy food...be aware! Overall, Shortcakes is a place that will always hold a special place in my heart as an OSU alum!! I always make my way here every time I visit Stillwater. read more

I remember being so excited when I was 18, a new freshman at OSU and my CM (RA, whatever you call it) took me and a few other people to go to "breakfast" at this place, at like 2 AM with a whole bunch of other people from our building. She kept going on about how it was basically an institution, as was the old guy that sits at the counter and is ALWAYS there at the early hours of the morning. It was tres exciting because, well, I lived a pretty sheltered life up until that point and it would be easier to obtain the Golden Fleece than go hang out in high school. The second the doors opened. Woosh! The noxious smell hits you in the face like a gale force wind. The place smells like stale pop when it is poured outside on the ground, in the heat and goes rancid. Mix that horrific smell with the scent of 80 lbs of rancid grease hanging off of the walls, ceiling and floor. Barf. If Lady Gaga could bottle that scent, it would be her new, eau de toilette. The tables are sticky, the menus are sticky, the floors are sticky. This restaurant is really in need of a power wash. I have no idea how or why the health department hasn't shut them down. The amount of grease here makes this place a ridiculous fire hazard. If this place were to burn down, the fire department would have a heck of a time putting out this grease fire with water - it would be like a fire bomb. I hope they keep a ton of salt around in case this extreme fire hazard ever goes up in smoke. The food was okay the handful of times I went, but you really have to wonder about the sanitation of it when it's been served in a den of filth. read more

Visited on: multiple dates from 2012 to 2013 Eww. I get grossed out just thinking about this place. It's disgusting inside. It's cramped, dirty-feeling, and constantly smells like bleach, or more likely, drunk people's vomit and piss washed over by bleach. I'm pretty tolerant of subpar cleanliness and environment if the food is worth it, but in this case, 1. it's not, and 2. the grossness of this place is so extreme that it suppresses my appetite, regardless of how good the food is. I've had the following: - Country Breakfast with 2 eggs over easy, hash browns, sausage, and French toast - this was okay - Cheese Fries with Chili (chili cheese fries) - this was okay - Hamburger Steak (small) with French fries - this was mediocre - Breakfast Sirloin with French fries and Texas toast - this was gross, it tasted like rubber The only reason this place is still alive is because it's open 24 hours a day. The only other 24-hour sit-down option in Stillwater that I'm aware of is IHOP, which I'd gladly pick over this. Quite frankly, I'm really surprised that this place still has a 3 star average rating, and has even managed to get 4- and 5-star (?!!) ratings from certain diners who must be lacking eyes, noses, and taste buds. read more

This is a college town classic divey, grungy place for no frills yet surprisingly good food. This is a waffle house type place but bleeds orange for the OSU Cowboys. I've been in and out of here for 15 years and it's still nearly exactly the same as the first time I saw it. The staff are usually a little less than professional but friendly and attentive. It's not the cleanest place I've ever been so be prepared of you're looking for spotless..... you won't find it here. Of you want down home and grungy this is your best option. read more

Oh Stillwater, OK I haven't been in your embrace in 11 years since I grad Dec 2006 but Shortcakes has a place in my heart. This place is nostalgia for me and checkmarks all the things on a list of a total "hole-in-the-wall" college diner. It is the epitome of hole-in-the-wall. Chicken fried steak, check. Pancakes, check, reeks of cigarette ash, dip, and that sweet musky scent of a dude who just did a keg stand on some 3.2% alcohol natty house party beer, check. The closest I would compare this to is a Wafflehouse. Open 24/7 when I was there from 2002-2006, the best part was you could sit at the diner, have unlimited coffee on the cheap and keep roasting the night away on a caffeine high while trying to get work done with people left and right of you. read more

I know it's not for everyone, but if you are looking for some great home cooked food with that down home feel...this is the place to go. I've had a variety of items. Well, this is my favorite greasy spoon. Chicken fried steak and eggs == excellent. Country breakfast == excellent. Strawberry pankakes == excellent. Chicken strips with fries gravy and ranch == heart clogging excellent others - but those were my main picks. Prices are great. I have had the pleasure of eating here a lot over the course of 13 years and not once have I ever asked myself "Why do I come here". Its consistently a no brain-er. I would dock it a .5 star for the smoking allowed interior but I heard that they are expanding and eliminating that. Don't expect to get right in at bar closing time (2-2:30am) as there will be a line out the door. They are open 24-7-365. read more
